If you work in Inglewood (or "The Wood" as locals like me call it - haha) then Soul Food Kitchen is a regular on the lunch rotation.  The fried chicken and the smothered pork chop are the only main dishes I've had and both are quite good.  The best things about SFK, though, are the mashed potatoes and gravy and the MACARONI & CHEESE...mmm, I love the mac'n cheese, but definitely don't come here unless you have about 2000 calories to spare on one meal....or just get one meal and split it with someone.  Also, I really like the cornbread, but I realize that's kind of a personal preference thing.
The cons are that it got a B on its health rating, so that might be enough to scare some people off and once in a while the line is kinda long (but not usually for lunch).  Also, it's pretty small inside, so it can get cramped if you're not getting your food to go.
Overall, a pretty solid place to stop at if you're ever in the area or headed to/from the airport.

YUM YUM YUM!

After my disappointing visit to Paschal's at the Atlanta airport today for lunch (http://www.yelp.com/bi...), I had to replace the sad soul food taste with soul fulfilling food.  So I hit up SFK, right by LAX.

The line was almost out the door, and it was steady busy like this the whole time I was there. It's cafeteria style. So you order your food, which is boxed up for you.  The platters are HUGE!!!  You get one meat and 3 sides and 2 corn breads.  I wanted ox tails, but they were out. So I got the short ribs.  My sides were: mac & cheese, collard greens, and yams.  It also came with rice and gravy.  This food made me so happy!!!  The short ribs were so tender, smothered in the gravy.  The mac and cheese was a little bit overcooked, but in that way where it's still comforting.  The greens were perrrrrfect with bits of pork in it.  The yams were a little bit too sweet for me, but still so tasty!!!  The corn bread SANG in my mouth.  Wasn't too crumbly, nice and moist, and buttery... SO GOOD!

My only complaint (and this goes for all of Los Angeles) is that they don't have sweet tea.  If places like this and Roscoe's had sweet tea, they would be perfect!

The prices are cheaper here for lunch, so I'd recommend that over dinner.  Also, it's a good place to grab some take out.  They don't have a lot of table space.

After reading my fellow yelpers reviews,  I decided to give it a try.  I ordered short ribs, rice, mac and cheese, yams and collard greens.  the dinner also included two corn bread muffins.

I was not the best soul food meal I have had but it was not the worse either.  Overall the meal was okay, they do need to reconsider the corn bread recipe.

Dulan's SFK hit the spot today as a respite from the drizzly rain and bad weather. Stopped in on the way just minutes from LAX and it popped up on my Yelp Mobile.

Watch your back as you enter as the area is dicey with all kinds of folks hitting you up for spare change. Once in, you will have a hard time deciding what to order. Oxtail? Fried Catfish? Fried Chicken? Which two sides-I AM SO CONFUSED.

Decided to go on the first instinct and ordered the smothered chicken. Two pieces , cooked to perfection, moist and flavorful falling off the bone. Used plain rice to soak up the gravy, and also ordered the collard greens and an extra Mac and Cheese side. Comes with two corn muffins- nicely moist, slightly sweet and buttery (not grainy or dry either.) The regular order of smothered chicken plus two sides is $12.

My buddy ordered the fried chicken, and it was nicely seasoned (and salty-yay!) Two generous pieces of chicken They also have pepper vinegar on the table to splash for extra kick.  The red beans were really more like Chili, and not traditional red beans that you may be accustomed to.

Bummed that they don't have plain or un-sweeteened iced tea (only the Nestea soda fountain machine which ain't the same.

The Sweet Potato Pie was just sweet enough, with a nice crust and texture. They also have slices of Red Velvet cake as well if you are craving dessert.

Gotta love the rainbow of personnel in there too. Big haired Asian cashier, a Latina server, plus people of all colors and hues patronizing this Little Kitchen that Can (and DOES!)

Crowded but clean, tasty food, generous portions, fair pricing,  and great atmosphere. Make sure to check out the portrait gallery on the wall with the owner and notable personalities (The Rev Jesse J., Quincy Jones, Rosa Parks, to name a few.)

