Review from DONNA L.
Honolulu, HI
Tuesday $2 fish taco. A little stick of grilled fish on a warm corn tortilla topped with juicy coleslaw. Tasty. Why only 4 stars? I don't like their dining area - it's cramped and unsanitary. Outside there is no place to eat or sit. So by the time I relocate, my meal is already disintegrating. Still tasty though.
South Shore Grill uses biodegradable paperboard takeout boxes. -

Very cool surfer grindage joint.
Off the beaten path a little bit, but really inexpensive and great sized portions.
I really liked this place, will be returning. -
Review from Manda S.
Reasons why SSG was wonderful:
- Fish Tacos! I got one grilled and one fried and both were very good. The fish was flavorful and wasn't fishy-tasting. I've never had a coleslaw like theirs before--it was different but I liked it. The white sauce that it comes with was also very good. I would come back just for these.
- They take the iD card here. YAY!
- The cashier girls were sweet, helpful with the menu, and the food came out relatively fast.
- On a whim, I ordered some kind of choco mac nut cookie. It was great!
------
Reasons why SSG was not so wonderful:
- The dining area was VERY dirty. Dirty as in unwiped, food-encrusted, sticky tables. Luckily, I had one of those wipes from Teddy's (thank goodness!). A couple minutes later, one of the customers got the spray and cloth from someone (the cashier, I think?) and started wiping down all the tables herself.
- Mix Plate (came with a fish taco, kalbi, and BBQ chicken) was just okay. (Obviously) we liked the fish taco but didn't care for the kalbi or the BBQ chicken.
- There were no napkins? I found a roll of brown paper (kind of like the paper towels you'd find in a bathroom).
-------
Several little birdies whispered to me that SSG had awesome fish tacos and they were right! The next time I come here for my tacos (or perhaps fish burrito), I'm definitely getting them to go. -

Can I just say, that after almost 2 years since I've been here (I'm from California), I still dream about and crave the shrimp tacos from here!! They are seriously the best thing I've ever put in my mouth!! If i had all the money in the world, I would fly here just for the shrimp tacos!! I don't remember which one I ordered, but they. were. SO. GOOD. Hence, the 5-stars. JUST FOR THE SHRIMP TACOSSS.

They have a very EXTENSIVE menu so don't get overwhelmed when you walk through the door...take your time to really look it over before you order! They accept IDcard here for a 20% discount woot woot!
They also have taco Tuesdays here and their fish taco is to die for...they put this homemade cole slaw in it and it's something different....in a good way. I'd recommend just ordering the tacos and fries, skip the plate (you only get extra cole slaw and it's not neccessary). Fries are scrumptious and everything in there smells pretty good.
Next time I go I'm having a burger.....and spicy fries :)
Oooh, also...you can add salsa for free to everything. -

