Leavenworth is the last place I expected to stumble upon a trendy Mexican food joint. The atmosphe of this place was EXCEPTIONAL.... And so was the food......and the service.... And the drinks.....
When we went into the restaurant I was surprised to see it was packed (the streets were empty). We were quickly ushered to a seat and our order was taken immediately. There was never a time where we wondered " where is our waiter". They were on top of it- I felt like we were in a 5 star restaurant with a 2 star restaurants pricing. AMAZING!
Another bonus is that there are lots of vegitarian options and they use fresh and organic ingredients. I can't say enough positive things about this place. South will garuntee that we will be headed back over the pass sooner than later. -
Review from Lo L.
Like many other reviewers, I didn't expect to eat Mexican food in Leavenworth, nor did I expect it to be so good! Since we went in a fairly large group (11) a variety of dishes were ordered and everyone was pleased.
We arrived late and stayed a little past closing time, but the staff was patient and did not rush us. Our waitress even asked us if we wanted to split the check, and she did so without any hassle.
Overall it was a pleasant experience and made our trip to Leavenworth all the more memorable.
I can't end the review without mentioning the salsa bar. It's delicious, but as others mentioned- the chips should be complimentary. I suppose you could get full off or just the chips and salsa, but most people are there to eat the yummy entrees too! -

Excellent Yucatan-style Mexican food in the creme-filled Bavarian tourist town of Leavenworth - Yes, Please! The carnitas plate, though not Mayan, is delicious. The fish Veracruz is authentic, and the Poc Chuc--which we didn't order but which we saw being served at several tables--looks fantastic: it's a traditional Mayan dish of seasoned, grilled chicken or pork with habanero-pickled onions and black beans. Also: sweet-potato enchiladas, excellent seafood enchiladas, and fresh (real!) ceviche.
My only quibble is with the guacamole side dish, which is served with flour-tortilla chips. But the service is excellent even when it's busy, and the ambiance is always festive. Summer months there's an outdoor patio that's great, too.
If you find yourself in Leavenworth for more than a day, or if you've been there before and looking for something new, or if you're one of those rare people who visit a German-themed town wanting something OTHER than than bratwurst and schnitzel, then check out South. -

I love this place and try to stop in every time I am in Leavenworth. I LOVE the Mole Sauce and fresh chips. Everything has always been really fresh and the service has always been quick for me. This place is used to crowds but after being here 10 plus times I cant remember any lengthy wait.

Yummm! A great alternative to heavy schnitzel while in Leavenworth! Great tacos (chicken) & delicious rice. Definitely recommend eating here!

Fun place with a great vibe. Food is good but you really go their for the atmosphere and the drinks (which were awesome!) Perfect place for date night, and our service was wonderful.

I just don't understand why people rave about this restaurant. I have been here multiple times and it still remains a 'wild card' for me.
The service is iffy and varies day to day. I seem to either have a awesome server or the exact opposite (which always puts me in a bad mood). The food is not THAT special (Mexican fusion), though it is good. The cocktails are inventive but I don't go out to eat for the liquor. The salsa bar is just various salsas put in large bowls and not at all 'bar-ish' by any means.
If you are a local you know this restaurant is not a big deal, and if you're visiting, you're keeping this establishments doors open. It's as simple as that. -

I struggle here but will give a 4 based on experience number 1. The chicken enchilada was good. The seafood sandwich was great and had more seafood flavor than one would expect from similar style places. The hot chocolate was not good at all, however, they didn't charge us for it even though we had just said we didn't like it. We didn't make a big deal about it so that was nice. The Devil's sauce from the small salsa bar was full of heat and a perfect partner to the chicken enchilada.

We were in Leavenworth for 3 nights and dined at South for two. Their food and appetizers are 'off the hook'. My husband had the mole pork enchiladas and I had the sweet potato enchiladas with corn pudding. YUM! On our last night we had their chip sampler plate and chicken tomatillo soft tacos. We were pleasantly stuffed, but had to have dessert, right? Flan was delicious. The service was top notch on both nights and we enjoyed the ambiance. Our only disappointment: we now have to drive 5 hours to get really great Mexican food! in Leavenworth, of all places.

