Well, was glad to find out that Spago's, as long as it's been around, is still serving very good food. Met some friends here, and we spotted Pat Sajak and some young chick (who was definitely not his daughter) at his side. That was probably the best part of dining at Spago--trying to figure out who the young thing was with him.

Extremely $$$ for what you get. The good thing is, friends paid! W00t! I shoulda ordered more. Haha.

Sorry, but no. And I didn't even have expectations for the place! How sad...

My appetizer was a pumpkin soup with a fruit compote and creme fraiche. The soup itself was ok, but I didn't really like it with the fruit compote. Too sweet. Ever had that butternut squash soup in a box from TJ's? Add some apples and raisins to that bitch and there you go.

Since there were no vegetarian main courses, the chef prepared a special vegetable dish for me. It was essentially a plate of four vegetable side dishes: Chinese green beans, stir-fried Asian vegetables, cauliflower in cauliflower puree, and lentils in eggplant puree. Boringgggg! While none of them were particularly offensive, it's rather unfortunate that the green beans at a C-rated Chinese restaurant taste better than the ones here.

The dessert also failed me--a caramelized apple pastry with apple sorbet. Again, very boring. The sorbet was good, but I didn't even finish the rest of the dessert.

I'm glad I tried Spago for DineLA because I would've have wanted to pay full price for that meal. Then again, I didn't even think that meal was worth the DineLA price. Not even the service could save this review since our waitress was kind of cunty.

And finally, the decor inside is hideous. HIDEOUS. And dated. I mean, what the fuck is with the trout paintings on the wall? And the glass panels with swirly sperm-looking things on the ceiling... my god. So wrong.

Classy service.  We made our waiter crack up as he was removing crumbs in between courses.

I think I like this place for restaurant week, but unless there is a special occasion my money goes to Napa Valley Grille in Westwood over Spago.

Probably just as likely to see celebrities in either location if that's your cup of tea.

Used to go from time to time, haven't been in a while. Of course the food is great. The pizzas are spectacular. I got ticked the last time because my lady friend and I had reservations and were waiting at the bar, and some celeb came in and got seated right away. Pissed me off.
However...the lamb sausage pizza was the best damn pizza I've ever had in my entire life.

The food is consistently good, great varieties.  The bread basket and butter is among the best in town.  The fish however are not cooked as well as Water Grill or Providence, imho.

My girlfriend and I were beyond excited to try out Spago's $28 dineLA lunch prix fixe menu. We made reservations and were seated immediately upon arrival in a huge, comfy booth with a fun view of the kitchen. The bread guy came by several times, she particularly liked the walnut bread and I enjoyed the olive bread.

The dineLA lunch options are:

Appetizers
Choice 1: Roasted Pear and Burrata Salad - with Prosciutto, Old Balsamic and Micro Arugula Salad
Choice 2: Heirloom Tomato Soup - with fresh ricotta crouton
Choice 3: Apple and Endive Salad - with shaved fennel, Medjool dates and Maytag blue cheese

Entrees
Choice 1: Pan-Roasted Casco Bay Cod - with puree and ragout of gigante and cranberry beans, pancetta, wild mushrooms and mascarpone emulsion
Choice 2: Tagliatelle Pasta with Crispy Chesapeake Bay Softshell Crab - dried tomatoes and wild arugula
Choice 3: Wood Oven Roasted Poussin - with caramelized garlic, preserved lemon and roasted fingerling potatoes

Desserts
Choice 1: Apple Cider Upside Down Cake - with Candied Ginger Gelato
Choice 2: Triple Chocolate Zebra Torte - with Cocoa Nib Cream
Choice 3: Praline and Coffee Crunch Souffle - with Nutella Gelato

I decided on the Heirloom Tomato Soup, Wood Oven Roasted Poussin and Apple Cider Upside Down Cake. My girlfriend selected the Roasted Pear and Burrata Salad with Prosciutto, Tagliatelle Pasta with Crispy Chesapeake Bay Softshell Crab and Praline and Coffee Crunch Souffle with Nutella Gelato.

Heirloom Tomato Soup - Too tangy for my taste. It was thick and a little clumpy. The fresh ricotta crouton it came with was delicious, I wish I had several more of those to enjoy with the soup. I didn't finish this dish and would have rather have had a bowl of Trader Joe's roasted red pepper and tomato soup. Sorry, Spago. 2/5

Roasted Pear and Burrata Salad with Prosciutto - The bite that my girlfriend gave me was delicious! The pear was perfectly roasted and bursted with flavor, I wish I'd ordered this instead. 4/5

Wood Oven Roasted Poussin - It was, essentially, a dry and overcooked fried chicken. So disappointing, especially reading other reviews about how good the chicken is here! There was one sliver of caramelized garlic on my plate. The poussin was was presented the least impressively of all the dishes we ordered and the roasted fingerling potatoes were just average. 2/5

Tagliatelle Pasta with Crispy Chesapeake Bay Softshell Crab  - My girlfriend's dish was very good but on the spicy side. She had to stop eating it after a few bites because she got "the sweats" and I was happy to help her finish it. The pasta was light, crab crunchy and chewy, and very flavorful especially compared with my chicken. 3/5

Apple Cider Upside Down Cake - A crunchy, cinnamon-y, sugary and apple-laden cake nicely presented and not overly sweet. I enjoyed it but I wish I'd ordered the Triple Chocolate Zebra Torte instead. I saw someone else order it and it looked great! The grass is always greener... 3/5

Praline and Coffee Crunch Souffle with Nutella Gelato - My girlfriend thoroughly enjoyed her dessert. I tried a bite of it and it was a little too bitter for me, the nutella gelato was sweet and refreshing though. 2/5

The service was nice if a bit overbearing, we were approached by at least three different people throughout our meal and asked how things were going at least twice with each course we were served. During our 3-hour meal, we were interrupted 6+ times in addition to bread and water offerings. Calm down and let me relax and enjoy my food, please!

It appears Spago skimped out on both portions and quality for their dineLA menu. It was a disappointing first-time experience and based on the unimpressiveness of the food, I probably won't be back. Shame.

Loved this place!

I came here during their dineLA restaurant week.  I was ecstatic when I saw Spago on the list of participating restaurant for dineLA.  Spago?  Hell yeah!  Sign me up!

