My bf and I came here after a long day of sight-seeing and many days of eating really random (bad) food. We were hoping the food would be good, and for the most part, it was.
I liked that we had a choice of breads, not just a standard breadbasket they plunk down before you. I got the parmesan flatbread (almost as long as a slice of NY-style pizza, and about half as wide). It had a nice, subtle parmesan flavor. I also got the rosemary wheat bread. It was ok, but not memorable.
In lieu of a formal dinner, we got appetizers and dessert. The ahi poke with shaved bonito in sesame cones were delicious. The cones were made of some kind of sugar and/or starch, and had a light, crispy texture. It wasn't too sweet or too starchy. I don't usually like raw rish, but it was cut into small pieces and seasoned well enough for me to like it. It was actually the most interesting combination of textures and flavors I've come across in a long while.
The server was nice enough to ask if we wanted another cone so that we could have two cones each instead of sharing the usual three per order (they do charge extra for it; it's pro-rated, so it's an extra $8.25 or so). Spago gets points for service, with a caveat (see last paragraph for details).
We got a seafood risotto, which I didn't like much, but then, I haven't had a risotto that I did like, so maybe I'm not the right person to judge. But my bf liked it. I can't remember what the third app was, not because it was bad, I don't think, but because we ate out 2-3 times every day, and I just can't remember what it was now.
For dessert, we got a soufflé (I think it was banana and chocolate) a la mode and my bf had the pineapple cake. Both were good, but I thought mine was better.
Service was kind of weird; we got seated by the hostess, shown the menu by another person, our orders taken by a third. We were served by no fewer than 5-6 people total. It was kind of disconcerting sometimes. Also, our last server asked us three times (after we finished our last appetizer, after getting dessert, and after he took the empty dessert plates away) if we wanted anything else. That was annoying. Oh, and the hostess who greeted us must have been tired and off her game, but when we approached her podium and started looking at the menu, she said something like, "Can I help you?" instead of something like "Table for two?" I mean, what else would we be doing there?
In the end, our three appetizers and two desserts came out to $130 before tip. A lot of money, but probably the best meal we had during our 10-day trip to Hawaii.
I really wanted to like Spago a lot more than I did. We went here on our 2nd day in Maui and wanted a nice splurge meal. We did a lot of research and I decided on Spago because I perused their menu online and it looked pretty good. However, when I got there, the dish I wanted, the deep fried whole Moi fish, was not available. Too bad. The hubs decided he wanted to do the tasting menu, and he rarely, if ever, does a tasting menu so I jumped on the opportunity. I honestly didn't really see what was on the tasting so that could have been why I did not enjoy the food that much. Service, however, was excellent and that is why I gave more than 2 stars.
We started off with the Ahi tuna poke "cones" which is their signature appetizer. This was pretty good. It was seasoned well, and the cones had a nice sweet sesame flavor. However the next 2 courses featured Ahi as well, which I thought was kind of strange. They were not bad dishes, but I think I was bored of ahi at that point. We also had a seafood risotto which was decent, in a creamy tomato seafood broth. The entree portion, which was ahi (again) and mahi mahi - didn't taste that great. The sauces on both were too cloyingly sweet, and overpowered both fishes. We also had lamb, which was much better, but I thought my lamb was cut a bit too thick resulting in a slightly tougher filet. But it was still good.
Dessert was probably the highlight - an island style milkshake in a mini shot glass, and molten chocolate cake, which you can never go wrong with and their version was made very well. They even wrote "Happy Anniversary" on our plates! Once again, the service was wonderful, but it's too bad we did not enjoy the tasting menu as much as we would have liked. Maybe if I ordered off the menu, I might have been happier with the food. It is also quite pricey for the tasting, at 135pp.
However, the ambiance and view at the Four Seasons is really the main draw here, and we had a wonderful time enjoying the sunset views.
Visited Spago on the first evening arriving for our honeymoon. Everything about the place met my expectations. The food, ambiance, and service were all wonderful.
We started with salads and the famous Ahi cones (we can see why they are so popular...awesome). I had the Salmon that was perfectly done and my wife had the Ahi entree.
