Sparky's, a diner? Sparky's makes itself seem like a diner, with 24/7 food, cheap options (although not that cheap by diner standards), casual atmosphere. They have everything you could ever want to eat - I'm surprised they don't offer human flesh. Since it's San Francisco, that means lots of vegetarian / vegan and unusual options too.

But Sparky's isn't REALLY a diner, it merely tries to be one by creating an atmosphere that's diner like. It ends up being diner-LITE. The service is not nearly as friendly, the food as unhealthy, or the food quite greasy enough. And they are all too accommodating with delivery to be a real hole-in-the-wall.

Real diner or not, it's nice to know there's a place in the city where I can buy burgers, fries, and the kitchen sink at all hours of the day and night. Thank god a place exists where I can decide it's a great idea to break a semblance of a healthy diet at 3am.

last night my party ordered a burger, chicken sandwich, and a cheesesteak.

the waiter returned with a burger, chicken sandwich, and a cheeseCAKE.

no, i didn't return the cheesecake. i ate it. and it was delicious.

i order 2 burgers and french fries and they only delivered me the burgers and no french fries. They charged me for the fries. When i called, i told them i am missing the fries and never called me back. I ordered my meat Medium RAre and it was well done and dry.

I'm giving Sparkeys one star because if you really are in a jam and need a late night snack they are pretty much one of the only delivery services open 24 hours.  I had an experience 2 nights ago that pretty much summed up how i have felt about Sparkys for the last 10 years. i ordered through grubhub and the food came on time. the delivery guy was courteous but was asking for payment. I explained to him that Ive already payed through grub hub. he brought his supervisor or someone up on the phone. The guy then continued to tell me that they took my order the phone and was lying. I kept hearing the girl in the background say" she got a malt right? I took her order over the phone shes lying." I was starting to get upset so I took my ipad out and said I would give them the grubhub confirmation number. I then put on hold without explanation. The poor delivery guy and I waited in my doorstep for at least 5 minutes then the phone operator came back on and said yeah its fine and hung up. No apology, nothing for calling me a liar and wasting my time and the delivery mans time. unfortunalty i will probably have to order from them again one late night and i will probably have a horrible experience with their phone staff. . . the price we pay for a milkshake and a burger at 2am.

i'm never ordering from Sparky's again! I would call this place all the time for late night deliveries on the weekend when no one else was open. I used to think they were great....but time and time again ordering from stupid counter guys and having to wait at least an hour for a really freaking stupid delivery guy has gotten to be too much and the countless times they have f**ked up my order and sent me the wrong things and food that is overpriced for that matter has made it hard to resist the urge to call back the person who took my order and verbally abuse them!
You f**kin suck Sparky's!...i'm learning to cook!

Be honest. You're here because you've been out all night and nothing else around is open. A while back I went in and ordered some onion rings. The order was small and probably cost about a dollar an onion ring. Onions aren't expensive and it's not like they were using some special organic heirloom onions from a local farm. What the hell? Another time I was with friends and they lost my friend's order two or three times. I'll pass, thanks.

I am bumping up their rating from my original 4-star rating because I realize now that when you are STARVING at 4am in the morning, and NOTHING is open, the fact that a place like SPARKY's is serving great diner food, in a sit-down establishment, at REASONABLE prices and actually HAS Onion Rings!  Well......they will get my 5-Star 4am in the morning rating.

Not bad if you don't mind being ignored by the waiter the whole time and paying about $2 more for every item than one typically pays at a diner - and I don't. The jukebox is kickass, the food is tasty (and as a vegetarian, I appreciate their options), the location is convenient, and honestly, it is kind of my go-to spot when I feel like being left alone because it's always half empty and the waiters, while usually friendly enough whenthey do occasionally descend (or weird enough that you can't possibly take their unfriendliness personally), will hardly be in sight. Sometimes that's what I want, sometimes in broad daylight and sometimes in the dead of night, and when I want that, I know I always can go to Sparky's.

I ate at Sparky's last night for the first time. It exceeded my expectations. It's a very friendly atmosphere and the food is of pretty good quality - especially for a diner that serves 24 hours.