It doesn't get much better than this in terms of mixed plates.
Fish Taco - to die for! Fish is perfectly cooked and not fishy at all! Aioli and slaw is the perfectly compliement, not too heavily dressed.
Kalbi - Delish!
BBQ Chicken - As good as it gets with other mixed plates I have
What really sets this apart is also the mac salad. tuna mac, a little spicy. Very unique and diff from most other mac salads. Other joints should take note!
If you are walking to Diamond Head from Waikiki this is right on the way. Otherwise it's worth the detour walk or cab ride too check it out! -
Review from Jenny F.
Great food for awesome prices! 3.5 stars.
Nearly everything here is under $10, and portions are a good size for the plate lunches--as others have said, hapa rice, coleslaw, and tuna mac with a touch of cayenne I think!
I normally don't like coleslaw or mac salad (too much mayo), but these were not bad, and I actually liked their tuna mac! Not a lot of tuna, but the mayo wasn't overwhelming and I loved the little kick of spice!
I tried the fish tacos, kalbi, bbq chx, pesto salmon, teri mahi, and garlic fries.
Fish tacos were fresh, but the slaw was overpowering and I couldn't really taste the fish under all of it.
Kalbi was not bad--it's boneless, which is nice, and very tender.
BBQ chx was pretty good! It's white meat so it's better for you, and it's cooked perfectly, very juicy, and good flavor.
Pesto salmon was just this side of overcooked, but the pesto was delicious and the portion was generous.
Mahi was cooked well, but not that much flavor.
Garlic fries were really good though--I love their smashed garlic! so good!!
I'm definitely coming back to try more, that's for sure. Their sandwiches sound delish. So for now, the food was ok, but I'm sure when I go back again I'll bump it up. -
Review from Karen D.
True to its name, South Shore Grill has a laid-back vibe appropriate to surfers and beach goers jonesing for a lil' somethin' somethin'. This casual hole-in-the-wall offers fresh fare at a very affordable price. The owners, Bruce and Jenn, are about at nice as they come, too.
South Shore Grill has a large menu of sandwiches, burritos, plate lunches, salads, and more. They offer a keiki menu, too. (See their menu at http://www.southshoreg...) Personally, I like their homemade cookies and other baked goodies!
My only complaints are that parking is hard to find here, there's not too much seating, and it can get really hot in the dining area. This is a good place to grab a bite to go, well, to the south shore or wherever it is you're heading.
Be sure to check out their Taco Tuesday special, which is just $2 for a good-sized, tasty fish or chicken taco. Friday is "fish and chips" day. You can print their online coupon at http://www.mrmealdeal.... or find it in the Entertainment Book. If you listen to 95.5 FM The Fish, they give promo codes in their ads, too.
South Shore Grill is open for lunch and dinner until 9:00pm. It's on the mauka side of Monserrat between Kanaina and Campbell Aves (two blocks past Kapiolani Park heading toward Diamond Head).

The five stars is for Taco Tuesday and $2 tacos. Where other places would go manini on the dollar style taco, these guys give you the same taco you'd get otherwise. I personally enjoy the fried fish taco but I digress.
The mix plate is pretty ono, they have a rotating selection of sweets, open pretty much the whole day, and the staff is cool. Every time I go, I plan to eat something new but pretty much get the fish tacos or the fish'n'chips if I'm there on the right day and it's surprising that I can actually say the mix plate is ono. Anyway, go check it out for yourself, it's a great place to eat after the beach or to grab and plate and eat at Diamond Head lookout, the park, or wherever. -

WTF?!?!?
Kalbi is dece, but super manini. (Not entirely convinced it's not store bought marinade)
Pastrami is dece, but mostly fat. (Liked the hint of garlic tho)
Fish tacos are a sad, sloppy mess. (No me gusta)
Hapa rice & soggy, over-sauced slaw?!?!? (Cannot compute)
I stand by my WTF.

A very, very smart friend of mine found this treasure as we were walking to Diamondhead. South Shore Grill is approx 2 miles away from the Beach hotels, and totally worth the walk.
I am a sucker for fish tacos and South Shore does not dissapoint. SO SCRUMPTIOUS!! The fish is cooked perfectly, delicate and light with no fishy flavors. The slaw that accompanies the fish is the perfect companion. A mix of both white and brown rice came with the tacos as well as a macaroni salad. The rice was cooked well and the mac salad was surpising......mixed with a bit of tuna, tasty, and just the right amount of spice.
If you love fish tacos.........GO TO SOUTH SHORE GRILL -
Review from G I.
Honolulu, HI
Excellent fish tacos and great proportions that satisfied my appetite after a long hike with my girlfriend. She ordered the salmon with a pesto topping and that was delicious as well! This place was off the main road a little, but totally worth it. The fish in both dishes were juicy and full of flavor. And their special aioli was great! The only problem we had was with one of the employees. The person who I spoke to originally told me that the man at the cashier would help us out. But when we approached the register, he took one look at us and walked away. I don't want to jump to conclusions, but I think it had to do with my appearance. (that day I sort of dressed like a tourist from another country, even though I spoke perfect English to the person who had originally helped me.) However, the employee I spoke to originally immediately stepped up and helped us with our order. So, I suppose that made up for it. Despite being ignored, I will return someday for delicious food.

