I took my GF here when she was jonesing for some dessert.

The crepes here are great.  We got crepes with fruit and ice cream.  GF added nutella to hers.

Portions are pretty big (always a good thing)!

I'm sorry, but I just don't understand the love for these crepes!

I came during the Cherry Blossom Festival, and the line was extraordinary. I took this to mean that the crepes were insanely good. My friends' praise reinforced this expectation.

However, when I finally got my crepe many many moons later, I was confused. I still am, sort of. What am I missing? To be fair, I did not get the crepe that most of my friends got because I don't care for red bean. But I found my crepe too be weirdly chewy; I really had to put some effort into eating this. I was also stressed out by the scoop of ice cream. I love ice cream, but not when it's melting in a hot crepe and threatening to create a huge dripping mess any moment.

I have a very selective sweet tooth. Maybe i'm not a fan of sweet crepes, but this place looks to be overhyped. However, everytime I'm in Japantown the lines for Sophie is always long.

I ordered the banana and nutella crepe without ice cream. The crepes were folded to be portable unlike some other crepes made elsewhere. They did a good job at making the crepe itself crispy. All the flavors are very much expected and nothing really to wow me.

It's okay....... what can I say. 2.5 Stars!

Half the fun of going here is watching them make the crepe. You'd think from watching them that it would be the easiest thing on earth to do... and its not.

Bonus points for making the crepes folded in a way that you can take them to go.... a crepe ice cream cone almost. My boyfriend and I ordered a crepe with mixed fruit (strawberry, kiwi and banana) with whipped cream. Minus points for having more whipped cream than fruit or crepe. I love some whipped cream, but WAY too much was on my crepe that we scraped some off.

Overall it was fine, but I would only go here if I was already at the mall... definitely not for a special trip.

Crepes are always a nice end to a sub-par meal in Jtown. Maybe I've just chosen the wrong dishes to order, but whenever I decide to eat a meal there, I leave with regret, lighter wallet, and half-filled stomach. But SC never has disappointed me yet. For some reason, I thought it was more pricier than around $5-6, but they do only accept cash so be mindful of that. They do have an ATM there though if your stripped for cash.

I'm not a crepes connoisseur, but my well-exercised taste buds are satisfied with the juxtaposition of warm crepe with cold ice cream and fruit. I find their regular menu items good choices, since I'm a whimp when it comes to adding things extra on a manufactured culinary piece. It's a little random to find this pseudo-euro dessert place in japantown, but it's a nice quick stop if you're looking for something sweet after a meal.

There's a sign clear as day saying no pictures allowed.  I clearly disregarded it.

Take a look for yourself: http://www.yelp.com/bi...

I can see why they wouldn't want anyone to take a picture.  Why would you want anyone to know that Yelp loves them.  Or that they are currently hiring.  Or that they have more bananas on their metal shelf than all of Costa Rica has left within its borders.

This goes out to any CIA agents reading this, if you need someone to take recon/intelligence/surveillance photographs for you, look no further.  You can see how easily I circumvented any and all security measures Sophies Crepes took.  Holla-atcha-boy.

Oh yeah and the Nutella and banana crepe was...well....it was bananas.

Service = atrocious and they are pricey for average crepes.

I ordered a crepe with a honey add on (75 cents). Instead I got whip cream, which cost more ($1). I didn't want to wait in line and wait for them to re make the crepe and I figured I could suck it up and just deal with it. So, I scooped all of that the whip off the top and took a bite to find more whip inside. My first error - accepting something that was not what I ordered.  Ugh!!

Then I realized that I wouldn't eat it with that much whip, so I decided to get it done right, which I should have done from the get-go. We went to the counter and explained the situation and the people are SC wouldn't have any of it! They insisted that we ordered whip cream.  WTF, since when does whip cream and honey sound alike? And they commented that I ate the crepe (yes two whole bites). I explained to one person that I scooped off the whip only to find more inside, but I guess they could only focus on the fact that the crepe looked eaten.

It's annoying to be accused of ordering something that you really didn't and how much does it really cost them to make a banana nutella crepe?  Having to hear the staff insist that we ordered whip cream to the manager/owner was frustrating, so I left without getting a new crepe and basically wasting $5.

What a waste of time.

Never again.

Alas! I came back! For shame on me because the crepes here have gone downhill. It used to be so good except the sanitation problem from before. Came with my friends a few days ago after watching Wild Things.
I ordered the mixed fruits with ice cream. The thing fell apart. I wouldn't be so negative but it was because the crepe was too crispy that it was breaking apart!

