Wow, the chicken fried steak here is amazing - perfectly breaded, moist, and tasty! Tastes even better when you mix it with a runny egg yolk. Mmm.
The blueberry muffin is pretty good too, though not especially stellar. Service was a bit of a miss today as we didn't have any forks, and the waitress gave us forks off of someone else's table (while people were still sitting there..). Kind of strange.

Its late and I don't plan on writing too much.
Every time I've ran in Los Gatos, I usually finish my trail run near this restaurant. So, my friend and I had never eaten Chicken Fried Steak before. After several glowing Yelp reviews about the CFS, we decided to try this place.
My first observation was the restaurant was clean and everyone was laughing and having a great time.
More importantly, the food was delicious. I had the Chicken Fried Steak breakfast and was very pleased with the quality and portion size. Matter of fact, I didn't eat for the remainder of the day.
Despite my many years in the Los Gatos area, I never eaten here. However, I would definitely come back for more.
Been back a couple times now... still solid. The ground beef and spinach scramble is outstanding, biscuits are still to die for.
Avoid the Belgian Waffle. it's totally frozen, and wasn't cooked all the way through when I had it. Bleh. Waste of time and money.

Well, I've only been here once so far BUT... the biscuits and gravy were outstanding. I hadn't had… Read more »
What makes the chicken fried steak so good is that it's hot, peppery, not overly breaded and comes with some of the best country gravy I've ever had, 3 eggs, impressive hash browns and a fresh biscuit. IMHO, better than Effie's, Stacks, Goodies, Los Gatos Cafe. Even my wife, who's not a glutton for "bad for you" food, commented the country gravy was really good. I would've given 4 stars but my wife's pancakes were a little heavier than she likes, not so much light and fluffy, probably wouldn't order them again, but her bacon was good. Still, a solid 3 stars for friendly and quick service, hot tasty food, great value and my new favorite place for chicken fried steak and country gravy.
HUGE greek salads. Delicious! Great breakfast too. Warm and friendly service.
Pros:
Packed on the weekends, people waiting on the sidewalk, but somehow only took us two minutes to get a table.
Table with coffee just outside the door for those who are waiting.
Atmosphere was great, lots of loud happy people jammed into the small dining area.
Menu, lots of choices, anything from French toast to grits.
Banana nut muffin (Mmmm good, better than their French toast)
Can skip lunch after eating breakfast here.
Cons:
Haven't had a chance to eat breakfast here again.
Can't shake the craving for their banana nut muffin.
Skip the swedish pancakes. If you haven't had the biscuits and gravy, have it. Now.
Like most love stories, this one starts out with an ordinary day, ordinary hunger pains, and ordinary expectations for quelling them. I was ushered into SK by a fellow Los Gatos native upon her discovering that I had yet to experience some "life-changing" apple cinnamon french toast that she'd been getting for years and years and couldn't believe I'd never tried it blah blah blah. Now, to fully comprehend what I'm about to tell you, you need to know two things. The first of these: it would be a disgraceful understatement to say that I'm a fan of breakfast, and the other being that I tend to avoid french toast if I can help it. I find this generally forgettable fusion of egg and bread loosely comparable to being excited about a date only to be confronted with pictures of his/ her 5 cats in a voice that should only be used when praising very young children...
But I digress.
The point: I (or rather my friend for me) orders the apple cinnamon french toast and I can't remember who I was before, because I'm not who I was back then. It might not be my better half, but I'd be happy to add to my bottom half if it meant I got to eat it multiple times per week.
Oh and regulars get their pictures on the wall. Pretty sweet.
Moral of the story: Go forth and eat passionately. You never know when you'll find the One!
Was highly recommended and was satisfactory. Philadelphia has much better breakfast places for the same or lower price point but I guess them's the breaks for living in Los Gatos. Mediocre breakfasts that everyone else thinks are amazing.
This is lame but I have to write a review on their...old fashioned oatmeal. I've been here once before and yes, their other breakfast items are great and all but I had mild food poisoning this morning before I met friends for an early breakfast so my stomach was begging mercy so oatmeal was the most benign option.