This is the dinner menu off dineLA's website:

Appetizers

Crispy Monterey Bay Calamari - with pickled ginger vinaigrette and marinated cucumbers
Heirloom Tomato Soup - with ricotta flan and confit cherry tomatoes and fiore sardo
Jamón Serrano - with salad of grilled peaches, spiced almonds and upland cress

Entrees

Wood Oven Roasted Poussin - with caramelized garlic, preserved lemon and roasted fingerling potatoes
Pan-Roasted Casco Bay Cod - with puree and ragout of gigante and cranberry beans, pancetta, wild mushrooms and mascarpone emulsion
Kurabuta Pork Chop - with pear-ginger compote, stir fried green beans and confit pork, Chinese 10 spice and port-licorice reduction

Desserts

Apple Cider Upside Down Cake - with Candied Ginger Gelato
Triple Chocolate Zebra Torte - with Cocoa Nib Cream
Praline and Coffee Crunch Souffle - with Nutella Gelato

Supplemental Dinner Items (additional price on top of the dineLA menu price)

Appetizer: Sweet Corn Agnolotti - with Mascarpone and Reggiano $14

Entree : Grilled Prime New York Steak - with whole grain mustard sauce and buttered haricot vert $35

Cheese plate: $5

They did not have the Jamón Serrano, but they have a proscuitto with pear as a substitute instead.  It was yummy.  For entree, I had the Kurobuta pork chop.  The portion was generous, and I was able to take the rest of this home as I was not able to finish it.  The pork chop was as yummy the next day after I put it in the oven for a few minute to be heated up.  As for dessert, I had the strawberry shortcake which was actually not on this menu.  It was TO DIE FOR.  I also shared the cheese plate with my friend, and it was respectable for $5.

Wine pairing was an additional $25, and corkage fee $30 should you care to bring in your own wine.

Overall, I highly recommend this place.  It's easy to see how Wolfgang got so famous after he opened this restaurant.  None of his other restaurant, not even CUT, compares to this.  You save a lot of money if you try Spago during the dineLA restaurant week.  You will normally get a four course meal for $88, but it comes with a much wider selection.  I look forward to coming here again soon, with or without this promotion.

Oldy but a goody.  Great dinner!  Excellent food!  Atmosphere could be better but the food made up for it.

My wife and I recently went to Spago on a Saturday night for our wedding anniversary.  I've been there a couple times before, but not with my wife.  Part of the reason we went was because we had a $200 gift certificate that someone gave us.  How can you beat that?

We had a 6:30pm reservation.  We were seated near the kitchen towards the wall.  In retrospect, it would have been nice to have requested one of the tables in the center "outdoor" atrium area as it wasn't too cold of an evening, and the ambience there seemed more romantic with the twinkle lights and all.

I was a little surprised to see a few families who were eating there with their children, of all ages.  I don't think of Spago as "family dining," but maybe some people do.  It could also be because of our early reservation time.  It reminded me of going to Lawry's, another establishment where I've seen plenty of children dining but hadn't expected to.

We ordered the 5 course tasting menu.  I think that's a great deal, I think $95/each.  You could easily exceed that if you ordered an appetizer, entree and dessert separately.  We also shared a wine pairing since neither of us drink heavily (another $45 or so), and it was more than enough.

The food was fantastic and plentiful.  I always prefer the tasting menus because I feel you have the opportunity to try a bunch of different things.  For our last 2 anniversaries, we also had the tasting menus at Hatfield's and Providence.  You can't lose with those places either for a special occasion.  I will note that Spago automatically included a 20% gratuity on the tasting menus.  I didn't care as that was what I was going to tip anyway.

The service was great, although it was hard to figure out who our waiter was (or even if we had just one) with all the people serving us.  We didn't feel rushed.  In fact, the time flew by and it was quickly a 2 1/2 hr dinner.

One negative is that the Spago decor admittedly could use some updating.  Some of the art reminded me of the 80s.

(DISCLAIMER: They are lucky I didn't rate this a frustrating 3.5! See what I mean below.)

Man, how conflicting were the emotions I had for this review.

I'll be blunt, and say it out loud now before I get into one of my standard long-winded reviews:

For MY experience, at THAT given night, under OUR waiter...

The food was EXCELLENT (5 rating)

The service was TERRIBLE (2 rating)

Let me elaborate.

To give them some credit, it was very busy the night we went. Also, DineLA was going on as well that week...so yea, I get it -- most LA restaurants were stressing.

At any FINE dining establishment -- this is NOT an excuse, especially for the money you are putting down.

Can we Yelpers at least agree on this?

Thank you.

So, first off, we had a reservation, and still had to wait (not the problem).

The MAIN problem was however, my gf saw another couple come in after us with NO reservation get seated within 2-3 mins...? While we were still waiting at least another 15-20 mins. to be seated. Still, not a huge deal, but definitely noted in our memory banks.

Anyways, we eventually get seated after a drink at the bar.

We noticed we got seated right next to another young couple, who had also just apparently been seated a few mins. before us, perhaps in their late 20's to early 30's, just like us. Now, in a surprising switch of service...

My gf and i were both handed our menus and water BEFORE the couple (who was clearly seated before us) did...? WTF right?

This was, clearly a bit uncomfortable, since we noticed the young couple glance at our service and kind of stare at each other themselves noting what had just happened, obvious that we were seated well after them.

Meanwhile, a seemingly LONG 2-3 mins later, their waiter finally came by with their menus / water.

Also...

We were served our complimentary bread before they even were! THEN I felt bad, I even acknowledged to the couple with a glance like "yea, the service is a bit spotty isn't it?" to which they politely gave the standard acknowledgment nod of "don't feel bad, not your fault."

Anyways,

My gf and I were already annoyed with our waiter, who when presenting the menu and specials was CLEARLY busy. Meaning, he was doin the move that waiters do where they're not even LOOKING at you when explaining the specials....that whole 'pan-and-scan' of the room where he's clearly distracted by the rest of the restaurant, like "it's soooo busy that my gestures have to clearly reflect that to you people, I have no time for questions, order your fuckin food already."

Now again...this complaint is for the waiter we HAPPENED to have. Thing was, this was also an older gentleman. Usually these guys have been serving people for a long time and have a lot of experience in this dept., generally being able to 'read' their guests. You would think this guy would have a bit more people skills and overall customer service skills -- c'mon, this IS "Spagos," right??

He was very very short with us, telling us ONLY what we needed to know and nothing more.