I have a special place in my heart for South. Something about being able to get some good mexican fare in the middle of a Bavarian themed village filled with brauts, beers and chocolate shops just makes me smile.
They have a salsa bar, which I am always happy to see. Try all the flavors to your heart's content. The food is good, not the most amazing mexican style cuisine I have ever had, but it's tasty. The pork can be a little dry, but they make up for it with a good margarita.
They have live music on some nights, and during the summer the back patio is really nice. Take a break from the Bratwurst and Das Boot and head over to South for a change up on your next visit to Leavenworth. -

I've been here before but it's hit or miss. Remembered great things from my first time but was disappointed recently.
Didn't have any of the drinks (as was recovering from Oktoberfest) and regret it. They looked delicious. Wish I had been there for the happy hour.
However, service was so-so. Slow and sort of seemed to ignore us. The food was spendy but it's on the Leavenworth strip but extra for the simplest things, like rice and beans.
My boyfriend had the very simple burrito. The drunken beans were drunker than most of the people i had seen the night before and left me reeling from their boozy taste.
I had the mole and was disappointed. Mole is one of the hardest dishes to assess but I was overwhelmed. I think if they had given me 2/3 of the sauce they had it would've been better. Could have also used a little more sauce and a little more sweet, it was very very earthy.
Outside seating and salsa bar are the best parts of this place -

A pleasant restaurant surprise in Leavenworth. The food was unique and delicious -- not your typical Mexican food restaurant faire. The pork shoulder was scrumptious.
Don't be fooled by the casual, laid back decor. A hidden gem well worth savoring! -

Another amazing dinner here.
1. Great service. We came at just the right time (5:30pm) and we were seated right away. Waitress came back often to check on us and deliver food (which came out fast). She was friendly and smiling.
2. Delicious food. I ordered the mole enchiladas. Covered in a sweet yet bitter mole sauce, it's the best mole I've had in WA. I wish Seattle had mole like this. My bf also loved his food.
3. Great drinks. Unique. He ordered some spicy, jalapeno margarita. I asked for an iced tea lemonade which wasn't on the menu, but which was simple enough for them to whip up.
4. Salsa bar! With ratings on spiciness levels.
Only complaint is that they charge for tortilla chips.
Man, so good.Listed in: Mexican food!

I had been told to make sure to eat here so I was excited. When we got there we seated next to a table full of kids. That was fine except the parents at the table were not paying attention to their children whatsoever. They kept bothering the wait staff walking by and bumping my husband's chair. It was hard not to become enraged when we were there for a lovely dinner without our kids. The waitress could tell we were irritated and let us move to the bar which was a great move since we got great service from the bartender and had interesting conversation. The pork carnitas were divine. It was hard to pay for chips and salsa but we were on vacation so we splurged.

This place is an amazing hide-out in the middle of Leavenworth! Amidst all of the Bavarian themed tourist traps... I mean "Authentic Restaurants" is this wonderful Latin themed restaurant. I really like Latin food, so to find this place was just wonderful. I have heard from not just one, but TWO local families (who live in Leavenworth) that this is THE place to go for dinner as well. That's a great sign for me and having gone there now, I too agree.
There are too many great drinks on the menu for me to talk about. Personally, I had The Stinger. It was quite wonderful. Its a hard drink to describe, but if you were to take something like a Mojito and add some spice / kick to it, you would "almost" have The Stinger. There are I am sure some further subtleties to it than that, but that's my description for it. I would order it again, but I would also want to try others on the menu as well.
I had the Red Enchiladas. These were just simply amazing. This place falls into the list of my top 10 Latin themed restaurants across the country that I have been to. (Ask me and I can list them, but you will probably be bored.) For under 12$, the portion size is VERY generous as well. I JUST reviewed another Latin restaurant on yelp a few moments ago and their "more than 12$" enchiladas were quite small compared to the portions at South. Nice job!
I would (and have) recommend South to anyone looking for a NON-Bavarian restaurant in the Leavenworth area. In fact, just ditch the Bavarian theme and come here anyways.
The ONLY reasons for not giving 5 stars are that parking in Leavenworth is a HUGE pain. One time we had to park about 8 or 9 blocks away. And, if you don't LIVE in Leavenworth, getting there on either 2 or 97 can be a huge pain as well. Please do go here if you are ever in the area though. -

