Review from Daisy S.
I've recently fallen in love with their veggie sandwich. It is served on herbed bread (AH-MAY-ZINGGGGGGG!) and stacked super high with fresh veggies. They throw lettuce on top of lettuce, sprouts, tomatoes, avocado, onions, cheese (Swiss & provolone) and peppers up in there. You can customize it any way you want. They also use mustard and mayo so be sure to tell them if you don't want something in there.
I had this the other day (took out the mayo and Swiss to make it a tiny bit healthier) and also ordered the roasted red pepper soup. The soup is divine and the perfect complement to the fresh sandwich.
I placed my order online and I love that when you go pick it up they leave it for you in a cubbyhole type shelf with your name on it so you can just grab and go. -

Meh. I've never found a salad or sandwich at Specialty's that was very satisfying or memorable. But then I got into their Cobb sandwich... until I found out it had 1040 calories and 62 GRAMS OF FAT (compare to a Big Mac at 540 cal/29 grams fat). Terrifying!
Their cookies might be worth the calories though... especially when warm. Chock-full of butter, they'd certainly be Paula Dean approved! -

My fallback option for those days when I have forgotten or didn't have the time to pack a lunch, as this location is across the street from my office. Cobb sandwich and a cookie and I am a happy me. Love that I can order online and get a text when it is ready. The turkey apple brie is also good and the salads, particularly the one with berries and goat cheese look tempting (my officemates have ordered that one often).
Though at nearly 1000 calories, the sandwiches should come with a warning or something. Even the grilled cheese at the Melt have fewer calories!
And the cookies are good. Another fallback for those Monday meetings when I am feeling uncreative about where to get the office treats or short on time. A few muffins, pastries and cookies and the coworkers are happy, if not bowled over by the inventiveness of my choice. -

The food here is good, but best if you order in advance. I was walking on my way to work and decided to order a sandwich. Wow it took a while for them to make it. Good thing was was early going to work, or else I would have canceled my order.
The positives of this franchise is they make fresh bread and cookies. I guess I like some of their other locations a little bit more than this one. -
Review from Gev M.
Specialty's has become a "go-to" place in the Financial District, and with numerous locations, fast service, and good food at decent prices, it is obvious why...
OK - let's get the cookies out of the way. Yes, they are quite amazing, but at almost 500 calories a pop, I have to think twice before giving in to their soft doughy and chocolatey goodiness.
What I have been ordering a lot of lately are their salads, particularly the Spicy Thai and the Vegan salad, which are both under 200 calories each yet still filling (the small portion even). Also, if you want something out of the ordinary, try the PB&J - PB and cranberry sauce with bananas and granny smith apples on whole wheat. For smaller bites, I tend to go for the quiche (cheese and veggie varieties; I've yet to see the ham one at this location), which is a little heavy, but not too bad, aka no food coma. My one quip is that the quiche sells out at like 9 am, and they typically don't make any more throughout the day.
Service is fast, furious and friendly. There is a separate counter if you just want to order baked goods, which helps keep the line in check. Online ordering process and subsequent pick-up is also really easy. Note: be warned that there is no where to sit inside; pick-up and go!
Overall, a foolproof lunch option, open 6 am - 6pm M-F! -

I'm very impressed with their business model. They are so efficient and their online ordering system works so well!
Other than that, the food is also amazing! I had the Turkey & Cranberry sandwich on whole wheat. It's like having thanksgiving in a sandwich :) -
Review from Andrew M.
I am a huge fan of the cookies here. When they come out fresh from the oven it is hard to beat. I probably get a little to excited about their cookies.
The other food here though is average by my standards. The one nice perk of this place is that I can order online and pay from my office and then walk down there and pick up with no hassle. -

AMAZING cookies. Milk chocolate chip (or semi-sweet) you really cannot go wrong.
I love the turkey pesto sandwich, too. So delicious. Reasonably priced. Though a cookie is something like $3. So a sandwich and a cookie (no drink) is almost $10. Really wish they had a deal for a drink, sandwich and cookie for $8 or something? If so, I'd be there every day. -

Their cookies are to die for!! Especially when they are warm, right out of the oven! The semi-sweet choc chip is my favorite, but their Wheat Germ cookie is also somewhat heatlhy and super delish too! You gotta try them!
I also come here for their sandwiches too! They have a great menu and variety!! -

