I went to the Trailer Park last Thursday for a "Home For The Holidays" Event to benefit the families of the "Fort Hood Tragedy" and I am happy that 10% of the money I spent went to those families....
Holy Cacao was serving "Liquid S'mores" spiked with Dripping Springs Vodka and 1921 Tequila! And, I am proud to say I ate Cake Balls:)
torchy's is alright, but i'll never forgive them for shutting down shuggies.
for shame.
where else am i supposed to get amazing green chili fries, or pastrami ON MY BURGER?!?
for a hipster taco, i'd rather hop over to izzoz. torchy's is decent, but the pricing is pretty silly for a town that has plentiful dollar tacos all over the place.
in general, this spot is alright, and the parking is pretty decent.
Food was spectacular. My wife and I kept laughing at the thought of the food being so good for such a venue / atmosphere.
Highly recommended (although you may want (2) taco's for your meal):
Baja Shrimp Taco - $4/taco
Green Chili Pork Taco - $3.50/taco
Torchy's Chips & Green Chili Queso - $4.95
We will definitely be going back.
Whoever said trailer parks are a bad thing, obviously didn't come to the South Austin Trailer Park & Eatery.
Prices were good. Food was great. I had the fajita plate, which was awesome, but need to try the tacos everyone keeps raving about someday. Loved the cool seating area outside. The only downside with that is that, being outside can also mean a some bugs flying here and there. That's the only downside, but really its not that bad.
Its a perfect place to have a a chill dinner, with great food, without cleaning out your wallet.
LOVE IT - do yourself a favor and work your way thru all of the named tacos before going to the fajita plate/burrito/bfast taco route. Not that the other stuff isnt good, but the named tacos are put together VERY thoughtfully. My favs are the baja shrimp and the trailer trash (trashy).
Gotta love the trailer park too, BYOB!!! But I miss Shuggies...
Okay, food in a trailer park? Yes! and it's great. Thanks to a friend who's a student at UT Austin, we were able to enjoy a casual, palatable and cheap meal. I ordered a sumptuous carnitas taco from Torchy's Taco (the best taco I've ever had), and a coke in a classic coke bottle. Great experience!
The Baja Shrimp Tacos at Torchy's still are the best tacos I've had in Austin (I'm a transplant and still searching).
It's always a fun place, the atmosphere is adorable, and it's very easy. I hear the barbacoa tacos are delicious as well.
Except for the fact that it was freakin' hot when we went, and there's not much to keep you cool when the tacos heat you up, so bring some ice cold beers (which you CAN bring your own cooler, 12 pack, whatever!) we had an excellent food experience!
Had the fried avocado taco, and jerked chicken taco with mango salsa... YUM!!!!!
Brought my kids, who enjoyed the bench swing and dessert trailer (awesome smores packs, shave ice, and cupcakes!) but they also roamed the grounds around the picnic benches and enjoyed the quesadillas and chips.
Very casual down-to-earth place to eat with friends or family, parking is on the lot, I imagine if it's real busy you may have to find some elsewhere. Once the weather cools down, you'll want to stay and hang out at the smore pit, or just enjoy the tunes.... not live music the day we went, not sure if they offer it.
Grab a bite for dinner, then head over to the Downtown Bridge to see the bats at twilight.
Wow, amazing tacos at Torchy's. Had a Green Chili Pork and Fried Avocado Taco. The pork taco won for most amazing flavor in a taco ever. The fried avocado - while novel just didn't have enough flavor for me.
But WHOA hold up, the queso! Are you kidding me? AMAZING. I'm a queso convert. Cali, west-coast girl meets Texas boy who introduces me to queso. I thought, "this is such ridiculousness and sooo bad for you" little did I know how so so good it tastes! But the Torchy's queso? Best, hands down I've ever had. I could eat it every day until my first heart attack and still be happy I did.
Loves the variety at this really awesome place. I love going here on a date night during the cold weather and having a warm cup of cocoa and some mini goat cheese burgers! Yum!!!!!