We will definetly be back to Spago's on our next visit.
By far one of the best restaurants I've ever been to. Great for special occasions. If you're seated outside, make sure you get a seat facing the ocean; the sunsets are amazing.
Went here during my honeymoon, and it was amazing.
The steak I had was great, but the thing I really loved was their tomato salad. It was so simple, but just perfect.
Ambiance. How can you beat open-air dining overlooking the Four Seasons Resort, on the beach, in Maui?
Service. The wait-staff was perfect. They were accommodating, engaging, and friendly. Exactly what I would expect from Wolfgang Puck's restaurant.
Food. How could you go to a world reknowned chef's restaurant and not partake in the tasting menu? Here was the menu we sampled:
- Spicy Ahi Tuna "Poke" in Sesame-Miso Cones
- "Island Style" Big Island Ahi
- Broiled Miso Marinated Walu
- Kula White Cord Risotto with Sweet Shrimp
- Ginger-Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi-Mahi
- Indian Spiced Crispy Fillet of Moi
- Grilled "Chinois" Style Lamb Chops
- Hana Hawaiian Float
- Chocolate Malted Pot de Creme
Of particular note were the Spicy Ahi Tuna "Poke" in Sesame-Miso Cones. What a fantastic way to eat delicious, raw tuna. Beautifully presented and expertly prepared, I could have eaten this for the entire night. I do wish the Kula White Cord Risotto with Sweet Shrimp had more shrimp in the dish. Also, the Indian Spiced Crispy Fillet of Moi was perfectly spiced and flavorful.
While the $135/person price tag is steep and artificially high due to being at the Four Seasons, our experience at Spago was absolutely amazing.
Have been a few times now and this place is always delicious.
I thought Spago was absolutely phenomenal. The pork chop I ordered was the best I've ever had, and my guests were equally impressed with their meals.
The staff was amazing and the ambiance very enjoyable (outdoor table with ocean view).
To top off a wonderful meal, I had the best mango sorbet ever (I've been dreaming about it almost daily since my return to California).
The next time I'm in Maui, I'm definitely revisiting Spago.
Loved Spago Vegas & Bev Hills
No Love for Maui Spago
In Mel and I glide....glammed in our Wedding Attire...yes, post " I DO 's " on the beach at Sunset -- (OMG how Romantic !!!) into Spago we go for our Wedding Dinner.
We chose Spago since we're staying here at the FS, and we had already eaten at the other 2 restaurants, which were excellent, but weren't "Spago"..... that's what we thought, at the time.
If I had a do - over, I'd pick Mama's Fish House, or the semi - private dining cabana at the Fairmont.
So why the hating on the Maui Spago -- Let me count the ways.
#1. Our dud of a waiter -- no personality, no common sense --
Never offered us any congratulatory ...anything. You would think a glass of champagne would be in order..... OK, every other table was dropping by and having a glass of bubbly with us -- then at least offer desert.....Like I said...DUD
#2. The fish was DRY. So Dry. Arid Dry.
Dud waiter sells us on the "Whole Fish For 2"...tells us how rare it is, and perfect for 2 people who like fish, as it's some whole fish they only get in a few times a year, flash fried in it's skin, served with head and tail.
Flash Fried -- more like PETRI- FRIED.
(Get it -- Ok, bad pun-sorry)
It would have been terrific if they just didn't overcook it, but they did.
We barely ate it, maybe 1/3 -- you would think our waiter would question it-- Nope -- like I said, Dud !!!
By that time we were really drunk, and having a great time with our new friends, so our minds weren't on the food, so all was good, but I don't want you guys to have a Meh Dinner...so my advise is:
Either Don't Order the Fish
OR
Tell them to UnderCook the Fish -- maybe it will come out moist for you.
Oh, and there is no view -- other then the sky and of the FS --if you want view..go to the Italian Restaurant, Ferraro's -- now that's a view --it's right on the beach.
Has live music as well, Very Romantic !!
