My husband and I are very pleased with the level of care our three children (ages 5, 3, and 8 months) receive at SEBPMG. Their pediatrician is Dr. Unson and he is very attentive, knowledgeable, thorough, and kind. I've had no problems scheduling same-day appointments, which is a relief to a worried parent whose child has been sick or injured. Their weekend urgent care hours are also VERY appreciated. Dr. Friedkin has seen two of my kids on a Saturday morning, and he is such a joy to talk to -- pediatrics is truly his calling. When Dr. Unson has been unavailable for our regular appointments, we were scheduled with Dr. Alpert, who was wonderful with my children, as well.
I can't say enough about their staff -- they are friendly, caring, and patient, and you can tell that they love children. It is rare for us to sit in the waiting room for long. The medical assistants who take the children's stats (temperature, weight, etc.) at the start of the appointment set a positive tone for the rest of the visit, which calms my children and makes them less apprehensive. And the kids always look forward to their sticker and sugar-free lollipop at checkout. =)
I decided to check this clinic out after I heard many great things about it. BUt to my surprise, it was a horrible experience. Like many other reviews, I was in the waiting room for a long time. We were finally called, but on mid-way the MA asked us to wait for a little while and she put us in a sick patient waiting area. After I saw the sign, I asked to wait outside in the well patients room. There I waited again for another 15 minutes. After we were ushered to a room, the MA didn't wash her hands before she touched my girl. I asked her to and of course, she gave me a look. There we waited another 20 minutes for the doctor to come. I asked the MA to re-schedule us as we were already late for other appointment. MA kept saying the doctor would be coming in and asked me to go to the checkout counter to ask for an appointment. THe checkout counter was handled by 1 person and there were 6 patients in line. Fine, the doctor finally came in. Her name was Dobbs. SHe was nice, and thorough. She explained to me some of the stuff about the flu shot, but was too caught up with talking, she forgot to examine my daughter. I had to remind her. It took her around 5 minutes to see us.
THought we could finally leave for our following appointment. BUt no, we had to wait in the lab waiting area to get a flu shot. THere were only one person who was giving injections, and the room was full of kids. I say, around 15 to 18 kids.
The most stupid thing was the checkout point. I waited so long in line to check out just for tHe lady only collect my papers!!! I was like that's it? They really need to adopt a better system.
I should have known better not to check this place out. Every time I call the office, I was put on hold for like 10 to 15 minutes! It's all about waiting if you come here. Just imagine having a sick and whiny kid and waiting for this person and that person. Fortunately, we were only here for the flu shot!
The only good thing I can say is that they do have a well patient and sick patient waiting room. I was impressed when I walked in. But later on, I saw a sick kid waiting in the well patient room. So what difference does it make? And we were also put in a sick patient lab. waiting area when we got in!!!
Avoid this place at all cost! I wouldn't have came in if the clinic I go to regularly hadn't run out of the flu vaccine!
Not a bad place if you are in Fremont in need of experienced pediatricians for routine matters. Dr. Patrick Burke is awesome, five stars to him (though we have only one experience). However, we left this practice because the referral desk staff is very incompitent. They took for ever to send a fax to a specialist when my son needed one urgently. They sent one of their referrals to us by mail instead of sending it to a specialist at Oakland's Childrens Hospital.
After reading reviews posted by fellow yelpers, I am shocked to hear that so many people have had long waits during their visits. I felt compelled to write this review in hopes that people would see that this pediatric clinic is a great place. Anywhere you go, you may have to wait, it's part of life. I hope that people will take this into account when they are dealing with appointments whether here, at the vet's or in line at the grocery store...
I have 2 children, one is 2 1/2 years and the other is 3 months. We see Dr. Dugoni and she is absolutely wonderful! I have never met a doctor so compassionate and knowledgable. She is absolutely the most wonderful doctor I have ever encountered.
When my first son was younger he had some issues with weight gain and GER. She was patient and knew what to do to help us through this situation.
On several occasions I have called and left messages and she always returns my calls. I have never had a day go by that a message I left wasn't returned. In fact, there are times when she's been there all day and still calls me back at 6:30 or 7:00 at night. She truly is a doctor that works hard and cares about the health of her patients and the concerns of parents.
On occasion, Dr. Dugoni has not open appointments (this only happens occasionally and when I have called in asking for a same-day appointment). When this happens we see Dr. Burke - another stellar doctor at SEBPMG.
I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this practice and I would recommend them to anyone and everyone.
