407 N 5th AveSparrow's, man, you are almost perfect. Hit this spot as a one stop market wonder -- they carry awesome stockage for your fridge. While I love Knight's Market for meat, I also will happily go to Sparrow's if it's open because they can have a decent selection of fresh produce, fancy pantsy butters, Deda's bakery croissants (my favorite!), and the amazing butcher block/seafood counter.
For the carniverous, try getting a few slabs from here because it's quailty. Great quality chicken and pork. As the butcher to cut up a fryer for you.
I'm not much of a meat eater, but while Sparrow Market specializes in fresh cuts of meat, they have a good selection of produce and packaged food as well.
The place smells great, partly because of the food in the store and because it's immediately adjacent to Kosmo, a Korean restaurant, and the Sweetwater cafe.
It's in the Kerrytown Market and Shops, and everything is cute and scenic there. The people watching is fun, and it's a one stop shopping experience. You could, theoretically, get some coffee at Sweetwater, a couple bottles of wine at Everyday Wine, a birthday card at Hollanders, and then pick up your weekly groceries at Sparrow Market.
The main issue here, as with all the shops in Kerrytown and the surrounding historic district, is parking. Kerrytown does have its own free lots, but they never have enough spots to accommodate all the traffic they get at busy times. You'll likely have to feed a meter or find a parking structure a few blocks away and walk back to Kerrytown.
I love me a good meat market. And Bob (the butcher) is incredibly knowledgeable about, well, meat. he only deals with local suppliers of organic and free-range meat. If he doesn't have a certain kind of meat that you'd like, he'll do special orders for you. It is more pricey than the supermarket, but then again, you aren't contributing to factory farming. (I stay awake at night thinking about these things, so you don't have to...)
The bacon is out of this world, as are the homemade sausages. It's right next to the Farmer's Market, so you can get a lot of your grocery shopping done for the week quite quickly.
The store also has a limited selection of produce and grocery store staples, which are okay but sort of pricey. They also offer Zingerman's bread, which is nice, but again, sort of pricey (only get the monthly special!).
If you happen to be shopping at Mudpuddles or coffeeing at Sweetwater, and you need a few veggies or some fruit and Zingerman's bread -- this is totally convenient. I wouldn't make it a destination grocery stop, but it offers just enough good stuff if you don't want to detour for dinner fixings.