Ah, the Four Seasons. I don't think I can ever stay at a non-AAA five star hotel ever again. From the moment we opened our car door at the valet to the time we checked into our room, the Four Seasons set the standard by which all luxury resorts should aspire. It is freaking fantastic.
So, it is only fitting that the restaurants at the Four Seasons follow the hotel's high standards.
During our second night at the resort, the guy and I booked Spago for an early dinner, mainly because we wanted to catch the spectacular sunset from Spago's open air deck, and second, we were tired of late night room service.
We had a prime table on the deck, overlooking the hotel's lavash pool area. Our server (wish I could remember his name) was really knowledgeable and pretty funny.
Drinks came in the form of a ginger pineapple mojito for me, and a glass of Torrontes for the guy. Both were perfect way to cap off a hot day laying out at the beach: crisp, light, and refreshing.
I loved how Spago presents their bread basket. They have a server walking around with a basket with an assortment of breads, from sweet onion rolls (my favorite) to sourdough bread to parmesean crisps and olive bread. I love carbs.
For my entree, I ordered the Ahi: it melted in my mouth. This is what a culinary boner must feel like: AMAZING! I think I just drooled a little reliving the ahi experience.
The guy ordered the roasted chicken, which was standard fare, but the mashed potatoes were very memorable. They reminded me of the whipped mashed potatoes my mom used to make for me in the food processor when I was a kid, whipped with a bit of cheese. I actually really enjoyed the simplicity of the dish.
This was my second favorite meal in Maui, only trumped by an amazing banana macadamian nut pancake I had at Marco's. Hey, that pancake is really THAT good!
Oh Spago. Thank you. We had a wonderful experience. The view is amazing and Spago is truly a special place. I recommend that when you make a reservation, you request an outdoor seat with a view. They had about 5 or so tables for two that were just perfect and romantic...overlooking the pool area and ocean from high above the Four Seasons resort.
On to the food...we had been drooling over the Spicy Ahi Tuna in Sesame Miso Cones all week! There were photos in so many of the local dining magazines, we couldn't wait to try them, and they didn't disappoint. Yum.
The bread tray offers tons of tasty goodness too. I highly recommend the Maui Onion Foccacia...I could eat that all day and haven't stopped thinking about it.
For the entrees, my husband had the Mahi-Mahi and I had the Monchong fish...both were excellent and we didn't leave a morsel behind.
For dessert we had the only chocolate option they had, which was like a chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. Also very good, but there were a ton of great and unique options if you don't want the standard chocolate.
We wanted coffee with dessert and they offered a few different options which are presented in mini french presses. However, they're $10. each. Seriously? $10.00 for coffee? We ended up splitting it after inquiring to the size and it ended up being enough for just 2 cups exactly, so I recommend doing that because $10pp for coffee is a little ridiculous!
All in all, I definitely recommend Spago and when we return to Maui we'll be back. For fine dining options on the island, my #1 recommendation is Capische, with Spago a fabulous #2!
A menu with prices (since one isn't to be found online) can be found in the menu case along the beach side path (the one closest to the Grand Wailea) if you want to check it out once you arrive. (The case on the other side of the resort didn't have Spago prices). To give you an idea though, since that is always a major factor: Ahi Tuna Cones ($25 includes 3, although they may offer you 4 cones so it is better to split, which will come to $33.25!) Entrees were in the $45 range, dessert was $14 and wine by the glass from $12 each. And worth it!
You can also make reservations via OpenTable!
Dang, I just read Rita L.'s tip about buy one get one free entrees. Wish I knew that when we ate there last week! Oh well...
Dear Wolfgang,
What have you done? Or maybe what HAVEN'T you done? We ate here a while back and thoroughly enjoyed the fresh pasta -- it was your specialty! But now, all you serve is angel hair. Boo on you.
Sincerely,
Kanoelani C.
P.S. We loved the Kula Sweet Corn Risotto so much that we gave you four stars anyway...
In Maui, there is no contest. For the best high-end restaurant experience, look no further than Spago's. In the last six years, every single trip to Spago's has been consistently awesome. Great views (if you get there early), fun to celebrity watch (this is Schwarzenegger's favorite restaurant in Maui, and we've seen him there twice. Rod Stewart, too (who really needs to tone down those shirts), outstanding Four Seasons-level service, and of course, some of the best food around.