Cruised by for dinner around 6:30 last night, but there was only Torchy's there? Kind a bummer.
Ended up eating elsewhere but came back for dessert at Treat. I was tempted by moonpies and other goodies, but I got the Smore's. OH. MY. GOD. I didn't know what to expect but was blown away. tucked into a chinese takeout container was a whole packet of graham crackers, an entire Hershey's chocolate bar, sticks, wet naps, and the best part: two homemade marshmallows. I got butterscotch and chocolate chipoltle.
The way-cool- gal who was running it lit an actual fire pit and I proceeded to have an orgasmic experience crafting my smores. Un-friggin-believable. I had marshmallow and chocolate all over me. Awesome.
I would give this place 6 stars if I could. No joke.
Having vacationed in a double wide trailer in Port Isabel, TX for the better part of my life, I can guarantee this is not a real trailer park style. Too young, too hip, too many teeth.
HOWEVER, its a fantastic concept. Gone are the days spent driving up and down streets trying to find "that one trailer that sells that stuff". Eating off a truck, a trailer, any kind of mobile eatery has its own special flavor. The food is strangely better -- either b/c they dont change the grease out or because of the gastrointestinal adventure.
Regardless, I will bring people here because its fun and kitschy and has a variety of offerings that are all pretty damn good. It gets four stars for concept, food flavor, and for showing dazed and confused last night with byob and lawn chairs. Now THATS some trailer park fun.
1. My dog is welcome.
2. BYOB
3. Torchy's plus Shuggies
4. Gravel driveway, dirt floors, shade trees
5. Shuggies sells chicken-fried bacon!
I am loose with my love for South Austin!
Exceeded my expectations! The name, "Trailer Park Eatery," didn't really create images of grandure...
I finally took the opportunity to hit up Torchy's. I had a fried avocado taco and the green chile pork taco. Both were tasty and not too greasy. I also had the chips and queso, which I actually rank above the tacos.
My fiance had the Rambler burger from Shuggie's complete with deep fried bacon. That's right, DEEP FRIED BACON. Ridiculous!!
I thought the atmosphere was fun and laid back - very "Austin-y." I especially enjoyed the smores area, which I'll have to try out at some point. I enjoyed TPE overall, but the parking can get a little congested/complicated.
Another plus - you can bring your dog and BYOB. We didn't do it, but we saw people that did both. I also consider this the first trailer park restaurant row in Austin since it was formed before the SoCo madness.
I liked it better when there was seating in the old car bays, but whatever. Still the coolest spot in Austin hands down.
BYOB, dog friendly, lots of parking, convenience store across the street. Anyone who can't get into the vibe of the park and the food needs to move back to Dallas.
Unfortunately I didn't get to eat here (I was full from an earlier lunch), but the friends I were with did have lunch. One friend ordered from Shuggie's and had a veggie sandwich. She loved it. My other friends ordered from Torchy's and had some tacos that looked wonderful.
I love the concept of the trailer park theme where you walk up and order from the window, and then have your pick of picnic tables to sit at. I'm all about outdoor things. I wish I would have known you could bring your own booze. Next time I'm in Austin and go here, I will!! :)
Definitely the place to be this time of year.
And it showed with a ridiculously long line at Torchy's today.
BUT, there are two other trailers to explore!
Shuggies had little to no line (note: there are separate lines, despite what it may look like sometimes), so we opted for burgers today.
The burgers look good, but I'm a vegaquarian, so I had to pass on what looked to be awesome burgers. I got the vegetarian sammich. Panko-crusted portabellos, sauteed spinach, roasted red peppers, green chiles, avocado and some kinda sauce.
The sammich was good. Not the best I've had, but pretty darn good. The real problem here was that the way they served it you couldn't have more than maybe two of those ingredients in your mouth at one time. It's served in a half-sliced roll, which turns your sammich from a horizontally eaten creature to a vertically challenging mess. I'd like to know what it all tasted like together in my mouth. Yeah, I know what I just said, get your minds out of the gutter!
