When my friend wanted to meet here over the summer I wasn't too thrilled. The place looks old and run down, and to be totally honest even though this is a melting pot bla bla bla I'm really cautious when it comes to trying other cuisines.
This place is delicious though. The inside is old but it's clean so that's good enough for me. The waiters are attentive so that's another plus. If you're hesitant to visit like I was you should give it a try. You may be surprised -

This is my new favorite breakfast spot!
Its a small place, but found it through Yelp.
We must have driven past this restaurant many times and didnt even know. :o)
The food was tasty and the portions were large. You really get your $$ worth here! -

Finally a breakfast place that was not super crowded on a weekend. We walked in and were immediately seated.
The order:
Pigs in a blanket - the portion is huge! 3 sausages wrapped in pancakes. Tasty but way too much food for me, I could barely finish one.
Blueberry waffle - pretty good as far as waffles go.
Bacon - cooked nice and crispy.
Hashbrowns - bland but that's ok as I can always add a bunch of hot sauce!
The service was good too, they kept the coffee coming and did check in on us from time to time.
I'd come back here again and try some of their other dishes. -

When you pass by out front it looks a little abondoned, however the parking if usually full in the back. The servings are more than enough, you will not leave here hungry. The staff is nice and the orders come quick. Can't wait to come back.

Not for real foodies. Typical breakfast joint with big servings of low quality food. Fake butter, fake maple syrup, fake half and half. Watered down omelets.
Hash browns appear to have been straight from the plastic freezer bag to you. Not very green either. The too-go cups are made of Styrofoam. Big disappointment as we asked a local where to get a good breakfast. But they are crowded as this is what most people thing is good food. -

San Jose's best kept secret. Like everyone else I must have past this place a thousand times and never even thought about going in until I read the reviews. It was packed on a Sunday morning, go figure I didn't even know they had rear parking. Its a small busy place ran with the efficiently of a large busy place. The young hostess was very professional, clear and polite. Even though the place was extremely busy it didn't take away from the prompt and pleasant service of the staff. The portions are huge so splitting a dish with someone wouldn't be uncommon. My scramble eggs were a little bit over cooked but I won't hold that against them the rest of the food was great.
I will definitely repeat -

This place is really cute. Think of it like this: If you have ever been to tahoe, and eaten inside those little brunch places, that's exactly the feeling you get when you sit in this place. Lots of things to choose from! They have mexican style breakfast, and american style breakfast. We ordered the southern fried chicken with swedish pancakes. The southern fried chicken was good! Really moist and tender. The swedish pancakes were REALLY airy and interesting.
Cheap, affordable, good service, good first experience and so much to choose from. I'll definitely be back to try the other items on the menu! -

Good food in big portions for a great price. I've eaten at a restaurant by the same name in Los Gatos that offered good food in big portions for Los Gatos prices. You definitely get more bang for your buck at this location. I don't know if the two locations are/were related...
I ordered the Mexican omelet with a bowl of grits and biscuits and gravy. This may sound like an odd combination, but it hit the spot. The omelet was basically a Spanish omelet placed over some refried beans, which again sounds odd, but it works here. No complaints about the food or prices whatsoever...
The cleanliness of this place is a concern for me, however. The mens room was absolutely disgusting, and I somehow managed to drop some butter underneath my table that I fear is still there as I write this. I told my server about it, and had to remind him again to have someone clean it up as I left. My fear is that it ended up on the bottom of someone's shoe. Nobody seemed too concerned... -

I was looking for something new and different for breakfast a few Sundays ago and stumbled upon this place. If the restaurant has a line outside waiting to be seated for Breakfast in the rain, I assume it is good (this has screwed me over in the past).
I was not disappointed at all, I ordered the Corned Beef Hash and my friend ordered an omelet. Both of our dishes were fantastic, but I preferred the Hash. This place is another "greasy spoon" but the food was not too heavy (no immediate food coma). The service was fast and they were very attentive, even given how crowded they were.
Ambiance at this place is, well, it is a shack. Granted it is a shack with great food and service. It does not feel dirty at all, and everything is clean, but f you are expecting a swanky upscale dining experience, you have not idea what a "greasy spoon" is.
Bonus for all you football fans out there, they do have game on in the back on a small TV. -

I came here a little while ago for a delicious breakfast. The restaurant is located on Monterey Highway just south of downtown San Jose. It's small and a little difficult to find. Parking is in the rear.
I had a good meal of eggs, potatoes and toast. Everything was served quickly and hot. The food was good and filling.
The restaurant was busy for a Saturday morning and business was steady the whole time.
This is a good place to stop to get a decent breakfast if on this side of town. -