Been taking my kids here for the last 2 years, every single visit is a painful wait. You could get there an hour before your appoinment, or an hour after, it does not matter, you will always wait for close to two hours before being seen by a doctor. You won't get to see your doctor every time you ask for an appointment. My kids see theirs once a year, otherwise, different doctors have been appointed for them.
Their billing suck big time. Once i called to cancel my kids' flu shot appointment almost 24 hours before, well, gotta say 22 hour to be exact, and I got the bill months later charging me $25 each kid for not canceling the appointment 24 hours prior to the date. I called and got transfer to many places, office, billing, receptionist....etc..and for months still can not resolve the matter. Finally i had to show up at the office and raise my voice to get those charge dropped. My kids have HMO insurance which is hard to change their doctor, otherwise would be gone for a long time now.
This is a follow-up review to my post below. I received a 'compliment' from a daughter of someone who works there, and defended their practice. So I'll admit that I am only one father with two young sons that were looking for a new doctor, because Fremont Peds off Auto Mall became a Kaiser. I'm sure there are long-time families who get wonderful service there, so we probably got there on either an off-day or training day.

My negative rating lies with the front office practice of South East Bay Pediatric Medical Group itself. We were newly-transferring patients with 5 and 8 year-old kids. For our first appointment we decided to arrive 30 minutes ahead of schedule, to allow for the deluge of new-patient paperwork. The paperwork was submitted 15 minutes prior to our appointment, so we patiently awaited our appointment time. As the time came and passed, we witnessed other patients being called ahead of us, although they arrived after we submitted paperwork. After another 20 minute wait, we were asked to have our child disrobe in an exam room. Shortly after disrobing, they realized they needed the room for someone else, so we were ushered into the hallway. My child was in a slightly disrobed state in the hallway for another 20 minutes. I know most sensible parents would have left by then, but I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. So nearly an hour after our scheduled appointment time, we were ushered into what we understood was going to be our exam room with Dr. Friedkin. After another 15 minutes of waiting (with no one checking in on us) I decided to pick up my child and head for the front office to get back my co-pay and medical records. There was no way I was going to subject my family to this type of overbooked medical practice.
By the way, the waiting room was relatively empty upon our arrival, but was standing-room-only when we hastily departed.
The only reaction from the hosting nurse and office manager was to shrug off our dissatisfaction, without so much as an apology. I was actually expecting a phone call from Dr. Friedkin to express his dismay at the situation, but we haven't heard from him either.
Overall, this is a typical suburban medical clinic that serves the masses well. If you are well-read on how to choose a doctor's office, you certainly will not choose this practice. Their front desk staff was cold and certainly not willing to go the extra distance to make you feel wanted. I was dressed in standard business attire, and certainly not disheveled looking or disrespectful, so I cannot understand the lack of caring looks in their staff's eyes. I have many good friends that are physicians, and they have been appalled to learn of our story with the South East Bay Pediatric Group.
However, if you're used to the hour-long waits for medical service and lukewarm (at best) staff, enjoy your time with this clinic.
SEBPMG knows what it's like to care for children - they have walk in hours in the morning, weekend hours (even Sundays), and a nurse available by phone. I love the fact that they have two lobbies - one for sick children, one for healthy children to keep cross contamination to a minimum. Dr. Sara Dobbs is our pediatrician and after going through several pediatricians, she is definitely the best we've ever had. They are located across from Washington hospital and next door to a lab - which are both convenient when you need to shuffle to either one.
Dr. Dobbs and Dr. Unson see my children. They are top notch, both of them. They are so caring and attentive, and seem to love your kids as their own. The first visit was not super, because Fremont Pediatric Group on Boscell was bought out by Kaiser, and they were deluged, but subsequent visits, and there have been many, have been a pleasure. My 2 year old even LIKES to come here. I cannot recommend the docs. more highly. We have also seen Dr. Burke when the regulars weren't available and he was equally wonderful. Only drawback? The checkout desk lady acts like you are bothering her and like she just ate some bad sushi and you are a turd on her shoe. Other than that, no problems whatsoever. They take you back to your room quickly, and the docs spend all the time you need, they aren't rushed, and yet they are on time. Good job!
I've been happier with these doctors than any others we've seen. I have four children now at the practice (WIth Dr. Unson, Dr. Friedkin, and Dr. Burke). The office is cheerful and friendly, the doctors are patient, involved, and good listeners. I've never felt rushed here, and I'm grateful- I've had so many doctors pop in, take a temperature, make a pronouncement, and dash off a prescription- and I can happily say this has never happened. This is a responsible, committed practice, and the doctors always seem to have time to talk, even over the phone.