The ketchup and the jelly wasn't all organic, natural and Agave sweetened and what not, but it's ok. i wouldn't eat there all the time because there wasn't a very versatile selection of menu items for vegans. I was able to find a tofu burrito with vegan sausages on the side. The food was fresh and delicious and I was very content.

I cannot help but briefly talk about the waiter - I should've asked his name. He is the dopest waiter I ever saw!!. He's a like a good looking guy in his early 20's. His general demeanor and character was extra-ordinary in an entertaining way!! :) He looked very spacey very shy and introverted. He would not talk to you when you ask him a question but try to communicate with gestures, uncoordinated and vague head movements and quiet babbles!!!. As if he's living in an 11- dimensional world and we're just seeing a 3 dimensional projection of him in our tiny world..  He's the living proof of string theory !!

I imagine my pitiful review will be mired in the sea of six hundred-plus other reviews, but whatever--it does mean I can procrastinate at work for another minute or two.

Sparky's is nothing special. I've had very good experiences where I received good, hot, fresh-tasting food, and other experiences where the ingredients tasted old, the bread was soggy, and the service was just slow.

The only real thing that Sparky's has going for it is that it's open all the time. This is not to be undervalued! Need a shake or some nachos or something after a long night on the town? Here's your place. Otherwise, if you want a good lunch, Crepevine may be a better bet.

    Never coming here again.

I've gone here only a few times and only received terrible service.

I'm going to start with the one good thing.  The young man who helped me today.  He wasn't rude, which was a change.  Past times I've gone, the people who have helped me have been nothing but downright MEAN to me.

The last time I went, they were playing dub-step pretty loud.  If you don't know what that is, please youtube it.  In the club I wouldn't mind it, though it is annoying.  When trying to eat, and you hear "WOB WOB WOB WUBWUBWUBWUB" blasting over the speakers, it starts to make one... not hungry.  When I asked to change the music, at least the volume, they were straight up rude about it.

Today, I was supposed to meet up with a friend who eventually flaked out on me.  Well, since I'm already there, I might as well try and cheer myself up with some blueberry pancakes.  The waiter took my order, and goes.  He comes back a few minutes after to tell me that they are out of blueberries, but that they can do another type.  So I chose strawberry.  No big deal, it's all good to me!  I get my food, and take a few bites... than I start to realize that the middle of my pancakes are completely undercooked.  Have you ever eaten pancake batter uncooked?  It's disgusting in texture, and it can actually make you pretty sick.  I mention it to him, and he offers to take it back to cook it more.

Honestly, I don't trust them to re-cook my food.  On top of that, I would NOT want pancakes recooked when they already have syrup and butter on them!  I just ask for my check.  What do I get back?  The receipt with only my drink taken off.  While I appreciate the kind gesture, I was still pretty shocked.  The drink was fine.  but why am I still paying $6.00 for a meal I couldn't eat because they couldn't cook something so simple properly?

Once again, I appreciate that the waiter was kind to me, but I felt like I got jipped not only by my friend who flaked, but also the establishment I was eating at.  I have been working in customer service for years, and if this was an establishment I owned, I would never let people like the ones who work there get away with these things.  It doesn't need to have 5 Star customer service for being a 24 Hour diner, but the customers themselves should never feel as insulted as I do.

I hope that Sparky's gets their act together, if not close down.

As a San Franciscan I'm ashamed this is one of the few options for late  night food that isn't a taco or burrito.

    I'm tired of burritos...

...and Best of Thai Noodle won't deliver to me

.... and Grubsteak is too far away

... and I had to take out a loan to go to Nopa (once)

well, there's always cereal I guess, assuming I haven't run out of peanut butter.

I used to get sparky,s 2 or 3 times a week but the last few times has not been so good. After my last experience I will never order from them again. I wanted to resolve this with a manager who I asked to call me back twice and they never did. I would like to add a pic of what they sent me as food so you could  see for yourself why I wanted the manager to call me. It's a health and safety issue. I had ordered eggs Benedict and at first glance it looked like scrambled eggs on the top. It was a dry curdled yellow flakey substance piled on the top sent to me as hollandaise sauce. I can't believe someone in the kitchen put this out. There is no way that they wouldn't know that it was rancid. Sauce especially since it was dry flakey scooped on goop. I feel the way they have handled the situation is the same way they handle your food. Beware.