We tried this place because it looks cozy and it's nearby. Besides Southern Kitchen has a nice ring around it. Who doesn't want some southern hospitality comfort food.
We order the eggs benedict and omelette and they were both ok. Ordered the Swedish pancakes and they lacked a bit of flavor as well. For swedish pancakes try Country Inn. They have better tasting ones.
I think if we want quick breakfast food and we're in the area, this place will do but if we're looking for something super good, we definitely would go elsewhere. -

Yelpers,
You walk into a cozy cafe atmosphere that wraps you in breakfast smells and flavors...
I had some tasty Chile rellenos and eggs for breakfast. The portiions were large and served with some excellent refried beans.
I am not sure how "Southern" but overall a great breakfast experience that I would go back to. -

First time here, and I have to say that I will be returning! I've never had breakfast this good anywhere! I ordered the chicken fried steak with a side of biscuts and gravy and country potatoes. AWESOME! I was a little skeptical of this place because its sort of in a bad part of the town but this is what I call a hole in the wall place that is WORTH it! The severs were attentive and frequently asked us if we needed anything and made sure our coffee was refilled along with our drinks.

Good breakfast place. The omelettes come with two sides, and the omelette is already a large amount of food. The prices are pretty good for the food they give you.
It's pretty busy on Sunday mornings when everyone else wants to have breakfast too though. -

San Jose, CA
It was 2:30pm and I was craving for some breakfast! I know, it's a little late for breakfast, but why should that stop me?
Most of the breakfast and brunch places that I wanted to go to, were closing at 3pm. Since I was obviously in a bit of a time crunch, I had to settle for a place nearby. My friend recommended Southern Kitchen Coffee Shop and so I agreed. I am always up for trying new places anyways, so why not?
We stepped into the restaurant just in the nick of time. I felt at ease when I saw a few tables still occupied. We were immediately seated at a booth and handed our menus. The menu was quite extensive, with a variety of breakfast and brunch items and even several Mexican dishes. I noticed that the staff was predominantly Hispanic as well, so I came to the conclusion that the restaurant was owned by a Hispanic family. I have never been to a restaurant that served breakfast, brunch, and Mexican food before, so kudos to them!
I got myself a breakfast benedict with a side of breakfast potatoes (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) and my friend got the traditional American breakfast, with sausage, bacon, eggs, and pancakes. My benedict came with biscuits and sausage, topped with two poached eggs and hollaindaise sauce. The hollaindaise sauce was heavily spiced, which complimented well with the eggs and sausage. The breakfast potatoes were a little on the salty side, but it was okay.
The place was pretty old and dingy--the epitome of the saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Prices were fairly inexpensive, considering the huge serving sizes. The food was okay, but I would only come back if it was convenient. -

Woke up on a saturday afternoon and wanted to get some brunch! Me and my friend decided to try something different. I got corned beef hash benedict w/ swedish pancakes. The corned beef hash benedict was sooo goood & their swedish pancakes were good. Not as good as millbrae pancake house, where i usually get them. My friend got bacon and eggs w/ country potatoes and toast. Portions were really good. The whole place was very homey . I loved it :)

A friend had recommend this place a while back. I was in the area on a Sunday and figured it was time to try Southern Kitchen.
When we got there, there was defiantly a wait, which made me think that this had to be amazing. We waited for about 15 minutes and got seated.
I have to say the service was not all that great. Our waiter was not very friendly, I'm not sure if he was just too busy or was in a bad mood.
The menu has a great selection. Many things to pick from. Sadly, not many healthy options. When I asked the waiter to make some changes to my order (trying to make it healthy) he made a face.
The prices are very reasonable and the portions are very generous.
I would definitely go back and try something else and maybe I will get a nicer waiter. -

After a long night in San Jose, I was in need of greasy yummy breakfast.
The dude saw this on yelp, and wanted to give it a try. We came in, and did not wait at all. Party of 2 seems so easy to sit. We took a long look at the menu while the waiters came fast with coffee and orange juice. We were amazed with the many choices... everything sounded delicious.
We end up ordering chicken fried steak and country benedict. OMG everything tasted so delicious. And the portions were pretty big for the price we were paying. I really wanted waffles, but my stomach was suffering from drinking all night. I would love to come this spot again and try the waffles, or something sweet than savory. The service was also on top of their sh__. They checked up on us, gave us advice, and even refilled the coffee and water without us asking. I gotta say, I love me some breakfast here! -

This place was great. I ordered a scramble with home fries, bell peppers, ham and eggs on top, yummers! The potatoes for the home fries were flavored all the way through and were amazing. The only fault is the ham in chopped up so small it's hard to get a good bite of flavor. I'm a person who likes to get some of all the ingredients on one fork to really experience the plate as it should be experienced but with the ham being chopped so small it was hard work. Even with the ham issue the food is so good and the portions are huge, order one and share, and at only $10 per person you can't beat it. I will definitely be coming here again when I'm in San Jose.