I should give this place negative 8 stars because whenever our office orders snacks and lunch from here I'm forced to spend an extra hour at the gym, torturing myself on the stairmaster.
You can literally taste the butter in these cookies. Not in a cheap, gross Toll House way. But in a light airy Butterflies and Puppies Made of Butter Way. Lots of people rave about the wheat germ which I love, but their sticky buns are incredible, as are the black and white cookie and lovers lane brownie.
Also: salads and sandwiches! I love their Southwestern Salad, and the Vegetarian sandwich.
Just do yourself a favor and don't look at the nutritional info. Ignorance is bliss in that regard. -

Best. Cookies. Ever!!
They're almost $2...but so worth it. They're huge and thick and oh so dee-lish. (Note: Better when warm)
Occasionally the workplace will pick up some packed cold lunches (sandwich, chips, fruit and cookie) from here for meetings and I have to say...they're not bad at all.
I tried one of their small salads.... Chinese Chicken and that was pretty good. I haven't tried their online ordering yet, but I hear it's really easy and convenient..... I gotta check that out. -

The cookies here are amazing!!! But I always feel so guilty after getting one. But I always get one anyway, if I'm feeling irritated or if I'm suddenly craving it. But then I get even more irritated after I eat it because I probably just consumed 1000 calories of fatty goodness. But I guess it's worth the 5 minutes of happiness while I'm eating my cookie.
And just in case you were wondering, here is my ranking of my favorite cookie flavors:
1) peanut butter chocolate chunk!!!
2) Semi-sweet
3) Milk chocolate
4) White chocolate macadamia
5) White and black
6) Snickerdoodle
7) Oatmeal. I mean, why would I get a "healthy" option of something when I'm trying to eat something unhealthy?Listed in: FiDi Lunch!

any business that does not allow customers to order from their website without registering first is ridiculous. i have never heard of a business that refuses to allow for a customer to place an order without registering, so rather than register, i attempted to call the store directly, and they refused to take my order. i think i'll go to foccacia market instead.

The chocolate chip cookies from Specialty's are a GIFT FROM GOD.

I went to get a cookie and only had $100 bill to my name. They did not take such a large bill. I don't mind that they refuse to take such a large bill but the women behind the counter gave me a dirty look. That is not nice. I hope that my money is good everywhere. But not to her!! Don't hate lady!!
I wish I could stop coming there due to the bad customer service but unfortunately there are not that many bakeries around this area. So, I guess I will have to return. I just hope I don't see the lady with the nasty look on her face. -

I have revised my latest experience with Specialty's. Today I customized a Caprese sandwich and it was made perfectly and available right on time. The amount of ingridients was generous for a $7 sandwich. Now that most of the FIDI has $7 and more sandwiches, this place is still way better than Foccacia. They have the best online ordering ever. You order, pick your time and then go to a priority pick up area to get it. No interaction or line messes at all.

I love the day-old. Especially the day-old price. The only problem is that with some things, it tastes day-old. For instance, the cheese danish that I ate this morning was a bit dry around the danish bits. How can a danish be made more moist?

5 stars for Semi-sweet Chocolate Chip! The best cookie I ever had. Yes, it's chain. But, it's a chain because it is soo good they have to share with more people. :P Seriously, I would dream about this cookie about once a day. It has a little bit of cake quality and yet it's not too sweet or too soft. It's not cheap. About $2.20 each, but this is a huge chunk of cookie and money better spend than on those silly cupcakes.
The milk chocolate chip is too sweet for me and I am not a big fan of oatmeal raisin either. The oatmeal raisin here is rather salty actually - which is weird. Their sticky buns are really good too. So are their almond scones if you like scones.
However, trust me and just get a dozen of those semi-sweet chocolate chip.
I have not had their sandwiches, but I had their salads. Not a fan. Would rather have the cookies. Did I tell you write about how good they are? Especially when you get them while they are warm? The little bit of chocolate chips melting on that scrumptious goodness. Well, I can go on about it, but you should get one yourself and prove me right. -

If you are able to spare a few (hundred) calories, you should definitely get a Chocolate Chip Cookie from here as a treat! They are chunky, buttery and so delicious. Not overly sweet... just right. The bakery window of this location is right in front and you can order as you walk by which makes it dangerous because as you are walking by and trying not to go in... you don't even have to go inside... it's RIGHT THERE.

