I'm giving 4 stars because I love the atmosphere. Totally un-pretentious, cozy, and has a great little kids area - a place where one can stay for hours and feel as if they are in the comfort of their own home.
I sincerely hope that someday they switch to Stumptown or RIstretto or some other amazing bean. Also, owner if you're listening, even more important is: PLEASE offer gluten free goods! Lots of us would be eternally grateful!! -

Oh how I miss the last Owner/ Manager! He was so kind, and quick to remember your name. He always offered friendly conversation and a smile.............. Of the 2 new owners however, 1 of them was completely unpleasant (borderline downright rude), while the other was fine.
The coffee is 'just fine', but I get much better service from one of the giants like Starbucks, so I've sworn off of Space Monkey. It's a shame since I live 2 blocks away. -

Briefs: If you'd rather be at a Starbucks, then the coffeehouse in question just failed. Space Monkey Coffee feels like a grungy and depressing coffeehouse when compared to Arleta next door. If this is the closest coffeehouse within a 3 block radius of your location, then it's alright. If you're traveling from a further distance, then skip. [Original Visit: December 19, 2010]

1. The coffee is tasty, and organic.
2. The art is cool.
3. The owner ROCKS!
4. They have lots of locally-made jewelery on display.
5. They have free wi-fi and a desktop computer that you can use.
It's hard to get me to stray from my local Stumptown cafe, but this place is just as cool (and a little less pretentious).
All 'n all a sweet place to grab a cup 'a jo and chillax for a couple of hours. -

How I long to love this place. I tried it a handful of times when I first moved into the neighborhood...each time hoping my previous experience wasn't as bad as I had thought. Sadly, I finally gave up hope.
There's always a hard balance to strike between supporting local business and enabling establishments that should be forced to improve to simply keep skating by with a mediocre offering. Space Monkey happens to be one of only two coffee shops in the Mt. Scott-Arleta neighborhood. This, however, should not be an excuse for producing sub-par lattes. Portland is, after all, a hotbed for superb coffee.
The owner is a wonderful guy. He will chat you up and he seems to remember every one who comes through his front door. These are talents many baristas lack. I just wish the coffee beans were quality and the shots pulled weren't bitter. -

Want to chat about all things dorky with a nice guy who pulls a mean shot?
Then go to Space Monkey.
Want to hide while your kid is taking lessons at Mt. Scott, so as to avoid awkward and forced conversations with the other parents?
March on over to Space Monkey.
Their house coffee is french pressed and the beans they use are super dark roasted, and a tad bitter but I like my coffee to punch me in the gut.
Black Sheep baked goods are not my thing, so I save my pastry eating for other places but Space Monkey is a great place to hide for an hour, talk about historical novels, sci fi or music and have a really decent cup of coffee. -

God help me, I miss the previous owner. He may have been oblivious to social cues that indicated you were in a hurry or not interested in chatting, but that was preferable to the new operator.

I am making this review with a disclaimer. I love this coffee shop... I hate the coffee. I think it is terrible. If I liked it, I would be in everyday. There have been discussions at dinners on our street how sad we are over this coffee vs. lovely shop-ness.
I am sorry. I love the owner, I think he is one of the nicest guys I have met. He remembers us even though we don't stop in often. He is always ready with really interesting conversation.
There are lots of things for sale that are handmade in the area. Which is awesome. I love that you can buy things made in the neighborhood.
I want to like this coffee shop. No, I want to love it, live in it, spend sunny mornings reading in the window nook. So if you love tea give this a try. Or it seems from reviews that there are people who like the coffee, so perhaps it just isn't for everyone. -

Being a fan of the Fight Club, i nearly lost my sh*t when I was strolling down 72nd Avenue and walked past a sign that read SPACE MONKEY. Space monkies! And coffee! Brought sanctimoniously together at long last!
But it's not only the name that tugs on my heart strings.
It's the welcoming, relaxed atmosphere.
The comfy chairs strewn throughout.
The availability of the most current Mercury and Willamette Week.
The organic coffee.
The free Wi-Fi and house computer.
The local art.
The goofy postcards and locally made jewelry.
The affordable prices.
The always-tempting baked goods and wraps.
And Tim, the barista, who you'll almost always find zoning out on his laptop, but always willing to slip it under the counter to engage in some stimulating conversation.
Oh yeah. And the random monkey paraphernalia... Space monkies!Listed in: I Heart Foster-Powell, Crack Kills

What a hidden gem. I rarely come this way, but when I do and I need a caffeine fix you can bet your sweet bippy that I'll be here. The owner (or at least I think he's the own because I've only seen him there) is rad. Very down to earth, goes the extra customer service mile and he sports some awesome band T shirts.
They serve organic coffee and flavors which makes me intestine happy! You'll also find cool art and jewelry from local artists here.
The best thing about this place is the acoustic guitar tucked away in the corner for random rockage. They understand and embrace the need to rock out when your inner rock god comes a knock'n!
So come here, grab a coffee and rock out. Good times for all! -

Just getting out of breakfast at Arleta Library Bakery Cafe next door I wanted an iced coffee and my fiancée wanted an iced mocha to go. We figured the easiest thing was to just go next door. It took the barista two times to make the mocha even drinkable, the first time was overly sweet so we asked him to remake it. The second one was less sweet but still wasn't a good mocha. As for the iced Americano is was alright but the coffee wasn't all that great. I think if Space Monkey used Stumptown coffee it would help out a lot. If you live around here then I guess this might be your best bet for coffee in the immediate area but I'm not a very big fan. On the plus side, there are a lot of fun handmade goods you can browse while waiting for your coffee and a little kids play area as well.

My local friendly neighborhood coffee shop. Great coffee and good conversation with the owner! I only wish the kid's play area was a little more spacious, but hey, there's a park across the street.

Great people, nice music playing in the background, and it's right across the street from Mt. Scott Park. Perfect for grabbing a coffee and then doing some jungle gymming with the kiddos.

Space Monkey Coffee. I want to love this place for a lot of different reasons. It's 2 and a half blocks from my house, free wifi... So- the truth. Bad coffee. Equitas? Yuck. I went there this morning and had an Americano. The barista clearly did not know what she was doing, smelled like alcohol, and gave me half and half for my coffee that had chunks in it. I am a barista so maybe I have higher standards. She clearly did not want to be there. Upon looking over the counter the place was disgustingly filthy. Holes in the linoleum, coffee grounds on stuck all over the walls. I work in food service. I can tell the place has not been cleaned in a long time. The first shot she pulled was about 50 seconds. Wow. Not good. I mentioned this to her and she said she was planning on pulling me another one. Uh huh. Probably not if I hadn't mentioned it. The drip coffee was out, as usual. It's really too bad. The Arleta Library Cafe is right next door. If the owner got some baristas that knew how to do latte art and pull a shot he would make a lot more money. Sad. Oh yah and get better coffee and make sure it doesn't run out all the time. Sorry Space Monkey Coffee. Maybe the owner will read this post and make some changes.