Here's another kicker, to let you people know I'm not crazy. There was a table directly behind me that was in the view of my gf the entire time. A party of about 4-5 was seated at that table. My gf couldn't help but see everything that was going on at that table, since they were clearly in her plane of view.

First off, she saw them be seated by our shitty waiter.

For more than 15 mins while WE had sat down, there was NO MENUS or anything being brought out to them, and they were CLEARLY being agitated according to my gf.

After she saw them looking around, wondering wtf was going on with ANY sort of acknowledgment, she saw the supposed main person of the party shake their head, stand up, and tell everyone to leave.

Can you believe that?

And like, FIVE mins later, our bumbling waiter comes out, walks to the table, and cleans it up like it was nothing, as if he was just going through the motions of another finished party leaving, no big deal at all.

So all this culminated up to the point where my gf and I joked on how the food BETTER be the saving grace of this restaurant, because so far, the service was worse than Denny's.

Long story short,

I ordered the American Wagyu, while my gf ordered the Duck.

Both were AMAZING, period. As much as we wanted to HATE on the restaurant after this terrible service, we coudln't.

My gf's duck was the best I had ever eaten, and my wagyu came in 2nd as the best piece of meat I had ever consumed (coming in 2nd only to Providence's wagyu steak -- which was phenomenal. Btw, if you want immaculate service, the complete opposite of Spago's -- Providence is the only way to go).

Even the appetizers before hand were surprisingly very good.

Again, my main complaint and major disappointment was the service here, NOT the food.

I even remember reading someone else's review reflecting my main complaint:

Excellent food, sub par service.

It truly is a shame, I know Wolfgang would want to hear this.

Didn't know Spago was a two star Michelin restaurant but anyway they offer really great food at a good value, especially for lunch.

$28 lunch set menu I had the mushroom ravolini tasted really earthly and great.  It was a decent sized portion, not the tiny little portions you get served at the LONDON.

For the main, I ordered the Pork Chop that many other reviewers already posted about.  The pork really has a great deep pig flavor.  I enjoyed the swine taste and it was worked nicely with the pear compote.  The pork was also cooked just past medium so it really retained it's juice and tenderness.

Dessert was a Chocolate Purse: it was just okay, too much chocolate actually..ugh overload.

The menu is different from the one posted online.  I believe they change it every other day or to whatever they have in that day or left over from the previous night hhahah.  Definitely come check out Spago for lunch, dinner is $44 and the menu looks pretty similar.  It's rare to get to eat at 2 star mich restaurant for $28.

Edit: for DineLA

I am absolute furious with the level of service of this restaurant.  I had a 7:30 reservation here, which I confirmed the day before, for may parents anniversary and these guys ruined everything.

We arrived at 7:20 and let them know we where there.  They just kept telling us they didn't have a table and by the time the finally did seat us it was 9:12 (I looked at my watch).  Then as we tried to order all the best dishes were already out and what we did order was terrible.

This was parents 25th anniversary and I just cant imagine a worse experience.  It didn't go any better the last time I ate a Wolfe gang puck restaurant either so this just sealed for me.  Don't bother with this place unless you like being treated horribly.

Spago, normally, would be wayy out of my budget but yay for DineLA. Came here for dinner on Thursday. Let me tell you something else before I start on the review: Spago's portions are BIG. You would think that they'll skimp for DineLA but nope, really big portions.

Atmosphere
Very nice, cozy atmosphere with soft lights and an open kitchen. Perfect for a nice romantic dinner. Fantastic patio.

Service
Our server was very attentive and his recommendations were spot on.

Food
Appetizers
Crispy Calamari - Meh. Calamari could be crispier.
Tomato Soup - Due to the reviews on Yelp, nobody in our group ordered this.
The third appetizer is not the one that was listed on the DineLA website but it was long flat pasta with rabbit meat - Love the al dente pasta. Perfectly firm and the rabbit meat was a good complement.

Entree
Poussin - I think it was okay but my friend who ate it commented that it tasted like KFC.
Pork Chop - This was what I ate and it was definitely the best of the bunch. The pork chop complements the sour pear-ginger compote and the slightly acidic green beans well. Lovely combination.
Cod - I can't say I remembered anything about the bite that I ate from my friend other than it was pretty good.

Dessert
Upside Down Cake - I love the fruit but the texture of the cake wasn't exactly my favorite thing.
Zebra Torte - Oh yum! Really nice dark chocolate with cream.
The third dessert I'm pretty sure was *not* a souffle but a kind of layer cake - I tasted coffee, hazelnut praline and I simply love the nutella ice cream. Still, I didn't finish it. I think the zebra torte was actually better.

Overall experience: I love the place but the food was not as good as a two-Michelin star restaurant ought to be. Still, with the prices the way it is, I'll probably not go there again unless someone else is paying.

Now that I got your attention, just kidding.  Spago is incredible.  The food melts in you mouth.  The quality is amazing.  I would recommend it to anyone.  Our server was super helpful and friednly.  Not as cheap as McDonalds, but it doesn't even compare.

I came here for dinner for their dineLA special.  Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with the experience.  Skip to the bottom for the Cliff's Notes of my review.

I went with an old friend and we had a lot of catching up to do.  Perhaps this wasn't the best venue for that, but the service loses a point for not being able to take cues and slow down the food prep to accommodate our slower eating pace.  I could care less if that happened at a casual dining restaurant, but this is fine dining, so they get graded as such.  I do give the service points for trying to be minimally intrusive, besides interrupting our conversation to take away our unfinished first course and immediately bring our second.

The bread they offered and brought around was delicious, though I only tried the walnut bread, olive bread and flat bread.  The walnut and olive breads had a crust with a complex crispness--airy layers of crispness.  The flat bread offered very deep flavors.

Heirloom Tomato Soup: in the words of my friend, it tasted like Campbell's tomato soup.  The soup is served with a ricotta cheese flan; this was the highlight of the dish for me.  Also served were some peeled baby tomatoes and micro basil.  Overall, it was pretty good, though I didn't finish the soup.  I just couldn't get over how much it tasted like Campbell's.