This place was o.k. however, i ordered the chicken fried steak with scrambled eggs and received sunnyside up? the CFS was ok.(bite of wyoming is better) My lady had an omleltte with bacon but the bacon was all pink. to make a long story short we asked to get it taken of the bill but the owner said NO. mind you they talked about it right in front of us (how professional) we will not be back. thanks but NO thanks! I'll stick with "JUST BREAKFAST"

Huge servings, great breakfast and lunch selections and really....it is like going home and having breakfast at my favorite diner by the Ohio River.
Service is great - sit anywhere you like even the central bar.
My favorite is the corned beef hash! -

MY MOST FAVORITE BREAKFAST PLACE! It was necessary to type in CAPS because it seriously reflects the portion sizes. HUMONGOUSSS! I came with 2 other friends and we almost couldn't finish 2 orders. I took my guy friend who have humongous appetites here and they could barely finish one for themself. Southern food- this is what I'm talking about! It's so good I came here twice in a row for breakfast once. I was happy, but my clogged arteries told me otherwise.
Seriously though- get the omlettes. And the Swedish pancakes- don't forget to use the spread! Terrific. -

My husband and I go out for breakfast once a week and Southern Kitchen is on our short list of restaurants. If you want a fancy brunch you might want to go elsewhere. It's good eats and good service. I love getting a Sunday paper and having a nice breakfast here. It's a great way to start a day.

More homey, but also more flavorful than Bill's IMO.
Got my usual breakfast favorite - chicken apple sausage with sunny side up eggs and home fries. Sausage was yummy and had a nice grilled flavor. Eggs were a little runny for my taste (read: runny whites) but doable. Home fries were nicely seasoned but a tad al dente for me.
I got a side of the swedish pancakes with my breakfast and was not disappointed. They came with a generous scoop of lingonberry butter that I was, at first, a little skeptical of. I usually don't have butter with my pancakes and planned on avoiding the more saturated portions. I sampled a little bit and fell instantly in love with the butter. As disgusting as it sounds, I basically used bits of pancake as an excuse to transfer smears of butter into my mouth. My dining companion thought this was disgusting but it was so so good! Give it a shot :). -

A family owned restaurant with an extensive menu, huge portions, and a really good chicken fried steak. If you want to save money and calories, two people could share a breakfast and both get full and happy.

Don't be afraid of this place's rough exterior! The food is yummy and inexpensive, the portions are huge, and service is attentive.
I came here with the family for brunch. There's lots of options on the menu! There really is something for everyone.
I ordered the hash benedict with country potatoes. The hollandaise sauce was full of flavor and the corn beef hash was very crispy! The country potaoes were crispy on the edges. They were seasoned and cooked with bell peppers, green and white onions. All for about $9.
My mom ordered the seafood omlet, with pancakes, and hash browns. The seafood omlet was huge! I swear it had a whole salmon in it! Haha. It also had lots of pieces of shrimp and some crab. The pancakes were very fluffy and big. The hash browns were crispy as they should be. This dish was $9.50 but was more than enough for one person.
My dad ordered the steak, eggs, and hash browns. The steak was grilled and cut thinly. It was just okay.
Pretty impressive for a hole in the wall. Give it a try, don't be scurred (: -

Better experience second time around. This time I got a skillet of potatoes, ham, veggies and hollandaise (on the side). Much better tasting meal.
Also the service was outstanding. My husband ordered pancakes with his omlet so I could share and the waitress was nice enough to bring us an extra plate without being asked. It's the little things that make the difference between a good experience and a great one :)Listed in: It all starts with breakfast

This place is a great breakfast spot, soak up the alcohol from the night before. Comfort food for when u are hungry and feeling crappy.
I ordered the special, a delicious chicken fried steak, 3 eggs cooked to perfection, hash browns and seriously awesome biscuits and gravy for $8.99! Great big portions, good prices and the food is so good! Highly recommended for someone looking for comfort food. -

