Very soon there is going to be a new player in the pizza panorama of South University, and perhaps then South U Pizza might decide to step up its game.
Recently, I was peckish around lunch time, and really wanted a slice of pizza. While there are a bunch of places with pies on the perimeter of campus, slices seemed harder to come by.
One of the great things about slice shops is that the pies are on display, so you can eat with your eyes and see what you're getting yourself into. The pizzas at South U looked better than the place around the corner, but even still, they were unremarkable.
So I did the only sensible thing. I ordered a buffalo chicken slice.
No matter the quality of the pie, putting a delicious topping like buffalo chicken on it, will produce a tasty treat. And it was. However, the slice would have been infinitely better if it was reheated in the oven before being served from the rotating warmer display.
In New York, that's just how it's done. Maybe in Michigan slice shops just do things differently. There is no easy access to the pizza oven from the front counter at this establishment, so the place clearly isn't designed to reheat slices. More's the pity.
On the plus side, the garlic knots are freaking excellent. On the strength of the knots alone, I'm happy to elevate South U to three stars, even if the sauce served along side these burnished, deeply seasoned bread twists was stone cold. Seriously, that's how good the knots are.
Next time I'm feeling like a snack, I may just go for an order of those knots, instead of eating a slice of that greasy floppy "pizza".
A little music in the dining area wouldn't hurt either. When I was there, the silence was a little unsettling, especially with a room full of people eating their lunch. Still, I don't need ambiance at a slice shop. I just need a slice with a good crisp bottom, and ideally some bubbles popping up from the crust. But that's another story.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Sep 22, 2017
After having this pie, I am thoroughly baffled as to why locals insist on frequenting nearby NYDP, which has got nothing on this place. Ooey, gooey cheese. Not sure what mushrooms go in the four mushroom pizza, but it was meaty, mushroomy goodness, and that's good with us. Though it would be funny to find out that the the stated four mushrooms is cremini, baby bella, and portabella alongside typical white buttons, since those three are actually the same mushroom in different stages of growth. *shrug*
Also, your check-in comes with a stellar coupon - be sure to put that to good use.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 50561418Jul 7, 2017
Drunk a 4, sober a 3 for Ann Arbor, I found this pizza as average as average gets. As you walk in the restaurant it smells like a musty locker room or water that has sat in a dirty mop for a while. I went real simple and ordered a large pepperoni pizza for $17. At that price they are comparable to NY pizza, the pizza was very oily, the crust was chewy, and, I felt he could have added more sauce, I could barely taste the sauce in my pie. After eating here my rankings for Ann Arbor pizza are as follows:
1. Neopaplis (Best taste and value)
2. Mani's Osteria (Great flavor, but pricey so, I gave the edge to neopaplis)
3. Bigalora
4. NYPD pizza
5. Pieology
6. Blaze
7. South U
8. Pizza house

Listen, I've been grabbing slices here since 2010 when the building used to be a coffee shop with crepes. The service is always good and the pizza is always cheesy. The reason I'm writing a review today, however, is because the woman working tonight (didn't get her name) was a champion. She talked about the cheese they use, asked me how my night was going, and we struck up a small conversation about me being a teacher. She said some really kind words about the profession and it just brighten my night. And to top it all off, I accidentally left my car keys on the counter and when I sent my bf back to grab them, she explained how she ran out to yell for the "cute little Asian girl."
All in all, I think this is pizza is superior to backroom for that late night slice and the service is always kind. Shout out to you guys!! Keep it up :)Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Stella T.Chicago, IL155130804Jun 12, 2016
I'm not embarrassed to admit that this is one of my favorite establishments in Ann Arbor. One of my favoirte things about going out on South U is that it puts me in close proximity to this glorious pizza joint.
The pizza here is sold by the slice, so it's perfect when I'm just a little hungry late at night. I usually ask for whatever slice is the freshest. I've made the mistake of waiting too long to eat my food here, and the result was cheese that wasn't as melted and satisfying. You really can't go wrong with any topping though! The plain old cheese is delicious, and so are the specialty slices.
I pick this place over Backroom every time. Spend a little more for your post-drinking snack. It's worth it!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - John T.New Orleans, LA060Jun 18, 2019
I work around the corner, so it was my first time having pizza at South U.
My review could easily go up or down as I continue to order at this place.
I walk in already having had lunch (I'm generally a packer), but wanted to try this place out. I figured I'd try a buffalo chicken slice.