ONION RINGS! They were damn good. They were the crumbly kind, not the giant fluffy kind. The sauce they came with was tasty with a but of spice. The crumbly nature of the rings didn't make for good, clean dipping, but heck the crumbles tasted just fine by themselves in the sauce! Nice.
LAH-DEE DAH & TREAT
This is a newer addition, where you can go inside to look around the cute little airstream that sells unique gifts, artwork, and plants that you apparently have to work really hard to kill. Maybe I should get some of those. But I know my cats would put forth plenty of effort on my part.
AND on the outside of the trailer, you can order Campfire Smores (for two or four), and that means they'll build you a fire to cook them over! Neat! They also boast the best pralines in town. I was too full from my Chocolate Malt, or I may have taken that challenge.
Oh, and they sell Advil, Condoms, Brownies, and something called the Banana Blender Surprise (a Moon Pie and an RC Cola), which I think you have to be a Houstonian from the right era to really appreciate that joke.
Heck with that combination of things, you could have a rock star weekend!
In any case, I'm rambling, so I'll stop here.
But I'll be back! With booze and ready for my Moon Pie!
When you love a taco, set it free. If you comes back to it, it was meant to be. Frankly, I love Torchy's for 8 months out of year. Then maybe another 60 hours on top of that between the hours of 8-10 am/pm in May & September. I just love A/C more than you Torchy, but you let me wander b/c you know I'll be back. And I'll bring my friends too.
There is not, I repeat, NOT a pork taco in this universe better than Torchy's. It's the kind of good where when juice runs out of the taco onto your face, you'll swipe it with your finger instead of a napkin so you can suck your finger. Baja Shrimp, quite good as well, and a favorite of DH's...along with pretty much every other taco there. Whether breakfast or lunch, and despite their inconsistencies on structure (eh, maybe you'll get some pickled onions today, maybe some extra cheese, who knows, it's a surprise!), we just love this place. Their queso is that special, unattainable recipe that you chase your whole life in your own kitchen, shaking your fists at the Velveeta gods for failing you again. But that's okay, b/c Torchy's brings it to you at multiple locations around the city.
I do have a bit of a dysfunctional relationship with Torchy's, however. First, they keep reinventing the Trailer Park. We had the covered patio which we managed to really dig the one time, which has of course been closed ever since. No one can tell us why, so we're stuck sitting next to the road, choking on exhaust and just waiting for that inevitable moment when one of the yahoo's that go 50 mph on 1st St takes us out. Seriously, makes my butt crawl sitting with my back to that road. Second, they brought us Shuggies, who made a freakin' fine shrimp poboy. Next visit, it's down to burgers. Then Shuggies goes away..then it comes back..then it has a FANTASTIC brunch (oooh, donut holes how I love your sugary paradox)..and then gone all together. Fickle bastards. La-Dee-Da appears, kind of looking like a meth trailer parked in your freaky neighbors back yard. They think s'mores is a grand idea, (pfft, who doesn't), until they light the fire pit up and half the tables get smoked out. The seating arrangements themselves pull a little Poltergeist action on us, they're here...no they're over there, no wait, they're over yonder now. Carol Ann! In really brilliant moments, they thought we'd all prefer to scorch our brain pans in the sun and leave the tree coverage for the metal.
And of course, there's the service. They're nice enough, when they get around to giving you their full attention. Food rarely comes out the same way every time, and has about a 30% error ratio. Never take someone to Torchy's who has one of those freaky food organization issues (or a nail fungus), b/c it's all a guessing game how co-mingled your food will be coming out. In dozens of visits, every single time, despite ordering seperately, DH has gotten one of my tacos and vice versa. I'm pretty comfy with the man's cooties by now, so no big thing. But really? Everytime? Maybe it's that poltergeist again.
But, as you can see though, I could give a rat's toenails about Torchy's random bits of fickleness when it means the best of the best of porky, queso resplendency. Another 5 degrees down, and I'll be seeing you soon big T.
The Trailer Park Eatery was a fun place to have an inexpensive dinner outside. It's cool at night with candles lit on the picnic tables and a fire pit with logs to sit on. I wish I would have known about the BYOB, though!