Tough parking though, and probably not the safest to travel alone to..
but if you can get past that you'll enjoy your meal. The posted Yelp pictures seem a bit dated as the decor has increased and is looking a bit more worn these days than the photo's suggest.

No I dont mind standing in line rain or shine to get some of that smothered chicken, sweet potatos, greens and mac and cheese. The corn bread I could do without, but man this place is so good. The parking sucks and you may be waiting in a line thats way pass out the door, but once you get this stuff back 2 ur house. YOu will have no regrettes. This not for anyone on any kind of diet. But its soooooooooo good.

I came here last night before the Green Day concert and wow was I in Soul Food heaven! I definitely didn't read the reviews carefully because my meal alone could feed me for at least three days.

This place is cafeteria style and my friends and I all ordered something different. http://static.px.yelp.... My friends ordered the smothered chicken, short ribs, and baked catfish, while I ordered the oxtail. With each meal you have a choice of THREE sides! I picked the greens, mac n cheese, and okra with corn. The meal also came with two mini cornbread muffins. http://static.px.yelp.... http://static.px.yelp.... My jaw seriously dropped as I saw the lady serve two huge scoops for each side that I ordered.

I was sooo overwhelmed when I sat down. I had no idea where to start! Finally after taking my pictures and oogling all the food I took a small bite of the mac n cheese. The mac n cheese was fantastic with all that cheesy goodness! I had to refrain from eating too much, I had way too much food in front of me. I then tried the oxtail and it was soo tender and tasty, the meat just fell off the bone. I even forgot there was rice underneath it because there was so much oxtail and gravy! The okra and corn were good too, lots of ground pepper and extra spice to give it a little kick. The greens were my least fav of the sides, I thought they were cooked well but it was a little bitter for my liking, but one of my friends liked it a lot. The cornbread muffin was also amazing. It was nice in warm and moist, not too crumbly for cornbread, just the way I like it.

I also got to taste a little bit of what my friends ordered and I have nothing bad to say about any of it. The smothered fried chicken was very flavorful and the gravy with onions was goooood. The baked catfish was soo moist and the seasoning was perfect. The short ribs was probably my 2nd fave (I'm definitely a carnivore), it was very tender and I was surprised on how lean it was. The one side order I missed was the candied yams, but luckily one of my friends ordered it. We kind of saved it for last for our "dessert" but it wasn't too sweet which is a good thing, the texture of the yams was nice and smooth. My taste buds did a happy dance for the candied yams!

Overall this was a great soul-filled experience. My meal with a drink came out to be $19, might be expensive if the portions were smaller, but it was worth it with the huge servings. The 4 stars, maybe 4.5 is for the slow moving line. There were only about four people ahead of us but the lady at the register took so long for I don't know what reason. But other than that you can bet that I'll be coming back for seconds! =)

I don't know if they are allowed to act a fool on Sunday but they sure did today. All I have to say is RAW CHICKEN!!!! I like this place most of the time but that did it for me. That's not even the worst part. I call them to let  them know and some dude named DAVID told me there was nobody in charge there and its nothing he could do about it. So there you have it. I'm done!

After reading the reviews about Soul Food Kitchen I just had to type a review myself.  For starters I totally disagree with the opinion dated 9/7/08, (even though opinions are like a_ _holes....everybody's got one) I thought I'd set the records straight.  I've been enjoying Soul Food Kitchen since 2001.  I've always enjoyed the food, plus the employees are warm & hospitable.  I dine out frequently, and have yet to come across another Soul Food restaurant that's aromas linger blocks beyond where it's located (you're lucky if you smell anything upon entering).  The amount of food is enough for two,  whatever is on the menu they'll prepare for you (never out of any entrees...even on Sundays). Although the line is like a human rubber band , they could stand to expand,  and the parking isn't the best in the land, make no mistake.......IT'S WORTH THE WAIT!!!

I go to various cities(in Los Angeles) where solicitors tried to sell me something (within a 30 min window) more than once,  I DON'T KNOCK THEIR HUSTLE (BEATS BEING ROBBED). And no matter where I go in Newport Beach, Santa Clarita, etc.....rest assure their cities local news paper(s) are near and understandably so.  Folks that make comments like the one made by the little boy on 9/7/08 need to get a life, and do their homework.

