Lauren is a guru! After realizing that I looked too shaggy for my night out, she squeezed me in early the same morning and let me tell you...she is a wizard with the shears. She gave me an awesome cut that was everything I wanted, and more! She did a rather fabulous job shaping the rather lifeless mane atop my head. The studio is beautiful and warm, the other stylists were friendly and their cat, Portland, is a totally sweetie. Will definitely be going back.

I have been going to Lauren for a while now- there is no reason for me to stop. She does a great job every time. I have very short hair and I am amazed by how often people mess it up. Not Lauren. She has done quite a few styles on me and I am happy each time.
She takes her time and is very precise. Also, I have noticed that it grows out looking much better now that she is cutting my hair.
If you want a sweet cut from a friendly and engaging lady go to Lauren. -

When I walked into Spank!, my hair was down to my waist, as it had been for several years. I was ready for a small change and eager to do it. I wanted to cut about 6 in. off my hair and layer it to give it body and shape. And that's what I told Lauren, the young, friendly hairdresser that I had an appt. with. Eventually, I decided to go for around 8 in. so I could donate it.
Before I really knew it, Lauren put a rubber-band in my hair and cut off a 12 in. ponytail (which she didn't bother to show me before she took the scissors to it). I quietly panicked and remained friendly, I didn't really know what to do. In the end, it's soo much shorter than I wanted and I don't see any layers or shape.
The salon is comfortable and lovely, she and the owner were friendly, but I had been pretty specific about what I wanted and got something totally different. Despite my stunned look and my saying, "It's so short," she seemed completely unaware of the fact that she hadn't done what I had asked for at all.
Unfortunately, I had a bad experience here - I'm very unhappy with my haircut. -

finding a new place to get a haircut is one of the hardest things to do. I think it is on the same level as finding a new doctor or dentist. it really does matter who you chose to handle something so important. after all, you see your hair everyday, you might as well have it looking good. I made an appointment at spank after reading the good reviews and because of their reasonable prices. I was about to go to bishops, but reasoned for only $10 more i could get a shampoo and a style and have someone take their time with my hair.
the studio is super nice, cozy and warm and they have a couch where you can read magazines while you are waiting. My stylist really took the time to get my hair looking perfect and suggested product without being pushy. He actually gave me a little free sample to try out which is really awesome. I am recommending this place to everyone i know and cannot tell you enough about how happy i am with my new haircut. It is worth the extra ten bucks to get a great cut and great service. -

I finally found a hair salon that I look forward to going back to! I have struggled with my hair ever since I went pixie a year ago. The grow out has been so awkward to deal with. I found Spank on Yelp and decided to give it a try. I was able to get a next day appointment, and explained that I needed to stick within a certain budget. "No problem!"
My stylist was Jamison, and he was so awesome. He listened to my rants and raves about previous hair stylists and took into account what had been done to my hair in the past and where I wanted to go in the future BEFORE he started cutting. Conversation wasn't forced, and he was obviously very experienced.
My favorite part, (other than the haircut) was the fact that he actually shampooed my hair. THANK YOU! After going to salon after salon that thought flat ironing my hair and cutting it dry would be the best way to go... I finally got my head in a sink! I hate leaving the salon with flat limp hair because the stylist decided that was "the best way to go." WASH MY HAIR! And Jamison did.
Ya know what else was great? He didn't push product on me. In fact he recommended some in-store brands they didn't carry based on my budget. He didn't force me to make another appointment in 2-3 weeks. They offer free band trims. AND he said if it started looking funky and I decided I wanted to go a different way, they guarantee their cuts! So I can get it fixed free of charge.
I would recommend Spank to ANYONE. I left looking classy with a twist. There's a cat on the sofa, a dog on the floor; it's like getting your haircut at your best friend's house. (And your best friend is the best hair stylist EVER.) Two happy thumbs way up. -

Spank has great hours, open later in the evenings most nights (although call to be sure). The interior is really pleasant, and the people who work there are fun and easygoing. It's hip without being pretentious, and it's also quite cozy and comfortable, too.
They cut my bangs just a tad too short, but that was mostly my fault because I suck at giving direction. Otherwise, I love my haircut, and loved my stylist, Randee - she was kind and funny, and is very good at appearing to actually care how I respond to the questions hairstylists always ask to make the whole experience less awkward.
I left wishing I knew her better and feeling vaguely that we had a special rapport - this illusion is one salons have an interest in perpetuating, and let's just say they're good at it here, which to me is a hallmark of a salon that not only does good work, but also treats people well and has great customer service. I will go back again.
I referred my brother there, and he's been back twice, so they must do a good job on men as well. -

Having just recently moved to Portland (along with half of California), I was not looking forward to the arduous process of finding a new stylist who could work with my thick, curly hair - and tread that line between making me look like a decently-groomed guy while still retaining some wildness.
I called up Spank after reading the reviews here on Yelp, and made an appointment with Randee. They were able to fit me in the next day, yay! I rode my bike over in the morning, and arrived a little early, taking in the cool atmosphere, artwork, and surprisingly readable magazines, even for a guy.
Randee got the idea of what I wanted really quick and started in. Randee was talkative but not distractingly so, and made me feel very comfortable at the salon - not always the easiest place for a guy to feel at home. The whole haircut only took maybe 20 minutes, and I've been very happy with it. It's growing out in an interesting way, I've continued to enjoy it as it gets longer again. To top off a great visit, the whole shampoo and cut cost me half what I used to pay for a so-so cut in Los Angeles. Woot! -