"If you want a sandwich, you need to get your butt to Ike's"
Ike's? Really? Isn't that where all the ultra cool hipster with their all their tattoos go?
I've never even smoked a cigarette, I would be so out of place.
I may not be cool, nor have a single tattoo on my lanky body but check this out. If you want one of the best sandwiches anywhere, then YOU should get your butt to Todi, Italy. Two doors down from Pan y Vino there is a small deli where they take a freshly baked baguette, slice it, then they add prosciutto a few basil leaves and drizzle it with olive oil. It's the simplest of sandwiches but it is absolutely delicious.
Take that SF Hipsters!
I like Specialties, but don't love it. I know they bake their own bread products and have all sorts of creative sandwiches like the roast beef with blue cheese but never do they wow me. This time of year, I gravitate towards the turkey and cranberry but this grosses some of you out right? Anyway, the bread falls short with me. Is it me or does the wheat and the white taste exactly the same? And there is too much air in the bread. I mean no offense to you white bread lovers, and I think theirs is decent but I do love variety and my taste buds just isn't getting it.
Now the cookies I do love. And more than one of my friends/co workers are in this same boat with me. Do not dare make a Specialties run and comeback empty handed. -

Specialty's deserves at least 3 stars for reliably tasty sandwiches and salads. Vegan and spinach salads are great, and a good value.
Add one more star for the amazing online ordering system! Customizable down to the last detail, contains nutritional info, and lets you modify your order and even add a note (if you want dressing on the side, for example). You specify a time that you want your order to be picked up, closest time is 15 mins. My order is always correct and on time. In fact, sometimes I get lunch from here just so I can use the neat online system.
And oh yes, warm cookies...pretty delightful. -

What's with the attitude here? I came in a few weeks ago hoping for a soup and a sandwich. A gentleman ahead of me was asked what he wanted and he said he wanted a sandwich. I walked towards him thinking that was a sandwich line, only to watch the cashier say "You can't." That was it. I'm not sure what the explanation was because she turned away from me as she was saying it, but the gentleman ahead of me walked right out, as did I. Apparently there were others who did the same, because as I was trooping out a woman commented that cleared the line really quick.
Today I went to get a cookie from the side, and while the first cashier was nice, the one who did end up helping me looked like he had just gotten a parking ticket or something. Attitude pretty much radiated from him and I was in and out quick.
The cookie wasn't bad, but I was surprised the chocolate chips weren't too sweet and the cookie had the look of having been baked a little too long, as it was slightly crunchy.
The store itself is rather small, so hopefully they normally do a good job moving people in and out. It's a popular spot, although there's another Specialty's down in the BART station. I think that one will remain my go-to place for Specialty's, because the other locations tend to be disorganized or like here, have attitude. -

Wow...AMAZING Cookies!!!
So I followed the local lunch crowd into this small bakery that had a line of people waiting for their lunches and am I glad I did!!!
Though many people were waiting for food...they took my order very quickly and I only hung around for 5 minutes until i got my lunch.
I had a hot pastrami sandwich served on a Cibatta roll which was pretty thick and tasty....For the price I was VERY satisfied.
The icing on the cake was the chocolate chip cookie. It felt like it weighed a pound! When I took my first bite it just seemed like a mound of hot gooey milk chocolate surrounded by a cookie!
I will definitely swing by this great gem again....right outside the BART exit for Embarcadero -

So lately I've been trying to watch what I eat. Watch my calories, portion sizes, you know...I just dont call it a diet. :/ So on those days when we want to watch our calories and pocketbooks, Jenn O and I like to order a large salad and split it.
Those big boxes hold about two servings and it's perfect for a light lunch, split 2 ways - we never spent over $6.00 for lunch. I like the:
*Greek Goddess - add chicken FTW!
*Chinese Chicken Salad
*Southwestern Salad
Always accompanied by a warm Chocolate Chip Wheat Germ cookie, which we also split. Sharing is caring!!!!Listed in: Sammitches