Came here for the first time yesterday for Taco Tuesday - $2 mahi mahi tacos! You can have the mahi mahi grilled or fried. I opted for the grilled mahi mahi. I wish they would put a little more fish in the taco, but otherwise, it was good.
The garlic fries are AMAZING! Just as good as Gordon Biersch!
The cookie with the Reeses peanut butter cup in the middle for $.50 was just ok. I thought it would be better. But the lemon jello cake that my friend bought was delish! -

Want fish tacos? You'll like it here. It's a laid-back shop with some good fish tacos. The kalbi and homemade desserts are good, too.
So what would up the rating of this place? Parking can be rough. I usually park across the street in the Bogarts parking lot (I don't know if that's okay, but no one's ever said anything). Also, the tables are usually a little dirty, like no one goes around to wipe them down.
I like this place and if I'm in the area, it's definitely one of my choices for lunch. -

I love South Shore Grill! Their food is really good, but it can be on the pricey side. They do, however, give you a lot of food. I personally love their fish tacos -- the best ones I've had on island thus far. Sometimes the sauce can be a little tangy though. Their cole slaw is pretty good too. I love their mac salad w/ tuna in it. Their kalbi is good too, but it's on the sweet side.
I haven't experienced a long wait, but I hear it can take forever. Each time I've been there, I've only had to wait 15 minutes max.. so not bad so far.
Bottom line: Try this place. You'd be surprised how good their food really is. I'm definitely going back to try other stuff on the menu. -

I am soooo grateful and thrilled to have a restaurant like SSG in my new neighborhood! The people are always pleasant, the food is always ono, and the peanut butter cookies...well, they are awesome but I wish I had more self-control over them! Lol. Had the Steak Burger with brown gravy and fried onions tonight. It was juicy, cooked to perfection, and it came with rice, tuna-mac salad, and slaw. (I do love SSG's slaw but next time I'm gonna have double tuna-mac salad...yummy!) The bulletin board which posed the question "what would you like to accomplish before you die" kept me entertained while I waited for my food. Keep up the great work, SSG...we love ya!

Came here again because I was craving for their food and also because I had a coupon for BOGO free that was expiring. I got there around 11 and there were a couple people waiting for their order. I got their fish burrito which comes with rice, lettuce, tomato, and aioli and for my second item I got their chicken salad with their house vinaigrette. The wait was about 15 or so minutes because it looked like there was only one cook behind the counter. Anyway, their fish "burrito" was more like a big taco as it wasn't fully wrapped like a burrito but more open faced. It was generously filled though so that was nice. The fish was also very moist and the whole thing was just super flavorful. As for the salad it was just a regular old salad mix, nothing too special. Their house dressing was pretty good though and the chicken breast was moist and flavorful. Yeah, its a bit expensive but it taste fresh and most importantly it taste good =91 Previous Review: Show all »

I've been dining at South Shore Grill for a number of years now, but something happened to me this time around that prompted this review. My service there this time was beyond exceptional! Bruce took my order and while my credit card was processing, engaged in friendly conversation. When my order was ready, the cook asked me if I needed a bag when I went up to the window to grab my take out order. On my way out, Bruce opened the door for me to exit and said that they would see me when I was back on that side of the mountain (something we talked about in our previous conversation). He too offered me a bag since I didn't take one from the cook.
Although this wouldn't seem like exceptional service to some, I've worked in the restaurant business for a number of years and I've learned that simple connections with customers (being friendly, remembering someone's name and/or developing a small rapport with them) makes all the difference in the world. Thanks Bruce for keeping great service alive! -

BEST fish tacos ever!!! If you haven't been here before, this is the first thing you MUST try, hands down.
My second favorite plate: BBQ Chicken. It's the bomb dot com. Just try it.
Both plates run about $8.50 each or so, but so worth it. And grab a large drink to go with your plate while you're at it.
The staff are really chill and awesome. There was a lady standing in line in front of me and she was so picky about what ingredients were in the food. She was REALLY annoying me because her attitude gave off a vibe that screamed, "I'm too good for this place and only eating here because my son wants to." The girl behind the counter, however, answered her questions so patiently and acknowledged my (im)patience. Somehow, that girl knew how to quickly get that lady out of the way so I could order my food. Way to go!
Other than that, you gotta find street parking. We always find a spot, but just giving you fair warning. :) -