Halibut: The dineLA website says they serve cod.  Perhaps they ran out?  My halibut came with the garnishes for the cod on that menu though.  The fish was fairly well cooked and the mushrooms and beans brought an excellent addition of flavor to the dish.  The fish was pan seared and had a browned side, but lacked any sort of crispiness.  This is the dish that I feel the service may have messed up by allowing the kitchen to start preparing it too early.  I was eating my appetizer and talking with my friend for at least 20 minutes before this, so I suspect the fish may have been cooked and sitting out for too long.  Perhaps this wouldn't be an issue if you were here for a normal-paced meal.  Then again, maybe the pan sear just isn't crispy to begin with, in which case I'd find the dish lacking some texture.

Apple Cider Upside Down Cake:  This was the perfect way to end the night.  The cake was heated prior to serving, giving it a crispy exterior and a warm, soft and spongy interior.  The sliced apples on top were naturally sweet and ripe;  I'm sure they were baked with sugar, but it was done in a way that tasted natural.

We were seated indoors along a wall, about arms-reach from a table on both sides.  It felt a little awkward at times since the diners at our adjacent tables would look over at us or our food periodically.  That aside, the interior had a great mood lighting and the decor set a good tone for a relaxed meal.  I think sitting in the outdoor atrium would've been a 5 star experience.

Cliff's notes:

Service: 4 stars
Food: 4.5 stars
Decor: 4.5 stars

Would I come back?  For DineLA, definitely.  For regular service?  Perhaps when I got a promotion or when I'm making over 6 figures.  I found neither good value nor a unique dining experience.  I think their prices are justified mostly by the location and the chef's big name, which doesn't cut it for me.

This is the place to treat yourself and savor every bite.  Give yourself an incredible dining experience.  Yes, it is expensive but you leave it remembering every bite you had and wishing it was your B-day again or your anniversary or  whatever special occasion you go out to a nice restaurant!
I had the gnocchi with lamb ragu sauce, apple blue cheese salad and calamari with Asian salad.  All delicious!!  And the breads!  You must try all 4: olive, sourdough, walnut and flat bread.

Like one reviewer mentioned, if money is not an issue this is the place to go!

Five Yelp Stars, easy.

And two Michelin stars. How can you possibly beat that?

You cant.

Spago never disappoints, and that's saying something in LA.

And where else can you, an undiscovered star-mogul-mover-shaker,  sit quietly and gawk at your fellow stars and moguls and movers and shakers? Its a target rich environment, thats for sure.

Often the man himself, Wolfgang Puck, works the room...that too is a treat.  He must be the friendliest celebrity chef known to man. Kings and commoners alike receive his beaming smile and his attentions.

The room and the patio are lovely. Tables are completely comfortable and properly spaced. OK if you get stuck in Siberia its not a 100 point moment...but unless you are a regular you wont even know its Siberia. Honest.

But you yelpers arent here for the stargazing, or the ambiance
...no...you are foodies and you want to hear about my view of the food. HA! Sure you do. Well even if you dont, here goes!

The goulash is superb-where else can you get goulash-and the spatzle is perfect. Beet salad with chevre. What else would anyone ever eat I ask you? I could eat these two things here happily every single day. Happily.

Service is fast when you need fast, unobtrusive when you dont. Its like a nice private club with good food. Another rarity I assure you.

If CUT is the KC Prom Queen turned LA Hooker, Spago is the woman of a certain age, in Chanel, equally comfortable with vintages, Braudel and hallmarks, who wears no diamonds in the daytime because that would be vulgar.

Spago. Five Stars.

I've been wanting to go to Spago forever so we made reservation to eat here in advance since we were going to be in LA.

Excitedly we arrived on a Friday night and had our car valet parked since there was no parking spot available. Oh I can't believe this is another one of those restaurants that's famous but doesn't quite deliver!! 3 stars for the high price but average food and very rushed service.

Since it was my treat, we decided to go with the 5 course tasting menu. As soon as we ordered and they took the menus from our hands, the food started arriving. Wasn't it good you asked?  No, not when they kept coming back to back and I couldn't get to take my time and enjoy my food.

The waiter asked me to pickup another amuse bouche when I am eating one with my other hand, and have another one on the plate already. Give me a break will you?

We got wine pairing too and for some reason we were having a hard time hearing the descriptions for each plate and the wines.  Yes it was very crowded and noisy too, but the servers were all kinda in a hurry to get in and out.

A couple came and sat next to our table around 8pm and wanted to do the 5 course tasting menu too but were told they had ran out of the tasting menu.  The manager came and apologized to them, and advise that it was a very busy night.

Well yes busy indeed, all I felt was that they were just rushing to serve their customers so quickly to turn the tables around! All I can say about my whole experience is that for over $350 a meal, I really expected much better tasting food and better service.

To eat and drink all that in an hour was pushing it Mr Puck. Maybe if you let your customers sit back and relax a bit, they might get to enjoy the food and the beautiful patio setting in the evening.

Michelin Stars #14 and 15

From the simple fact that Wolfgang Puck is a household name to the many so-so reviews of Spago, we were not expecting much at all. But after the 8 amuse bouches, 7 savory dishes, 1 cheese course, and 3 desserts (no partridges in pear trees sadly), I became an avid Spago believer.

We were seated in a booth right up against a 15' window to the kitchen. For us, this was the best seat in the house. Who cares about spotting a B-Lister on the patio when you can see real action in the kitchen! After sitting and joking about seeing old Wolfy, guess who we see in the kitchen? Mr. Puck in the flesh! He was back there for a good 30 minutes, talking to all the cooks and tasting everything on his way. For some reason, knowing he was there doing QC on our food, elevated my mood and expectations. Now, on to the food!

1st Amuse Bouche: An ahi tuna roll. It was simple, delicious and bursting with flavor. The hardened sesame shell was light and crisp and played quite nicely with the tuna, veggies, and bonito flakes.
http://www.yelp.com/bi...

2nd Amuse Bouche: Hamachi ceviche. The single bite of hamachi was so nice with the taste of the citrus juice, the sweetness of the tomatoes, and the bitterness of the shiso leaves. Even though I hate anything with shiso flavor, this did not bother me.
http://www.yelp.com/bi...

3rd Amuse Bouche: Cranberry bean hummus. Until that day, I never knew of the "cranberry bean." (http://en.wikipedia.or...) Whatever it was, it was mashed and whipped into the lightest and creamiest hummus I've ever had. The flavors were so soft and gentile, providing a great mouth feel.
http://www.yelp.com/bi...