Loved South. Mexican food in Leavenworth? I was thinking "yeah, right" - but seeing the food on the patio made my boyfriend and I stop in. LOVED it. Wet burritto, even the simple quesidillas were delicious - the tortillas were so fresh.
We had the Red Parrot cocktail which donates $ to rescuing these birds - it was a great cocktail for a great cause.
One of our new favs, and we will definitely hit it up next time we are driving through town. -

Completely average Americanized Mexican food, but a good choice if you're in Leavenworth and are getting tired of sausage and schnitzel. We came here for lunch and sat on the front patio, which allowed for great crowd watching. We both ordered the caipirihna (kind of a Brazilian mojito) with blood orange, which I think was called the Red Tailed Parrot and which the menu said a dollar from each went to saving said parrots. Sweet, I can get my drink on and feel like a do-gooder at the same time! The drink was strong too, so hats off to the bartender.
They charge for chips, which is kinda sh*tty of them, but not totally unexpected in a tourist town. I ordered the green enchilada with chicken, which tasted just like similar dishes I've had at many other Mexican restaurants. I will give them credit for actually spicing the shredded chicken and not just letting the sauce do all the work. I did find it a little strange that all I got was two small enchiladas on a small plate, no rice, no beans, nothing else. The serving was kinda skimpy, even for a lunch item. My husband ordered the seafood enchiladas, which was a mistake. The only seafood we could identify was shrimp, and they were teeny tiny and clearly had been frozen. His dish just didn't taste like much of anything, and he paid more for the privilege of getting less food than I did.
All said, I'd probably come back. Maybe for dinner instead of lunch and most certainly for drinks, except that it looks like they close a little early for real after dinner drinking. -

This is the place to come when you need some good Mexican food and fancy cocktails. They were able to easily accommodate our large group with finesse on the wonderful patio.
We started with orders of chips from the appetizer menu (not included), one flour, one corn. They were housemade, crisp, and delicious. One came with pico de gaio, the other with guacamole. One of our group went inside and brought back selections from the salsa bar.
Our selections of cocktails ran the gamut from Margaritas (South Daisy, Sweet Basil Daisy, and Blood Orange) to draft beer and poured wine to my crazy adult punch (vodka, lemonade, & Dos XX on the rocks). All were great.
I had the Pork Taco Sampler. Each taco seemed tiny, but there were three and together with the rice, beans, and cabbage salad it made a great meal. She had an enchilada and it looked generously filled and disappeared quickly. I heard no complaints and saw empty plates all around the table.

While vacationing in Leavenworth last week, my family and I decided to eat at South. Two of our party of six are/were vegan, and one of them had read that the place was friendly to both meat-eaters and veggie-lovers. So, on our second night in Leavenworth, we loaded up two cars, drove to town, took in a wine tasting and then traipsed (yep, traipsed) over to South. The dishes we ate in the following hour or so were beyond all of our expectations (and it wasn't simply due to four of us being "liquored up," I swear!).
We started things off with basil margaritas and ... another drink I can't remember. (Sorry.) Four of us loved the former, while one wasn't a fan. (One, my dad, refused to even try it. How sad, right?) Personally, I'd suggesting giving it a go if it sounds at all interesting to you. It's like a margarita make with mint, only a bit more ... grassy? I'm sure that doesn't sound very appealing to some of you, but to me it was quite refreshing and tasty. Oh, and that other drink? The person who ordered it loved it. If only I could remember what it was...
Along with our drinks, we ordered the chips and guacamole. Honestly, the chips were to die for. They clearly were homemade -- using flour tortillas rather than corn, I believe -- and were crispy and almost melt-in-your-mouthy. As for the guac: It, too, was great -- although I can't remember why at the moment.
Our meals were similarly satisfying. I had some sort of carnitas burrito in a bowl (sorry, I can't recall the actual name of it) and it was wonderful -- especially the meat. Two other folks at our table had the sweet potato enchilada plate and were very impressed. Sadly, I can't remember what my other table mates ordered. What I do remember is that they enjoyed their meals as much as the rest of us.
All in all, our trip to South was one of many highlights of our time spent in Leavenworth. If you're at all a fan of Mexican/Latin American food, you have to pay this restaurant a visit (or two or three -- honestly, we wish we had dined there more than once during our week-long vacation) during your time in Leavenworth. -