Great Place for the late night munchies! - They deliver. Breakfast and burgers were always good. After they changed the menu a few years ago, I've hadn't had a real chance to try their food, but the soups are good, shakes, malts.

I tried their pastas and desserts... great food for the price. I think they have Pizza again, I know they did years and years ago. Worth checking out.

We ordered online for delivery last night.  I am still pretty disgusted by the whole experience the next day, so I am compelled to write a review.
The best part of the experience was ordering online.  The software is really good.  Ordering was easy.
    The prices seemed reasonable.

    Then we waited for delivery.

There is a statement that the order will take around 20mins to prepare and 45-60 mins to deliver.  I hoped that my food would not be sitting in a box for up to an hour.  I hoped in vain.  It took an hour and 10 mins for the food to arrive.
We were all VERY hungry and ate what arrived, even though it was luke warm, we ate it anyway.

The burger wasn't cooked properly.  Nor did it come with the things asked for.

The garlic cheese bread was cold and seemed to be re-solidified cheese with whole chunks of garlic in it.

The $12 steak sandwich was slightly smaller in size than my smart phone.  The tomato slices for it were inedible.  They were clearly not cored before cutting and were mostly stem.  And they were limp and grainy.  Onion had seen better days too.

The BBQ chicken ordered was so bad the guy eating it told me, if he wasn't so hungry he wouldn't have been able to eat his.

    Indigestion followed.

When I posted about it on my Facebook wall a thread began of locals and former visitors about how really bad the place has been in recent years.  I wish I had posted before we ordered and wasted money and time.
I have no idea how this place has reviews here with any more than one star.  As this was shockingly bad. Even for diner food.

Upon walking into this place, I could swear that I had been here before when I was younger, but I wasn't too sure.  Let's just say this was my first time, since I couldn't remember the other time I had went.

I came here for breakfast/lunch one day and from what I can remember, we weren't greeted right away when we first walked in.  I found this to be a little strange because there was only one table in the restaurant.  Eventually we got greeted and seated.  I picked a table by the window.  Maybe not such a good choice, I would later find out.

In my efforts to be healthy, I ordered a breakfast plate that had scrambled egg substitute, two soy sausage patties, fruit and toast.  My friend got a burger.  I ordered a coffee, and he ordered a beer.

I remember the food taking a little while, which (once again) I found to be a little strange because we were the only customers in the restaurant for a good minute.  I needed a refill on my coffee but our server didn't check on us for a while.  There was only one guy working, but still, we were the only customers he had.  When our food was finally delivered, it was ok.  Nothing too spectacular.  It was my first time having soy sausage patties and I found them to be pretty good seeing as how I am a carnivore and I love meat. My friend wasn't too impressed with his burger but he ate it anyway.

I remember waiting a while to get our check and cash out.  Things just seemed to take a little too long at this place.  All in all this place was just a little "eh."  A-OK is definitely a suitable rating for Sparky's.  Sorry.

We ordered a meatloaf sandwich, not a MEATLESS sandwich, dimwit. That's why you only got a dollar tip. Well, besides your abysmal service, put-upon attitude, dry-ass BLT, and half-filled soda cups.

Even considering you're probably coming here after you get out of the bar, the food is pretty mediocre and the service terrible.

The vegan burger I got was extremely bland, despite all the condiments I had at my disposal. And the curly fries, which I normally love, were made up of all the little bits of the fries. What's the point of getting curly fries if you're not getting any curls?!

The waiter was completely clueless and the food took a while to come out. And the most god awful music was playing the whole time. It was 100% bad rock/pop remixes, straight out of the worst circle of hell. Yes, I know it's probably unrealistic to expect a lot of quality at 3 or 4 in the morning, but I've been to a lot of other places that provide a better experience than this.

I keep trying Sparky's because I want to like it so badly. They have a gigantic menu and they deliver until 4am, so they are quite the resource.

But their food is bland. I've eaten a late night dinner there once before, but this review is for delivery.

I ordered of a bowl of mac and cheese, along with chicken strips. The mac and cheese was almost flavorless, and arrived in a coffee cup. I don't really have an issue with the latter, but lack of flavor matched up with lack of presentation isn't a great combo. Made me kind of wish I spent 5 times less the amount and just went and picked up a box of Kraft.