4th Amuse Bouche: Smoked salmon blini. Up until now, everything was only great; it now became fan-frigging-tastic! Aside from Gary Danko, this was the finest blini ever! The blini was soft and warm, the salmon was cool and tender, the red onions were crisp and tart, and the salmon roe provided the nicest pop with each chew. I could have eaten a few dozen of these easy.
http://www.yelp.com/bi...

5th Amuse Bouche: Heirloom tomato bruschetta. Simple crisp bread + the freshest tomatoes = a mighty fine one bite treat.
http://www.yelp.com/bi...

6th Amuse Bouche: Duck liver mousse on a fig tart. This was my favorite of the amuse bouches. The mousse was amazingly light and airy; it instantly enveloped my mouth with such a creamy liver flavor without being heavy at all. The mini fig tart provided the stark contrast needed to make this a perfectly well rounded bite.
http://www.yelp.com/bi...

7th Amuse Bouche: Duck liver pastrami. Not sure why they called this "pastrami" but I loved it regardless. The texture of the duck reminded me of slightly firm tendon you'd find in pho, but better. The thin crisps that sandwiched the meat was salty and a good companion.
http://www.yelp.com/bi...

8th Amuse Bouche: Confit bacon en crut: This was a nice finish to the start of our meal. Super tender pork wrapped in even more tender and flaky pastry. Not salty or heavy at all.
http://www.yelp.com/bi...

1st Course: Heirloom tomato sorbet. Wow, just wow! I don't know how they got so much tomato flavor into that sorbet, or how they were able to dust it with the perfect amount of salt to make it work, but wow! This was one of the first savory dessert style dishes I've ever enjoyed.
http://www.yelp.com/bi...

2nd Course: Heirloom tomato salad with Harley Farms goat cheese, nicoise olive tapenade, basil pesto aioli and micro basil. The giant slice of tomato came precut, which ended all questions I had of, "how the hell am I going to eat this?!" I can still remember the superb tomato flavor and texture. I could have eaten a dinner salad of just that.

This is obviously a Los Angeles classic, but I really miss the original location by Tower Records on Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood.
This location can get noisy and it is fairly pricey. I guess, you pay for the name and "the experience" as well.

We had a perfectly nice meal at Spago.  We ordered the 5 course tasting menu, one with the wine pairing.  Right away the amuse bouches started coming, fast and furious.  In order they were:

- Tuna tartar cone
- Ceviche
- Giant bean humus
- Tomato bruschetta
- Bacon stuffed gougere (or something like that)

All of that was followed by a savory tomato sorbet with tomato water and basil oil.  All of these were great.  I especially liked the bruschetta and gougere.  But when I say they came fast and furious, I'm not kidding.  Before we were even done with the tuna cone the ceviche arrived.  Just when we finished the cone, the humus arrived, and we hadn't even started the ceviche.

We still hadn't started the five courses but then they came at a rapid fire pace as well:

- Tomato salad with micro greens and Harley Farms goat cheese
- Skate with maitake mushrooms
- Sweet corn agnolotti
- Lamb chops with blood sausage, chestnut puree, figs, and chanterelle jus
- Dessert thing with raspberry, sorbet, and nuts

They really wanted us to get out of there it seemed because everything came so fast.  As soon as we were done with one dish out came another.  All of the portions were really small, but I didn't need or want a lot after all of the amuses.

The meal finally slowed down when it came time for coffee.  I would give them 4 stars if they didn't rush the whole event so much.  Everything tasted good and I think that the meal was worth every penny.  The tomato salad was excellent.  The skate seemed like it was prepared way ahead of time and left sitting around so I wasn't wild about that.  The angolotti was the essence of corn.  The lamb was good but cold and raw at the bone.  Some of the wine pairings were a little on the budget side, or tasted that way anyhow.

Spago is a big restaurant.  Maybe it has grown to keep up with demand for its fame.  It seems that it has become like a little factory churning out meals and shuffling people through as fast as they can.  Factory foreman Wolfgang Puck showed up at about 9:30.

We had a Spago in the Bay Area for several years and it was a much more relaxed affair. Maybe that's why it's not here any more...

Finally dined here after considering it for some time...

Went with my bf and a friend and each of us ordered two courses and dessert. Each of us sampled each other's dishes as well.

First courses:
Seafood risotto: perfectly cooked rice, rich and flavorful.

Sweet corn agnolotti: best dish of the night: elegant twist on a homey sweet corn/butter sort of flavor concept. Wonderful.

Celeriac, green apple, lobster and chantrelle soup: worst dish of the night...unfortunately mine. Flavors were clean and discernible, but I don't think they were working perfectly together. I wanted more tartness from the apple. Just OK.

Main courses:

Halibut with sweet corn etc: good. Nicely cooked halibut, elegant and fresh flavors. Light. Nice symmetrical presentation.

Veal chop: good. generous, tasty. No complaints. Nice roasted garlic crust.

Duck breast (not the Asian inspired one): for what it was, it was delicious, generously presented, perfectly cooked, perfectly crisp on the skin. Nice celeriac puree with maitakes, and stewed fruit accented with nutmeg. Not terribly innovative, but much of Wolfie's stuff is not that very innovative IMHO anyways.

All enjoyed with one of the best French Pinots I have ever had. Good work on the Sommelier's part.

Dessert:

Chocolate and rasperry souffle: casued my friend to have a food-gasm. Nicely done. Paired perfectly with their dessert moscato.

Almond upside-down cake: pronounced almond flavor. Too big, but tasty and rich.

Millefuille: light and fresh...yet so rich. Very nice.

Service was alright. Not as great as I would expect from a 2** Michelin rated restaurant. I waited longer than I would have liked for my plate to be cleared (and I finish everything, and place my flatware in the classic parallel "i'm finished" fashion that most dim-witted bus boys don't seem to get. Our main server was sweet, accommodating, and warmly jovial, but the bus boys lacked personality or interest. I do not find the latter acceptable for restaurants of this caliber.

Noise level was loud...as expected. This is why I did not order the white truffle dish. To do so would have been like trying to enjoy a Domaine de la Romanee-Conti while jogging--in that atmosphere.

But I do like Wolfie's style...as he focuses on good ingredients, clear pronounced flavors, plated generously, and without too much preciousness---something other big chefs should be more inspired by. Who cares how pretty the dish is---this is a restaurant. If food is not good tasting, but is visually stunning; it is only art, not food. We go to art galleries for that sort of fare.