In the past, I would've given SSG 5 stars for their tasty, fresh food and great prices. Tonight, though, I was a little bummed to find that some prices have gone up and the fish in my fish tacos was exceedingly skimpy. For $8.75, I got two fish tacos -- light on the fish, but delish nonetheless -- and a lump of cole slaw and a side of fries (I always go for spicy). For a meal primarily consisting of cabbage and fries, it struck me as a little pricey and, after wiping the plate clean, all 110 pounds of myself were content, but not full.
I love their peanut butter cookie bites for dessert, which are a steal at just 50 cents a piece. I've also really enjoyed the mahi salad, which tastes healthy and fresh with a light tangy dressing. If you're really hungry, you might want to try the mixed plate, which is a good value for all the meat you get.
It usually takes some time for the food to be prepped, so don't come here expecting a grab-and-go. That's not usually a problem for me, but it's good to know that ahead of time. And if you dine in, there's no public restroom, so go light on the liquids! -

Pretty darn good. Real good. My friends and I are in Honolulu for work and I wanted to try a place away from the touristy area of Waikiki where we are staying.
I had the mixed plate- chicken, fish tacos, and korean BBQ. The beef was flavorful and really tender, the chicken was moist, and the fish taco had just the right tangy kick. My only quibble was that the corn tortilla was pretty hard.
For $9, I left stuffed and happy. I'm coming back soonest! -
Review from Robert G.

The food here is very good but the service and comfort level is another story. Even when it's not crowded, it has the feel of being disorganized. You order at an uninviting counter and then make your way through a narrow passageway into the next room where you find an unappealing collection of tables and chairs. It can be difficult to find comfortable seating to enjoy your food and they have a big sign stating that there are no public (including customer) restrooms. As this place is way off the tourist path and nowhere near the beach, are they really afraid folks will come all the way to SSG just to use the restroom?? So I give it 4 stars for the food and value but that's about it.

I was craving for another version of the mixed plate.. So I check on my trusty Yelp in my Phone.. We don't want to walk long so we saw South Shore Grill not far from our hotel..
We ordered the mixed plate (of course) and the grilled mahi http://media1.ct.yelpc.... The mixed plate has seasoned galbi, bbq chicken, fish taco, mac salad, and south shore colelaw for $9.50.. The grilled mahi is seasoned with mac nut pesto, garlic butter, soy sesame with mac salad and coleslaw for $8.25... Oh Wow, the fish taco was crazy good.. It exploded in my mouth with flavor and the grilled mahi was perfectly seasoned, not too salty or sickening to the stomach.. Galbi consisted of teriyaki flavor with diced green onions, just melted in my mouth.. I stuffed myself once again..
Friendly staff, waiting wasn't long, and a nice atmosphere to chow down..
We had another great experience eating at this place.. Recommended to all tourists..
Damn, I love to eat..Listed in: Yelptastic!, I love HOLE IN THE WALLS.., Hawaiian grub

The food is pretty good here, not amazing but solid for the price. A good selection. The place is pretty filthy though. No one buses tables and the customers certainly don't leave it clean. Not a bad place to stop by if you're there, but I would not come out of my way to go here.

Great local restaurant! So glad we stopped for lunch!
Got the SSB (south shore burger) which was delicious! They put their special coleslaw on top of the burger which gives extra little umph of flavor!

Definitely try their homemade cookies---chocolate chip macadamia and peanut butter reeses---totally homemade!!!
Unfortunately, no public restroom---FYI! -

Mmm, I think I am in love with this place! The fish tacos here are to die for! My first fish taco experience was in LA, and the tacos tasted really fishy (no pun intended). That totally put me off and kept me away from fish tacos, until now. I usually order my fish tacos here grilled. They come topped with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and their oh-so-heavenly aioli sauce. Order a side of fries with extra aioli sauce (25 cents, I think), and you are good to go! Also, if you come on a Tuesday, fish tacos are only $2 apiece. What. a. steal.
My only gripe with this place is that their service is kind of slow. And when I get my order, the tacos are never warm! It's not a huge deal, but you would think they'd be at least a little warm if the fish came straight off the grill. They're not cold either, but it's just weird, I guess. There are a few metered parking stalls right in front of this place, with more across the street. But if you're chang like me, you can always park on one of the nearby residential streets and walk! -