Lunch ended @ 4pm.
I asked the server, "do you like Oxtail or Smothered Chicken better?" she said, "I like Smothered Pork Chop better," with smile.

So that's what I got, along with Collard Green, Mac n Cheese, Cabbage, and Corn Breads. At first, I don't think that the Pork gravy taste is strong enough, but it actually gets better after few bites. The texture is just average. other sides, also OK.

I had been looking for something different for lunch, and my travels were taking me by Inglewood and I decided to go to Porkys BBQ.  Unfortuneately, Porkys appears very out of business.  So, I headed back to the office, hoping to spot something interesting on the way.  That was when I saw Soul Food Kitchen.  I decided to chance it and pulled into the parking lot.  The security guard told me the food was "wonderful."  So, I was off.

Upon entering, I was warmly greeted by one of the workers behind the counter.  The food is served cafeteria style, which I kind of like.  I do not consider soul food to be a classy food, it is best served in a relaxed atmosphere, so the fact that they serve food this way did not bother me in the least.

The worker recommended a couple things.  Without asking, she offered up a sample of delicious short ribs.  They were very tender and tasty and it melted in my mouth.  When she told me the fried chicken was fresh, I had to have it.

I paired the chicken with red beans and rice and collared greens.  I had never eaten "greens" before so it was something new.  I also added in a piece of coconut pineapple cake.  I took my food to go.

Driving back to the office, I could smell the warm chicken.  My car was full of wonderful seasoning smells.  Back at the office, I commenced eating.  The chicken was very good, incredibly moist with just the right amount of breading on it.

The collared greens were surprisingly good.  They were slightly bitter with pieces of meat throughout.  The red beans were large and tasty.  They really show how bad Popeye's red beans and rice is.  The cake was fresh and truly homemade.  It was equally good.

In the end, I am very glad I took a chance on this place.  The people working there were very friendly and the food was equally wonderful.  I will be back.

To eat or not to eat... That is the question... If you're referring to Soul Food Kitchen, then the answer is YES, EAT EVERYTHING! The food here is pretty darn delish... and they give you enough for 2 to 3 meals all at once! Talk about recession proof goodness.

The cabbage is a must! The meat loaf is a little different, but it gets better with every bite. The ox tails were amazing (they use bay leaves, so if you no likey then stay away from the ox tails). Def. not diet-friendly, but if you were on a diet you probably shouldn't be looking up soul food restaurants anyway...

Stop debating, just go!

If I were to have a last meal, this would be the place, and Mastro's was the place I would have a last meal but Soul food kitchen has taken that spot LoL. I haven't had this place in 3 years and been aching to go since, I only go to the Hood to get my hair done and come right back to the OC but this time I had to have SFK . I took my  gf from the east bay to this spot yesterday noon ( July 4th ) It wasn't crowded since it was a holiday , thank god, since in the previous reviews they always state how crowded the place is and the parking lot never has spots open. Well my car was the only one in the lot .

So my gf and I walk in and the first thing I notice is the ooey gooey mac and cheese mmmmm . I order Fried cat fish lunch, I swear their lunch size is more like dinner size, makes you wonder how big is the dinner size meals . So my sides were rice and gravy , greens and mac and cheese OMG , fish was super fresh since that is made to order and every thing else is cafeteria style.  The cat fish is the way I like it, fried and not to thick. The mac and cheese is the BEST I ever had , not one noodle is skipped with cheese.  The greens so tasty and well seasoned and I love rice and gravy. Best meal I ever had , seriously better than my high end steak house meals.  My gf had fried chicken again since we just had that shit at Roscoes the night before LOL , her sides were yams, mac and cheese. Dessert peach cobbler mmmmmm. Overall this is my favorite spot and if I lived in Inglewood I'd be back to my old weight and then some , eating this place every week mmmmmmm. I can't wait to go back and this time I won't wait 3 years to go back!

So, I had to check 'em out. I read the long line stories and was expecting the worse ( I HATE crowds, lines, and heat...I'm in the wrong city, huh? LOL). To my surprise, there were no crowds nor long lines. Then again, I rolled up in there around 9:30 but it was on a Saturday. No one was waiting in line and there was just one family eating.

