Having never been to Philly, I guess I may not be an "expert" when it comes to an authentic philly cheese steaks......therefore I can only base it on taste AND what I have tried in and around the OC since I haven't made it out to LA and any reknowned joints in LA.....this place has one of the best I have had, simple and tasty

The bread was perfect and worth the inconvenience of shipping them in from Philadelphia  as far as other national chains who claim to do so, their bread has never been anything close to what  they have at this truck, and the meat is fresh not frozen, and you can really taste the difference...the quality at this truck is much higher.

One last thing I can say....I have never been a fan of cheese whiz-lol...but a friend who told me about this truck recommended it, as did the 2 guys in the truck...saying that provolone is just too mild......so with reservations and low expectations regarding the cheese whiz...I gave it shot and "wit wiz" which turned out to be very very good.... so don't underestimate the goodness of the whiz.

Overall, it was a very good sandwich, rich with flavor and very satisfying overall....something not many trucks  reward you with when you leave.......contentment!!

Friendly service, great sandwiches and gourmet sodas (also imported from Philly) and tasty kakes (which I didn't try-haha).......what more could ya ask for??, definitely worth many future return trips...if it were only closer...prolly a good thing for my waistline.

Greasy....... or "greazy." Depending on where you are from.

1. Coated or soiled with grease.
2. Containing grease, especially too much grease: a greasy hamburger.
3. Suggestive of grease in slickness or slipperiness: a greasy character.

ie, "After I ate this cheesesteak, I felt greasier then Spencer from The Hills."

If you know what a true Philly cheese steak is, you will appreciate this. If you had one, once, in Philly or somewhere else and think you know what a cheese steak is, you don't. If you havent had one before, go to the grocery store, buy some Steak-Umms and dont write reviews of which you know nothing.

This is about as close to a philly cheese steak as you will find in this rat hole of a city. No, its not Tony Lukes, and it is not like the ones served at the Four Seasons in Philadelphia, but its good. Tony Lukes is not coming to LA, he is smarter than that. The bread was close to being right as it could get, the steak was a little salty, but that was okay. Not quite enough provolone, and it was not melted as it should have been but I am not going to give it less than five stars for that.

I haven't tried anything else on their menu. Why bother, I am sure it is good but I just want the cheesesteak.

This is probably one of the best food places in LA, considering the majority of LA food is crap. Now, if I could only get someone to open a WaWa truck and start serving real hoagies.

Going back to Philly

I don't think so..

Going back to (South) Philly (experience)?

I don't think so.

Before the cops scared off most of the trucks during Artwalk last night, I came across this truck and since I haven't tried it and vaguely remember hearing about it, I decided to try it.

Let's just say it's not always sunny in Philadelphia. Especially not South Philly if this is the experience I got out of it.

The sandwich starts off bad at almost $9. That, for a Philly cheese streak, seems way too much. Especially for truck food. I can imagine a buck or two over the typical cost due to gas/van upkeep. But to make a $5 sandwich turn into $9 just by putting it in a truck? No thanks. Philly experience is really out of the price range of common sense. Especially when you can get he same thing from Great steak or something.

Def. not worth the price. And while I'll defend Banh Mi's costing a few bucks more, at least you're more hard pressed to find Banh Mi's elsewhere. Philly cheese steaks, on the other hand, any mall can give you a half way decent one.

Then it really didn't taste all that special at all. It was pretty bland and really really generic.

I may have to drink some brews at Paddy's Pub to try to forget this boring sandwich. boring. Pass

This has been on my list as a must try truck and it happened to be near my office this week.  I got a Cheesesteak wit Onions, American and Whiz and also grabbed some peppers and hot sauce to add later.  I took it back to work and unwrapped this beauty of a sandwich and let the grease flood all over me desk.  I took a few bites and thought, "They did it right".  Enough cheese, thin meat and a nice roll.  When it comes to cheesesteaks you can only mess them up.  There are times where I have had cheesesteaks and thought "this was a waste of a heart attack and food coma", but The West Philly Experience was worth it.  Although, I have not had an official cheesesteak in Philly, I plan to on my next trip to NY, in which I am going to take the Amtrak to Philly grab a Genos and Pats and get my true test.  But for now West Philly Experience and South Street (Burbank) will be the closest I get.

