I contacted a couple of companies from Yelp, and Speaker of the House came in with the best price. My cheap ass decided to use him. I've never had a home inspection done before, so had no idea what to expect. Only when my realtor said "man, this guy is thorough, I think I'll have to start using him when people ask for suggestions" were my suspicions confirmed. This guy is great. I won't bore you with details, but some highlights are:
On time. Actually, early. He was there when we arrived
He took nearly two hours. Not because he was putzy, but because he went over EVERYTHING. Mind you, this was in an unheated foreclosure, so we were in a 20 degree place the whole time
He pulled out his own ladder and trudged up to the roof of a three story unit that had no snow removal done to it all season. I thought he might die. He just wanted to check out the air conditioning. Which I didn't even know it had.
In a few hours, we had a TEN PAGE report emailed to use with potential problems and how they rated...i.e. get this fixed now, or get this fixed when you win the lottery and have nothing but spare time and money lying around.
Really, really, great experience. And reasonably priced. Thanks yelpers.

Mike did a great job for us. Very thorough. Nice guy. Punctual. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to buy a home.
He saw a part of the ceiling that looked like it was painted differently. It was painted the same shade of white as the rest of the ceiling but Mike saw a difference in the texture suggesting drywall patching. Recommended that we ask the sellers about it. Told us how amazing it is that sellers begin remembering things when armed with lots of information. We asked the sellers through our attorney and found that there had indeed been evidence of water leakage in the past requiring patching of the drywall.

Nice guy and pretty organized and efficient. He went through the entire 3 flat and showed all potential problems and spent a fair amount of time in there. I was not that concerned about price but he did a good job (based on feedback by my agent).
My quibble is that there are some things that he could have been more detailed on and there are various city code violations that he missed.

I was in the stressful process of buying my first condo and Mike was the inspector I hired. He was at the property before I was (and I was early) already looking around the outside of the building. This guys knows everything and patiently explained everything he did as he went along. He emailed my inspection report by 7 pm (my inspection was at 3 pm) the same day.
The report was extremely thorough and he listed his recommendations and the things that absolutely needed to be fixed for safety reasons, and then other suggestions as well. His price is very reasonable as well; right in line with others. I'd recommend him to anybody.

I had Mike in for an inspection today. Not only was he prompt, courteous, and friendly, he was efficient and clearly knew what he was doing -- his 11 years' experience shows. He'll get your inspection to you via email in less than an hour from completion of the visit, and it's very thorough.
Not only did I get a list of issues, but he gave me his recommendations, rough approximation of work costs to address them, how to address them if I DIYed them, and talked with me about my ideas for home improvement and what might be necessary if I did particular cosmetic and/or physical changes to various things around the condo.
I got several estimates before choosing a home inspector. His price is in range with other inspectors, but I'm glad I choose him. He was extremely pleasant to deal with, honest without being painfully blunt, and I'd readily recommend him to anybody else looking for an inspector.

Mike is an awesome home inspector - arguably the best, based upon my personal experiences and conversations I've had with friends about other inspectors. We used him three times, two of them resulting in purchases and one resulting in us walking away from a townhome we were going to purchase. Most of the reviews on Yelp sum it up quite well. He is prompt, professional, thorough and very detailed oriented. The experience that really impressed me was when we decided not to buy a townhome that had major structural issues. The floors were sloping slightly in the second floor of a three story townhome, and both agents indicated it was the house settling (of course the agents said that; they'd do anything to get a deal closed!). However, Mike explained the problem, how it was caused (the builder didn't put proper support beams in the floor to account for the weight of the "optional" staircase to the third floor roofdeck), and what it may potentially cost to repair it, and how the problem could get worse over time. We decided that no closing or repair credit would be enough for us to move forward with the purchase, and he saved us from making a very big mistake. I've used Mike two times since and will recommend him to everyone I know that is looking for an inspector.
You'd be crazy not to use Mike!

Mike came highly recommended to me by a friend and he still managed to exceed expectations. As far as the inspection goes, I think he (and assistant John) hit all of the things that you'd look for: prompt, thorough, fair (i.e., not an agent's puppet out to push a deal through nor a ridiculous hardass trying to win inspector cred by quashing deals), and excellent at explaining and answering questions as he went. The report was returned promptly and with an amazing level of detail.
The unexpected part was that I got value beyond just the inspection requirements. He taught me a lot about the house and things to watch out for, regardless of whether they were report-worthy.
Do yourself and your house a favor - use the Speaker!
Very insightful indeed!! I never thought I would be this impressed with a home inspector but this guy is one sharp cookie! Nothing gets buy this guy!
I got a referral from a friend about this guy named 'Mike' who was a home inspector. I heard he was a no BS kind of guy and how he saved the day on his home inspection.
I decided to use his services and I was not disappointed. Mike is a VERY articulate speaker (hence the name of his company) and he made everything very clear to me and my Realtor.
He pointed out some very important plumbing issues that my condo had and also found some issues in the brick that really helped me in buying process.
Mike is a highly intelligent guy and he was also very punctual as well. I would STRONGLY suggest his services to all my fellow yelpers!
