So the ranger was nice enough to let me drive in and around the campsite to check out the location for potential visits. The RV spaces were shockingly large complete with a sandy/dirt that doesn't look like it would destroy the insides of the trailer or tent, depending on what you consider camping. The views were nice, obviously facing the ocean, and the other side is wedged up against the fence of the highway which could pose as a problem for road-noise if you're looking for a quiet relaxing place to be. And to what I saw, I didn't see any source of hookups so it looks like everyone is self-contained and dry-camping. Don't show up in your RV expecting to take a shower in it because it won't happen.
Looks like a pretty nice park though. Didn't catch a glimpse on how much the fees are but I am sure they can't be too high, but then again, it is north county...
Carlsbad Campground is a great place to go with a group of friends or family. Each spot is seperated by large bushes and trees to help with the privacy. Only 8 people per spot allowed and 3 cars max. They arent to strict with the amount of people you have so if your over by 1 or 2 people dont worry to much. Since parking is so tight you can park at the nearby Ralphs shopping center and carpool over.
Get there early to make sure you get a primo spot. There are two sides to camp, bluff side or street side. I much more prefer the bluff side for scenery sake. Each spot has a fire pit and picnic table too.
Make sure you bring and keep your food in a animal proof container and dont forget to put it in your car at night because the squirrels will get it. They arent afraid of people either so dont think they wont hop up on the table where you might be eating your hot dog and chips to steal a chip or two, or even climb into your tent with you, like when one hopped into Jessie's and couldnt find its way out.
Bring some good reading material for during the day just because there arent to many places to hike except down to the beach. The campgrounds arent like the usual up in a forrest somewhere with tons of trails.
I will be camping here again in the near future.
If you don't camp normally or have an RV this would be okay. Of course the beach is lovely. It isn't the greatest for tent camping. Tons of ants and tons of squirrels. If you surf it is a good spot to come. Walking distance to buy smores ingredients at Ralphs about 2 blocks away and starbucks, riteaid, subway, pizza.
Seaside camping on a bluff is the main attraction to this camp site. The view is breathtaking overlooking the grand Pacific Ocean. South Carlsbad Beach is also a popular surf spot however not the best for beginners. San Elijo in Cardiff is better for the novice as it features reef breaks as opposed to beach breaks which you find here. This beach sells-out during the summer but they take reservations up to a year in advance. some of the sites don't have an ocean view so again reserve early. The lots are a decent size suitable for RVs.
Other activities include: swimming, skin diving, fishing and picnicking. The beach is only accessible via stairs that lead down to the beach. Not the best place for the physically impaired as the stairs are long unless you don't mind just chillin' on top. There is also a surf camp here I believe in the summer at the end of the site.
There aren't any shops within close walking distance. However about a mile away you will find the gamut of shops you pretty much buy anything you may need. I guess for some that isn't that far.