I had a major craving for some legit chicken strips, but Sparky's version wasn't at all what most people would have in mind. I expected some meaty, deep friend pieces of chicken. But what I got was a very thin chicken breast, lightly breaded, and then cut into 1/2 pieces after the fact.  So it was only partially breaded, was extremely dry, and also had very little flavor.

Their mozzarella sticks and cheeseburgers seemed to be solid, but anything else I've ordered was pretty much cafeteria food. But hey, they deliver rather quickly. Maybe I'm just ordering the wrong stuff. Or maybe I should just reserve them for drunchies exclusively.

    24 hours, huh?

It's 3:35am.  I call Sparky's.  They answer on the first ring:

"Sparky's, can I ask you to hold?"
    "Sure!"

14 minutes and 55 seconds later...

Doesn't seem like they're coming back.  I call back and wait for several rings until someone answers.  I ask politely to place an order for delivery, which their website states they offer.  Rude gentleman from Sparky's responds:

    "We stop delivering at 3:50am."

    It's 3:52am.

I kindly mention that I originally called at 3:35 and they put me on hold for almost 15 minutes.  Surly gentleman tells me I should have called back sooner.

this is a delivery specific review.

Don't bother, a recent order was scheduled for 75 minute delivery, ended up at 90 minutes, in either case, the food (that's barely edible fried junk on a good day) was stone cold.

Not even worth a call back to complain, I should have known better from the moment I heard they offered delivery.  I'll never order from them again.

Tonight I called to order dinner from your restaurant. The girl who answered the phone could not hear anything I said because your music was so loud she could not hear my order.

After trying to tell her what a "BLT' was, she said I'm sorry the music here is really loud. My response was well, that's not my fault, why don't you turn it down?... She replied with a snotty " it's not my fault either, I don't set the music". Nice.. really nice customer service and manners....

With all the food places in this city there is NO WAY I will give a dime to a shop that has such attitude, no manners, and hires a completely unprofessional moron who apparently thinks that keeping her job, making tips, and having an income in this time where NO ONE can even get a job.. is not worth saving or caring about.

I have ordered from Sparky's in the past.. but I will NEVER do it again. It's not rocket science to know that if your staff is so uneducated that they can't turn down "music" to hear and take your order.. your business is not appreciated either.

And so where is the owner? Who is the manager and owner of this place that consistantly get's one star here on yelp... ? Don't they care, don't they have any self worth or integrity? If I owned a place and it got one star reviews.. I'd be humiliated, ashamed, pissed..

I guess if the owner doesn't care it makes sense the staff doesn't either.

    Go anywhere else..

Sparky's is kind of the go-to standard, "Am I going to get food poisoning? Fuck it, let's do it anyway" sort of place. Given that they're 24 hours it can be difficult to turn it down when drunk in the mission.

BUT. Today I actually went sober- horrible idea, their food tastes like the dish that you ordered, only after being vomited back up. After a longer than necessary wait (there were maybe 3 other people in the place) we finally get our order. Surrounded by grubby mirrors with the faces of patrons past imprinted on them with sweat, our trip also included awesomely wilted lettuce, slices of tomato that look like they were cut with the blunt end of a butter knife, and a too-cool-to-smile server who, upon my refusal for a soda refill, condescendingly informed be that refills are free, so I don't have to worry about THAT. But this is all kind of standard.

The fucked up part came when we left. I have a bad habit of doing the math in my head and writing the total instead of filling out each individual line of the ticket, and our dumbass server couldn't take a moment to practice a little subtraction. As we're walking out he power walks over, GETS UP IN MY FACE, and starts ASKING ME WHAT MY PROBLEM WAS. "Did the food take too long, was it not good enough?!" I blinked at him, totally disturbed and pointed at the total on the ticket. He gave a "silly me!" sort of laugh.

"Seriously? Were you going to chase me down over this?"
"Well yeah, you'd be surprised with how people are."
I tried to reason with him, explained that I used to be a server, and you just can't win them all. His response? A snotty "well, I'm not like you" before turning on his heels and zipping away.

Should have taken that ticket out of his hands and ripped it in half.

I'm not drunk or high enough to deal with these people.

I came in here with 5 of my coworkers for lunch, and although the grubby little diner was fairly empty we had to seat and grab the sticky menus for ourselves. no big deal.