I was hardly excited but when it came, it was FABULOUS. I've never had oatmeal like this! Toppings were the very normal and boring brown sugar, raisins, and milk. For obvious reasons I opted out on the milk which probably would've made my oatmeal a lot wetter but the oatmeal itself wasn't wet and thick but edged more towards granola like where I could feel and taste each oat. Now I don't know if I could ever go back to eating gunky gooey oatmeal.
This is everything you need and want in a egg/bacon/corned beef hash Saturday morning. Heads up though, it's pretty packed on weekends (for a party of 5, we waited 15-20 minutes). However, once you're in, it's the kind of place where your cup of coffee is NEVER empty.
Also, blueberry muffins here are so freaking soft and delicious, it's crazy.
You should try this place, it's a nice way to start a morning and recession-smart cause you're too full to eat anything else until 9pm.
This place was pretty good...
I'm from Hayward, and went here for breakfast to meet some co-workers..... When I finally got here my first thought was .... "yes... definitely southern" as is waaaaaay the heck down there.
So I was going to go with the eggs benedict.... but after a mumble around the table, it turned out that we all got the chicken fried steak.... ugh.....
A little better than Lou's, but still definitely not freshly made, or with great ingredients. The CFS was obviuosly pre-breaded and cooked and warmed....
This was anothe 3-plate breakfast.... I got 2 pieces of CFS under a ton of gravy(which was quite good) on one plate, then the hash browns and 3 eggs were on another plate, followed by the biscuit on a smaller plate.
The eggs and hash were fine... not a whole lot of opportunity for differentiation here. The biscuit was good.... big... fluffly... easy absorbed the 2 little pats of butter and some of the spare gravy from the CFS.
a bit of a drive... maybe somewhere to go on the way to santa cruz or something.
The service was great, fast, there, constantly refilling my co-workers' coffee.
The price wasn't absurd either. While Lou's was $12.95?? for the CFS... this was better, equally as large, and only $9.95 for the CFS.
Either way, a heavy meal, and no lunch required.
Pretty good little breakfast spot. Coffee outside while you're waiting, which I really enjoy a lot, and an interesting southern theme which you don't see too often in the south bay. The eggs benedict was good, not as good as Bill's Cafe, but definitely a good version, with tons of sauce. I just wish they had a few more varieties of benedicts to choose from, but there was plenty of other good looking dishes as well.
What made this place particularly good was the sides the main dish came with, specifically the options of sides you had to pick from. Each breakfast came with hash browns or grits, which is a pretty cool option that I've never seen before (alas the southern theme). The hash browns were perfectly cooked - brown and crispy on the outside while maintaining a moist, white, creamy inside. Yum! The other options, although my meal didn't include this because it was already carb heavy, allowed you to choose from a banana nut muffin, blueberry muffin, biscuit, or cornbread, all of which came out fresh and warm. I tried the blueberry muffin and biscuit and both lived up to their delicious expectations.
Definitely want to come back to this place, which probably won't be for awhile, not due to poor food quality, but because I rarely find myself in Los Gatos :)
I had the opportunity to have breakfast with Yelper Julie K this morning. Let me start by saying Southern Kitchen is one of my favorite breakfast spots in Los Gatos. I have had the Banana Walnut Pancakes, which are fantastic, along with various omelets, and have never been letdown. On the weekends this place generally has a waiting line outside. I think this has deterred me from eating here more often. Even on a Wednesday morning this place was almost full.
We both ordered the Country Special, which consists of biscuits on the bottom, then a sausage patty, then scrambled eggs, then topped with a generous amount of creamy white sausage gravy. When the Country Specials were brought to the table I looked at it thinking that's a lot of food, especially since it comes with a side of hash browns. From the first bite I could not stop eating the "Special". The creamy white gravy has a wonderful of sausage without being greasy tasting. The biscuit was flaky and perfect for soaking up the gravy, while the generous-sized sausage patty was tasty and melded well with the scrambled eggs. I am generally not a huge fan of hash browns, but these were cooked perfectly, and when paired with some ketchup, I could not stop eating them until completely gone.
Perhaps I will start coming to Southern Kitchen more often again, but will try to make it on weekday mornings. I give this place a solid 4.5 Stars!