I would not be opposed to going back. If I were to do so, it would be on a very quiet night (if they exist), and in the solarium.

Spago's is generally out of my league budget-wise, but I was able to finally dine here for lunch during dineLA for a mere $26 pp!  What a deal!  We were seated outside, which was great bc it was  nice day and was quieter than the inside.  The place was hopping for lunch!  I loved the bread. A breadman (at least, that's what I call him) came around often with a tray of different bread to choose from.  I liked the flat, crunchy pieces (tasted like cheese crackers) the best; next was the sourdough.  I ate way too much and could hardly touch my main course.  We ordered from the 3-course prix fixe menu, which they altered slightly from the first week:

-Heirloom Tomato Soup - I generally don't like tomato soup, but this was thick, sweet and delicious!  The waiter poured it from a teapot into a heated bowl, so the soup stayed warm throughout.
-Proscuitto and Burrata Mozzarella - Very good - the burratta was creamy and smooth. It also came with yummy roasted pears, which went well with everything.
-Wood Oven Roasted Poussin - The plate was also warm.  Chicken was tender and came with a nice crispy skin.  However, it was nothing fantastic.
-Pan Roasted Alaskan Halibut - The halibut was super white and flaky.  Though it was a thick piece, it was cooked well so it wasn't dry.
-Apple Caramel Upside Down Cake - This didn't come with vanilla bean ice cream, but a sort of champagne-tasting sorbet instead.  The outside was crisp, and the whole thing was not heavy at all.
-Chocolate Purse - I have no idea how they made this, but it was basically a bunch of chocolate in a thin wafer purse-shaped cookie (see pic).  It was really way too much dark chocolate, but was good for the first few bites before becoming too overwhelming.  It came with a little scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.

The third dessert option was titled "cookies," which I had no interest in ordering until I saw another table get it.  In face, I heard a woman at another table change her dessert to the cookie tray, too, once she saw it.  The cookies came out on a tray and looked like nothing that ever came out of my oven!  I wonder how they tasted....

I have to say that I wasn't blown away by the food, but I did notice the attention to detail that you don't get at a lot of other restaurants.  Our server didn't wait on us excessively - in fact, I felt slightly ignored (probably bc we were only ordering the prix fixe menu while the table next to us was ordering a $200+ lunch), but overall I cannot complain about the service.

I wasn't too hungry when I ate here so that probably hurts by review at bit. I ate there for luch and had a burger and fries. It was quote good but the best part of my meal was seeing Bill Clinton there. This is the place for power lunches and it doesn't get better than this. of course he introduced himself to the pretty young ladies clamoring for his attention. Wait, back to the food. The ambiance is great adn the food is excellent. I would like to go back for dinner to I can up my rating

If EVER anyone says to me (this basically NEVER happens), "Let's go to an amazing restaurant.  Money is no object.  My treat."  Spago, it is.

It's not even that it's that much more expensive than other nice restaurants - it's just that you just HAVE to get multiple courses, wines, desserts, tea service, the whole shebang.  You just HAVE to.

Sitting out in the courtyard late at night after the dinner-crowd has died down - sipping your tea while recovering from a mild food coma... It really doesn't get a whole lot better than that.

Dear Jonathan Gold:  This place is the epitome of "Essential" for Los Angeles.  If the "essentials" were ranked, I would hope this one would be listed as #1.  And actually, this one could be labeled "Essential" for the rest of time, even after it's existence.

Tonight was my second time at Spago, and it was an even better one! I got to meet Wolfgang himself! It was pretty awesome. He was at the host desk up front and I recognized him immediately. I said, "Hello Chef" and he turned, smiled and greeted me warmly. That was a sign that this was gonna be a great evening. He even came by our table a little later to chit chat, recommend a few dishes and take a picture with our group of 7. Our waiter was really cool too, it was just a great evening with friends.

What we ate:
Tuna Tar Tar Cone-our waiter told us this was off the menu and it was excellent
Hand-made Sweet White Corn & Mascarpone Agnolotti-the sweetness of the corn was like a party in my mouth
Sauteed Maryland Crab Cake-absolutely the best crab cakes ever
Summer White Truffles dish, sorry but I forgot the whole name-AMAZING!!! a must try if you are willing to fork out $110 for this starter
Risotto-good, but typical
Endive salad-refreshing
Lamb Shanks:-very good
Cantonese Style Roasted Duck-just average, but the Lo Mein that came with it had really good flavors
Cote De Boeuf-sooo tender! the cheese creamed potato was very good too.

We didn't have dessert, cuz we were stuffed like a Thanksgiving Turkey. Not to mention, our bill was almost 1K! =P

This is really a great restaurant, and it offers a great experience. The food is wonderful, I've been there 3 or 4 times, and the food is always fresh and flavorful.

They do a wonderful job of making every bite taste good. Many of their dishes are surprisingly full of flavor, but simple. Their presentation the food and the service is always wonderful.

Their desserts are amazing! You have to save room for them! =)

Spago really lived up to it's reputation for me.  My filet was cooked to perfection and the ambiance was tasteful in an "old school LA" sort of way.  It was also a nice surprise when Wolfgang Puck came out to our table to ask us how our meal was.  I will definitely go back when the budget permits.

My husband and I celebrated our 10-year boyfriend-girlfriend anniversary on Halloween with a memorable dinner at Spago Beverly Hills. They took really good care of us and gave us the best table in the whole place. (We got the middle of the three booths that overlook the kitchen.)  Cynthia was our server; she was personable and was dressed like a vampire. Being that it was Halloween, the entire staff was dressed up -- there was a Teletubby, a cardinal, a pirate, a fairy, Mr. Incredible, a pregnant (male) nun ... there was even a killer clown.

For starters, we shared an order of white truffles with pumpkin agnolotti. We had never had truffles before but decided it was an occasion for splurging ($110 for this one dish alone!). At first bite, we finally understood what all the fuss was about.  They were earthy and subtle, and we couldn't help surmising what it must be like to eat the whole mushroom all at once!

For the main course, I had veal "wienerschnitzel," which I was told was prepared the traditional Austrian style. It was pounded real thin; it was breaded but wasn't heavy or greasy -- it was just right. My husband had the short ribs -- best short ribs he and I had ever had: tender and fatty with tons of flavor.

(One thing to note: the Spago menu changes daily -- that's right, daily -- but Cynthia said the short rib appears on the menu regularly and the veal is a fairly regular dish in the fall and winter.)

