Review from Don U.
Yorba Linda, CA
Have worked with Brian and Will on two roof repairs. For the most recent repair I obtained estimates from two other companies and South County offered me a much better price for the same repair. After the repair was completed, the site was left clean with no damages to plants and I was provided pictures of the repair. They also provided me a 3 year warranty which is more than other companies I've dealt with. Overall the experience was good and I will probably call them first in the future.

***** CONCLUSION: WHO WE GONNA CALL? *****
South County Roofing delivered as promised, exceeding our expectations. The leak sources were FINALLY identified and repaired, verified in the last rain. The job was clearly-articulated (verbal base estimate, potential pitfalls, etc. and complete written contract), without hassle or issue, within a reasonable time frame and price range, warrantied for 3 years, and educational (questions to any employee involved were patiently answered in-depth).
We primarily interacted with owner Brian Atkins, a pleasant fountain of confidence, knowledge, clarity, and professionalism, and personally involved in: visiting, analyzing, and offering free estimates; leak detections; and engendering leadership, integrity, and customer satisfaction.
They've earned our trust and future business. Thanks again!
***** ADVICE: LESSONS LEARNED *****
If you read no further or employ other roofers, you'll likely benefit from one thing: invest a few minutes perusing their website's "Consumer Info" page, with suggestions, facts, and considerations to empower/protect you in the process of roofer screening, contracts, jobs, etc.
Also, when storms slam roofers with calls/jobs, many can't keep up. We got faster response (and thus recommend) filling-out and submitting a request form via their site's "Contact Us" page (presumably with clearer/complete information vs. a voicemail message).
***** PREVIEW: IGNORANCE IS AN ABYSS *****
Help for leak detection, repair, or replacement often involves this choice:
(1) continue to remain ignorant of and risk being ripped-off by amateur poseurs (as we did for years, wasting MORE money with each new contractor's same failure as well as the same repairs to the worsening internal damage; or
(2) find a professional contractor like South County Roofing (as we did a few weeks ago, with a record of experience, achievement, and expertise - possessing a loyal team, straightforward communication, customer service-orientation, educating enthusiasm, and a focus on customers' long-term interests).
***** INTRODUCTION: IF YOU TRY SOMETIMES ... *****
After years of failed leak repairs, increasing internal damage, and frustration with various roof repair contractors, serendipity led us to these folks: I saw a company truck with the simple message "We Fix Leaks". I approached an employee, peppering him with several pointed questions - later learning that he was the owner.
He dispelled errant claims by others with whom we'd dealt or hired. After answering my questions, he: explained his company's philosophy, processes, and prices; showed digital pictures taken on a job (to document and give to customers); and offered to stop by later to give a free estimate - noting it might be a couple weeks before starting due to being unusually backed-up. I was convinced they were right for the job and worth the wait.
Next, my wife needed convincing, having endured the bulk of frustration and cost. I related my experience and we checked out their website (she was encouraged). Later, on a related topic, I googled [+"concrete tile" +"roof maintenance" +sealing], clicking the top result. The site was http://AllExperts.com; a similar question has been asked, and it was answered by none other than Brian Atkins, one of over 900 roofing questions he'd answered in 3 years (with high-quality ratings) while contributing as a volunteer (helping sway my wife).
***** OVERVIEW: LEAKS-B-GONE! *****
Our chimney was the source of most problems, creating other leaks down-slope and below; prior roofers had stopped short. As a precaution, the entire chimney and area above was redone, extending the job and cost - a prudent choice. [A neighbor with the same issue stopped by while the deck was exposed; he asked Brian to repair his roof.]
Our master-bathroom "canopy window" had roof leaks around it; one corner was tough to access and had rotted lap boards/ fascia and loose tiles. These leaks ran behind indoor walls, causing drywall dry rot. The lone roofer, foreman Roberto, was running out of daylight to complete this 1-day job. He performed nice carpentry work, and primed/painted/replaced the rotted boards, also cutting new tiles to replace odd-shaped fits that had fallen. He persisted and finished an impressive job.
Our only minor complaint involves refuse. Cleanup was good all 3 days, but our thick, spindly, St. Augustine grass masked some nails, tacks, and smaller pieces of mortar, tile, and felt. I was happy to deal with these, but wonder if a tarp or something similar could have been used. It's likely neither sensible nor safe to bring cleanup bags on the roof during work vs. somewhat blindly tossing debris over the roof ledges (some stuff falls beyond one's control). On a team, this may be less of a problem. Occasionally, large pieces of felt, boards, or tiles would land in or on garden trees, shrubs, and plants - even a little on the other side of a close-by neighbor's backyard fence. -