Service: 4.5
Food: 4.7
Uniqueness and Variety: 3.4
Everyday Lunching: 2 (If I am in the mood this will hit the spot, but I do not think this or the grilled cheese truck are safe to eat more than once a month)
Overall: 4.4
Ever

As I was making my way towards what I thought was the usual taco truck parked beside 3rd & Grand, I was pleasantly surprised that it was a cheesesteak truck instead.  I instantly thought, "Yay, another variety in the mix!"  Right away, I ordered the cheesesteak with wiz and onions and for $8 and some change, I got a foot long worth of food coma to enjoy at my desk.

Although I can't say this was the best cheesesteak I had nor the Philly experience that I remember , it is definitely worth a try.  Also, imo one thing that did stand out was the bread.

So, would this be part of my weekly rotation?  Probably not...since cheesesteaks aren't LA figure friendly BUT i'm sure i wouldn't pass it up at 3AM (give or take) somewhere in LA....

A quick decision to try this truck today for lunch since it was right down the street from work.

I get a little excited as I get to check off these food trucks, as I try them out.

Now lets see, the sandwich was alright, nothing too OMG I need to drive across town to get some. But if it's in the area and im hungry for a gut bomb this will work.

I do recommend though adding some hot sauce or Tapatio to your order. It gives the sandwich a little more character :)

Finally a place in LA to get what I need! "Wiz wit!"  The sandwiches are yumm, the bread is on point. The only problem is they aren't where you want them to be when you want it!

They have a chicken one now, a brocolli rabe and TASTY KAKES! The bread is straight from the east coast, Amaroso rolls make the best bread for these sandwiches!

$8.95 a sandwich, these are foot long full sized sandwiches, enough to cause a food coma!

If you are looking for what most of us Philly Cheesesteak lovers want, find these guys and give them a try!

I'm just starting to recover from the intense food coma that cheese steak induced...2 hours ago!

I ordered the cheese steak with onions...and just had to get the Cheese Whiz (whiz wit'!). OMG...heaven. Such heaven. I've had cheese steaks before just never with the cheese whiz and I definitley see what all the hype is about. That puppy was a whole lot bigger than I had anticipated but somehow I managed to stuff it almost entirely in my belly. (Helloooo bootcamp later tonight! Gotta burn off all that cheese!) It was also probably the greasiest thing I've ever eaten even inclusive of pizzas. I had to wipe my hands and mouth with tissues (I didn't grab any napkins at the truck...my fatal mistake) after each and every single bite! Otherwise, I was in love....although it's more like one of those secret tryst kind of loves because there's no way I can frequent this pleasure more than once in a blue moon if I want to maintain my recently trimmed down figure.

Really cute and funny staff too. Nothing but smiles and shouts of "cheeeeese steak!" or "whiz wit'!!!". They all seem to be having a blast and a half. I barely waited more than 2 or 3 minutes for my sandwich to be ready, but then again I was the only customer there at the time.

South Philly Experience should visit Westwood more often! It fills the niche left by the closing of South Street quite nicely. I hope more people discover this truck.

Well, $9.23 for a cheesesteak? A bit much if you ask me but, I was craving it so thought I'd give it a try. Pretty good, pretty greasy.  I'd prefer it with more cheese, though.

My main complaint lies in the fact that when I asked for mustard, I was told that no one eats them with mustard on the east coast - just ketchup (they also have hot sauce).

Ok buddy, I lived a decade on the east coast and always had mustard on my cheesesteaks. I've eaten them twice on South Street in Philly and they had mustard.

Fine - you think they should be eaten with ketchup but provide mustard for those who don't share your tastebuds.  I mean, you're serving a sandwich with steak and onions. Mustard's the natural compliment.

Thumbs Middle.

