I've been going here since I was a kid and the place hasn't change a bit. The decor is the same, and the regulars are too. Yes, my grandparents lived in Cudahy and took us on Saturday nights. It seemed like a really fancy place back then in the late 70's! Not so much now...well, maybe it does for my son! I think this place is fine for kids.  And if you're worried about them waiting in the smoky bar, just make a reservation and you'll be fine!

Yes, the bar is smoky. This is Milwaukee, where old habits die hard. I've never had to wait because my parents and grandma insist on keeping a 5pm standing reservation they've had for years. This place starts serving the blue hairs at 3:30pm. Seriously! Check out the Specials board by the Hostess stand; sometimes there's a really good fish special! And of course, steak.

This is a true old school Supper Club. Steak and Fish are king, and they do both very well at South Woods! My mom and sister rave about the salmon, I love the broiled Haddock. The last time I had the Friday Fish Fry the Cod was nice and flaky. My dad loves the prime rib and my son favors the fresh salads and spaghetti. It's kind of hard to eat healthy at South Woods. Your best bet is the fish, with a salad and there's always some kind of vegetable. When I was there a few weeks ago the veggie side was Morroccan Vegetables! I mean, this is Cudahy! Crazy...

The prices are higher than the average restaurant, but moderate for a steak house, and the Fish Fry is very reasonable. Portions are ample, so you should be able to have leftovers the next day too! So, Milwaukee, pull up a Blue Plate with the Blue Hairs and let's do Supper!

Food is great, reasonable prices, great service but the chairs are too close together. My wife is a large boned woman and people had to move or get up for her to get out.

South Woods is a family favorite.  Not mine, but because often times family events such as birthdays or anniversaries are celebrated there, I frequent this establishment. The reason that I have a miserable experience each time I go may be because I have small children.

This restaurant is certainly NOT kid-friendly.  It starts with the layout.  The tiny waiting area has only two chairs, usually reserved for the oldest people waiting, in your party or not.  Kids don't stand still in small areas very well.

Next, the tables are placed pretty close together, which means when I back out my chair I have to look over my shoulder to check to see if I am going to hit anyone with it.  Generally, kids don't do this.

Lastly, the bathrooms, (which every parent has to locate immediately upon entering a restaurant, in addition to eyeballing the fastest escape route from the table to the restrooms) are located in the bar.  Steering three kids through the drunken crowd, hoping no one drops the "F" bomb, is not my idea of kid-friendly.

The last time we were there, after the waitress took our order, I asked that the kids' meals come out when they were done-- rather than wait for all the steaks to be fully cooked and to give them something to do other than back their chairs out into the other patrons-- and I got an "I'll try."  That response seemed odd to me, maybe it was the tone in her voice that seemed insincere that tipped me off.

Although they have a decent choice of items on the kids' menu my children were unimpressed with the mini corn dogs or the chicken strips.  The salads that came with their meals (yes! salads! I was impressed by this) were literally drowning in dressing, which my kids were turned off by.

As an adult, I can see some appeal to this restaurant.  The prime rib is great!  The onion soup is a bit salty, I'd order it again, but without the bread/crouton in it.  The salads as I mentioned were doused in dressing.  The service could still use some help.  I am telling you a smile from the staff wouldn't make the long wait for food so terrible.

As a parent-- a word of warning to other parents:  If you have to go-- Get a sitter.