For dessert, I had a Valrhona chocolate mousse bombe with creme brulee in the center, and my husband had a 12-layer chocolate cake. The desserts were pretty good but not the best we've ever had. The presentation was creative; since it was Halloween, all the desserts were themed to the occasion: mine was a bat and my husband's was a grave complete with tombstone.

The food was great all around -- down to the artisanal breads to get you started. They had walnut, olive, lavash, french, white, and wheat. The walnut and lavash were my favorites.

To drink, my husband had a Pinot Noir from Napa Valley (the only Pinot they serve by the glass) and I asked the bartender Lauren to make me some kind of fruity cocktail so she made me a "Tacua" drop, which is sort of like a lemon drop cocktail but instead of vodka, she used "Tacua," a vanilla-and-orange liqueur.

The service was excellent but the food was even better. I highly recommend celebrating your next special occasion at Spago. It's spendy (all told -- including tax and tip -- we spent just under $400) but so worth it.  In my opinion, it deserves the two Michelin stars it got for 2009. We will definitely be back.

I would first like to point out that I am extremely sad they no longer serve the Tortilla Soup. It was SO good. But you know, these high profile places have to keep up with the times, what's hot right now? Heirlooms. Ok, fine.

One thing that I really enjoyed from this experience is the Fresh Ricotta Gniocchi. They serve it with a lamb ragu sauce and the ricotta and sauce mix in so well together with the soft texture of the gniocchi. I really liked it and wish I didn't share it with my family. Actually it was better than my main course. I have learned that halibut, although my favorite fish when cooked well, is generally not cooked well at restaurants. This was served with chorizo and clams and it was such a bad mixture of flavor. Chorizo is so potent; I couldn't imagine it going well with any fish. And the chewiness of clams is kind of the opposite texture you are looking for with halibut. Bad form Wolfgang. I still think you should go here because I have had much better experiences here for lunch with my special tortilla soup. My family was also much happier with their food than I was of my own.

On a last note, I would love to check out their 10 course tasting menu just because I have never seen anything above 7! 10!!!

Went to dinner at Spago last night and was quite excited  because I've always heard good things about Wolf Gang Puck's cooking.

I ordered the pan seared chicken with chanterelle mushroom with mashed garlic potatos for my main course. for my main i had the endive salad and for desert kaisher schmere!

Every bite was heavenly.

Valet parking is available as well as street parking. I suggest that when you go to make reservations although they accept walk ins as well. Their bar was ample with drinks and cocktails.

The staff was very friendly and accomodating especially to my little cousin Mark. So parents who are worried about taking a toddler along - do not fret! They will provide you with a high chair and even entertain your little one. When Marks mom had to walk him around for a little bit the server offered to take her dish into the kitchen to keep it warm. I've never been to restaurant that offered this kind of service with smiles all around. I was quite impressed.

Do not be afraid to doggie bag as well.

The cherry to this sundae was we met Wolf Gang Puck! Like a good host he made his rounds around the dining room and shaked hands with every guest. I was so star struck that I failed to whip out my camera!

It is a bit pricey but is worth it. This would be a place to go to for a special occasion and of course for the excellent food and service.

Would I ever go back? ABSOLUTELY!

Came here recently for dineLA Restaurant Week, and had a fantastic time.  The food is out of this world.  You can see the prix fixe menu in a bunch of the reviews, so I won't rehash, but I had the tomato soup, the cod and the upside down cake.  Everything was amazing, but the cod especially stood out; it was easily the best I've ever had.  We sat out on the patio, which was beautiful.  Service was sharp and attentive, except for our server, who was also a total sweetheart to us on top of all that.  There's valet, but we easily found a spot on a parallel street and walked a little.  I like Beverly Hills at night anyway, because it's so empty after all the shops are closed.  Just a terrific dinner.

I don't remember what I ordered when I went here a couple years ago but I just remember it being good. Plus the interior of the place is just beautiful, with the tree in the middle with the lanterns all over it.

My only disappointment was the dessert. This is where I found out that I'm not a very big fan of souffles.

OMG, this is the restaurant business at its highest level!
Wolfie is most certainly the leader of the pack.
When you're led to your table in this flagship restaurant in Wolfgang Puck's empire you are immediatly reminded that he is aware of and pays attention to every detail.
The tables are set immaculately and if you're wearing dark clothes your white napkin is changed out for a black one.
The bread basket is a two story assortment of fresh baked olive, walnut and sourdough bread.... Yum
If you get up to use the restroom a staff member escorts you and when you get back to your table you have a brand new place setting.
Wolfgang was there and worked through the lunch rush alternating from running the kitchen and shmoozing in the dining room.
He is a real working Chef and has remained loyal to his old school work ethic as evidenced by his aura of constant enertia.
Needless to say the food was fabulous.
Roasted Beet and Goat Cheese w/ Sherry Vinaigrette - Divine
Wolfgang's signature Smoked Salmon, Caviar, Creme Fraiche Pizza was a delight
Lobster Cobb Salad - A triumph
When I told Wolfgang I was a Chef and I build restaurants, he hung out with us and comped us Cappuccinos and Desserts. Cool!

Mmm, mmmm, mmmmm! I went here about a month ago while in the area and (sorry guys!) don't remember everything I had here but I do remember the fabulous Wagyu beef!

The interior is nicely done, very colorful albeit dated.  The service is excellent at this establishment, and I can't really picture it being any other way with Wolfgang at the helm.

Ok now, on to the beef! The glorious beef! I've never had Wagyu beef.  What say you? Wagyu! This was the most delectable morsel of meat I have ever had...and believe me you, I've had many a yummy piece a meat.  (Get your head out of the gutter!) For 8 oz of beef at $150, you had better believe I had high expectations! And I wasn't disappointed.  I ordered it medium rare and it came out and the clouds parted and the angels were strummin on their harp and all that jazz but not really.  It was almost like that.  It was pre-sliced for me and as I looked down at the marbleized meat I almost drooled.  It was a beautiful moment that the meat and I shared.  Right before I cut into it.

Have you seen that epic part of When Harry Met Sally and Meg Ryan's character fakes an orgasm at the table?  Well, I had one of those moments, right there at Spago, in my Louboutins and classy outfit.  IT WAS THAT GOOD.  The meat literally melted in my mouth. MELTED, people.  Each bite was an experience unto itself.  I couldn't ask for more.  Seriously, it was so good, I don't even remember any of the appetizers or sides or desserts that I know I had.