Get an early reservation on the outdoor terrace so you can get a good view of the sunset (530P reservation). Don't miss the ahi cones, and save room for dessert and their plantation coffees. The menu changes frequently, but it's fairly fish focused, go figure. I've had the Whole Big Island Moi Steamed "Hong Kong" style with Chili, Ginger and Baby Choy Sum a couple times now, and really enjoy it. The pan fried whole fish is excellent too when prepared Thai style.
Beautiful and Inventive food at the Four Seasons Maui. Try to get a table on the outside porch, because although the inner room has a nice loungey vibe, there's nothing like the ambiance of sitting outside with a gentle Hawaiian breeze and the view of FS' pool and gardens. I ate here twice during my stay and both times were very good. We had the famous ahi tuna cones (delicious!) a variety of salads and for my entree I tried the Whole Fried Moi which was delicious - flaky and flavorful, and another night I had a fish special. Husband tried the Mahi Mahi and another night the Lobster entree. Service is attentive and friendly, we got great recommendations and delicious wine.
Hello, I'll have 10 orders of the ahi tuna cones please? Well, maybe just 1 order, but I wanted about 10. Yes, the reviews are true..the ahi tuna cones are uhmazing! Based on all the raving reviews I'd heard/read about Spago I figured I"d save the best for our last night in Maui. And while it didn't end up being the best meal we had in Maui (Mama's Fish House gets that prize) it was very good!
Andy, our waiter, was very chatty and helpful. He not only helped us with what to order at Spago, but gave us a few restaurant and activity suggestions for our trip to the Big Island the following day.
I started the meal with a glass of Riesling, which was very sweet (just the way I like it). And then before they brought out those delicious ahi tuna cones the bread lady came out with so many delicious looking breads to choose from! I kind of wished she would just leave the huge tray of breads (enough for everyone in the restaurant) for us, but I chose a few different ones and then helped myself to more Parmesan flat bread (my favorite) her next time around.
As for our entrees the hubby and I split the ahi tuna (can never have too much ahi tuna when in Hawaii) and some fish I can't pronounce or spell, but it tasted similar to a sea bass. Both were awesome!
And as for dessert...we split the banana creme pie. By now we had 6 nights of really delicious dessert and this was among the best. And the "congrats" in chocolate writing on the plate was a nice touch as well.
And while we ate this delicious meal we were lucky enough to be watching the beautiful sunset. And we couldn't think of of a better way to end a perfect week in Maui.
Since we stayed at the Four Season's we wanted to try all of the restaurants on the property, including this one. Plus we had starved ourselves for a year to get ready for the wedding so the honeymoon was all about catching up on good eating.
We started off with a bottle of Shafer, "Relentless" which definitely held up to it's name. The wine was fantastic and set the tone for the meal. We began with the SPICY AHI TUNA "POKE" IN SESAME-MISO CONES - Chili Aioli, Tosa Soy, Green Onions, Pickled Ginger and Tobikko as an appetizer. When they say spicy, they meant it. It was very good but I could only eat one due to the heat radiating out of my mouth.
For dinner, I had the caramelized pork chop with Maui pineapple & papaya which was accompanied by baby bok choy, Big Island vanilla, anise, cinnamon, Thai Basil and molokai yams. I rarely eat a pork chop and this was so good that I have decided to start eating them more! To be honest, I can;t remember what Mark had because i was so focused on my pork chop. However it must have been good as he didn't share any of it ;)
Our waiter whose name has escaped me, was probably one of the best servers we have ever had. He was a retired chef who moved to the islands with his wife who is a pastry chef. He was so knowledgeable about the wine and food that we just listened to him talk and were mesmerized at how passionate he was about food. It was a great experience and the ambiance in the restaurant is very much like being in some trendy lounge in the city. Very dark with low light colors to create a very amber romantic feel. They have a private room for large parties and outdoor seating to capture the sunset. We really enjoyed the experience but we did feel it was a little too pricey for the quality of food. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but worth $350 dollars..... Only on our honeymoon!