I have been going to Spank on Alberta for about 6 months to get my hair cut. It started off as a "Hmm that's an interesting name..." while walking by one day, to a place I trust with my hair. I had longish hair awhile back when I decided it was time to try something new. Now, it's kind of a big deal to pick a new hairdresser in general, and then wanting it short for the first time in a long time is also a huge leap. So, I put my faith in a clever name and location of this hair salon and I was not disappointed. I made an appointment with Randee, who very patiently helped ease me into a short hair cut. I can trust her to shape my cut really well. I always get compliments on my hair, and I owe it to how she cuts it really. She is also super sweet.
I like that it's a small salon with only a few clients in at a time. It makes for a laid back atmosphere with a very "Portland" vibe. -

My sister brought me to this salon while I was visiting her in Portland. Mitch stayed late...after closing...to cut, color, and style both of us. He was awesome, the price was great, and the decor was warm and inviting. He had the funniest book there called "S#$t my dad says". My sister and I were reading excerpts to each other, talking about the lastest news in our and Mitch's lives, and just having a blast. I felt like I was at a friend's house, not a salon getting my hair done. I would make him my permanent stylist, but the cost of a plane ticket from NYC to Portland every 6-8 weeks would be too much. I will, however, time my family visits to coincide with my hair styling needs as much as possible. Thank you, Mitch!

I love this place. First, if you live in the Alberta area, it's awfully convenient, and who wants to get in their car or on their bike and go across town for a 10 a.m. Saturday appointment? Second, the interior is incredibly cozy--Tiffany-style ceiling lamps, big overstuffed couches, good magazines. Third, the stylists are great--they listen and they clearly have a good rapport with one another; no cattiness here. Randee has given me a great cut and an awesome color treatment which made my auburn hair autumn-appropriate. Oh, and they have one of those old-fashioned hair dryers that you sit under to let your color soak in, which is awesome.
Finally, prices are incredibly reasonable- $35 for a women's cut, and my one-step color was $50, which is a bargain considering the quality. Tip well.

I had my hair done yesterday by Randee Cole. She did a GREAT job! I was stuck in a rut, feeling like everyday was a bad hair day. I went in and she scheduled me in for the next day. When I got in, I looked through some hair magazinesand told her that I wanted something sexy but that would require very little upkeep...that's what I got! I came in with really boring hair and left feeling fly!
BOTTOM LINE: it's pretty inexpensive with an intimate atmosphere, and approachable personalities who listen and take care of your hair. -

After my previous salon up and went out of business one day, I was left without my regular stylist and feeling like I'd been dumped. I found out where she ended up working but would have appreciated a phone call to let me know since I was on her books as having an appointment within the month that they disappeared.
I was recommended Randee at Spank by my sister and decided to take a chance! Randee was great at styling my hair and listening to my needs and I've gotten more compliments on my short 'do with her than anyone else before! She's super friendly and easy to talk to. I've never gotten a cut with Mitch but have seen his talented work. All the people at Spank, including the resident animals there that hang out while you get your hair cut, make getting your hair cut a great experience! Go make your next appointment here...just make sure you don't book over my spot! -

Colleen is the best - she's cut and colored my hair for a dozen years. (When she left for a couple of years to live in AZ I was devastated...so thrilled that she returned last year!) While her hair skills are top notch - I've never ever left her chair without being entirely pleased with my cut/color - I also appreciate her communications skills. When I've wanted to do something new that she thought would be a mistake given my hair type, she's explained her concerns while leaving the decision up to me. However, I've always followed her advice as she's never steered me wrong. She's also got an amazingly warm, sparkling personality...you can't help but love her. ;-)

I got my hair cut last week and have to say I will be back for my next cut. Lauren did such a good job. I have had two horrible haircuts since the lopping off of my dreads and going to see Lauren gave me hope again. She knew just what to do. Thanks! One downside, I'm addicted to the product she reccomended. All around great experience!

I depend on my hair to look fly. I have a big head full of shirley temple curls, and because of my mixed ( black and white) heritage, finding a stylist is..like, UGH. I took yelp's advice and rolled the dice with a cat called Randee over at spank. Okay, mixed girls, do not roll your eyes at the silken haired, fair skinned young Randee. This lady knows what she's doing. She had that simple, quiet confidence that I assume comes with having hooked up many a curly/nappy/frizzy customer. The salon's dynamic was easy going, so I felt okay telling embarrassing stories about how wack my hair looked lately. I felt so comfortable and assured. She was bantering lightly, but she never lost focus of my do. She was done in less than 30 minutes!! My true test of a haircut is, of course, the day after. I hopped out of the shower, styled as i usually do, and HOT DAMN, my curls were bouncy, shiny , with none of the dead weight that produces nasty curl by-product, frizz. The A-line shape is banging, and suits me perfectly. I am so happy with it. I wholeheartedly recommend Randee to every weirdly curly haired mixed girl in Portland ( all 7 of you)

whelp, that's what i get for bleaching my own hair. then dying it. then dying it again the next day. which is to say, what i get is a "chemical haircut." no me likey. spank was called immediately, duh. but oops, they were closed. two days of clever hairstyling were in order, then i went into spank and magic happened again! thanks for making sure going from shoulder length to pixie was cute and gamine, not traumatic!