I will stick with Genki from now on. Their staff was at least attentive and the crepe is tastier by FAR! While ordering, the staff kept interrupting me to instruct the cashier. Do it AFTER I finish ordering. It wasn't about pricing or any mixed orders or else I would not mention. It was for pace. Do not rush me! I am giving good money to you and do not need to feel kicked out.

What is up with all these Euro-phile dessert places in Japantown?  You don't see North Beach churning out mochi and bean cake at every bakery!  There was only one Asian-themed crêpe at Sophie's.  Being well versed in crêpe cuisine, I had no interest in sampling any of the pedestrian flavors that all seemed to be permutations with nutella.  The crêpe just didn't compare to true European counterparts and there weren't enough Japanese-customizations to justify this as a true fusion food instead of simply a mediocre knock-off.

Japanese Crêpe: Not served like a traditional French crêpe, but folded like an ice cream cone with the filling in the center.  This was many times better than other ice cream cone I've had, but doesn't stack up to traditional crêpe texture.  The top of the cone is light and airy, but the bottom has so many layers I felt like I was eating a flaky cookie and felt dry mouthed at the end.  The green tea ice cream and red bean paste were nice fillings, but nothing unfamiliar as they appear in most non-fruit-slice desserts at Asian restaurants.  I did enjoy the maccha syrup (green tea) since it added a good bitterness to mellow out the sweet ice cream.

The crepes were A-OK.  We ordered 2: nutella, strawberries & banana w/ french vanilla ice cream and the other crepe was similar, but with pieces of mandarin.  They started off by giving our order to someone else.  Just because the other couple was standing there, you just don't blindly hand stuff out.  We started off enjoying it because we haven't had it in awhile, but not even half way, it started falling apart =(

I'll be coming back to try the other stuff since its in cute lil Japan-town

Oh: CASH ONLY!!  So bring about $7/person

I love crepes. I love gelato. I love sophie's because of their gelato crepes.

I had the Japanese crepe minus the maccha sauce because the cashier said he didn't like it. Good call because the green tea gelato and red bean paste crepe was deeelicious. My sister and cousin had lychee gelato crepes which were also good but they tasted like they were missing one more element of flavor.

Crepe was yum. gelato was yum. gelato crepe was yumyum.

The place is CASH ONLY and located on the second floor of the japanese center. The address on here says 1531 Webber, but entering through 1501 or 1581 Webber is fine, just go up the stairs to the second store and the first thing you'll see is Sophie's.

I had to make a very difficult decision today.

I had to choose between strawberry-nutella vs. banana-nutella crepe. I wanted to have both, but was saving room in my stomach for some alcohol at a Yelp party!  (teehee)

I went for the classic banana-nutella combo. The crepe itself could've been more softer, this was a little bit too done.  But my bananas were fresh and the nutella was the perfect coating on it!  topped off with whipped cream (why do they have to charge an extra dollar for this?) and packaged in a neat little cone makes it convenient for you to eat on the go.

BTW, cash only.

Get the Japanese crepe! Green tea gelato, red bean paste, and green tea matcha sauce. It's SO heavenly.

The crepe itself is thin and soft and I love how they have gelato. It's different than Genki's thin and crispy crepe, so depends on what you're feeling. Or just go to both!

I love crepes. I want to be wrapped up in a crepe and covered in Nutrella and strawberries and eat my way out. I don't know why I love them so much. It's just thin little pancakes but it's so delicious.

I'm a fan of Sophie's in San Fran. I seriously considered the drive from Sacramento to San Fran just to get a Sophie's crepe.

The gelato crepe was good especially the green tea gelato. But my favorite will also be strawberries with nutrella.

But I was sad when I went a few weeks ago and it was closed for some reason. :(

Cash only.

The best crepes I've ever tasted, hands down! I go for the dessert crepes because the savory ones do not appeal to me. I usually get it with nutella, mixed fruits & green tea gelato with whipped cream. Even without the mixed fruits or whipped cream, it is THE BOMB.

The crepe is very thin and flaky. It isn't salty, nor is it sweet, it has the taste of how a crepe should taste like!

