I purchased a gift certificate over the phone for my mother for her 77th birthday. The chef, Brendan Ayers, said people usually came in to buy gift certs, but said I could buy it over the phone, since I don't live in the area. He said he'd have the certificate at the front desk. So far so good.
When my mother and father went to Sophie's a few days later, the waiter couldn't find the certificate, but never called the owner nor the chef to check on it. He inferred that my parents were lying. They were humiliated. They got up and left.
The following day, I called the owner's number and the chef answered. We talked about what had happened. He said he left the certificate in the safe (why? In case someone impersonating my parents tried to claim it??).
Regardless, the matter was closed. I had him tear up the certificate because my mother was too embarrassed to go back.
My recommendation is that if you're going to treat the customers like criminals, you'd be better off working in sheriff Arpaio's kitchen.

As I sat here with my laptop trying to think of my absolute favorite restaurants in Phoenix to write a review about... I smacked my forehead for not remembering Sophie's until now.
First of all, I am a major francophile. I speak the language, have spent time in France and Quebec, and without going into my personal dating habits let's just say that I... er... understand French women. That said, it's not stereotyping to say that French restaurants in the United States tend to be pretentious, over-priced, and snobby. Which is why Sophie's is like a breath of fresh air.
Don't get me wrong: it's not cheap, and I only go there for special occasions. A full meal for two with wine could cost a hundred bucks. But while the food meets anyone's expectations of French culinary quality and professional service, it delivers without the stuffiness. Think of it as going to a great place in the French countryside, as opposed to somewhere on the Champs d'Elysee in Paris.
Events I've personally celebrated there: a first date; a one-year relationship anniversary; and New Year's Eve (they have a New Year's package).
Bon appetit !

Seems like Political Junkie and I might be of one mind on this place.
There's food, good food, great food, and good-as-sex food....Sophie's usually produces the latter. One of my top three choices in the Phoenix area. Very reasonably priced for what you get.....similar restaurants in Scottsdale offer half the quality at double the price.
If a particular server ...that would be 'Jodie', a tall redhead....is available, ask her for her recommendation of the specialty of the day. We've done this twice and have been very impressed....the results have been delicious and memorable. Ordering without guidance, though, can be a bit more hit and miss....we've ended up with some mediocre entrees, a couple times.
Well worth the time, travel and expense!