I ordered the short rib meal...and they BROUGHT IT! I had a TON of food, and I was thinking, "Is this because it's near closing time and they see my thick self and decided to put EVERYTHING LEFT in my container? Maybe so. Either way, it was a bunch of grub, and that's always better than not enough. Kinda pricey, but at least you get your money's worth.

So, here's the rundown:

Short ribs: Real nice. Big .Tender. Tasty. Not overseasoned or underseasoned.

MacCheezy: Consistent. Cheesy. Cool.

Greens: Flavorful. Seasoned right.

Yamsters: (Didn't get to them - WAS TOO FULL! LOL!)

Cornbread: (See above!)

Overall, I'm diggin' them and will defenitely be back to taste the ox tails which they were out of.

(UPDATE! 6/21) Ok, I just came back from there and the short ribs were STILL off the hook! The greens are the best I've ever had. I FUCKIN' LOVE THIS PLACE! Next up - OX TAILS!!!!!!!!!!

Not the best, but not horrible either. Im not usually in Inglewood but I was, so I decided to check it out. I got the smothered chicken and mac and cheese. It ended up being about $9 which is on par with other soul food places, they serve you cafeteria style like at school... or panda express. Anyway, I got the smothered chicken which was good but not great. I think the chicken was a bit overcooked, it was soft but it felt like it would smush together if i squeezed it. The piece were kind of small too.

The mac and cheese was ok, the noodles were a bit overdone but it seems alot of places do this (for some reason). If you're near by then I would drop by but there are better places.

The people seem nice enough, there about dining for 15 inside the place and a few small tables outside.

Soul Train your AZZEZ down to the Back Porch, where home soul cooking is more than just good looking!  Corn bread, grits, Mac and Cheese (Last time I remember) Delicious chicken, puck, puck, puck, perfectly plucked, and all made to perfection; meaning:  this is great stuff, tasting mighty delicious on the comfort level, no pretense!  Come on down, and get yourselves ready to sit your nice booties down to eat!  If you haven't eaten here for a long while, they are no longer next to Pavillion's, so pay attention to your map quest directions.  Just don't drive while GPSing, you'll get there in time.  When you're feeling down, AKBP soul food may be your ground.

For years I drove past this place on my way to school but I finally got to try it out last weekend. I was thoroughly pleased!

Sunday afternoon, my stomach is grumbling and this place has a line going out the door. Good sign! We got there in time for their dinner special - your choice of an entree, three sides, a desert, corn bread, and ice tea for $16 and the portions are huge! The bf and I split : fried chicken, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, rice with gravy, peach cobbler and corn bread. It was more than enough for both of us.

Although everything was delicious, the highlights of the meal for me were the mashed potatoes and the cobbler. The potatoes were flavorful and the texture was just right, and the cobbler was unbelievable - rich, very cinnamon-y and bold. Also the service was polite, and friendly - all in all a great dinner was had.

This place is definitely a diamond in the rough.

It will be hard for me to give any soul food joint 5 stars because things are "different" at soul food spots. Customer service is different and timing is not everything. But Sould Food Kitchen (SFK) is about as good as ya gonna get to soul food perfection in LA. Chef Marilyn's on Crenshaw and M7M's on Manchester NOT Centinela  are the best in the LA/Inglewood area. I am 6'4 280 pounds. I played football, I like to eat and my family is from Alabama where I will put my grand mother's cooking against anyone's relative in a soul food cook off! I know soul food and I know food and trust me when I say SFK is 4 starz great!
I recommend the short ribs (with the rice since the rice is not counted as a side dish), pork chops, fried or smothered chicken.
Sides: Black eye peas, Mac, greens (grab the lil plastic shot cup of vinegar for your greens...trust me), and the yams are usually sublime.

Don't listen to Carlos K. as he definitely has a different opinion on how things should be for soul food spots and trust me they are off base. I live in Inglewood and SFK is located in a great spot and just park on the street you will rarely get a parking spot in the lot. There is usually a line so they turn food over fast so you know your food is pretty fresh and hot! The portions are awesome! Even I have to take 2 trips to my meal to finish it. I hunt high and low for soul food joints and I will put this place up against most "fast food" style soul food joints. You want a sit down spot go to Harold and Belle's and spend a small fortune (great food there too!). Sundays you get a complete meal for 16.95 but get there early as the church folk are there right after service and are there for a long time. Be patient. The food is worth it.