They always say better late than never.... so here goes.
My family and I went to Maui about a year ago and decided to go all out one night. We had a very nice terrace end table with spectacular views of the sunset. Took a lot of nice pictures. We had a big group so ordered a large variety of entrees. Some were really good and others were so so. Only thing I remember specifically were the "Spicy `Ahi Tuna "Poke" in Sesame-Miso Cones." WOW! The best I've ever had, and I try ahi tuna everything everywhere I go. That alone deserves 5 stars. I gave it a four because it is ridiculously expensive and my wife just remembers that she didn't like her dish.
Some of the best food we've ever eaten and the service was superb! They bent over backwards to adapt their food for vegetarians. The Maui onion foccacia and tomato salad were killer! Yes it's expensive but worth it and the views are incredible. Make reservations ahead and get an outdoor table with a view.
Sorry yelpers but this place sucks. WAY overpriced, poor food quality. I live in Napa so I expect (and recognize) quality food, but I really didn't have high expectations for this place, I just wanted a reasonably tasty meal.
The poke ahi cones are great. The banana cream pie dessert is good, very cold and fresh. And the $125 steak is good but still waaay overpriced. Good ambience/atmosphere/view.
My mahi mahi didn't even taste like mahi and was WAY overcooked. Everyone else in our party (8 people) said their food was either soso or bad. Total bill for 8 WITHOUT wine: $800. I had a way better meal the next day at Kimo's in Lahaina for $15/person. Skip it - there are better places.
Just about as good as it gets. Great service, great ambiance, and the chef really delivers. The caprese salad, the bread, the ahi tuna cones, all were just a setup for the first rate main dishes. My seafood curry dish was outstanding. I can't remember the last time I went out to dinner and every single dish we ordered was an A....next trip to Maui, Spago is at the top of the list.
Given my experiences at the other two restaurants in the Four Seasons I went in with muted expectations. I had heard of Spago, there is one in Palo Alto that I used to pass by all the time, but strangely I never bothered to stop in. I did know the restaurant (chain?) had something to do with a Wolfgang guy who has no connection to classical music and happily puts his name on crappy frozen pizzas. Not a great start.
Yet my Spago experience was a total shock to my system.
The cuisine and service really wowed me. I started with a tasty sculpture built of ahi tartar and sashimi (fairness qualifier: tuna quality was consistently great throughout Maui). Our server provided real wasabe freshly grated before my eyes which was a pleasant touch. Next I had a spicy seafood curry, which was fiery but still delicate. The sauce was better than crack. The wine list also came through, we chose the only Sancerre offered on the menu (quite reasonably priced at $65) and it was fabulouso. Thank God I managed to save some room for dessert, because the light-as-a-cloud banana souffl was as tasty as chocolate stuffed with chocolate. Yes, that good.
Of the restaurants I tried on Maui, Spago was the supreme standout, highly recommended.
Wolfgang Puck is by far one of the most overrated chef's to open an establishment on Maui. Spago is pretentious, the service is lacking, and the food lacks creativity, inspiriation, and (at least when we went) execution. My fish was cold, my okinawa sweet potatoes cold and overcooked, and my wifes had scales (not the skin, just scales in the food). You'd be far better off leaving the Four Seasons and dining at Joe's up the street (Bev Gannon's place), Roys (in Kihei), or at Ma La (Marriott). The management is quick to respond to and remedy issues but the dinner should never be defined by how well a place fixes their mistakes.
My Old Job - so maybe I am a little biases. The room is beautiful. How I miss getting to gaze out at the sunset everyday at work. The flash cocktail with the muddled raspberry is so yummy and possibly the best steak on the island.
A little hidden secret, they have Kamaaina night every night. 2 for 1 entree with 2 valid HI Driver licenses. So now your honey has no excuse not to bring you.