I vouch the experience is authenticated by the long Amoroso rolls and Tasty Kake's (when they have them).  I also like the Hawaiian Punch drink option, not found on any of the other trucks.

I dunno nuttin 'bout a real Philly Cheese Steak.
...So I got it with provolone and onions.  Not bad.  I prefer more cheese and crustier / toastier bread, but then again, maybe I'm just an ignoramus.  Will definitely try a wiz wit' next time if they come back.

At $8.50, it's a tad pricey as far as truck food goes, but I'd say it's worth it.  As for volume, I'm a moderate female eater, and I was able to finish the whole thing.

Real amoroso rolls fantastic steak, one of the best Phill Steak Sandwiches I have had in LA.

They even make a popper pizza steak with steak, peperoni, provolone, cheese, and sauce!

I am writing a non review, review, egh ehm...recommendation.

Try the wiz wit(steak with cheez wiz and onions), the italian(steak with provolone, home-made marinara and broccoli rabe), and the eggplant parmesan( breaded eggplant, provolone, and home-made marinara)
For some the $9 and change seems a bit pricey but the sandwiches are 9" so it is a deal when you think about it. Show these guys some love and follow them on twitter http://twitter.com/Sou...

So the claim is that they have authentic Philly bread, which they actually fly in from Philly. And that makes it fresh how? Id rather have a fresh roll from Ralph's then the semi crusty baguette my sandwich was served on.
Bread aside, the meat was nothing special, although it was  fairly large and filling sandwich, which almost makes it worth the $8.50. Almost.

Rolled up on the South Philly Experience truck a few weeks back after an 'SC home game and had a kick-ass Philly Cheese Steak, Wiz Wit.

I go to Philly on business trips a lot and have hit spots like Geno's and Pat's... they've got nothing on the Experience.

First off I think it's fair to say that a good sandwich always starts with the bread: I'm pretty sure they fly the stuff in from Philly and it shows, crusty on the outside and soft on the inside.  The steak they use is bomb too (rib-eye), not some sorry flank steak that I've had at other spots.  Plus I am notorious for being a big eater and I was hard-pressed to finish this sandwich (even though I wouldn't let this thing take me down).

Definitely going back when I get a chance.  Keep up the good work boys.

awesome! didn't think i could finish that whole thing but i did! it was THAT good! :)

now i haven't had pat's or geno's yet but i reckon i just had an authentic philly cheesesteak from a truck! i had a wiz wit'out and enjoyed every single bite of it. so greasy and delicious! a bit expensive at 8.50 for food trucks but the serving size was big enough and the amount of meat in the sandwich was enough to justify the price. plus i heard their bread comes from a bakery in philly so that should count for something.

i forgot to put this: truck #9 on my quest! by now i think it's not even relevant to count anymore because i want to try all of them. :)

As a Philly native, I was hesitant to try this truck that claims to deliver a "South Philly Experience". They were parked outside of my office at lunchtime and after smelling the cheesesteak my coworker had just gotten, I decided I needed to try one myself. I got excited when i approached the window and saw the boxes of Amoroso rolls staring back at me! They were off to a good start. I ordered my Wiz Wit and was asked if I wanted any Tastykakes with it? HELL YEA! Tastykakes!?! Within 10 minutes I was walking back into my office with my cheesesteak and one of each tastykake in hand. My mouth was watering...and I am a picky eater so this does not happen often.
The roll was bigger than I had thought I would receive and was perfectly filled with a cheesy meat and onion mixture...definitely worth the price for the sandwich. I even ended up going back down to the truck to buy a chicken wiz wit so I could have it for dinner. It met every expectation...they even took credit cards!!

Needless to say, they are the reason i joined YELP.  This is the real deal...it was the BEST cheesesteak I have had in LA, hands down!! (and I have tried them all...believe me!)

Thank you, thank you South Philly Experience!!

Was waiting for this truck to open up since I read about it on the LAT's blog a few weeks ago.  http://latimesblogs.la....

