This place is cute and spacious and very different for Leavenworth.

Maybe we were here on an "off" night.....I don't know, but here is how it went down.

We walked in, quickly were taken out to the patio to be seated then one of the gal servers said don't seat anyone in this section.  So we were ushered to the back corner with bushes rubbing against us as we sat.  Only to see three other families seated in the other section. Hmm...

Finally....10 minutes later our waitress shows up to take a drink order.  We ordered two margaritas ($7.50 each) that came out in a rather small well drink glass.  It was tasty, but devoid of Tequila and way overpriced.

Pay for chips and salsa?? What? So we ordered them and they came out on a small plate with a small scatter of chips with some pico de gallo.  Rip off!

We split the large house salad which was very different, but very good and a  Big, Wet Burrito with carne asada which was also very good but lacking a decent amount of meat.

The bill comes and we noticed that there was a $2 charge for the carne asada meat that was not mentioned anywhere on the menu.  That is not cool in my book.

All in all, I think this place is overpriced for what you get and would not be in a hurry to come back, but would give it another shot.

I've held off on writing my review for two reasons: 1 I dont want this place to be so popular that I cant get a seat or have to wait too long for my food and 2, I'm just lazy. The choices for food are excellent and you are given a variety of latin american cuisine options. I love the Carne Asada Quesadilla and my wife loves their tacos. We visit Leavenworth a handful of times each year and decide to eat at South exclusively after trying other restaurants along front street. Previous experiences with South would have rated 4.5 to 5 stars.

HOWEVER, to our dismay, South has become very popular. I hand it to the cooks who are working away. The food is still great and gets out on time... but the serving staff is slow and unorganized. My wife and I sat for over 15 minutes wondering if the food that was sitting outside the kitchen was ours or some other Poor Soul's. Unfortunate for us, it was ours. we recieved our food cold. Had the waitress take the tacos back only to return two minutes later with it. Now we know it can take about two minutes to remake the small tacos but the waitress microwaved them and the tacos were soggy. We don't go out and spend a bunch of money to have our food nuked, we can do this at home for free.

This experience changed our mind about South. We will try you again sometime but ended up ordering pizza for the rest of our weekend. I have to drop you to two stars (for now).

I went to South, based on the recommendation of a relative.

I think I am going to have to take his recommendations with a grain of salt. I ordered the standard sized burrito with chicken, which should be a pretty safe choice, right?

Wrong. I don't know what happened, but something in South's burrito really didn't agree with me and I had major acid indigestion for approximately the next 12 hours.

I am a Mexican food veteran. I've eaten everything from taco truck fare in Wenatchee to "nuevo Mex" at Cactus in Kirkland. I have a very high tolerance for spicy foods. Nothing has ever done me wrong like South's chicken burrito.

To their credit, the service was very quick and attentive.

MMMM! So, I'm sorry all of you Germanic/Austriany persons, pero South's tacos kick your Bratwursts' butt!
I've been going to Leavenworth for years and years (uh... 20, embarrassingly enough) and have become very familiar with the bland and overpriced Brat offerings of this faux-Bavarian village. Since my favorite beer garden isn't even around anymore, what's the point!?

I'll tell you: South. South is the point. I mean, there's plenty to enjoy about Leavenworth: it's goofy-lookin', alpiney, a good jumping-off point for summer and winter sports, has good ice cream and more than a few wine tasting rooms. And now, it's got a fusion-Latin American restaurant with reasonable prices, a nice waitstaff, cute decor, and kickass mole.

Yeah, I said KICKASS MOLE! I loved it. Some very recent reviewer claimed that the mole was questionable, but also claimed that it was a "Mexican restaurant" (not true) which should obligatorily serve tortilla chips (ha!). Whatever. If you're evaluating the tastiness of the food here off of Americanized Mexican restaurant standards, then I guess that you should listen to him.

