Full disclosure - This was my pick for Check Please!, so obviously I like this place a lot.

Sometimes, you just want to avoid the usual crowd. Chicago's a big city but if you live here long enough, chances are you'll bump into someone sometime somewhere on any given weekend night.

If that's the case, Speakeasy is the right place to get far away from the madding crowd. It's hidden up north (in the city) near Devon and Clark. Typically, you don't expect to find a contemporary American cuisine restaurant in an area associated with greasy indian food (I'm indian so it's okay and valid for me to diss on Devon)

Speakeasy from the outside looks like one of those nondescript places that you expect are going to deliver the quality of a Leona's. But when you walk in, you're struck by a lofty urban feel with exposed brick walls and the ambient lighting. Feels just right.

The food has been consistently excellent - my favorites being the lamb, the grouper, and the mexican chocolate creme brulee. The ground lamb-stuffed portobello mushrooms along with the house salad, make good appetizers.

Of course, what takes this place to the next level is the BYOB tag. Two bottles of wine (or more) plus aforementioned dinner course is the recipe for the perfect night out.

Thursday nights have live music so if you're like me and actually like talking to people at the dinner table, then don't sit in the room where the music is playing. I love the energy at Speakeasy so this is definitely the kind of place where you want to have either a first date or a night out with a ton of friends. If you're a regular, they can actually hold your own wine in their cellar downstairs.

Overall, this is a restaurant that's on my "tried and true" list of dependable places for a night out with friends.

How did my first 20 minutes at Speakeasy go?  Not well.  We waited 20 minutes after our reservation time to be seated, and I twice asked for new silverware and glass because there were big fat fingerprints on them.

The fact that I still give this place 5 enthusiastic stars should speak volumes.  The service is top notch, and the food is one notch above that!  The ostritch meat and french onion soup are really something to write home about.

I've never experienced such happy and outgoing restaraunt staff.  After closing someone set up a dj booth and we a great time partying with the owner and the rest of the staff.

FYI:  BYOB

The Speakeasy Supper Club is such a fun place for dinner.  BYOB of course.  You can bring a bottle of gin & they'll mix a gin & tonic for you at the bar.  It's a great place to go for special occasions - the tab is a little pricey for typical BYOB's - but WELL worth it.  I love the old school tradition - like sorbet served between courses.  The food is always well prepared and presented beautifully.  The only downside is it is a bit loud.  Also, neighborhood gossip says the owner just sold the building & it will be torn down for condos *sigh*.

I've been here several times. This place always seems to be busy, especially with students from Loyola University. Sometimes the wait time can be a bit long, but the food is always fresh and great. I did think the restaurant was a bit loud, but with a group of friends, it's not really a big deal. But definitely not a spot to have a nice, relaxing dinner for two!

I tried this restaurant for the first time about a week and half ago. I really didn't know what to expect, but it was wonderful. The menu is very small, but high quality. A great assortment seafood dishes and salads, great for the health conscious eater. The food arrived fairly quickly. Sherbet was served to us between our appetizer and main course, on the restaurant.  I order the Angel hair pasta, as it was the night before the marathon. Delicious!! The perfect amount of seasoning..No marinara sauce provided, none needed. It is a byob restaurant, although they will provide wine keys. The only negative was the lighting. I like the dark, but it was too dark to read, I had to hold my candle to the menu. Otherwise, perfection, check it out!

Uncommon Ground is coming, but c'mon, can any place truly replace The Glenway Inn?  After an Irish wake at Maloney's it was THE place to get scnockered.  Of course, there is Cuneen's down the road a piece.

I have to say I was very disappointed in Speakeasy.  I had heard so many great things and I love BYOB!.  When we got there we were seated immediately which was nice.  We sat down and the hostess opened our bottle and poured our glasses.  I took a sip of wine and the glass was hot, like right out of the dishwasher.  I could not believe it.  We had brought a nice bottle of wine and I was horrified.  The waitress brought us new glasses with no apology.  We relaxed and ordered dinner.  My husband ordered the pork chop and I ordered the steak.  30 minutes later we were still waiting..the waitress brought us tempura squash blossoms stuffed with goat cheese because our meal was taking so long.  That was the best part of our meal!  They were incredible.  When our food came we were both less than impressed. My steak and my husband pork chop were tough and flavorless.
I might try again another time, but I was very disappointed.