Sadly, Shuggie's was closed, but Torchy's is definitely an acceptable alternative, nothing to complain about here! I tried the fried avocado (YUM!), their queso was amazing, and the green chili pork taco was probably my favorite!
Now all they need is an Amy's ice cream for dessert!
Review Note: This is meant to be read with the other reviews already posted. Others have sung Torchy's praises quite nicely. I'm not a hater, just wanted to point out a few things.
--------------------------
I'm a fan of this place, but think it's worth another review.
Like the other folks on Yelp!, I'm a fan of the food at both Torchy's and the burger place. It's darn tasty. Actually, it's pretty addicting. But still, I don't think Torchy's is the heaven on earth that others do.
Let's start when you arrive. The line, it's slow. Slower than I would think it should be. I can't figure out why, but it is. The kitchen seems to always be backed up. Don't let this discourage you from going, just know that this isn't the solution for a quick bite to eat.
Now, on to the nibbles.
The food is great, but on the extra greasy side, even for Mexican. While I mention it's Mexican, I need to add that it isn't Mexican-Mexican or even TexMex. It's its own variety of Mexican. A damn good variety as long as you're not expecting one of the other Mexicans.
Okay, back to the greasy. I like fried food. I love a respectable amount of grease. But Torchy's has excessive grease. I've gotten to the point that I won't even order the chips and queso or guacamole because the chips are so greasy they're wet. This is a shame because the queso is very, very good.
Tacos. The same. I like the shrimp tacos. They're fried. They seem to come with a side of grease. Makes me want to cry.
Okay, on to the good, because I really do dig this place!
The vibe - fantastic, South Austin outdoor style. Basically you're eating in a hay covered parking lot. Great for kids and dogs alike. Wind can be dangerous though, it gets dirt and hay in your food.
The food - overall, it's nice, spicy goodness. Just know that you'll get all the grease you need for the week in one sitting.
Booze - bring your own. Always a plus as long as you remember.
Price - on the expensive side for tacos. Dare I say overpriced? In a town like Austin, you can't swing a dead rat without hitting a good taco joint. Torchy's is way low on the value scale.
I'm boycotting Torchy's until they reopen Shuggie's! The closed the absolute BEST burger joint in town.
Fried avocado tacos ruin my diet, are surely terrible for me (how much fat is in that again?), and are difficult to eat. But they are as close to religion as I get.
This place is awesome. The food is insanely good, cheap, and fast.
OK, now I have really seen all the world has to offer, and feel I can die a happy man. In no town in the world can I see a trailer park/parking garage/burger stand/taco stand working so well, but this is Austin and it is GLORIOUS!!!
The South Austin Trailer Park and Eatery is a hip little spot to get your taco and burger on. If you don't know about Torchy's Tacos you haven't been paying attention and thankfully we have now been graced with another creation by the same trailer food stand king: Shuggie's Burgers. The combination of these two Goliaths of trailer park cuisine is an ingenious way to make South Austin even more South Austiny.
Now, to what we had... A few of us were thinking of where to grab a bite to eat after a day of athletic feats and friendly competition at the park. We all wanted something greasy, good, and on the go; so the Trailer Park was a fitting solution to our Sunday afternoon cravings. Between the three of us, we tried The Democrat, The Brushfire, two burgers, the Ice Cream Battered Onion Rings and the French Fries. Our entire meal was created by hand, and grilled up to perfection in separate trailers and was all ready at roughly the same time. We munched, we played ping pong, we didn't want to leave. The food is fabulous, the atmosphere is one of a kind and this is a spot everyone is Austin should enjoy.
Cheers, BRING YOUR OWN BEERS!
South Austin Trailer Park is home to a devil and probably an escaped convict. Go let these guys cook for you and you can dip ice cream battered onion rings in queso (nowhere else but Austin).