My fav: short ribs with rice and gravy. Pork chops are really tender. Yams black eyed peas and red beans not too bad.

Trust me my friends I will bring you to the soul food promise land. Now off to CJ's as I have read great things on Yelp about it.

Those who have graced my presence know that for some time I have been looking to plan a soul food UYE in the near future.  My soul food restaurant of choice is R and R in Carson, but I like to explore the streets and boroughs of Los Angeles and Yelp reviews looking for a possible alternative.

Soul Food Kitchen isn't and will never be an alternative.

SFK is located east of the 405 at the corner of Manchester and La Brea in Inglewood.  Not a bad neighborhood from what I could see, but of course I will not plan any sociological studies nor will I resurrect my formerly prospering street prostitution business to find out if it is.

When I moved to LA, I realized that parking for some restaurants is hit and miss.  Big miss here......the parking lot rivaled the size of your local 7-11.  I was lucky because someone was backing out and I grabbed their spot like a thief in the night.

Approaching Soul Food Kitchen was akin to entering your local DMV.....I was greeted with a line that stretched out the door.  I was thinking of leaving but that voice inside told me to stay.  Someone affiliated with the business SMARTLY placed a local magazine stand that touted black owned businesses and local events in the black community at the foot of the door.

Cue the next scene:  While in line, a nattily dressed gentleman approached and asked if I wanted to buy a CD or DVD (He asked me twice more before I left).  This encounter made me think of that scene in "Barbershop" where ole boy came in selling CD's, DVD's, and a satellite dish.  Jay-Z once said, "You can't knock the hustle."  I won't even try.

I deducted one star immediately when I went to the front of the line.  Cafeteria style.  To remind me of my public school upbringing, my server even sported a hairnet.

They placed a large sign inside that drew everyone's attention that displayed SFK's special.  For $16.95, one can get an entree, 2 cornbread muffins, cornbread dressing, tea, dessert, and a choice of 2 sides.

I ordered the meat loaf as my entree and I opted for the mac and cheese and greens.

My 2 star rating is explained below......

The meat loaf was a disappointment.  The portion was huge, but that meat wasn't close to ground beef.  Not much flavor either.

The cornbread:  Mediocre.  Dry, and not fluffy.  I can't cook worth a damn, but I am pretty sure I can do better than this.

Cornbread dressing.....Nope.

My 2 sides were the mac and cheese and greens as mentioned above.  Ok and just ok.  Not mouth watering or overwhelming.  Someone needs to tell the cook that it is OK w/me if you add chunks of pork to the greens.

The tea.  Damnit!  Shit!  Flavored Nestea.  C'mon man.....can anyone in California make tea the way my relatives make it??

The peach cobbler was actually the best part of the meal.

Will I come back......no!!!!  Even the cute chick with back for days behind the counter won't lure me back to Soul Food Kitchen.

This 'aint yo momma's kitchen!!!
Havin been to M n M, Roscoes, and other establishments, the overall quality of the food here is amazing!
Yes it lacks ambiance, it's not very spacious, but what it lacks up there it makes up in quality of food!
The meatloaf is fantastic. The gravy is not overpowering.
Smothered chicken: Delish. The great thing about here is it's not overcooked! More often than not, most places chicken is killed! Not here, nice n moist. The gravy nice n thick.
The beef short ribs aren't typical: They're not grissly and full of fat. These are tender, moist, and lean.
Oxtails: Full of meat. They're cooked really well and pack a nice flavor in 'em.
Sides: Mac n cheese: Moist, not dry, and very cheesy!
Candied yams: Great. Hints of cinnamon n other spices.
Corn n okra: Most places just blend some corn n okra together, and that's it. Not here! Seasoned perfectly, not mushy, and has a nice hint of spice in it!
Definitely a winner. And the security guard outside in the parking lot is attentive and helpful!

When I'm not in Atlanta.......I always go to this place for some soul food. The portions are humongous...you could share with someone....or you will definitely have leftovers....