I used these guys recently. All in all it was a good experience. There were some time lapse issues because the roofer had a gall stone or something issue on the second day, so it took almost a week before they could come out. But otherwise they got the job done. I'm holding off on the 5* until we get the heavy rains. Price was fair too. I'd recommend them.
*updated* it rained like a mofo down here earlier this week and I was out of town for a few days. I came back expecting the worse even after the roof repair, but things were perfect. 5*s! -

I called and left a total of 4 phone messages and an email over a 10 day period in mid-January but didn't get a single response. Perhaps they went out of business, or they have too many customers and don't need any more business.

Updating my review.... Brian came back to the job within a week or so of my phone call and concluded that we needed the next option he had originally listed during his initial visit last year. The "lone roofer" mentioned in Shain's review, spent most of the day tearing out, re-building and even re-fabricating some new flashing for around the chimney and roof line. Final price was a little more than originally quoted due to the fact that this new flashing had to be made. But when you're dealing with repairs such as this, you don't want to take chances with cheapo companies. Even so, the price was great and more than reasonable for the work done.
I am very relieved and happy to have found such a good company, when reliable contractors are few and far between. I have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone who wants a job done right.
I need to have some drywalling repair work done now and Brian kindly provided me with the name of someone he highly recommends. You can't get a better contact than that. I'll be back to let you know how that goes.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

My friends, there comes a time in most people's lives where one must learn to put aside their childish toys and embrace adulthood. We must ultimately leave the bars, nightclubs, and hip new restaurants to the next generation, and realize our place as the vanguards of home renovation and family buffets. As I stand at the forefront of this personal revolution, I cannot help but shed a nostalgic tear even as I gaze upon the shining hill of impending parenthood.
Blah blah blah. Yeah, it's not hip, but still, Yelp saved us a bundle on recommending this particular roofer.
Previously, our adventures in Yellow Page Randomly Chosen Roofing had been a $1000+ debacle. We've had a leak in the roof for years and the last guy didn't do crap. We were not looking forward to more of the same, but with a kid on the way it's time to get our act together, so we turned our attention here. Lo and behold, one company in the area was reviewed, and lo and behold, that one company has cost us less and FIXED THE DAMN ROOF.
Even though they're in Lake Forest and we're all the way up in Costa Mesa, Bill (owner? Main roofing dude? Either way, he's the guy we dealt with) had no problems coming up, even working around our crazy-ass schedule. First time out, spent a lot of time in the attic and on the roof, trying to pinpoint the problem. Second time out, resealed a bunch of tiles that appeared to be the culprit, for $350. Unfortunately that wasn't quite it, so third time out he ended up ripping up a large portion and completely redoing it. Worked noon to just past dusk, but the job got done, and subtracted the money we already paid from this bill (minus materials, of course). I feel that the final cost, about $850, was more than fair for the amount of work and effort put in, and the fact that after multiple tries with different companies, the leak was finally solved. The recent rainstorms have proven the new roofing to be true time and again.
If/when the time comes when we finally have to give in and get the whole house reroofed, or if another leak springs up, I would not hesitate to call South County Roofing again. Honest, reliable, flexible, and Yelp-approved! -

South County Roofing is an excellent roof repair company. They came to our house and did a complete inspection, complete with captioned photos, gave a fair estimate, came out and did the work promptly, and sent another set of photos showing what they did. For roof repairs, these are my guys!

I want to commend Brian and South County Roofing for fixing a roof leak near my chimney. After I contacted them, Brian promptly came out to my house at the scheduled time. He inspected the leak, explained the repair process and give me a written estimate. I agreed to the job. He said he would call me in about a week to schedule the repair once he had the materials. It was actually about 10 days later when he called back ready to perform the work. The repair was done as stated and he actually did some extra work to do the job right, replacing some broken tiles that he found, which he had to run down to the local home improvement store to obtain. Brian was willing to absorb the cost of the extra work and materials (since it was not included in the estimate) but I was appreciative of his efforts to do a thorough job and I was glad to reimburse him. Since the repairs were completed a few months ago, a series of storms has passed through with no further leakage.