I love coming here when I can't figure out what to eat for lunch and need something quick. Yes, there may be a long line, but here's 2 tips:
- order online and just pick up
- order from the window (yes, they can take your food order - it's not just for cookies!)
My go-to is Dawn's Vegan Salad (small is plenty!): yes, I usually hear the word "vegan" and I'm not so sure...but this salad is packed with a large variety of vegetables. Plus it comes with a piece of delicious bread (if only these could be bigger!)
The cookies are HUGE and the black and white ones are my favorite. They're rich and definitely not an everyday type of cookie, but perfect for as a pick-me-up.
Bonus: the customer service here is fantastic! -
Review from Veasna H.
So I know some people love Specialty's and swear by it. Really? I think specialty's is overated and overpriced.
Here's the thing, my company gets specialty's catered for almost every lunch meeting. I have never been impressed. Their bread is definitely a big size, but really has no flavor. Just a big soft loaf. The filling doesn't really stack up either. My sandwich often appears flat and underwhelming. And honestly, the produce is dry and doesn't seem fresh at all. And I could swear I have become sick from their sicillian sandwich. I just can't approve of their sandwiches.
Their salads are okay, but again, the lettuce seems old and dry. Their cookies are definitely good and worth going to a location for!
So with the plethora of sandwich shops in the FiDi,some even having delicious sandwich under $5, why Specialty's? To sum it up...Meh. I've experienced better. -
Review from Jamie M.

My love affair with Specialty's began quite innocently--really.
New to working in San Francisco, I found myself walking past a Specialty's every morning. I couldn't help but notice the long line in the mornings at the convenient take out window, the display case teeming with muffins, cookies, and croissants, and the heavenly aroma of freshly baked treats. I wanted to know what the fuss was all about.
So, it started with a cookie. My first experience at Specialty's was the Wheat Germ Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie. Specialty's is a cookie lovers delight. My meal-sized cookie was warm, gooey, and oh so tasty. I haven't tried the other cookies, because I'm pretty hooked on the novelty of eating a wheat germ cookie. But when that fades, I definitely look forward to sampling the others.
During my morning travels or to satisfy my 4:00 p.m. chocolate cravings, I've sampled some of Specialty's other baked treats--the croissants and the cinnamon roll among others. I find the rest of the baked treats to be pretty standard and lacking that extra something "special" they put into their cookies.
The prices are pretty typical for the product and the location, and I have had no problems with the service.
I'm not usually a fan of chain restaurants but if you find yourself near a Specialty's and you have a craving for something sweet, I definitely recommend the cookies. Yum, Yum!Listed in: Eats in FiDi

I Just love this place for lunch! The online order system is great and very convenient... Place your order on their website, Pick up your lunch and just walk out!
Sandwiches:
So far I have had the following and below is my rating on a scale of 1-10
Big BLT - 9 Great sandwich with tons of bacon!
Beef and Blue - 9, would give it a 10 but it had way to much spinach
Tuna - 10, What a great sandwich
Waldorf Chicken Salad - 1, All cranberry and walnuts, no chicken and tasted horrible!
Cookies are great! and the spicy cole-slaw is a nice add-on to your lunch.
All in all, 4 stars for this place :) -

I love how you can order online and customize your salad or sandwich or whatever else you want to order. My boss gets a kick out of building sandwiches with avocado, sauerkraut, peanut butter and bananas (it builds the sandwich on your computer screen)...yeah, great sense of humor. :)
I always order the 'Dawn's Vegan' without sunflower seeds and I add black olives and cucumbers. You pay online and you choose your pickup time and you don't have to wait in line when you get there.
The salads are a little inconsistent, but oh well it's usually pretty delicious!
Also the cookies are like CRACK! MmmmmmmmmListed in: Lunch In The Fidi

So a wheat germ chocolate chip cookie sounds kind of gross right? Its not! It's actually really good! Sometimes I run to Specialties for my afternoon snack. I consider it healthy since it has wheat germ in it.
I also really like the turkey and cranberry sandwich. I usually get that when I go, though one time I got the PB&Stuff, that was kind of gross. Too sweet for my taste buds. Their snickerdoodles are really good, same with their cinnamon bun. If you're ever stumped as to where to go for lunch, hit up Specialties. There's a really good selection of sandwiches, soups and sweets. -