Romance was in the air! The outdoor seating offered postcard sunset views and the ambiance and service were par excellence. I wish I could say the same about the food. It was very good, but in that range I expect more originality and excitement from the menu. Fortunate for me, my company was divine.
sloppy and unoriginal. if your form LA of SF - don't bother.
Mid-way through dinner I asked my husband: " Imagine if we found a place that made the same effort for every course that we do when we host a dinner party?" That's what I felt like here. Excellent, every step of the way, from the bartender, hostess, backwaiter, server, to the food, view, and ambiance.
Apps: Ahi cones (sesame, spicy, creamy) and lettuce cups (warm crunchy fish, cool crispy lettuce) -
Bread: maui onion foccacia and calamata bread
Dinner: seared scallops with baby bok choy and asparagus, and red curry with shrimp, fish, and a little crack.
I haven't had food this good while dining out since I was in New Orleans. Seriously.
Unfortunately, unlike heroin, the first time was NOT free- it was $125/person (includes 4 drinks and dessert) - but I'm still going back tonight!!
Pretty good. It would have been 3 stars but the quality of food, and the service from my water, were great.
The hostess are those snooty girls who think they're special for having the door. They'll judge anyone who doesn't look a certain way. They reminded of LA girls, actually ... Basically if you're not white, and dressed in resort wear, they may give you pointed looks or be particularly disinterested in talking to you/dealing with you (even if you have a reservation).
So then I got seated on the balcony - because I asked. It was an off/on sprinkly shower day. Evening was falling. Rather than seating me in toward the restaurant, she sat me at the edge.
I commented 2x to my waiter re: the rain and need to move and he earnestly said they'd take care of me if anything happened, but during the meal there were at least 2-3 strong gusts, all of which would have have warranted moving me.
I guess this was partly mine and their fault so I'm letting it slide but I found it all kind of weird. By the time it was obvious maybe they should move people in the inner areas were filled.
Anyway so the food! Good wine, strong cocktails, agree the bread is very good. I had a fish dish of some sort, was trying to eat healthy - it wasn't amazing, but it was good.
I had the trio of chocolate, which was very good.
Pricing is of course a lot. I think the Wolfgang Puck name really lost it's lustre once it hit 2000, ie, he hit his zenith in the 90s.
The other thing is when you have a chain you'll of course pay more attention to some restaurants than others and for whatever reason Puck apparently keeps an eye on this one, probably because it's so visible, high end, etc., and maybe he lives in Maui or has a house or vacations there a lot or something ...
Anyhoo, definitely eat here at least once if you're staying in the resort or nearby in Wailea. Otherwise ... I don't think it's really worth a trek to if you're up by Kahului or Paia, etc.
Spago at the Four Seasons resort, a.Wolfgang Puck restaurant is not to be missed. The food was wonderful, the service impeccable, the geometric, concrete, urban-island decor was unique...and the location (overlooking the ocean) was spectacular.
Our group had three different entrees and we all loved what we ordered. SUGGESTION: Do not forgo the flatbread offered tableside throughout the meal, and at least taste the olive bread.
This is a beautiful place to eat with a staff intent on making it a wonderful evening. The service is so consistent throughout the meal, that your water glass is never empty. I chose a locally caught steamed fish on a bed of vegetables with Jasmine rice. Everything was fresh, my veggies were perfectly cooked and the light sauce had a great kick. I passed on the dessert, but two people with me swooned over their chocolate souffle!
Yes, the price tag fit the elegance and reservations are necessary, but this was an outstanding experience! Spago is everything a fine restaurant should be--flawless.
Went here last night for Easter Dinner and it was the perfect choice.... After relaxing poolside all day and then coming to Spago made the perfect Easter besides the fact that my boyfriend and I broke up the night before.. lol... We got seated at a very nice outside table with a perfect view.. Started the night off with a Cucumber Martini and it was delicious!! Then I had a slice of the Maui Onion Focaccia it was very tasty.... For my Appetizer I had the Hawaiian Mahi Mahi Seafood Risotto it was very good I loved the flavors and my date had the Walu and he pretty much liked his plate clean... For dinner I had the Grilled Lamb Chops cooked medium rare and it melted in my mouth like butter It is probably in my top 10 best dishes I have ordered the Chili-Mint Vinaigrette was to die for... My date had the pan-roasted organic free range chicken ya boring I know but it actually was very good the skin was nice and crispy.... The service was amazing and every little detail was perfect its exactly what I would expect from Spago I think our waiters name was Jed or Jeb and he was a great friendly knowledgeable waiter for nice experience... Oh I almost forgot Dessert!! We had a trio of Sorbet very good and I forgot the name its some crazy Russian name or something its basically a Banana Souffle it was DELICIOUS!!!!!!! A perfect Easter Dinner!!!!!