My steak experience: Originally from North Jersey, so cheesesteaks have been a regular, if somewhat infrequent, part of my entire life. Friends were into Pat's over Geno's, and so was I. Saw Page from Phish there once. Studied for the CA bar exam at UPenn one summer, and made a point to explore more. Had Abner's at least once a week, and found that Jim's was my favorite in the city (though I've still never tried John's Roast Pork, shameful I know).

Anyway, they're finally open, and they posted on their twitter feed that they were on Abbot Kinney, so I hopped on my bike and excitedly pedaled over there.  They've only been open about a week now.  There wasn't any roast pork, chicken, or fries on the menu, as advertised. So the menu was skimpy, but imo that also demonstrates they're serious about offering a quality product, which was confirmed, as described below.

Ordered a wiz wit' to go.  For those of you not from the east coast, that's a cheesesteak with grilled onions and cheese wiz, which is better than you might think if you've never had it before, and is what is generally recommended to novices.  If you're racist against onions, respect.  You want a wiz wit'out.  If you think you're racist against cheese wiz, order it that way anyway, you ignoramus.  Once you've had it that way once, you're free to order it with provolone, but I suspect it's your elitist tendencies that are the problem as opposed to the actual flavor.

Verdict on steak: OM NOM NOM NOM. Easily the best I've had outside of Philadelphia. Tastes, looks, smells the way it's supposed to.  Greasy and delicious.  Looks big, but you could probably inhale three in under ten minutes if you're drunk enough.  Reminiscent of the random cheesesteak trucks you'll find scattered throughout Philly. Which is a good thing.  Amoroso rolls, wiz, onions, peppers, all right on the money. Will eat again!

I hate giving low reviews to a new business - so please note that this review is for the chicken cheese steak only.
Let me begin.
Waking up hungover and craving something from Philly - where I was born and raised for 30 years - I tracked down this new(ish) and exciting truck.  They were not that far from me downtown, their Twitter account and web page said at 900 Exposition/ the Natural History Museum, so I hopped in the car and south on the 110 I went.
It took FOREVER to find them. It is a HUGE complex with an insurmountable construction, so I drove around.  And around. And around.  Ends up they were way off the road (exposition) at the entrance to the museum.  I guess it makes sense, but for the dim witted and hung over - if they said that they were going to be at the ENTRANCE of the museum, and stated the cross streets, it would have been a lot easier.  (And the museum entrance is definitely not 900 Exposition).
Taking so much time to find them has NO effect on my food review at all.
Arrived at the clean looking truck to find great customer service with a smile.  The prices were definitely reasonable and they had a variety of drinks, Tastycakes and Amoroso rolls.  I happily ordered a chicken cheese steak with fried onions and american cheee, paid my money and eagerly awaited what I was sure to be a wonderful perfect sandwich.
Got the sandwich, opened it up and was SO disappointed.  The chicken was CHOPPED INTO PIECES.  Little cubes.  Squares.  Of chicken.  This is not right!  At all Philly steak establishments (not Pats or Ginos since they don't do chicken) the chicken meat is cut the
same way as the steak meat.  Sliced, im my non-chef opinion, like on a meat slicer.  Like a deli.  Or think of chicken version of Steak-umms (gross but you get the point).
However - that being said - i give 5 stars to the white american cheese.  It was DIVINE.  There is nothing like white american cheese.  Yellow doesn't cut it.  In fact - I never even knew that other than white colored american cheese existed until after I moved from Philadelphia.  But I digress...
The roll was worth the flight in from the east coast.
It was nicely greasy.
The onions were neither here or there.  I prefer the long sliced cooked ones, and these were in chunks, which just made the whole chicken-chunk onion-chunk sandwich unappealing consistency wise.  But on their own they were delicious.
So more than a review - this is a plea to the nice people working the truck to PLEASE PLEASE cook the chicken like it is meant to be.  It will definitely be a 5 star review if you do - all the elements were there.
That is that.  Time to take a nap.  There's more drinking to be done tonight and more food trucks to fill my void tomorrow.
