Having just recently moved to Portland (along with half of California), I was not looking forward to the arduous process of finding a new stylist who could work with my thick, curly hair - and tread that line between making me look like a decently-groomed guy while still retaining some wildness.

I called up Spank after reading the reviews here on Yelp, and made an appointment with Randee. They were able to fit me in the next day, yay! I rode my bike over in the morning, and arrived a little early, taking in the cool atmosphere, artwork, and surprisingly readable magazines, even for a guy.

Randee got the idea of what I wanted really quick and started in. Randee was talkative but not distractingly so, and made me feel very comfortable at the salon - not always the easiest place for a guy to feel at home. The whole haircut only took maybe 20 minutes, and I've been very happy with it. It's growing out in an interesting way, I've continued to enjoy it as it gets longer again. To top off a great visit, the whole shampoo and cut cost me half what I used to pay for a so-so cut in Los Angeles. Woot!

Spank has great hours, open later in the evenings most nights (although call to be sure). The interior is really pleasant, and the people who work there are fun and easygoing. It's hip without being pretentious, and it's also quite cozy and comfortable, too.

They cut my bangs just a tad too short, but that was mostly my fault because I suck at giving direction. Otherwise, I love my haircut, and loved my stylist, Randee - she was kind and funny, and is very good at appearing to actually care how I respond to the questions hairstylists always ask to make the whole experience less awkward.

I left wishing I knew her better and feeling vaguely that we had a special report - this illusion is one salons have an interest in perpetrating, and let's just say they're good at it here, which to me is a hallmark of a salon that not only does good work, but also treats people well and has great customer service. I will go back again.

I referred my brother there, and he's been back twice, so they must do a good job on men as well.

With lots of thick curly hair I am a nightmare for many stylists and have had more bad haircuts than I can count. I actually gave up having it cut for about six years and just had friends and family give the occaisional trim. Spank was my first venture back to the salon world and I was thrilled with the experience. My stylist Randee was fantastic, she understood that trimming 5" off my hair meant it would actually be 12" shorter when dry. She was able to thin and layer my hair without making it look mulletish and made it soooooo much more manageable. Randee was able to give me a cut that was flattering, allows me to style it how I always have and hopefully pull off some nifty 1940's dos as well. On top of all this, the space is cozy and their prices are quite reasonable (I paid $35 for a difficult cut).