Cookies so good they're made with amnesia. I've been eating these damn cookies for years and they temporarily remove a memory block in my head each time I eat one. The block makes me forget they exist and my life becomes a kind of Groundhog Day, only with cookies. I'll be all "Perhaps a small snack, these cookies look savory" and throw one back. It'll be scrumptious but will Jedi my noodle and I won't remember the cookies or Especiality's (sic) or whatever it's called. I don't even remember them now except I wrote a bunch of stuff on my arms. Real non sequitur stuff like "wheat germ chocolate chip". Who knows. Anyhow, far be it from me to make a joke about a VERY serious subject but it sucks that the one time I get roofied it's by a damn cookie.
While I was taking BART home from my cookie blackout and catching up on the reading of my arms I sat across from an elder Asian couple. The lady was clearly playing a gameboy. I'm thinking, "Wouldn't surprise me if she were playing Tetris or FUPA League Mahjong : Extreme, but it would be so boss if she were rocking some old school Super Mario or Bomberman. So I rolled down my shirtsleeves for a little scratch paper and hopped off at my stop to check what game she was rocking through the window. But I left my sharpie on BART and now I'll never know. Bad cookies!
Also, I'm told they have sandwiches here. My arms said nothing about them. Again also, another reviewer called this place a megachain. She seemed awful nice, but I scrawled something armwise about there only being 15 Especkletease in just 3 States. Not quite GM selling cookies at Sam's Club.
So the cookies are good, though likely drugged. Common side effects are mostly short-term blackouts and scribbling stuff on your arms. For many on Yelp, this would not require a change of plans.Listed in: Words With A 'K' Are Funny, Sandwich Me Nice

The grammar makes me itch. It really does.
But for the mornings, when life seems dark and wasted and won't amount to much besides this cubicle, their banana muffin (approx 8,000 calories) and their light, optimistic coffee is a surprising balm.

So I was sitting at my desk, listening to "Jitterbug" by Wham! on my ipod at work and I was thinking what could make this work day so much more awesome than it already is?
Well I'll tell you what, a Specialty's cookie, that's what!
Before my days of working in an office to support the family, I did pastry. It is my true calling and addiction. And even at 8 months pregnant, back hurting, feet throbbing and ankles swollen I still showed up every day to bake bread, make pasta, make pizza dough, and of coarse my favorite make desert.
In the scope of all things sweet I have two things that I really cannot resist:
1. pies and tarts, fruit ones particularly and lemon preferably
2. Cookies, of any sort
Now keeping that in mind and the fact that I was makeing both of these things on any given day, I would get off work and the first place I would hit on my way to the bus stop was Specialty's for a cookie and a corner store for a Vanilla Silk soy milk. This proves that these are some of the best cookies in the world, and I know a good cookie. I make a good cookie but I don't make these.
Anyways, due to weight watchers and the fact that I stupidly chose to write this review on my break I will not be enjoying a Specialty's cookie today.
But cookie, you "put the boom boom into my heart" and you make the "sun shine brighter than Doris Day"
"I was dreaming but I should have been with you instead!"
OH SWEET SWEET COOKIE!! -

I used to think Specialty's was a healthy option for lunch ...
until I went to their website and figured out that one of their sandwiches contains a whopping 1318.85 calories and 84.75 grams of fat. What the heck are they putting in there?
I thought I was being smart and asked for it on whole wheat (instead of focaccia) and skipped the mayo- surprisingly, that only brings you down to 1059 calories with 61.88 grams of fat - which is still way too much for a mediocre tasting sandwich. Their food should come with a warning label - even the salads are almost 800 calories. If I'm going to expend almost a whole day's calories on one meal it had better be worth it.
And what about the cookies? It's probably a good thing they don't offer up the nutritional info on those. -

Repeat after me: semi-sweet, semi-sweet, semi-sweet. Say that three times fast and you will be transported to nirvana. Specialty's is known for this. Yes they serve food, drinks and have napkins but who cares. The cookies are shaped like lumps. At first I thought they were just the muffin tops.
This location has them all, even later in the day. Black and white, wheat germ, semi-sweet, oatmeal and others. I rule out ordering the wheat germ based on the name and how it is a healthy choice.
Go for the tried and true semi-sweet. I rush down here during our regular "low-sugar cannot work afternoon cookie rush" and annihilate the warmed up goodness before reaching the bank of elevators.
Remember a warm cookie is a good cookie. No innuendos here. -

Warm semi-sweet chocolate chips melting in my mouth as I hunch over in my cubicle after lunch. How did I get lucky enough to work 50 feets from Specialty's Bakery.
Do you realize that you can be alerted via email when the cookies leave the oven! It's called a warm cookie alert, and you can sign up on the Company's website.
Besides baked goods, this Specialty's serves great breakfast items, soups and sandwiches.
But honestly, who are they kidding, it's all about the cookies.Listed in: A few of my favorite things, sweet tooth

When I used to feel that I've hit a plateau in my workouts, I would stop in and pick up a moist, chewy brownie...
and a wheatgerm choc chip cookie...
and sometimes an extra peanut butter choc chip for later.
I would, then, go home to lay on the couch to devour my entire bag of goodies while watching "I Love New York" and wake up the next morning motivate to hit the gym again.