We're a fairly indecisive bunch, so it took a while for all of us to decide what to order. After all that time, however, we noticed that not once had the waitress attempted to take our order or check up on us. She spent all her time running to the kitchen (even though no one in the restaurant had their food), or looking preplexed in front of the cashier machine.

We finally flagged her down just to take our order, but instead of coming over and spending one minute writing down our order she turned around and stared.

    "I'm really busy right now."

I'm sorry, I didn't realized I'd distracted you from your highly important kitchen wandering. I should have considered how difficult it must be to put down five orders. My bad.

Maybe they should hire people who can function in the daylight.

I came here after raving around 2 or 3am. It was packed! But we got a seat right away.

The food here isn't bad. I had the eggs benedict, but i think because i was tired and buzzed, that I didn't get to fully enjoy my food. I picked at my benedict and some of the hashbrowns.

Prices were good and service was ok. It has dim lighting too.

I would come back if I weren't too buzzed. I want to enjoy my food sober next time.

Didn't think one could screw up scrambled eggs, guess I was wrong because Sparky's did just that along with the rest of my meal.  Overall pretty bad, everything on my plate tasted the same, like a greasy grill.  The meal sat in my stomach for the rest of the day.  Service was mediocre.  There are so many good places in SF to eat breakfast at, I would pass on Sparky's unless it's 3 AM in the morning after a night of drinking.

    Cute girl with tats. =)

Oh what else...bomb French Toast. She was right when she recommended them. Seriously one of the best French Toast I've had in a while. It was perfectly crispy on the outside and gooey in the middle. Noms.

Fries were ok. Not that great, not crispy enough for me. Open late.

First off, I feel abused having to give this restaurant the courtesy of one star.

2nd, I would rather eat my own shit.

3rd, the only reason I ended up at this horrible craphole was bc my taxi driver was pissed at us and used this place as revenge.

4th, this is my first yelp, so I feel very strongly about the nastiness, I had to endure this evening. Even being drunk this food tasted like shit. It wasn't even drunk food, it was poison.

5th, As soon as I got home I immediately put my face in the toilet. And word of the wise, it tastes worse coming up, to my surprise I didn't think it was possible.

    Avoid at all costs....

Oh and the plastic cheese on top of that dog meat chili was so shiny I could see my reflection. That shit aint real. It makes Kraft cheese look like gourmet gruyere.

Shelly our waitress said her name was Chili, I think she was brainwashing us to order the chili bc it was about to turn.

Terrible terrible experience!  I came here with a group of 8. There was no one in the restaurant besides us, and yet, it took 20 minutes just to have a waiter get our drink order. Then it took 30 minutes, yes, 30 minutes just to get us our drinks- and most people just had water. I had a mimosa, which was basically orange juice with a splash of champagne! I'm pretty sure its suppose to be the other way around! Only a few of us ate, but no one seemed to like their food. Either way, almost an hour just to get drinks? You kidding me?

Their peanut butter cup milkshake gets 4 stars, but everything else was pretty lame. I got biscuits and gravy, and it was not tasty. My date got pancakes with strawberries. I believe that if you pay extra for the fruit, you should get more than 2 sliced strawberries, that is simply a joke.

I guess this place is useful because it is open 24 hours, but if anything else is open, you should probably go there over this place.

Sparky's used to be a favorite of mine. They have lowered the bar beyond forgivable and the last three times I have ordered "vegetarian" items from them they have put HAM in my fake chick sandwich, HAM in my Eggs Florentine, and BACON on my veggie burger. I tried to chock it up to an accident the first two times but this is unforgivable. If you are a vegetarian you should seriously reconsider ordering from them or look over your food before you take a bite out of it.

    Open 24 hours.

One of 3 American diners open late night along Market street - Bagdad Cafe (now closed), and Orphan Andy's.

I dined here a few times because Chow across the street, closes at midnight. The extensive diner menu now includes pizzas ($14-$24.75) and a delivery service, until 3:45am only. Good for neighborhood residents.

The huge variety of the menu is x4 larger, and burgers & salads prices are $1-3 less than Bagdad Cafe. Entrees are priced around $12, a few around $15. Since I don't live in this area I've never tried their delivery service or the pizza.