South Shore Grill is actually really tasty.
Now there are a bunch of qualifiers.
If you can find parking, if the line isn't too long, if you can find a clean table, if the wait for your food doesn't take too long, South Shore Grill can be a great place to pick up a relatively inexpensive and tasty meal.
I like the SSG Burger, and straight fries.
Friends of mine swear by the fish tacos. -
Review from Jennine T.
Aiea, HI
My friend recommended South Shore Grill, and the menu looked so appetizing. I felt like I wanted to order one of everything.
My husband ordered the chicken burrito. He thought it was OK, but spicy. The burrito was on the small side and my husband said he wouldn't eat there again because the price was too high for the portion and what you got.
I had the Caprese sandwich, which came on Ciabatta. I really enjoyed the sandwich. I have to admit though that Papa Luck's on the Manoa Campus has a way better Caprese sandwich. Papa Luck will grill it and add balsamic. It makes a huge difference. However, I enjoyed my sandwich, and it was reasonably priced.
We ordered the fish fingers off the keiki menu for my son. The fish fingers were very tasty. They were very meaty, and crispy. The fries are your average fries.
The worst part of the meal was the chocolate shake. It was $3.50 and it was a plastic cup of milk, with some chocolate syrup. I wouldn't advertise that as a chocolate shake. In my mind, a chocolate shake should be thick and well-mixed. I should have returned it and asked for my money back. It was that bad, but my company might have been embarrassed, so I just drank it.
The restaurant is pretty dirty. No one comes by between guests to wipe down the tables, so we had to do that. They also had limited condiments, so you have to share with other people, but people bring them to their tables and don't return them, and then you have to go ask the other diners for it. I hate that.
I also don't understand why people ask for tips if there is no service. I didn't tip, but if I had, I would wonder why. The prices are already a little high, and then no one wipes the tables, no one cleans up the plates. I saw one guy who works there bringing in a big trash can from outside, and then he went in the back, and came right out and started touching all the chairs. That kind of grosses me out.
I MIGHT eat here again, but I think it might be like Russian Roulette, some things are probably good, and some probably aren't. I like consistency, and then Diamond Head Grill is right up the road, and it is so much better. I would go there. -

I used up my two groupons I had bought for this place and im pretty much done with SSG. They two times I have been there, wasnt good. You have to wait awhile for your food, the place is filthy and the food is mediocre at best.
Their menu selection is huge and maybe I ordered the wrong things. I had the SSG burger and kalbi. The burger was soooo small. The bun was actually about a inch bigger all around. They kalbi was salty and tasted over marinaded. The meat was also so tough.
They dont empty their trash cans very often and its open, so you see all everyone elses half eaten garbage.Comment from Bruce B. of South Shore Grill 4/23/2011

Discovered this place while on the way home from a power walk around Diamond Head. We were starving at the end. Since discovering South Shore Grill, we've been back a few times within a couple weeks.
TIP: Tuesdays feature $2 fish or chicken (soft) tacos. Yeah, they aren't $1 but are made to order & features fish instead of ground beef.
Caprese Sandwich $5.95 = Mac Nut Pesto, Buffalo Mozzarella, Tomatoes, Basil & Olive Oil on Toasted Ciabatta. OMG!!! Soooooo goooood!!! If you want to totally amp it up - add bacon! To die for!!! Another tip - there's enough Mac Nut Pesto to scrape off 1 side of the sandwich & mix w/fries - wow!
Mix Plate $9.95 = Fish Taco, Kal-Bi & BBQ Chicken - Friend got it w/ fries. Lots of food. Definitely not lacking in protein.
Fish Taco $3 (or $2 on Tuesdays) = Grilled Mahimahi, aioli & SSG slaw. Since it was late, they were out of slaw so it came with chopped lettuce, tomatoes & aioli. I really liked it because not a cabbage fan. 1-2 of the tacos make a light meal. I believe you may get the mahi fried.
Beware of the Peanutbutter Temptations! (PB cookie w/ PB cup in the middle!) & Mac-Nut Choc Chip Cookies which scream your name from the counter while you're ordering. At only $0.50 how can you resist??? -