I haven't been to the Japan plaza since I was in High School, which has been more than 8 or 9 years and this place has aged since I was last here. This place seemed cooler when I was a little asian boy from Arizona and visiting and learning about Asian culture, but now that I moved here this place just seems old and the place smelled like bleach. After some dinner in SOMA we ended up here for some dessert.  If you come to a place named "Sophie's Crepes" you might want to order a crepe, but I was so full from dinner I didn't want to order more carbs.

So instead I ordered the Japan Town Sundae which was green tea gelato and some red beans with whip cream. It was decadent and delicious and it almost made me forget how full I was. I almost wanted to order another one but my abs wouldn't appreciate that very much.

One more thing - cash only.

Nice place to visit after a meal not only from somewhere in J-Town but anywhere really! Who doesn't like nutella, fruit, ice cream and whipped cream in their crepes?? Sophie's crepes are made with a sweet batter, yay!

You can sit inside the small restaurant or, like I and many other patrons do, take a seat outside, inside the mall on a wooden bench, enjoy your crepe and people watch.

YUM TO THE MAX!

haven't been here in a while, but i loved their crepes every single time i had one.

both their dessert and ..i guess "salty"(forgot what they were called) crepes are delicious.
i recommend getting something with nutella.

avocado turkey crepe is my favorite and to die for. if you LOVE avocado like me :D
i usually had that for lunch. but for dessert i tried a couple things and i just recommend everything.. even though i didn't try everything yet :P

it's cool how you can watch how they make it through the windows. they're so good at it too. there's usually a line, but be patient, because once you get your order and bite into that thing, you'll think it was all worth it.

I haven't been to Sophie's since the good ol' high school days, so stepping inside the store was like a trip down memory lane.

I was with my friend and it was his birthday and all he wanted from J-town was a crepe from Sophie's.  Who am I to stop him?

We stared at the menu intensely for a minute.  I knew it was going to be a difficult choice.  But I broke down and got the works: strawberries, banana, kiwi, nutella and a scoop of ice cream.

I was probably expecting a mouthgasm for $7, but did not receive.  It's still a good treat, albeit a bit pricey for what you get.

What's better than a normal crepe? A crepe used as a cone! No way! I love foods in cones because it makes it so much easier to eat said food in said cone. No utensils necessary. Sophie's Crepes: brilliant, convenient, and tasty.

I always get a mixed fruit with ice cream crepe ( I think its combo F) when I'm here. It has strawberries, kiwis, banana, whipped cream, and vanilla ice cream. They leave the crepe on to cook a bit longer, so it ends up being crispier and staying crispy instead of getti read more » ng soggy. 5 stars for that because there's nothing I dislike more than a soggy crepe.

After revisiting Sophie's today, I've decided to add one whole star to the rating. Although the crepe itself was still thinner than Ryno's and Cynthia's, it was better and slightly softer than Genki. My mixed fruit with nutella and black sesame gelato was really outstanding. The use of rich and dense gelato to intertwine with a cohort of kiwi slices, strawberries, and bananas was awesome and the addition of nutella just put the entire crepe over the top delicious. Talking about smackin' crepe superiority!

So what made the difference in this experience? They placed the scoop of gelato right at the center with plenty of fresh fruits. At the bottom, they even placed a gigantic whole strawberry to give an extra oomph to the finish line. To add to the surprise, the mix of bananas and black sesame really complimented each other. I loved it! It was one fun and furious ride and I almost ate the cardboard--oops. I would certainly love to do it again!

So why is this place not a 4.5 or 5 stars? In addition to the thin outer layer, how about being expensive when compares to other Asian crepe places?! My crepe was $5.25 and the addition of gelato cost me another two whole bucks! I must say though, that the quality of the gelato was what sent me to crepe heaven this afternoon for a few hours of sugar high. Service was brief and friendly. Cash only and no cameras allowed in the store--not a good way to treat their fans. 4 cautious stars for the noticeable improvements. I hope to come back to try their crepe with other gelato flavors such as red beans, green tea, pistachio, and banana walnut.

If they only have taro gelato...

When I came to this place there was a long line outside so I was expecting it to be super good.  I fell in line and was first off sad to see that they only accepted credit card.  Next as I was trying to order my crepe I guess the person at the register couldn't understand any of the questions I was asking them.  Uhhhh, ok ... so I had to just deal with it when I got my crepe.

After about 10+ minutes of waiting, because they take everyone's order no matter how far behind the people making the crepes are, I finally got my crepe.  It tasted pretty good, and I've had crepes during my trip to Japan and Europe, but not great.