Decent food, very quick service. Kind of a long wait to get into this small establishment, but they offer free coffee and water in the outside waiting area.
Great fried green tomatoes. Friends said the florentine eggs benedict was very good. My tuna sandwich was okay, and there was plenty of it. Texture was pasty. The cole slaw was a disappointment--no flavor and too watery. Orange juice is not fresh, but they charge over $4 for a large glass. Not worth the price.
This place is pretty well known, and for good reason. The breakfast they prepare is totally awesome for lack of a more elegant word. I ordered the Eggs Florentine which is basically Eggs Benedict with spinach instead of canadian bacon. It was prepared exactly as it should be, and was tasty to the last bite. I also shared an order of buckwheat pancakes with my fiancee and they were a crowd pleaser as well.
This restaurant is one more reason I wish I lived in Los Gatos.
Been here twice.. the first time I was too car sick too eat. We had just finished the Saturn Relay for Life. So I ended up falling asleep in the both as my van mates munched away...
The second time was a couple weeks ago. Of all the breakfast places, I've eaten at I would have to say Southern Kitchen would rank in the top 5. Service was a little bit uneven... they forgot my biscuit until the very end of the meal.
Overall, I would definitely come again...
It's amazing the things you see when you sit at the counter... The servers, after handling money and the register, turns right around and starts toasting and buttering bread, without washing their hands. We enjoyed our breakfast for about an hour and not a single server washed theirs hands after handling money. Gross.
BUT, the food was tasty! I got the Country Special: biscuits with sausage patties and scrambled eggs covered in gravy. Their gravy was good but the grits could have been less lumpy. Still, we devoured the whole bowl. The hash browns were golden and crispy and the pancakes were the size of my head. All around a satisfying breakfast but seeing the things I saw, I'm not in a hurry to go back.
You need to come several times to try out their incredible list of breakfast menu items! I had the buckwheat blueberry/banana pancakes (not on menu but they make to please)
Staff is friendly and prompt. If you are a breakfast-gotta-have type of person, you won't be disappointed!
Small, but the service and food is great! Quality service and great attention to detail, waiters always coming to your table, bathroom extremely taken care of and smells actually nice and clean.
Had the local favorite, blueberry and banana pancakes
I recommend this place, remember it is small and to arrive early on the weekends for breakfast. People of all ages come here, great to see such enthusiasm and flock of families enjoying their food.
Southern Kitchen Inn in Los Gatos has the most EXCEPTIONAL breakfast you could ever have. Its rated the best in Silicon Valley, We used to eat here every Sunday (till we started packing on the lbs). Now we've cut back to once every 3 weeks, its a treat. The popular items on the menu are:
1. Banana Walnut pancakes
2. Greek Omelet
3. Eggs Benedict
Its a great deal as with eggs you get a choice of coffee cake, or muffins, large buttermilk biscuit, wheat or white toast. Hash brows are amazing as its crispy, light and shredded. If you have never eaten here check it out, I've taken my parents from Modesto here and they loved it.
Enjoy! and Yelp your opinion of this place, it rocks!

Having walked by this place a million times, I just knew I would like it as soon as I made myself actually go in and try it. So unassuming, such unique character; it seems out of place in mid Los Gatos. My kinda breakfast joint; cute and clean.
The husband and I got there about 8:30am on a Sunday and were seated right away (I think we just beat the rush). I had the Country Special (sausage, biscuit, gravy, hash browns). It was awesome, truly. I don't even really like gravy, but I was inspired to try it... sooo glad I did. Flavorful, not runny, not salty. And the biscuit made the whole plate. AND the hash browns were crunchy!
The husband had the Cajun sausage and eggs. He liked it for sure, but kept picking off my plate. I tried my best to hoard the goods, but he is very clever with the old "Hey, what's that over there?" trick. Gets me every time.
All this in a quaint down-home atmosphere. FAST service. Good waiter. AND sprinkles on my hot chocolate. Hayyyyyyyy
The portions are crazy big! I ordered the Country Fried Steak and 3 eggs! To my surprise...2 plates of food came for me:) The Steak was so big it had it's own plate, the eggs, hash browns and fluffy biscuits were on another plate. I'm a pretty big guy as you can see by my pic and I could not finish all the food. I wanted to but couldn't!