Shuggies Burgers and Seafood have some of the best burgers we've tasted ~ potential to de-throne Huts according to my old lady (and crush). The butterflied and popcorn shrimp are addicting... makes you wonder what Shuggie is putting in the batter?!?
Torchy's of course has it going on and if your head's not in the sand, you know this. The best part of the trailer park is tasting Torchy and Shuggie together and the view out the back of Bouldin Creek? Who'da thunk...
Bring your own beer while you can.
Back in Tennessee my mom rents out trailers for people to live in - we call her the SlumLord - so I am familiar with the trailer park setting. Tacos and burgers in a trailer park setting? All I had to do was hear about it and I was SO THERE!
The line for tacos was insane and moved as slow as molasses in the winter for really no reason whatsoever. But the line for Shuggies was non-existent so I took the opportunity to order from their new brunch menu. I got the chicken-n-waffles because I love that combo and because I clearly have given up on staying even remotely thin. So while my BF waited for some green chile pork tacos, I ate half of the chicken and waffles. Chicken - yum and kind of spicy. The waffle was huge and fluffy but I think I could have used more syrup. They only gave me one little thing of syrup but I needed a lot more. Oh and they also put a huge dollop of butter in the middle of the waffle. We scarfed down the entire thing though. The green chile pork taco was spicy and greasy enough it needed two corn tortillas to keep it together. I washed it down with a diet coke that was way too small for my hungover needs. They need an ultra-large option for us people that drank too much the night before.
I liked the trailer park, communal picnic table ambiance and really enjoyed the food. I will definitely come back next time I am in Austin.
I had already been chowing down on Torchy's tacos for months when I noticed that the airstream trailer had shifted south to a new lot and invited a friend named Shuggie's. I vowed to eat there that week.
To mark the occasion of my first visit I branched out from my usual Green Chili Pork and Baja Shrimp taco combo and ordered the Green Chili queso and basket of fried shrimp, catfish, and hushpuppies. Marvelous! I learned that day that Shuggie's Seafood and Burgers is a delicious complement to Torchy's Tacos. Their fresh seafood is fried to perfection and full of flavor. Next time I plan on trying their homemade veggie burger.
The Trailer Park enhances the fun of dining al fresco with some oldies but goodies tunes and picnic tables covered in red checkered table cloths. This particular location has no in-door seating so if it's summertime (May through November) you might want to wait until sundown.
As Austin grows, and more despicable Californians arrive to pollute the local culture and jank up our economy by making it grow too large, too fast, I often hear the poor locals lament, "Whatever happened to our laid-back Austin lifestyle?"
It is at the South Austin Trailer Park and Eatery.
How to recover your lad back Austin lifestyle:
1) Ride bike or walk to barton springs
2) Roll, light and smoke joint
3) Swim, sunbathe, and socialize until hungry
4) Ride bike or walk to South Austin Trailer Park and Eatery
5) Eat, hang out, and relax
This place could only be improved by cold Shiner beer.
Such a great place to hang out for a bite to eat. Nothing quite like sitting between a bunch of trailers on a picnic table, chowing down on some killer Torchys Tacos, while enjoying some beers BYOB-style. The place is dog friendly, has good food, and is just a cool place to chill with friends. Whenever the weather is nice, make a point to hit up the South Austin Trailer Park & Eatery. Get yourself some deep fried bacon from Shuggies, a Diablo Taco from Torchys and some beverages from your igloo cooler. Will be going back on a regular basis!
You simply can't go wrong with the South Austin Trailer Park; it's such a cool place, and the food is truly awesome. It's nearly impossible to decide between Shuggies and Torchys... Shuggies burgers are incredible- I get the basic cheeseburger and it's always delicious. The fries are equally impressive, and for a real treat, try the onion rings. Lightly spicy, always superb. Service has been stellar as well. Bring some cold drinks, order a burger and fries, sit at a picnic table and soak-in Austin's finest trailer chow. Be prepared to "hunt" for parking, but it's worth the effort!
Hands down my favorite Torchy's location. The service is good, the food is AMAZING, and the setting is quite nice for a trailer park! I love to take out of town visitors here!
