This is the best place, hands down, in Philadelphia to buy CDs. They have a widest range of [insert every genre of music here] at Sound of Market. I rarely buy CDs (I perfer vinyl), but when i do, I come here.
This is the perfect spot to go to for that hard to find/obscure album, 99% of the time, they will have it.
Note, it's a little difficult to find. The entrance is misleading. It looks like a sketchy electronics store. There is a stairway in the back that leads upstairs.
Love this store Highly recommend!

Tucked away above an electronics store, the Sound of Market Street has an absolutely ridiculous selection of jazz CDs, the likes of which I have never witnessed outside of NYC. Stocks your Blue Notes and Verves, but the main attractions here are the offerings from smaller labels like Eremite, FMP, AUM Fidelity, Okka, 482 music, etc. The buyer at the Sound of Market Street clearly does not subscribe to the Ken Burns/Wynton Marsalis version of jazz history.
The prices are a tad high, but with a selection this good, who cares! Whenever I go here, I leave my debit card at home and use cash to limit my spending.

I'm amazed so few people have reviewed this place. As Alex P say, Sound of Market is a stereo store on the first floor, but the upper floors are packed to capacity with great music, much of which you can't find anywhere else in the city (or on the net). I'm a jazz buff, and good jazz (not that dentists' office crap) is often the hardest stuff to track down. But I can remember few occasions when I've gone to SOM and not found what I was looking for, even when it was pretty obscure.
Was once my favorite CD store on the planet... No they had very little vinyl and no used cd's but they had EVERYTHING you'd ever want at great prices. Imports, out of print cd's, anything... Plus for every 30 cds you buy, you get one free! Then I moved to LA and found Amoeba. But this place is still a hidden gem because it looks like a stereo store from the outside.