The service was good. The server was friendly and crackin dirty jokes with us. Not like the food is dirty but dirty old man jokes. I had to get up once to get a refill on the coffee cause it was crazy busy.
Parking is a pain but totally worth it! They have coffee outside for you as you wait so that's nice but they turn those tables fast so no worries!
Go there and be amazed:)
Southern Kitchen is definitely one of the more popular breakfast stops in Los Gatos. From what I've read/heard, on any given weekend, you'll be waiting for a seat for a while. Luckily, I was there as a party of 2 and didn't have to wait that long.
I had the club benedict and my wife had the banana french toast. The food quality was good, but nothing spectacular. I'd put it on par with a place like stacks. I didn't have the biscuits and southern gravy, which is probably what this place is known for. So, maybe I missed out there. The service was attentive and friendly, which is obviously a plus.
If I could give half-star ratings, this place would be a 3.5 stars.
Damn. Only 4 months into the year and I've already broken my New Year's resolution!

I love a good, big breakfast, and this place delivers. It's a little dark and cramped inside, but the service is friendly and my omlette was awesome. I wasn't terribly impressed with the fried green tomatoes, but everything else was great. It's too bad the wait gets so long on weekends, but there's a reason for it. I'll definitely be back.
Eh, not bad, not great. The food is quickly served which is always a plus and the staff was really friendly.
Looked like a neat little bistro place from outside, but the food was kind of typical coffeehouse/diner style. So it wasn't bad, I just think my expectations were a little different. Food tasty, although lack of fresh OJ and bland scrambled eggs (I'm weirdly particular about my scrambled eggs... I like them a tad undercooked and airy rather than dense or crusty) cancels it out as a go-to breakfast spot. Great, friendly service. Their buttered toast was really, really good. Probably the best part of the meal.
Great breakfast!! We went here this morning before my 10am hair appointment. We read the Yelp reviews and got there early... 8:30 . We were seated immediately.... And out of there by 9, left to wander downtown LG for an hour before my appointment.... But anyway, I'm not complaining, that's super fast dining!
This such a hole-in-the-wall spot, and you just get this family feeling eating there. I could imagine it being on that show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Service is quick and attentive. Our water glasses were always full. I'm not exaggerating... We took a drink, and it was refilled.
My boyfriend got the italian sausage and cheese omelette, with a biscuit and hash browns. The omelette was excellent, but my boyfriend, being the cheese-aholic he is, decided that instead of choosing ONE cheese, he was going to ask for ALL the cheeses (American, swiss, jack, and cheddar).. I love cheese, too, but this was indeed too much cheese. HIS fault, not the restaurant's! The biscuit was huge, dense, and fresh. Delicious. The hash browns were nice and crispy, just the way we like them.
I ordered the banana french toast, with a side of chicken apple cinnamon sausage. The french toast was very good, if a little standard. The banana on top was a whole banana cut vertically and (I think) grilled a little, then sprinkled with cinnamon. I really liked this, but without the banana, it was just your basic french toast. The chicken apple cinnamon sausage was VERY good. They gave it to be in a long patty-type form, instead of links. I actually liked it like that a lot more, and thought that the sausage was very tasty.
Overall, we had a nice experience at Southern Kitchen, and would definitely return to try out some of the other menu items. It WAS a little bit expensive for breakfast (about $35 for the both of us, I think), but hey, this isn't Denny's!!
The food here is great.
so why not 5 stars you may ask..
well lets see we put our names in and they told us 30 minutes..ok we walked around, came back, checked the list after 10 minutes and they said we were 5 people away...great...except every other party goes before us, at least 7 parties, now granted, some were 2 person and sat at the counter..
then they kept saying we were next, they took a party of 3, i asked why them and they said it was only a 3 person table..but we could of made it work, they ignored me.
