Please Adopt Pets!!!!!

I never walked through this pound, which is probably a good thing, as it would break my heart, but I adopted my kitty at an adopt a cat event held at Westfield Century City and picked her up at the pounds medical office.

The staff was very nice and seemed to genuinely care about the animals... They actually kept telling me to look at this one cat...they kept saying, she's so sweet so precious, and I could tell that the animal was really something special to all of them... they even named her and they seemed glum as people were only picking the tiny kittens...

Finally I was like, show me the cat already..

They were so right, I picked her up and she nuzzled right into me and licked my chin...the sweetest cat I've ever seen. I was sold in an instant! As I filled out the paperwork outside at a table, Isabel Delphine (my cat) sat like a little princess on my lap without any restraint... precious little kitty!

Also, it turns out my cat had been there for almost 3 months, so I almost wanted to give 5 stars for them giving her a chance to be adopted before killing her, but.................

They told me Isabel was 6 months old, upon taking her to the vet, which by the way you get a free vet visit anywhere within the first 2 days when you adopt a pet, turns out she was closer to a year old, and was severely mal-nurished, she weighed about 3 pounds, less than half of what she should have weighed.... her bones were sticking out everywhere....She also had patches of hair missing and thinning .... I guess love is blind because I didn't even notice all this.....

Anyway, the pound's paperwork claimed to have tested her stool for worms, but they obviously didn't. I got Izzy some worm medication, her shots and fed her the most fattening kitten food, even bought her special cat milk and she more than doubled her weight in 2 months.

I have to minus some stars here because the cat was obviously sick and they just left her that way..which is cruel. If they're not going to kill the animals right away, which is a wonderful thing, you have a duty to make sure they are not suffering... and starvation is suffering.

Anyhow, Isabel is so beautiful now, it's hard to believe it's the same cat...before and after photos, shall be posted!! I highly recommend to everyone. If you want a pet adopt.. it is a very emotional experience to save the life of an animal.... and there are so many amazing loving little animals that need a good home.

Just be aware that you may have to get them checked out at the vet as parasites and stuff are very common, but don't let that keep you away... the treatment for that kind of common stuff isn't that expensive but just make sure you get your pet checked.

When I was looking for a cat, I visited several city shelters, and this one was where I adopted my cat. At all the city shelters, I found the employees and volunteers to be helpful and kind, and really interested in getting the pets adopted. If you were looking in a cage, they'd quickly offer to let you hold the animal.

I found the South L.A. shelter to be larger than most, in a nice modern building (painted bright colors, with areas for families to be with the animals). It also had a larger selection the others, and often had litters of kittens.

The employees are not very helpful, but you will undoubtedly find a pet you'll want to take home.  Actually, you will probably find MANY pets you will want to take home--there are literally rooms full of cats, dogs and other species--that you will have a tough decision on your hands.  I had a tough time picking out my kitten because there were so many that were just as adorable.  Just remember that all animals have to be fixed before leaving, so if the animal you choose isn't fixed, you'll have to return the next day to pick it up after the surgery.

This is the second pound I've been to in my life. Its huge, and has tons of dogs. Most of which are larger breeds, Pit bull, rottweiler, etc etc, but also some gorgeous sweet, wonderful dogs that need your help.
The place smells terrible, and the dogs often have kennel cough, but such is life. Come in, walk around, pick a dog and the people will let you walk around with them, check them out etc.
This is your opportunity to find a wonderful dog, that will appreciate and love you!
It can be hard on you to see this many dogs like this, but please come adopt one.

Park streetside, and walk in, just walk around, the dogs are in split cages, some with females some male. Cats and rabbits are elsewhere in the area.
Don't get freaked out, some of these dogs look mean as can be... but hidden in there are some sweet sweet dogs who have no reason to be there other than their owners mistakes. Find the one you want to look at and let the people working there know. They can be less than kind, but some of them are very nice people. Make it happen, Pound dogs can be the best dogs!

There's always a huge assortment of lonely, homeless dogs here. You can walk through the kennels just beware that they tend to be more scared of you than you are of them. It does smell but what else can you expect from a shelter that's overrun with unwanted dogs.

When you walk in they have the puppy section, then their rabbits and cats but their biggest section is dogs. Employees are helpful and they do try to persuade you into adopting. It's only because they know that if these dogs don't get adopted then they won't be around for long.

If you can't adopt then you can drop off newspapers, old towels or blankets. They are always in need and welcome any kind of donation.

I'm a volunteer and while no shelter is perfect, I've come back every week for a year :)    In fact, if you're interested in adopting a littertrained rabbit, start at rabbitmatch.org.

This is the highest kill shelter in Los Angeles.  There are so many diamonds in the rough in there- don't be scared to go.  The workers are helpful and will help you find the right dog/cat/rabbit for your situation.  My Dalmatian came out of there and she is the best dog I've ever had!

My boyfriend and I fell in love with our dog Dixie here!  Yes, it smells and yes, it's dirty, but it's the shelter, not Pet Love in Beverly Center.  You can go to the LA City Animal site and view pix of dogs and cats that need a home.  We're partial to this one since it's close to South Central LA and those animals may have had it harder than other ones :(

Shelter a bit run down. Rough neighborhood. Dog we rescued was healthy except for tapeworm.

Typical LA City employees working half as hard as they could.