The line is always long during lunch and dinner....i mean like people are lined up all the way out the door!

I always order the baked or fried chicken with rice/gravy, mashed potatoes, and green beans w/ cornbread.
But they do have everything else.....oxtales, meatloaf, baked fish, baked chicken, greens, yams, cabbage, green beans....i mean anything you could imagine its there.....

Parking sucks......there's a small ass parking lot...but i don't even bother driving the f150 in it cuz i might not be able to get out........and then there's some street parking but ugh.....thats the only downside but u MUST GO HERE!!!!!

When we get off the plane, we rent a car, and head for SFK; Some folks might be put off by its location, but we're from Oaktown, and this is bustling, active, and LA friendly.  If you can get a space in the lot, all the better, but sometimes we just park on the street.

Some folks don't like the cafeteria style, but we love it, because you can see what's really fresh.  We always get dark meat fried chicken, mac, greens, and the yams make a great dessert.  The smothered chicken short ribs are great too.  Sometimes we just take a meal home; two dinners is plenty for three to share!

What sets sfk apart from most soul shops, like Aunt Kizzy's (sorry), is the speed of service, and the friendliness of the owner.  We've been in about six times, and he never fails to greet us, introduce us around .  He' s really proud of the success of his servers!!!  The cafeteria style means you can get in and out quickly (but save a table; they're in short supply; a few inside, a few outside).

If you're in San Francisco, you might want to try Hard Knox Cafe... similar menu, but more of a sit down place.

I was invited by Mr. Dulan, the owner, to try out his soul food joint smack dab in the heart of Inglewood!  Adolf Dulan's Soul Food Kitchen!
As soon as my buddy, Rich, and I arrived, we were taken on a walk thru tour by no other than Mr. Dulan himself!  He pointed out each piece of equipment and explained it's use (Very Educational).  He also, introduced us to his entire staff!
This cozy spot sits on the corner of Manchester Blvd. and La Brea, right behind the flower shop.  It has a handful of small tables inside, and a few smaller tables lined up outside.  The main idea here is to get the food to go, EXPRESS!!!  He has this restaurant set up cafeteria style.  Kindda like a $1.00 Chinese point-point joint, BUT that's where the similarities come to a screeching halt!  Unlike the cheapy point-point joints, the quality of the food here is that of a FULL BLOWN, SIT DOWN, DINE-IN, MENU in HAND, RESTAURANT!!!
The food... let me start by saying, " DAYAM!!! " This place totally qualifies to be on my " I Love Me Sum Meat " list!  Yes! People, let me tell you...  They've got BRAISED SHORT RIBS!!!  You know how much I LOVE short ribs!  And theirs is one of the best I've ever had!  So TASTY, So TENDER, So..., OMG, I'm drooling from the fond memories of my meal!
My generously portioned meal, starring my B.S.R., was perfectly complimented by SMOTHERED CHICKEN, RICE & GRAVY, MAC-n-CHEESE, & COLLARD GREENS! I also sampled what Rich had on his plate, Smothered Pork Chops, tender & juicy, NOT tough & dry, Fried Catfish, seasoned just right!  On the side, Mashed Potatoes & Gravy, Steamed Cabbage, and Yams!  Okay, I KNOW you have got to be SALIVATING by now!!!
Other items we got to try and enjoyed as well are the Meatloaf, Corn & Okra Succotash,  & Green Beans!  And let's not forget dessert.  I had the RED VELVET & GERMAN CHOCOLATE cakes!  Y U M M Y!!! They've got other desserts, and make their own COBBLERS! Can't wait to try it next time around.
The motto here, says the owner, is " WE GIVE OUR CUSTOMERS A REBATE BY PUTTING EXTRA FOOD ON THEIR PLATE " and Oh My! does he mean it!
So make sure you go and check out this FAST PACED, FRIENDLY FACE, COZY PLACE!!!  You will not be disappointed!

Whenever I need a good home cooked meal, I go to Soul Food Kitchen.

They have everything imaginable. And they are generous with the portions. One plate lasts me two days (and I eat a lot)! But I warn you if you better take it home and eat it because you are definitely going to need a nap afterwards!

