We used to really enjoy coming to Southern Burger but a lot has changed since our previous visit. The biggest change was the reduction of the menu to only basic items and flavors across the different selections. This did not fully deter us though and we stayed anyway. What did influence--and eventually determined--our decision not to return was...
1) Lack of availability of product: denying a customer a chicken sandwich because they might need the chicken later for child customers is not rational or fair to every customer regardless of age, etc.
2) Moldy cheese in the loaded tatchoes: maintaining proper FIFO in the kitchen is essential to guarantee freshness of product. When it is not followed and product is not properly updated, you get rot, mold, and spoil. I'm not taking the chance.
I am willing to travel for quality and, next time I take family out for burgers, will certainly be doing so next time I want a burger. Can't recommend Southern Burger Co.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Sep 22, 2021Previous reviewOh do we love to treat ourselves to a good burger every-now-and-again. Southern Burger has become one of the places we prefer for their choices of burger patties, toppings, and other menu items. Service is always a delight and nicely upbeat. When it comes to the foods, the only negative I can note is their follow through on orders. Unfortunately, we sometimes find toppings missing from our burger order or the doneness mixed up between the burgers. We share issues with our server, if there is anything, and they always make things right.
They have outdoor and indoor dining options available. The outdoor dining option is also pet friendly which is an extra bonus for us with the dogs. - Jim D.Chattanooga, TN417724Sep 25, 2023
Used to be our weekly go to place. Perfectly cooked cheeseburgers and fries. We don't know what happened but things went down hill dramatically in the past year - started getting our meals to go - burgers were raw, fries were uncooked or overcooked.
Found an alternative, Thank God, and won't be back hereHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Lisa S.Arden, NC748023Dec 19, 2023
Burgers were great. Service was a little slow with food for a party of six coming out at very different times. But overall pretty good especially for the price.

We used to love this place, we would order our food to-go and out of the past 7 orders, only 2 were correct. One order we were missing the majority of our toppings including cheese... we don't eat meat so their black bean burger is our go to, we've gotten regular burgers instead.
It's frustrating when you're ordering something specific and it isn't correct on multiple occasions. We can only call and complain so many times.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Kennard Y.Atlanta, GA382945Jun 11, 2022Updated review
Used to be our absolute, 100% favorite burger in town!! What happened?
Southern Burger was "the best burger place in Chattanooga" as far as my wife and I were concerned. We would come back from long hikes or exhausting mountain bike rides and head straight to SB for great, big burgers and piles of crispy, golden-brown French fries, HUGE crunchy panko breaded onion rings. Not any more. The burgers seem smaller, the small "pile" of French fries were under cooked and the premium up-charge for onion rings yielded an even smaller "pile" of wimpy rings. Look at some of the older pictures here on Yelp and compare them to the ones on this review and you will see what I mean. We even asked our waiter about the small onion rings and undercooked fries. He said, "Yeah, people didn't like the old union rings and your fries, uh, sorry, yeah, they were probably trying get your order out too quickly."
When you describe the perfect French fry you use words like hot, crispy and golden-brown. Why not just make sure they always come out that way?
So, prices are going up everywhere, I get it and I'm not complaining about that. But, what you get for your "mo" money seems to be declining and it breaks my heart. Overall, it's still good but just not stand-out great.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Jun 15, 2019Previous reviewGreat food but horrible service. There can be up to eight waiters in the restaurant at any given time but the service is still terrible as you see them just standing around doing nothing. The blame has to be on horrible ownership and management.
Jun 13, 2015Previous reviewSouthern Burger Co. Is a mixed bag of amazing food and equally horrible service. The burgers are worthy of a Diners, Drive-ins and Dives visit. Every food item from the Appetizers to the sides are awesome. But it's the unique burgers that are off the chart. If you visit, please don't get a plain burger. Venture out to a fried egg burger or a Jalapeño burger with Bacon jelly. Yes you heard right. The owner is a burger genius but he desperately needs help with the front house.
But be warned. After years of eating here, I gotta tell you that the service is a bad as the food is good. I'm serious, the owner consistently under staffs the restaurant and you literally need to get up and get your own refill. But you get yelled at (I'm not joking here) for being thirsty and ignored. Just today we sat at the table with empty glasses, flagged our waitress, who flashed is the "hold on finger" but never came over. My wife finally got up to fill our glasses at the machine and the waitress yelled "Hey! You can't do that! I'll get you a refill." Well, no...you won't, you didn't and haven't. Then she said, "I'm here alone and I'm swamped." Ok, I sympathize but don't yell at us for getting our own drinks. I'm actually happy to get my own refill when our waitress is busy.
So, get ready to feast on five-star food with one-star service. For us, the good out-weighs the bad and we keep coming back and will continue to do so. Yep, the food is that good. - Phillip D.Sarasota, FL1001111Jan 11, 2023
I ordered the Southwest Cobb like I have done countless times in the past. It has always been great, until now. I requested the chicken fried and tossed in Buffalo, which Buffalo came on the side (no big deal). The avocado looks terrible. The lettuce is not romaine as the menu says. There is no egg as the menu says. We also ordered two of the same salads. We asked for blue cheese dressing for one and ranch with the other. We received no ranch dressing.
For a place that used to be a top notch place to eat and get a beer, it's got down hill. We have recently had minor service and food quality issues when ordering other things but this came out poor and nothing close to what the menu says. It very well could be our last time spending our money here which is which is a bummer seeming how we have been somewhat frequent customers since the day they opened.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jerry P.Kosciusko, MS0221Nov 8, 2023
We visited on November 4th, festival going on in the square, but Justin and the staff handled our party of 9 in an expedient manner. Food was great as always. Burgers and tots were delicious. Great service, good atmosphere, delicious food. Definitely a must to stop if in the area.

Passed through Ooltewah on a road trip and found this little gem nestled in Cambridge Square. The shopping center itself had plenty of parking, including several gravel lots that accommodated our tow vehicle and camper.
Southern Burger Co was incredibly clean, inviting, and well staffed. We were immediately shown to the patio where our dog was brought water. The staff were incredibly friendly to both us and our pup. Our server, Jonas, made great food recommendations. Service all around was above and beyond, plus James and the rest of the kitchen staff cooked our food to delicious perfection. This place has fried foods down to a science! The fried pickles were crisp, the tater tots were terrific, and the French fries were the pinnacle of potatoes. We left Southern Burger Co both stuffed and satisfied, and I can guarantee we'll be back for more of the Nashville hot chicken!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jose G.San Juan, Puerto Rico02Oct 28, 2023
Tots are good. Make sure to clarify you want the meat medium well or well done because they will make it medium rare. I would suggest to the restaurant to begin asking how the customer would like it cooked. White bread come out under done aswell. Toast it more. maybe