This mole was mild but extremely flavorful, extra chocolatey (but not overly so), and well-balanced enough to serve as a dipping sauce on its own, rather than just a sauce to drown one's chicken bits in. We also ordered the taco sampler plate, and particularly enjoyed the chicken salsa-verde one, the BBQ pork one, the carne asada one... actually all of 'em except for the fish one. The fish pieces in that one were rather small for fried pieces, and in their small size lacked taste, which took away the point of having fish.

All in all, a good place for the pricing.

Don't get the bratwurst.

I don't say that because its bad, only that if you get the brat (which you can get anywhere in Leavenworth), you'll completely miss out on the great selection of latin dishes and you'll regret it big time. South was recommended to us by a friend who used to live in LW and suggested it not just because of its non-bavarian roots, but because the food is fantastic.

I had the "bucket of shrimp" with rice, beans and a romaine salad, Nathan had the tacos.  Both were really great.  We started with fresh guacamole, which I could have eaten with a spoon all by itself.  My shrimp were perfectly cooked with some dried chiles and onion and served over the saffron rice in this cute little tin.  The salad was simple and tasty, and the beans were dusted with crumbled cotija.  Lovely.  Nathan's tacos were yummy too.  Petite handmade corn tortillas with tomatillo-drenched shredded chicken, onion and cilantro.  Guests help themselves to two different salsas, both delicious on the tacos.

We didn't sit outside, but will next time.  They have a great outdoor patio hiding behind the restaurant that reminded me of our time in Cabo.  Really special.

We will definitely be back.

I hated the food.   I found a red hair in my food - both my husband and I have brown hair!   The waitress was very nice, though.   We just won't be back.....

I was in Leavenworth last April for a 20 mile bike ride. The day before my mom (who graciously aggreed to take a roadtrip with me) and I were exploring Leavenworth and it was dinner time. After walking back and forth, past German inspired eateries, I spotted South. I checked out the menu, found some non-meat options, and we went in.

South is a very airy place. I felt like I was sitting outside under a canopy. It has simple decorations which was nice. The staff were nice and helpful.

The one thing that has me a fan for life is the chips and guacamole. Oh my god the chips! They certainly weren't your average tortilla chips. They were thick and hot and practically melted in your mouth and they came in a big ass bowl. My mom thinks they were made out of homemade tortillas and fried. That does make sense. I have never had anything like that in my life and I am already ready to drive back to Leavenworth just for them. For my entree I got the black bean enchiladas. They were less than stellar. The black beans tasted a bit funny to me. I didn't even finish them but I quickly forgot all about them as I kept stuffing my face with the chips.

The best thing about South? The chips. Delicious. They will be like nothing you've had before.

I'm in love! Where has South been all my life? Came here on a bright and early lunch morning with some girlfriends, and we had the best meal ever! I discovered this restaurant from fellow yelpers, otherwise I would have never had known there was even a restaurant like this in Leavenworth! This was definitely quite the find and I can't wait to bring my hubby MJ along next time!

I ordered the Flour chips with guac and the combo taco platter. I highly recommend the flour chips, they came out nice and warm. There is also a complimentary salsa bar with two types of salsa for you to try, a green one and a red one, the red one was the best and it had such good flavor! The atmosphere is nice and was told that there is live music at night during the weekends. I can't wait to come back again!

Came to Leavenworth around Christmas time, and after walking up and down the town for an hour, we finally decided not to get traditional German fare and we'd give South a try. Their drink menu was great. My b/f found his new favorite drink (I forget what it's called) that consists of tequila, jalepenos, cilantro, and lime. Those his 4 favorite things to consume and South combined them all in a drink!  He loved it. My drink was good too. I had the caipirinha.

I thorougly enjoyed my meal (biiiig burrito, had to take half home), but my bf not so much. He got an enchilada and side salad, which wasn't impressive. We had some really interesting nachos with green sauce and some unique chese. it was a new twist on nachos for us.

I would definitely recommend South if you wanna take a break from the German food in Leavenworth!

