My husband and I had our first Spa Sydell experience on Thursday, and will definitely be going back.

We had a couples' massage, and we both really enjoyed ourselves.  As suggested on the website, we arrived quite early (about 50 minutes before our scheduled massages) in order to ensure that we had plenty of time to check in and use the steam room.  Our check-in process went pretty smoothly and everyone was nice to us.  The first girl who helped us seemed on top of things.  However, when we finished filling out our forms, there was a second girl who seemed rather confused and ditzy.  She was perfectly nice, though.  I guess everyone can't be smart.

My only real complaint about the experience was that, like Kristin B. said, when we got upstairs there was no one in the lobby to tell us what to do.  However, we looked down the hall and a staff member came over and helped us out.  It wasn't a big deal, but it seems like they could have signage or something to let people know where to go to get their robes and flip-flops.  But maybe the ditzy girl was supposed to have told us that when she sent us upstairs?

Anyway, a nice female staff member grabbed us some robes and flip-flops, explained where the bathrooms were and how to find the more quiet waiting room away from the elevators.  We each had a quick steam (this was my first steam room experience and I enjoyed it pretty well) and then went off to the back waiting room to wait for our masseuses.

The actual massage experience was very nice.  We have both only had one other professional massage experience (which was at Chateau Elan last year).  I hesitate to compare the two experiences overall, since Spa Sydell is a "day spa" and Chateau Elan has more of a "resort" feel to it.  However, if I had to compare the two masseuses, I would say that the person at Chateau Elan was slightly more adept at actual massage technique (or at least at finding what worked well for me with very little direction).  However, Robert at Spa Sydell gave a great massage and did a MUCH better job of being soothing and comforting during the process than my last masseuse did.

My husband was also very happy with his experience.  Just a note: the couples' massage is done in two adjoining rooms with a door that opens between them.  You are not actually in the same room.  I don't know that it matters, but it surprised me so I wanted to pass it on.

After our massages, we decided to do another steam.  I wish I could bottle the feeling that I had when I came OUT of the steam room.  I was so relaxed!  I grabbed a quick shower and ran into Sydell (the owner) on my way out.  She was apparently just checking on the place, and she was very cordial.  It makes me happy to know that she (and her husband, who was also there) care enough to come around and check on things and also see how the customers enjoy their time there.

I definitely plan to come back here.  It's not the same experience as Chateau Elan, but if you only have an hour or two, it's a nice way to get a piece of the resort feeling.

I think there are so many better places to get a massage in Atlanta. I went because I had a gift certificate, so it was essentially free to me, but I was still not that impressed. I had a massage and a facial and the massage was ok, I kept asking for more pressure and she said oh no thats not good for you...um I have massages 10 times harder, and love it/feel great the next day. So that was just blah.

Then the facial girl talked the ENTIRE time. She complained about how sydell treats their workers and pay the lowest in the industry, I was like ok why not work somewhere else. In any event I did not come here to listen to you bitch about your job. I mean, I would hate it, true, I hated waiting tables in college, but I didnt tell the people I was serving, hey I hate serving you guys.

I dont think I would go back, even if it were free again, just not good, not worth the time.

I've returned to spa sydell. i like their no-frills kinda service. you book a massage, you walk in, and w/i minutes you're in a private, tranquil room (earthy music and all) ready for a relaxing hour. I opted for the deep tissue massage over the swedish this time, and i'm glad i did b/c i had some shoulder pains this week. i recommend the swedish if you just want an overall light massage, but if there are specific areas you want to work on, i highly recommend the deep tissue. My masseuse was val, she was great. I always appreciate their super-clean locker room and showers too...it's just an overall tranquil place to be. a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

I have been a Spa Sydell customer since high school.  However, based on my last experience, I don't think they will be getting my business any longer.

First, when I called to make an appointment, the appointment scheduler was not just curt, but was actually just flat out rude.  I wasn't aware that the location I had been to most frequently in the past (Perimeter West) had closed, and she basically made me feel incredibly stupid and incompetent for not knowing that that location was no longer operating.  When I asked for an appointment in the morning on a Saturday, she impatiently demanded "what TIME?" I replied that anytime before noon would work well, and I would take whatever they had available.  She sighed rudely and again demanded "what TIME?"  and I finally said 10am would be fine.  I would have asked to speak with her supervisor to complain about the service, but she hung up on me as soon as the appointment was set.

I arrived early for my appointment, and when I arrived, the reception staff was all standing in a clump chatting amongst themselves when I walked in.  I was not greeted, and had to stand awkwardly until I was finally acknowledged when their gossip session was over.  They checked me in, and told me to go "upstairs" to wait.  Ummmm...upstairs?  She noticed my confused face, pointed, and told me the stairs and elevator were around the corner.

Well, upstairs there were two small loveseats, each one already occupied by a spa patron.  They both stared me as they clutched their glasses of lemon water, which I saw in a pitcher by the entryway.  No staff member was there to offer it; this was obviously a help yourself situation.  So, I stood around for a few minutes, and finally my overly chipper technician arrived.

She introduced herself, and we proceeded to the treatment room.  All I was getting was an eyebrow wax, which I've had many, many times before.  Yet the technician "baby" talked the whole way through:  "this will hurt juuussst a leeeeeeeettle."  No, really?  And when it was over, "Now that wasn't so bad was it?"  The wax itself was okay, nothing special, but the wax or some of the products they used made me break out around my eyebrows, not a good look.

Spa Sydell always has a nice ambiance, with warm relaxing colors and a slightly modern design, but the walls are so thin in the treatment rooms, that you can hear the technicians and therapists chatting away on the other side.  The "relaxing" muzak they pipe through does little to cover that.
