My boyfriend and I have been mattress shopping for the past month (it feels like years) to put his 15-year-old Stearns and Fosters to rest. We're both sleeping (I use the term loosely) horribly and mattress shopping ranks either just above or just below car shopping, so an understandable stiffening in the stomach occurs every time we walk in to a mattress shop or the bedding section of a department store. Enter Sovn. April is one of the women working there, a skinny spitfire that put us immediately at ease and lightened our spirits. She took a fast opportunity to get us up to speed on Sovn sleep systems, as they're a unique operation (you don't just walk in and start trying out different mattresses). After piquing our interests, she then took the time - almost an hour, to be exact - to "fit" us to the right mattress, explaining what she was doing and why along the way, having us try out nearly every bed in the store. She was funny, clever, and extremely knowledgeable about the product. And what a product. After all of our shopping, Sovn beds were hands-down the most comfortable beds we tried. The company has a few quirks - namely that they claim to have originated in California, where the beds are assembled from some German parts, yet their website bills them as a Dallas-based "European sleep system" with a Danish name (Sovn apparently means REM). They also contract delivery / removal services with a private company that comes with extra charges for both delivery and removal. And since the sleep systems are adjustable, they guarantee the comfort of their beds through a process where you call and tell them what's wrong and they instruct you over the phone on how to adjust the settings of the bed. If it turns out you need another model, you need to make up the costs and pay the fees for delivery / removal all over again. Above $3,000 for a mattress, I'd expect most of this to be included in the price. But I don't much care. The mattresses were absolute heaven (made of natural materials and a bonus for being able to unzip all of them and look inside and replace padding, etc. when necessary), and the Oxygen Pillow was a wonderful accessory. It remains to be seen if my boyfriend and I can actually afford one of these mattresses (not *outrageously* priced around $3,000 for the model we were looking at, but still well out of our price range), but the pillow might be worth the small investment on its own (about $150). Regardless, kudos April, and kudos Sovn.