Reviews on the site are great so we decide to go but our experience was pretty poor. We order a salmon burrito and 2 fried fish (mahi mahi) tacos with fries. What we end up getting is a fish (mahi mahi) burrito and 2 grilled mahi mahi tacos with fries. Not exactly what we ordered but that's okay.
The tacos end up with extremely thin (think doublemint gum-like strips) of grill mahi mahi. Lukewarm at best. The fries that came with the tacos, they were actually cold. The burrito ends up with hot mahi mahi, overstuffed compared to the tacos.
Why the big difference in plates? I don't know. Likely the fries and mahi mahi for the tacos were leftover from previous orders or something. Not awesome if you're gonna just have it wait around for the next customer. This was our only negative experience during our recent stay, so it's not like we're picking on them. -

BEST FISH TACOS I'VE EVER HAD!
I have had two plates of fish tacos since I got back home to CA and all I can think about is this place. The dudes from the place we rented mopeds from were grubbin on these when we got there and recommended this place to us. If you can, try and come on a Tuesday because its $2 taco day (taco tuesdays woohoo!). They are bigger in size than most places and they like grill the tortillas so they are nice and crunchy. They layer in the (ah-ma-zing) cole slaw in there, salsa and the mahi mahi. The cole slaw is refreshing and tangy, the salsa's got a bit of a kick and the mahi mahi...party in my mouth and tummy! Just thinking about it is making my mouth water.Comment from Bruce B. of South Shore Grill 4/11/2011

A few critical (and appropriate) reviews of late seem to have influenced the managment to evaluate their business practices. Two things I've been critical off in the past (bad fish, absurd employee fashion) seem to be on track to recovery.
My wife and I gave SSG another shot (we were once weekly fans, btw) and are impressed at the improved fish quality (either a new supplier, or they finally are throwing bad fish out instead of using it) as well as the vibrant flavors and color of the produce. They have new ciabatta bread for their sandwiches and the food tasted as good as we remembered!
The service was better than it had been in recent months. The two gents working were prompt, friendly, and made a point to ask how our food was and if we were enjoying ourselves. I still have to wonder a bit about a cashier who's pants are sinched half-way down his butt but at least the service is better than it used to be.....
If you've written off SSG perhaps you can try again--we weren't blown away by a 180 degree recovery, but were impressed enough to keep coming back.Listed in: Casual Grinds

Got a tip from a local that worked at The Clothes Chick (thanks Sunny!), since we were driving that day, were on that side of the island (convenient), we stopped for dinner.
The menu is a chalkboard. You order and pay at the counter. They will call you when it's ready. There is seating along the window and walls (stools) as well as chairs and tables. The floor is black and white. The colors on the walls are every color in the crayola crayon box and then some. The framed prints on the walls are of tropical beach shots. The place has a cool beach vibe about it. The condiments were located on the counter (mmm, sriracha sauce, like it spicy).
It was a tuesday night and was relatively empty (two other patrons) when we arrived. Later, a group of four people came for dinner, but we were nearly done. There were four people working there; all were pleasant. I noticed the chef was an asian girl (kudos to the chef).
I had the fish tacos plate- two fish tacos, side of slaw, hapa rice (half brown, half white), and mac salad. I didn't know that the fish tacos had slaw already so I actually had two servings of slaw, so I invited my husband to have some too. It was a lot of food, I didn't finish it. I'd probably just get the tacos next time, though. Everything was excellent! The fish was really good, the slaw, rice, and mac salad were all flavorful. My hubby had the fish burrito- he loved it. We also got the chips (freshly made) & salsa, which was also very good. Dinner was under $22.00. I noticed that the baked good were 50 cents a piece (cheap, right?).
So, my husband was like "Why do I think we're going to the same places on our driving days, on our next trip?" He's right, 'cause now we have new-found favorites, this being in the top five, at that. We are fans.Listed in: 808 Trips