I walk in around 12:30, there are 2 tables filled. I go to look at the slices (no one is at the register), and am a bit disappointed because the selection was small, and the single slice of buffalo chicken pizza left was very small and had 1 piece of chicken. No matter, I'm sure the lunch rush took all the rest, so I went for a slice of cheese (I couldn't justify spending $4 on the small slice of buffalo chicken).
The cheese pizza was very cheesy and quite delicious, however, this pizza may have been the single greasiest slice of pizza I've ever eaten. I don't usually pat down my pizza with a paper towel, but I did this time.
Still, the pizza was generally pretty solid (not great), and I'll be trying it again!
There was a young lady at the register, and I have to commend her. She got what appeared to be a very angry person from a company wondering where their pizza was. She explained to them that the number they gave her was incorrect, so she had no way to contact them. Despite their anger (based on what she was saying, I could tell that the call was less than pleasant), I think she handled the situation well.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Matt T.Dearborn, MI410May 6, 2018
Ordered pizza for delivery at 12AM but when we called they told us to order with eat street.
Pizza took an hour and was super greasy. Cheese bread was not very hot and was also greasy. Over all 2 stars for below average pizza at 1AM.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Evelyn K.Saline, MI351835Aug 28, 2017
Pizza slices are good for a quick lunch break. Use to go all the time. Loved when they remodeled and offered the salad bar and many other choices of food. Unfortunately, they got rid of most of that.
My main concern though, is one of the employees I encountered today. Outside in the parking lot. Unfortunately, because of the construction I couldn't park in a regular space. So I parked along side and left a note to call or text me if my car needed to be moved. I wasn't going to be there for long, just meeting someone to sell some furniture to. All of the sudden I look at my phone and I had two texts messages "Is that a joke parking like this blocking everyone " and "I'm towing your car right now"
1. I personally know the only person that can have cars towed out of the lot.
2. A simple, hey...could I have you move your car, would of suffice.
So, I hurry up to go outside so I can move the car. And both me and my client get cursed out. 'F$&@ing joke' 'you're a sh&$ bag' every word in the book. I apologized extensively...with no avail. Very rude and harsh. No reasoning with this guy.
Fortunately, my client understood...Ann Arbor has lots of crazies.
My suggestion to you would be to ask your employees to remove your logo before they throw a temper tantrum. This experience has completely left me disgusted and not wanting to return to your establishment.
Very unacceptable behavior.
I looked up his number and the first name was Mohammad. Please contact me if you would like his phone number and last name.
I understand being blocked in. We use to park in the ally across the street. And it's upsetting when someone blocks you in. If they leave a number we call or text them in a nice way to please move their car. If there's no note, we going around asking if it's their car. And when they do show...never have we even once cursed them out and chased them down the street. Always "thank you for moving...next time leave your number."
I hope a conversation is had with this employee, it's very upsetting. Still shaking...and this was a little over three and a half hours ago. Thank you.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Vinny M.Ann Arbor, MI0451Feb 24, 2019
The owner is great. His workers are great. The pizza is great.
Why only five stars then? The owner doesn't have a staff, so one has to wait. I think he is being penny wise and pound foolish. But it doesn't matter. Waiting for service means you only get 4 stars at best. For a walk-in pizza place, you should not have to wait at all. That's what "walk in" means.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - William W.Crystal City, Arlington, VA81743Mar 12, 2017Updated review
I stopped by here on Friday to redeem their Hooked deal, $11.99 for a 3 topping pizza and a 2 liter. I have had good experiences in the past and was hoping for the same today.
I placed my order, but the cashier denied my card. He said they don't accept credit on any deals. I was floored as I have always paid with card here no issues. I offered debit and he denied that also. To add insult I was the only one in the restaurant and he was on his cell phone speaking with TransUnion while I was trying to place an order. I understand that all cards have fees for businesses, but in 2017 to deny a purchase due to card in unreasonable especially next to a college campus. He tried charging me around $22 if I wanted to use card. I said I would run to the ATM instead. The fact that I have to leave your store to get cash out is crazy in 2017.
I also listened to other's orders while I was waiting for mine and he consistently asked every person for cash and would hand out free slices if you paid with cash. I understand where fees are at, generally below 4%, a 4% loss is definitely less than an entire slice of pizza. I'm unsure of where the cashier's priorities are.
The pizza came out pretty fast and was exactly what I expected. The thing that will keep me from coming back was the cashier on his cell and their crazy card rules. :( I enjoyed South U while it lasted.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Dec 15, 2015Previous reviewMuch better than other A2 pizza places. Their prices are perfect and service friendly. I think their dining room could use a little money to clean, but better than other pizza joints.