I really can't say more than go.  Just go.  And get the beef.  You won't be disappointed.  And if you are, you can find me in Corona del Mar and I will personally refund you your moola.  Or maybe b-slap you for being a Yelp stalker.

I looked up from my "Thai" chicken salad at lunch today to shake the hand extended towards me by Wolfgang Puck, grinning from ear to ear.

Although my dining companion asked thrice for a glass of skim milk and some toast, he probably didn't need to ask three different people at twenty second intervals.  The maitre'd and all of the staff were quite attentive to my party.

My walnut bread and salad were not particularly remarkable, but they were inexpensive and I immensely enjoyed the refreshment of an endless supply of iced teas.

This is a nice place for a business lunch in Beverly Hills, or to experience the indoor/outdoor California ambiance if you are visiting.

Food is truly amazing. Not one bite was bad. And I was dining for my birthday and the chefs and my waiter kindly brought a slice of cake for me and wished me a happy one. It was very VERY nice of them. But when you my friends and family tried to call to buy my dinner or buy me a bottle of champagne, they refused to do that. How hard would that be, Spago? C'mon.
Despite that downer, they were still excellent in taste, service, quality, and atmosphere.

My first michelin restaurant in LA! so excited.

First, the bread, they had olive, some crunchy thing, and sour dough? the olive was good, interesting and i liked the crunchy thing, my friend liked the sour dough a lot.

we had two appetisers, the half a dozen oysters which was very fresh, the seaweed salad was good too. then we had the mascarpone and sweet corn agnolotti. the portion was tiny but it was divine. very distinctive corn taste.

i ordered the seared chicken with chanterelle mushroom with mashed garlic potatos, i am not normally a fan of white meat, but this was cooked to perfection, incredibly tender for white meat, and a large portion too. the skin was crispy. however, i needed a little bit of variety. the mashed potato was cooked really well too, didn't have a strong flavour though.

my friend got the alaskan halibut and it was surrounded with clams. the fish was cooked perfectly. but it did lack a little flavour, the sauce was a little sweet for my taste.

for desert i got the mulligan. it was really good, but nothing spectacular. the portion was just right, i was stuffed so sharing was good. lots of little strawberries. mmm

service was superb. when we were seated, we requested for a table in the patio, but it was full. the employees had such good communication, there were multiple waiters, etc who we never spoke to, who would look out for us, and we finally got moved to the booth in between the patio and the room, then later on, they asked us if we wanted to be moved to the patio. it was simply amazing, i felt like they all knew about us (uh the annoying customers who want to sit in the patio?) but regardless, they all, like 5+ of them, tried their best to find us the seat! but we were very happy with the booth which got the best of both worlds.
they were just so incredibly attentive!

tip: sit patio, request patio!

favourite: their service is so good! all their food is top notch.

do not want: the chicken was too big of a piece, it's a great thing that it's such a big portion, but i was just kind of sick of it halfway through and had to switch to the halibut! so i wish there were more sides, mashed potatoes do not really help.

last words: not too pricey for a michelin restaurant, if you're going to lawry's or something of similar cost, might as well come here (unless you're really feeling like prime rib)

No complaints on the food, but no real compliments either.
I had very high expectations with the good reviews, Michelin stars, and the high prices... but was not "wowed" at all, and came home very disappointed.

Food: 2-3 stars
The food seems to be an Asian-influenced Californian cuisine. The menu is not that extensive, and includes Asian items such as sashimi with yuzu-soy sauce, Hong-Kong style fish, Cantonese duck, as well as crab cakes, grilled steaks, and roasted chicken.

I ordered tuna cone appetizer (part of the tasting menu), and the duck with mushrooms and figs.
My wife ordered the mushroom ravioli and cod (part of the Dine LA menu).
The tuna cones were ok - the tuna was finely chopped with spicy mayonnaise, with a cone of sesame-soy. The kind of thing you get at a fusion Asian place - you can't really taste the tuna, because the sauce is a bit too strong. But I wanted seafood for an appetizer, and this was the recommendation.
My duck was a bit over-cooked, and the mushroom sauce was nothing to rave about. It was ok, but for $40, I was expecting an innovative and spectacular duck dish, which I didn't get.
My wife's mushroom ravioli was very oily and heavy - a bit much for an appetizer. The grilled mushrooms that accompanied the dish were very good.
The cod was ok - it was grilled with a frenchy-foam sauce. The taste and presentation was of a typical "fine-dining", something we have seen and eaten before, and no "wow" factor.
The wine selection is VERY extensive (and expensive). They have really good wines by the glass as well.
So over all the food was disappointing, and did not meet my very high expectations.

Service: 4-5 stars
Very smart and attentive service.
They have so many people working the tables and in the kitchen!

Decor: 3-4 stars
We sat inside the outdoor courtyard, and it was very cozy. The garden and trees are very nice. Makes you forget you are in the middle of a city.
Don't really understand the BGM, tough. It was 80s-90s rock music, so we had Tom Petty, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers etc - This is supposed to be a sophisticated, and even romantic restaurant, no? Maybe some jazz??

So overall, was disappointed. For $100 a person, I expect a very memorable dining experience, and what I got was very average.
Not worth the money...

The food was excellent...so why only two stars? The service! My husband and I went there together for our first (and probably last) meal there to celebrate my birthday. When we arrived the restaurant was practically empty except for a table of what we assumed were "VIP's", since practically every server was hovering around them the entire evening. Meanwhile at our table, we waited over 15 minutes for water & bread. In fact, as we saw other diners get seated after us receive water & bread we had to ask our server what the deal was. She said that they usually wait to serve you those things until you've ordered. Seriously, EVERY table was served before ours even though  some of them were still holding menus. On top of that, the table we were seated at was extremely wobbly and the server didn't bother to move us or fix it after we pointed it out to her. As our evening wrapped up my husband mentioned we would grab dessert elsewhere since it was my birthday but in a last ditch effort to make us happy enough to leave a decent tip our server brought over what she said was "cake" in a to-go box. Opening the box later reveiled that it wasn't cake but what looked like an assortment of cookies. But I guess I shouldn't complain since they were free. Still, after dropping $200+ on a meal at a Michellin rated restaurant only to be treated so poorly left a very sour taste in my mouth.