I found this place to be sub par.  First of all, at a mexican restuarant, you expect chips.  This place is going for a classier feel so I suppose I can forgive that, but my food wasn't all that great.  It was expensive compared to other Latin restaurants and really just wasn't that good.  I ordered their Chicken Mole.  It was served on the bone and had an unusual flavor for mole.  The people I was dining with had better luck with their meals, but  were still put off by the small portions and high prices relative to other latin restaurants.

Please note my rating may be skewed because of the following tidbit:

I like the whole brat/german sausage/saurkraut/beer thing just as much as the next person (okay, maybe a little more), but I can only handle so much of it in a four day period.  I start to go a little nutty after awhile and we won't discuss what happens to the digestive system.  (How do Germans DO this?)

So midway through day three of a four day stay in Leavenworth, we were...well, kind of done with the whole German food thing.  At least for a bit.  I was dying for something a little green in my tummy.  Something, anything.

Enter South, where, the manager told us, "the business plan is to be people's third or fourth meal in Leavenworth".  Smart move because it was quite busy that day - apparently, we weren't the only Oktoberfest-goers who just couldn't do another sausage.

The drink menu looked interesting, but our bodies screamed "WATER" so we stuck with that.  Next time.

We split the ceviche and the chicken tomatillo tacos.  The ceviche was SO good - tart, kicky, ridiculously fresh, and with good sized chunks of shrimp.  The chicken tomatillo tacos were FABULOUS.  Oh my God.  I wanted ten more except that I was ridiculously full by the end of the small meal.

So, when you're tired of Bavarian fare, check this place out.  Clean and fresh tasting and they had the Husky football game on.  If only they'd won.

Awesome surprise!  This is a very good Mexican restaurant with some neat flair.  Make sure you sit in the back with outdoor seating.  And order the carnitas.  Perhaps the best I have ever had.  Came with rice, beans, and tortillas.  Very filling.  And for Leavenworth, this restaurant is a bargain.  Typical meal is between $12 to $15 per plate.  I would definitely come back here again and again.  The restaurant is on the main street, but it is a little east of all the congested area.

We stopped in for a drink (or 3) on Saturday the 14th during the very busy Valentine's/President's Day 3-day weekend. It looked like a great place for a meal: great decor, interesting menu, inventive drinks. We sat at the bar where we were very well served by a kindly bartender, and checked up on by a waitress as well. The Caipirinha is sugary, strong goodness. They also have a little serve-yourself salsa bar which I had some fun with when we ordered some chips.

South's menu is almost identical to Senor Moose Cafe in Ballard. That being said, I LOVE Senor Moose and I LOVE the Puerto Rican/Hispanic flavors they use. So hence, South was good eating. The waitress was new, but very friendly. She mentioned they have a self serve salsa bar, so I made my way to serve thy self and all the bowls were empty. I gently notified her and she was allover it. I had the crab enchiladas and woowee they were spicy!!!!

After my fourth visit to South, I am happy to still report a solid 4 star review. I used to roadtrip to Lake Chelan via Blewett pass, but have switched to Hwy 2 to dine on delicious Mexican food at South (sure, Leavenworth is cute, yet I quickly weary of the Bavarian theme & appreciate another cuisine option!). The house margarita is tasty & strong :-) I wasn't keen on the other unusual specialty drinks (the cilantro & jalapeno concoction was too sweet, the Oaxacan Taxi w/ pineapple & grapefruit juice was just odd). So I stuck with the house margarita & was *hiccup* happy. Had the $2 tacos at the bar and while they are small, they are made with fresh & flavorful ingredients & worth a try. The ceviche is a good value, with a good mix of flavors. Yet my Fav was the chicken enchilada in green sauce. FYI, the self-serve salsa bar features a big bowl of that same green sauce, & our waitress kindly loaded a To Go container of the sauce along with my enchilada leftovers.

This place scored several points with me this weekend, as we were able to bring our dog on the patio!   The food was pretty good this weekend.  We had the pork tacos and Cuban plate, both very good.  The flour chips as an appetizer were really good too.  I still thought the tacos were a bit greasy, but maybe this is just how they are?  Either way, we got to have lunch with our dog, which is really great.