My favorite is the smothered chicken. Its flavorful and very juicy. I always always get the mac and cheese and cabbage for sides. Each plate comes with the most delicious freshly made cornbread and sweet tea! Yes I said sweet tea! I haven't had that since I came this side of the mississippi!

Sometimes the line will run out the door but its worth the wait. And believe me the service is fast. Its usually because the customers can't decide what to pick! Sunday is a great day to go because you get a entree 3 sides, cornbread, cake and sweet tea for $15!

More people need to head to the wood for some good food.

So I have firefighter friends who work in Inglewood that reccommend this place like no other.

So the prices seem a bit high (like $11 for a plate) for the cafeteria style food, but then you see your portion... 3  pieces of meat, 3 enormous portions of sides and cornbread muffins.

You know that perfect amount of grease and pepper that makes your mouth say soh yes thank you may I have another, well they do too!

I had the smothered chicken, best read beans and rice since I drove through the bayou, possibly the best candied yams ever (If I was in town for thanksgiving I would order them and serve them at dinner) and the corn and okra (which I could have done without).

It wasn't crowded so there was none of that soup nazi vibe and I only wanted 1 piece of chicken so they gave me a $4 discount.

Great for takeout or eat there. Its just good.

I hold off on the fifth star only because of ambiance.

I'm originally from the Bay Area, but already, I know what time is the best time to show up at the Kitchen, especially on Sundays. Woohooo! Their food tickles the soul and they give you enough to last a while.  On Sundays, it's a little extra, but talk about a sunday dinner.  I would go back as much as possible if I lived closer.  Worth the travel from Glendale for the few times I do go.  mmmmmm..mmmm

Soul Food Kitchen, what can I say, I just like the food. My sister went there and order a entire dinner and gave it to me. Why? She was too sleepy to eat.

It wasn't what I would have ordered for myself, but shucks I am not turning down a meal from that place. She order fried chicken (dark meat), with greens, yams and mac & cheese. As of today I still have food left on that plate to eat!

When I am ordering for myself I would have smothered chicken (white meat) and cabbage, yams and greens. I have had it before and it's equally as tasty.

After 3 days I am still eating, so much food and that's a good thing. Especially if you are not in to cooking.  Since I have been there before to dinning in and taking out I will add a few more comments about the place.

It's small, you can dine in, but it's a little cramped, but when you are eating food that good who cares. From time to time you can see the owner roaming around and on occasions I caught a celebrity or two coming in or out of the place. I have to say that everyone that has waited on me from the person serving the food to the cashier are very nice and friendly.  There are times when you might want to stay away from there, because the lines are long, so go in between lunch and dinner rushes.

I hear they have breakfast, but I haven't tried it yet. If anyone does send me a note.

amazing mac & cheese. sometimes i'll just get a quart to go and eat the whole damn thing with a spoon, like it's some very berry strawberry.

everything is really good, and in huge portions, but i like the fish and the smothered chicken the best. everything is a bit greasy, but that helps everything slide down a little better, right?

it's located on la brea and manchester, next door to the florists. parking is HORRIBLE. the lines are usually long, but i think it's worth it.

I love SFK! It's in Inglewood so be careful(lol)! I first tried their Mac&Cheese when my mom gave me her leftovers, and it's been a love affair ever since. Like In-in-Out, you do have to wait in a line, but the portion sizes are so big(enough for lunch and dinner). I recommend you try to get there before 4pm because the dinner prices are like 2-3 bucks more. The parking kind of sucks and the security guard/parking lot guy, always give me hard time. But the food, portions, prices are worth dealing with 30 seconds of his BS! This place is totally better than M&Ms, which is more popular but that's not always important. I suggest you try the mac&cheese, with either the smothered pork chops/baked catfish. Each meal comes with 2 corn muffins that are really good too. Like a previous reviewer I too have drove all the way over there just for the Mac&cheese.

Solid food for sure.  much more an expense than the 99 cent soul food on Crenshaw, but then, the postions are gargantuan, too.  Good greens, cooked with turkey, not ham hock (a bit less fatty) ,and the sweet potato pie is very nice.

Worst/Best Food Coma was induced at this location, and the takeout portion of mac n' chee', sweet potatoes, cornbread and collard greens lasted me for two more days afterwards.