My favorite (and dangerous) way to judge mexican food is to order their ceviche. I can usually tell by the first bite just how prepared they are for their audience. South, sadly, seems to rely on the fact that their food is mostly organic to make up for what they lack in creative menu items.
We ordered a pork burrito, chips and pico, and ceviche. Coffee for me (although the basil marg was calling my name, I had just spent three days drinking alcohol and pretending I was 21 on a camping trip...bummer), he had a pepsi.
Ceviche. They get points for using tangerine (?) instead of lime but the actual pacific cod just tasted super old. And needed salt. Generally lacked flavor. Sigh.....
Chips. Blech! Although I have to admit that chips are such a personal taste. The dude totally loved them while I thought they probably came from Costco. Dark fried corn tortillas with no salt....bland city. Pico - bomb. Fresh, small diced bites of salty heaven. Could use a little kick, although this is easily fixed with a run to their salsa bar which offered up three choices, one of which was so spicy even the dude was scared of it. Impressive.
Pork burrito....ingredients super uneven (hey, they can't all be Chipotle) and the side of the burrito I got (sharing is caring!) simply highlighted the stale flourr tortilla it was housed in. My rule of thumb is if you have to douse it in salsa? It's not good food. South's pork burrito was no exception.
Service? Delightful - from the person who seated us, to the bartender who begged for our business, to the sweet server who was ridiculously attentive. Will I go again? Yes, but only because that damn basil margarita is still haunting me....and the pico. -

South is such a fun and refreshing change from the beer gardens and German fare in Leavenworth!
The food is amazing. The chicken was flavorful and moist. I had the chicken tacos platter and my husband had the monster burrito. The chips and salsa were fresh and addicting! I only wish the salsa wasn't $3 per serving. I tried the basil margarita. It was refreshing and paired well with the food.
Great modern vibe and fresh options. My only critique was the high price. -

One of the few choices in Leavenworth for vegans.. they have street tacos on (what tasted like) freshly made corn tortillas with grilled veggie filling and good salsa choices! A few other options too, if you omit the dairy. TONS of lacto vegetarian options too. Good mixed drink selection too!

Came in here one night for a beer and to watch the Seahawks win over the Saints. I had the Leavenworth IPA and it was really tasty. After awhile we got a little hungry and got some chips and salsa. It came with some really good pico de gallo and got some more salsa from the salsa bar. We got two medium hot salsas, one green an one red. There were also two "really hot" salsas. While good, it was a little too hot for me (I'm a wuss, sue me).
The next morning we came back and this time I had three chicken tacos. It was good but it didnt have that much meat on it. It came with a side of chips and cabbage salad but I think it would be better if they had rice and beans instead.
I think it was a little overpriced, but you should expect it when you come to Leavenworth. I would come here again.

I am from Southern California so it's hard to compare Mexican food from Washington to what I'm used to. But, this restaurant doesn't claim to be authentic Mexican...they have some American fusion. The atmosphere is very warm and inviting, and is what would get me to come back again. I ordered a burrito bowl and it was good, but nothing to write home about. My husband liked that it had lettuce in it so it was kind of like a salad. I also ordered a blood orange margarita and was not a fan. It was missing some sweetness...it tasted salty and a little lacking in flavor. But overall I did enjoy my anniversary dinner here and would go back again.

If your sick of german... because that's mostly what this town is. You should definitely check out South. A fresh outlook on foods varying from Caribbean to Cuban. Far better than Americans cheap tex Mex mix that comprises most generic foods offered at La Hocindas and other Mexican restaurants.
Don't miss happy hour with 1/2 off any alcoholic drink on the menu, as well as $1 tacos. Mon-Fri 4:30-5:30
The mojitos are excellent: The Cuban plate and any taco you can order. Great atmosphere, low key, tequila fun, overall Great! -

This would get 5 stars if you had tables and chairs that didn't freakin move every time you set your glass down on the table! I can't take wobbly tables. Pet peeve of mine! Please invest in sturdier tables or have one of the 15 employees adjust the feet on the tables everynight. I hate eating and hoping my food doesn't slide off and land in my lap or the floor! However this is the best place to eat in Leavenworth! The food was great and the service was too. They looked over staffed. Fix the tables! One of you! If I go back to Leavenworth this place will get a return visit even if the tables wobble. Great food though!

Very good! Peruvian / Salvadorian influenced food is very well done. Everything was tasty and seems to be made from scratch.
The service was fast, friendly and interpersonal.
With appetizers, a bar drink and dinner the price can get a bit up there.