So we get in, the grits are fantastic, the blueberry/banana pancakes were great, the chicken sausage was fantastic..even the gravy was good (even, bc i don't like gravy..), i think that is their specialty
i wouldn't come here again, maybe if i phoned ahead, maybe with only 1 person instead of a group of 4, but i would definitely do take out here..take it back to your house and enjoy it in the comfort of your own home and not in a crowded room..
the waiters were nice and even apologized for the wait..oh and our wait ended up being 1 hr. double the time they originally said..
A Los Gatos institution. Huge portions and the prices are pretty good although they have gone up about 20% recently.
You will have to wait awhile to get in because it is so crowded on the weekends but it is usually sunny and warm plus they give you free coffee too, so it isn't too bad. Plus, the employees here are so nice and helpful and have been here forever, very little turnover. My family told me that the owner of S.K. used to be a bartender at the Black Watch so he must know everyone in town.
I do like breakfasts but I am not a fanatic so even though these breakfasts are good, what can you do with eggs and potatoes that is so different, not much according to my stomach? They have a giant breakfast that the soccer players in town eat and I got it once, it was huge, delicious and I got sick after eating as much as I could stuff down. Too many carbs.
After reading the other yelp reviews on Los Gatos Cafe being so positive, I may go there to try them now. A little competition is good for everybody.
Rightly an institution for breakfast/brunch, Southern Kitchen makes people happy - large portions that come out fast, very friendly wait staff, consistently good breakfast food, usually no more than $15/person. I usually opt for one of the smoked salmon dishes, as they don't skimp at all on the salmon and the poached eggs are always done right. The omelettes are also quite good. I attempted the pancakes once - they're very good, but don't plan on moving at more than 50% of your usual pace for the rest of the day...
If you're going on the weekend, be prepared to wait outside. There's a little bit of cover from rain and sun, but those spots go fast. SK is no secret, so showing up at 11am or so means you could wait 15-60 minutes. I wouldn't try it with a group larger than 4 or you could be in for an even longer wait. If they offer counter seats, take them - they're comfortable.
The owners and staff are exceedingly nice here. They clearly like what they're doing.
Occasion: Weekend brunch with friends
We ordered: Chicken fried steak platter, Banana nut pancakes, Chicken fried steak & eggs, Spinach & cheese omelette. Plus fried green tomatoes to share.
Price: Maybe about $70-$80 all up? Not sure, as we didn't pay.
What we thought: Good! H thought the chicken fried steak was pretty good... and he'd been looking forward to it for ages, which is usually a recipe for disappointment. The pancakes were great... lots of banana in the pancakes, as well as slivered almonds... yum! P was disappointed with the green tomatoes, but I thought they were pretty yum (although I haven't had them before, so nothing to judge them against).
Would have been almost perfect if they'd served espresso... but they just had normal "cawfee" (yick!). But that's not surprising around here.... oh, for a decent latte!!!
Detoxifying. Renewing. Empowering. My body is an empty vessel. What is power yoga. It is capital "I" for Intense and anyone that believes yoga is all fruits and fluffy stretches, I encourage you to join me for 90 minutes every Saturday morning for a slightly different perspective.
One morning I invited the good doctor to take a class with me, and almost halfway through in downward dog I caught a flicker of hate in his eyes, the one that almost hisses, "Vengeance is mine. I will kill you for trying to kill me." Unbeknownst to me, I was sending the wrong message to my newbie friend. Perhaps we should have started with the Foundations class...
I quickly scanned through my trusty handbook on how to subvert a vendetta:
Do not attempt to outrun.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
Treat him to brunch.
Well I don't know if Southern Kitchen was my ticket to a truce but after a plate of eggs and hash brown his spirit seemed pretty "renewed" and "empowered" on a full stomach. The hash could be crispier and the corn bread more moist for starters. The dishes are heavy and the tables tight. Keep this in mind to gauge how much air you'll need to reserve sucking in your gut in order to squeeze past people on the exit.
So much for burning 600 calories.
There's nothing Southern about the place except that they have grits and biscuits on the menu, and neither of those items are very good. The grits taste vaguely like they're made with milk (gag, gag) that no amount of butter and salt could fix (and where's my shrimp and grits?) and the biscuits were fluffy but dry and flavorless. The rest of the menu reads like any other breakfast/brunch joint and tastes better (but then, I could go anywhere for that, and it wouldn't cost $15 a head).