I've always wanted to stop by this place while driving on Monterey Highway. This past Saturday, I was able to take it off my bookmarks! YAY!
You don't expect much just looking at the exterior of the place. Going inside, it's just a typical hole in the wall type of breakfast diner. But looking at the menu will get you drooling! There's a good amount of selection here. I think I may have chosen something "just alright". I chose the rancher's breakfast and substituted the Swedish Pancakes for the regular pancakes. The rancher's breakfast comes with a whole gripload of meat: 3 long bacon strips and 3 huge sausages. (Plus the protien: 3 eggs!) The sausage was juicy and good, not sure if it was the casing that was all wrinkly around the middle. Weird.
The swedish pancakes came out a bit colder than I would like. Unless that's how you serve it. I know there are a lot of raves for it but I tried my friend's pancakes.... I would have rather had the regular fluffy pancakes.
Our server was nice. Not overly nice. But nice enough. The busboys made sure we were well stocked with coffee.
Although I gave you 3 stars, I am definitely coming back here again and hoping that I can UP it with another star. -

Deliciousss.. I got the seafood omelette breakfast special with extra crispy hash browns and swedish pancakes. The omelette had salmon shrimp and crab? with hollandaise sauce over it. The hash browns were super crispy on the outside and nice and soft on the inside, the perfect combo in my opinion! &&the pancakes came with this strawberry butter? i dont know what it was, but it was goood.
Good portions, good food, & good environment.
The place looks cozy and the workers were extremely nice.
I'd definitely come again! -

My company holds our holiday breakfast here every year. Mostly because its one of the few breakfast spots that doesn't suck.
They give you a ton to eat here as most spots do, but each thing is worth eating. I get the chicken fried steak, pancakes, hash browns and fruit.
The first year I went here I got explosive diarrhea but I still come back. Its that good. -

In general, I am a fan of most breakfast joints and Southern Kitchen being one of the better "non franchise chain" type places it was definitely above average.
After a long weekend of partying, we came here Valentine's day morning for recovery breakfast (or brunch, I guess). It was about 1 or 2PM, and there were about 3-4 other tables occupied. Not too busy, but the place is kind of small.
Ordered the fried chicken and eggs meal which came with a bunch of side options. We ended up picking biscuits with gravy, country potatoes and an extra order of swedish pancakes. This was enough to fill 2 people with pretty big appetites =). The swedish pancakes were ok, but were too full to finish by the time we ate everything else.
Service was great, they provided us with so many condiments when I only asked for hollandaise on the side. It was good they brought out everything because we ended up using it. The salsa was a nice touch on the eggs, and I used the hollandaise to drizzle over my potatoes. Mm! Also shook some tabasco over the gravy biscuits and it was delicious. The fried chicken was also really good, well seasoned and very crispy.
Would definitely come back for a good breakfast. Good prices too! Our total came out to be ~$17? -

Yes, this place deserves 5 stars.
I have to say...if a breakfast place is too fancy schmancy looking..then it's not going to be good. Since this place literally looks like a hole-in-a-wall diner..you know it's going to be good.
This was my 2nd time here and both times the food was friggen fabulous.
I always judge a breakfast joint on 2 things.
1. Eggs Benedict
2. Hash browns/country potatoes.
This place did not disappoint. The first time around I had the Country Eggs Benedict and the plate was delish. The biscuits were moist, the holladaise and poached eggs were just perfect. The potatoes were not only real, but so well seasoned that you don't need any sort of condiments like ketchup.
Yesterday we had brunch there and I ordered the County Breakfast. This included 3 sausage patties, 3 eggs, 2 biscuits with gravy and country potatoes. The gravy...OMG, i had to order extra because I just wanted to dip each morsel into that pool of goodness. Mind you, I am 4 months pregnant and I still couldn't finish the meal. As yummy as the food was, I was just too full.
We live about 13 miles away, but will definitely be making a lot of trips there for breakfast. -
Review from Jana S.
Had occasion to be in Silicon Valley super early one morning (as in doors open at 06), and so bided some time with a bargain basement breakfast that begged for a doggy bag!!!
Southern Kitchen... only the employees I spotted didn't sport Southern draaaaaaawls..nope. They were speakin' Spanish and looked more of the "Hispanic" persuasion to me... which made me laugh.. the name of the joint, and the reality (Nope.. no Mel, Vera, or Alice here!)
Chicken fried steak breakfast special... I didn't eat again until nighttime that night, and broke my meal up into two phases....that was the way to approach it for me.
Coffee shop simple, extensive menu, blue-collar type environment, off forgotten Monterey Road, and excellent value for your $.
Do it, if you're gonna brew it...and need some gruel it!!!