I have had many meals here over the years, and I just had a FABULOUS meal here the other night, and it's not just because Wolfgang was there and shook hands with us (as well as everyone else at the restaurant). We arrived about an hour and a half early for our 9pm reservation, and told the hostess we'd be enjoying cocktails in the bar and to seat us whenever a table opened up. We were able to get a table at about 8pm. Not bad at all. My favorite cocktail here is the Wo Fat, which is like a mojito, except it's made with Bacardi O. So good! Other drinks are delicious too, and all are quite strong.
Once at our table, our waiter, Danny, quickly came over to introduce himself. Throughout the meal he was great, both when it came to service and for conversation. We really enjoyed having him as our waiter and I would certainly try to get seated in his section again!
I know lots of people watch their carb intake, but don't turn down the bread when they come to your table. My favorites are the olive bread and the Maui onion foccacia, but the sourdough and those little crisp things are delicious as well. I also love how they serve sweet butter but put a little bit of Hawaiian salt on the top. Yum!
For appetizers, my recommendations would be: Ahi Cones, Sweet & Sour Lettuce Wraps, or the Kula Tomatoes with three different cheeses. Currently the Lettuce Cups are off the menu because they are doing a special truffle thing, but I was told they will return once truffle season is over. I sure hope they do, they're delicious!
For entrees, Danny told us that the Red Curry was probably the best curry he'd ever had. One of my friend ordered it, and we all tasted it, and we agreed - the best red curry ever! I usually stick with the Onaga that comes with Lobster Truffled Mashed Potatoes, but on this night I think the Red Curry and my other friend's Monchong won out.
When it comes to dessert, there is only one thing on the menu for me, and that's the Warm Chocolate Cake. It's melted in the middle, and though they serve it with Kona Coffee ice cream I always ask for vanilla instead. They used to have a Pineapple Upside Down Cake that my dad was in love with, but it seems to have been replaced by a Mango Upside Down Cake.
Spago is certainly an expensive meal (apps are about $20 and entrees approach $50) but I try to go once when I'm on the island, as it is a great special occasion/celebration/vacation restaurant.
Very underwhelming. For all it's reputation and exorbitant prices, you should be able to produce better quality food. The service was good but the plates were nothing to write home about. Perhaps you should try Duo or Ferraro's instead.
This was the most romantic - and most expensive - meal my wife and I enjoyed on Maui last week. In fact, it was the only meal in which we did not include our kids, but we decided Spago would be the best place to have a meal to ourselves, and we were not disappointed.
The food, service and decor / ambiance were all outstanding. Spago has a number of tables for two setup along the edge of the patio dining area, each of which is arranged so that the couple can sit enjoy the food and the view(s) side-by-side. We arrived just before opening and were seated at what was probably the choicest twosome table - closest to the ocean. I posted photos of views from the table (and other photos of food and wine we ordered).
Based on other reviewers' recommendations (e.g., Lindsay Z. and Charles M.), we tried the Ahi Cones and Sweet & Sour Lettuce Wraps - both were delicious! We'd been eating a lot of seafood all week, and had plans to eat at Mama's Fish House the following night, so we decided to try some non-seafood entrees. The beef tenderloin and Chinois-style lamb were [also] both excellent.
The wine list is extensive ... and expensive (I estimate markup of between 300% and 400%). We ordered the Two Hands 2004 Shiraz / Cabernet blend, "The Bull and the Bear", which went well with all of the items we ate, and was probably a bit below the median price for wines (at $113 / bottle).