Asked the guy who seated us what the story was, was the owner or chef actually southern? Cute answer about how a waitress who used to work there now joint-owned the place, but roundabout answer: no, no southerners in residence. More's the pity. I could use a good ham biscuit.
By the by, the gravy for biscuits and gravy should have been a hearty sausage or red-eye, not a flour/cornstarch roux with a little broth.
Absolutely the best breakfast joint in town. You can not go wrong here, anything you order will be great. They have the BEST biscuits and gravy. The staff is great, you get in and out quickly and it is reasonably priced.
It seems my GF only likes to go to the Peninsula when it is pissing down rain, so today was no exception. "Hey let's have breakfast with Holly...in Los Gatos." Well off we went with the rain pissing down, but I must say--it was all worth it--even if we did wait 20 minutes outside in the rain.
I had the Cajun omelet with egg whites. It was filled with just the right amount of sausage, onion and peppers. We ordered a couple biscuits and gravy to share--they were awesome. My breaky-mates had blueberry pancakes and regular pancakes which were great.
Service was jovial and prompt. I could have lingered at the table for a while and had some more coffee, but I felt bad for the folks standing outside in the rain--I had just been there, and heck, 4 cups of coffee is really enough. BUZZ!
I love this place for the blueberry/banana pancakes and sausage selection (3-4 choices with linguica and chicken apple being a couple). The service is friendly and the line is looooong if you wait to long in the morning to come in. I try to get in by 9AM and it's not too bad.
Great omelettes and fresh biscuits too. Friendly fast service too. I like to come here when I'm feeling too lazy to make my own big breakfast.
I haven't tried them for lunch...I tend to separate where I get lunch from breakfast. I haven't seen anything jump off the menu to tempt me other than ordering another big ol' breakfast.
They would get 5 stars if they made an effort with their coffee. It's the same horrid stuff sold everywhere--brown water. I just think stellar breakfasts should be coupled with stellar coffee.
When you have surpassed the hunger "tipping point" as I like to call it you can come here and not be annoyed by the leeeeeengthy wait at Southern Kitchen. The hunger "tipping point" is the moment where you become so hungry that you are unable to eat a maximum amount of food.
I ate here when I had passed the hunger tipping point. I woke up at 6:30 had half a Walgreen's Donut and a few sips of Amino Vital and was out the door. I run three miles at Kenyan speed, more about that later. I decide to stick around and have breakfast with a good friend since we're both in Los Gatos and nearing the optimal moment for gorging. We wait and wait for plans and organizing, by this time it is maybe 9:00am and the need for food consumption is getting close to critical.
We walk to Southern Kitchen and the small place and area in front is crowded. We wait for what seems like an hour and we are finally sitting at the counter. The service is quick and on point and the food is breakfast standard. Unfortunately I had already passed the hunger tipping point so I couldn't even eat the side of biscuits and gravy that I ordered, and this is without the toast they forgot to bring. The biscuits and gravy turned into sad gelatinous globs right before me and I didn't want to look at them anymore as they reminded me of muffin tops, lard and the sheer thought made my running pants feel just a little too sung.
My advice is come when you are semi-hungry and build up eating momentum while you wait outside by playing food word association games and or thinking of what the best breakfast combination is while you do an AM run in preparation for your eggy, starchy feast. When your stomach is at optimum performance this is a perfect place to have a gigantic breakfast.
A good place, but It doesn't beat my favorites. Albeit, breakfast ranking is a very trying and intricate process.
I'm from the South, and I've found, to my great sadness, a dearth of good ol' Southern breakfasts to be had around the Bay Area. Eggs and hash browns are easy to find, but ask for grits and you'll find yourself on the receiving end of "What's a grit?"
We tried Southern Kitchen recently, looking for a hearty and tasty breakfast, and were not disappointed. Servings are gigantic, and the whole meal was delicious. My only criticisms of the food: the grits were prepared more like a traditional grits casserole (fluffy and full of milk or cream, and likely egg whites), and the biscuits were a tad on the dry side. The gravy, however, was superb, and the ham-steak likewise.
This really hit my craving for a big, hearty breakfast like I grew up eating.