Awesome!
The green sauce is amazing! It's been a LONG time since I've had spicy green (tomatillo) sauce, most of the time it's mild. It was great! I had Tomatillo chicken in my small Mission Style Burrito, and asked for more green sauce on top...yum!!
My husband had the carne asada in the Big, Wet Monster Burrito. That too was awesome. The meat was so tender and the flavors were so good!
The kids got the quesadilla meals. They were really good. Filled with monterey jack cheese, not cheddar or a taco cheese mix.
Of all the places we ate at in Leavenworth, we had the best service and best food here.
Come here! It's so good. -

I think it's really odd that most of these reviews either talk about how great the food is or about the great service. Is it possible that there is a genius chef who could care less about service and manages the place half the week and another genius who loves to serve the customer and is not so interested in food and runs the place the other half?
I'm thinking siblings based on nothing other than my own musings...
Anyway I thought the food and drinks were fab but had just spent a couple days painting a cabin out past Plain so was hungry and so happy that things were being brought to me...
The service was odd and off-handedly neglectful. The lack of chips was weird. We got ceviche which was a great, orange infused original thing but came with about 8 stale chips per order. And was almost taken away before it was gone because the chips were gone. That was weird. Get over yourselves and sling out the chips!
I had a blood orange margarita and won the tequila sweepstakes-mine was way stronger than everyone else's. Yay me!
I had green enchiladas (and a side of beans and rice that was so good that we've gone a quest of trying to duplicate the lime-cilantro rice here at home...) which had good flavor but kinda uncooked corn tortillas. My dining partner had a wet burrito with shredded pork that was the best he's ever had in a restaurant-smoky and perfectly charred. Yum. (He just mentioned that is was sorta cold. I didn't notice as that's not my issue...but it bugged him.)
I'd go back for sure and I'd have another one of those burritos. And the smoky habanero sauce...burny-riffic!
Also the bead decorated cow skulls on the wall were spectacular. I wish I had one. -

Review from Trish R.
A group of 24 swing dancers showed up to South on a Saturday night during the International Dance Festival. South managed to seat us together, albeit outside, at one long table.
The server we had that evening was fantastic. Whenever someone crossed the line between low and high maintenance ("Um...could I get black beans instead of refried??"), her answer was the same: "You got it." She was fast, friendly, and professional.
The food? ¡Excelente! I ordered the sweet potato enchilada plate with zucchini-corn pudding and (yes, I was among the high maintenance yahoos) black beans. Stephen J. ordered the green enchiladas. We split the tortilla soup as an appetizer. Another friend sitting nearby had three different "tiny tacos." There were two basil margaritas ordered nearby, so I got to taste the very interesting concoction. I liked it, another person loved it, and another one of us-well, not so much. I can't help but wonder if part of my South Love this evening was brought by the shot of Don Julio Silver I consumed before the food reached my table.
Over half of us returned to South the next afternoon for lunch before returning to Seattle. The service was rather different this time around, or, as one of us described, "Polar opposite." Our server, while very capable, seemed irritated with us. A few questions were answered rather shortly. Toward the end she asked if we needed separate checks. We replied we could probably figure it out - since we did so the previous evening. Most of us had taken out our credit cards, figured our totals, recorded our card numbers and respective charge needs on the receipt, when she came by the table and said it would be easier for her to bring separate checks than ring so many credit cards on one bill. Well...ok, but that piece of information would have been helpful before we started doing all the calculations. As for the food, we ordered the tortilla soup again, which seemed a little too salty this time around. My soup came with a salad which was quite basic. I asked for the dressing on the side (high maintenance, remember?), and I'm glad I did, as I thought it was an oddly stiff Thousand Island-lookalike accompaniment. Not bad, just different, and not what I expected. The strawberry lemonade was much more strawberry than lemon tasting, but I guess it mattered not, as I slurped the entire beverage down. The best part of my meal, I think was the Almond Joy dessert I ordered and shared with a few others. The reactions to the menu were mostly favorable, though we were generally displeased with the service. I can't help but wonder if part of my South Ambivalence this afternoon was brought by my choice not to consume Don Julio Silver.
The next time I'm in Leavenworth, I would hands-down prefer South food to a big slab of breaded pork, so I'm sure I'll be back. I'll just need to remember to order the Don Julio Silver. -