This was the most expensive meal we had on the island (and there were only two of us), but given that it was our only night to ourselves during this visit to Maui - our first visit, almost 20 years ago, was during our honeymoon - it was worth the splurge.
Had the lettuce cups and their Thai red curry (both containing the fish of the day: onaga[?]) and it was yuuuummmmyyyy. I've been on Maui for a week now and everyday I've been having my meals with steamed jasmine rice. I just can't get enough of that fluffy, white, steaming jasmine rice and it was just absolutely scrumptious with the curry. It was "broke da mouth, brah"!
I enjoyed last night's dinner so much that I booked another dinner reservation for tomorrow night.
AMAZING!
I don't usually start off my reviews with only one word but Spago is just that special. From start to finish, all of my meals here have been worth writing home about. The atmosphere is wonderful, the view is breath taking, the service is more than friendly and knowledgeable.
But here is the secret to Spago:
GET THE AHI TUNA CONES
I'm going to say this again in case you didn't catch it the first time:
!*!*!*!*!*GET THE AHI TUNA CONES*!*!*!*!*!
Even though the entire dinner of every dinner I have eaten here has been mind blowing, I can never remember what I got for the main course because those Ahi Tuna Cones are soooo damn good!
I have yet to find a negative aspect of Spago and I have yet to take a trip to Maui (I've been well over 15 times) where I do not eat at Spago.
I would recommend this place to anyone with enough money to enjoy Spago's amazing cuisine, service, and atmosphere.
Compared to the dining experience at Spago in Vegas, this one was certainly more memorable, mainly due to the awesome location. The restaurant is situated on the second floor of the Four Seasons Resort with a wonderful view of the ocean. It's a great place for a romantic dinner.
Service is attentive, though somewhat lacking in experience. Food is tasty, but a bit on the pricey side. Wine list was pretty decent.
if you're kamaaina its best to come here! why? here's why, buy one entree get one entree free!!!!
the onaga, the lamb, and the curry is sooo good!!! when the bread boy comes around, get the onion foccacia!
very expensive, but with the special for us locals, its soo worth it!!!

Heck yah do I love this place! Oh yeah!!!! The ambiance and service was great! We sat outside and I… Read more »
I would give it 4 stars if:
1. I didn't get a stare down by the hostess for not dressing up.
2. The pole didn't block my view of the ocean.
3. The food was cheaper.
My fav restaurant. We ate here almost every night on our honeymoon. The tasting menu is the best! They change it up so don't worry about getting bored. Come with an appetite because it's a lot of courses and everything is so delicous that you just can't stop eating!
The ocean views are beautiful. You'll also probably see some celebs, we saw the governator (arnold schwarzanegger) and his family and also britney spears on our last visit.
This place was, not surprisingly, a rip off. However, the ambiance that a Four Seasons provides is second to none. You instantly feel rich when you step into this place.
I was somewhat shocked at how many toddlers were here with their parents. If you're staying at the Four Seasons/Fairmont/Grand Wailea, you can afford a sitter/nanny. I don't know when it became appropriate for children to experience Spago's under the age of 13. I also don't know when it became inappropriate for parents to reprimand their child in public- I mean, stuffing another cookie in little Johnny's mouth isn't going to make him shut up in the long run.
Food was delicious, but pretty over priced for what you get. The ahi cones were a hit with us. Highly recommend you just get those with a couple glasses of champagne and sit on the lanai for the sunset. Then, high tail it out of there and get some real food elsewhere.
My girlfriend and I came here for our 1 yr anniversary. Dining here was a wonderful experience. We ordered the tuna for appetizer. That was the first time I had real wasabi. They shave it from the actual root. Way better tasting than the paste. I ordered the lamb, ummm, love the lamb. Flavor was perfect, a nice sear on the outside and pink in the center. Expect to drop a pretty penny here. Eat slow and enjoy the view.
Went here on our 1 year wedding anniversary. Sat outside on the veranda. The views were amazing. I had a Thai curry fish dish that was orgasmic. I really enjoyed the setting and the service.
