Grove St (PATH)
Harsimus Cove (HBLR)
This place has the best fried chicken I ever had, seriously. The food here is so good, that if it was located in Manhattan you probably would have to pay twice as much (if not 3 times as much). Always a satisfying treat...crab cakes are delicious, so are the ribs...Homemade Ginger beer is amazing, highly recommend.
The place itself is very cozy and cheerful, not really a kind of atmosphere you'd expect for the quality/taste of food you get (i.e. very expensive fancy restaurant), which gives it a great value. All I can say is, the chef knows what he is doing, and he is damn good at it, too.
And it's BYOB...so bring a bottle of wine to top off deliciousness.

What a fantastic little place.
This adorable little "mom and pop" establishment is conveniently located just 2 blocks from the grove street PATH station in J.C. I had the good fortune of going during the Hudson River Restaurant Week-- although I didn't know that it was restaurant week, there was no problem getting in without a reservation.
The whole establishment is the size of my small Manhattan apartment. It is beautifully decorated with attractive furniture, local artist's paintings, and great lighting.
The food was phenomenal. Specialties are the ribs, the collard greens, the fish. Soul food classics like corn bread and rice pudding round out the menu next to beef, pork, and seafood specialties.
The menu changes periodically-- which is a testament to what is fresh and available.
The service was friendly, and kind, and knowledgable about ingredients (was able to accomodate special dietary restrictions).
This was a fun little spot, and I highly recommend it!
I'm looking forward to going again.

Ive eatin soul food all my life and this is not soul food. Only people who have never had real soul food would think this pompous and overdressed restaurant was good. I had the chicken and waffles and girrrrrl let me tell you the chicken was shake and bake, very dry and over seasoned. The waffle was soggy and flattened from all the chicken that was stacked on top. Please someone help these people take their heads out their asses. Your trying to be to fancy and its making you look lazy. Instead of baking the chicken you should deep fry it and switch to chicken wings instead. The waffle needs to be crispy and fluffy. Anyway if you guys want real soul food drive down to communipaw in Jersey City, Now those folks know how to cook soul food.
A hardcore foodie friend said it was the best soul food he'd had in the entire NYC area. Not just a great experience "for Jersey" but simply a great experience.
Will have to try and update with further details.