This place seems as if it is more about punching out the crepes as soon as they can rather than making sure each one is perfect ... and making crepes is an art.

Also, this place is pricey ... so bring the cash -- esp if you are adding things on.

Revisiting Sophie's after places like Genki's and Tuttimelon, I have to take a star away.

The crepe itself is very thin. Crunchy rather fluffy like other places. Its still delicious when eaten with ice cream, but lets just say there's room for improvement. ANDDDD I think they're starting to skimp on the filling. So more ice cream and yummy goodness wouldn't hurt either. =D

Their gelato is still fabulous. Flavor to try: Banana Walnut, recommended by my friend and now me! Banana flavored gelato with walnut. Subtle banana flavor with bits of crunchy walnut. Yum!

Sophie's has the greatest japanese style crepes I have ever tasted! Key point being - these are japanese style crepes. If you are looking for hearty stuffed crepes with a thicker texture, this is not the place to go. That's probably pretty obvious considering Sophie's is located directly inside the J-town mall.

Their crepes are the exact consistency and texture of what you would ever want in a crepe holding ice cream and fruit. I found out that it's not so easy to get this perfect texture when I visited another crepe shop down in San Diego and it was entirely too crispy. This made me adore Sophie's even more!

My personal favorite is the mixed fruit crepe (has strawberries and kiwis) with Vanilla ice cream. They fold it just in way that the crepe acts as a "cone" for the ice cream. Ingenious!

Recently, I went with a friend and she suggested the Banana walnut ice cream. That was phenomenal. And considering that I don't even care for banana's that much...that's sayin' a lot!

My suggestion is go eat some nice Japanese food in J-Town, then head over to Sophie's for dessert. Ahhh perfection!

I LOVE SOPHIE'S.

Yummy in my Tummy:
- Create Your Own Ice Cream Crepe w/Green Tea Gelato and Macha sauce ($4.00 + $0.50)
- #17 Japanese Crepe ($5.25)

Unlike Katie Anne N.'s problem of being over charged for creating her own crepe they automatically charged me less when I asked for a Japanese Crepe without the red bean paste. I come to Sophie's often and I've never had a problem with them over charging me.

The Green Tea Gelato here is AMAZING. I usually don't like green tea ice cream because it's too sweet and doesn't taste like green tea. The gelato here is not too sweet and it actually tastes like green tea! I love the macha sauce (green tea sauce) over the gelato. It is bitter, but I think it complements the gelato well. Also I love the crepe itself. It's always a great crispiness. If you're wanting those soft pancake like crepes Sophie's is not for you, so just be warned.

My favorite is the "Japanese" crepe. Green tea ice cream, red bean, and green tea matcha.

You must get the ice cream in your crepe--it's the best part!

About $6 a crepe... kinda pricey, but worth it if you get it once in a while :)

Love the red bean ice cream
Love the sesame ice cream
Love the nutella (good with anything!)

Love the fruits

BUT
not the green tea sauce
not the whip creme

Sophie's Crepe is SO YUMMY!
Went there today with a few of my friends and got the Japanese Crepe with Green Tea Gelato, Red Bean Paste, and Matcha Sauce. It was definitely worth it. The crepe has a nice soft and crispy texture to it and the ice cream blended really well with the crepe.
However, my friend Connie C. got the ULTIMATE crepe combination that's worth a 5 stars at Sophie's - Crepe with whipped cream, icea cream, mixed fruits, and NUTELLA. This is the best that you'll probably ever get. The everything blended perfectly inside the crepe and the NUTELLA makes it taste like a piece of heave. Definitely recommend it if it's your first time.
I also tried its variety of gelatos. They had Black Sesame Gelato, which was really yummy! The lychee one was awesome as well.
I would come back here for more!

Decent selection on the menu and expect to wait a little since the place usually has a line. I guess its great that you can walk around the mall while snacking on it.

Forgot to mention, this isnt a sit down and eat w/ fork and knife place. Also cash only.

BLACK SESAME GELATO! so good! try it!!!

we ordered crepe with strawberry, chocolate, and black sesame gelato.  it was pretty pricey,...totaled to over $7.

a regular crepe with fruit, chocolate, and ice cream however is $5.50, but if you want it with gelato they charge an extra $1.50.

these are the kind of crepes that are made into a cone shape and you hold it with your hand and rip off the yummy flaky pieces, and as a crepe fanatic i give it 5 stars mainly for the fast service and the black sesame gelato.

if you don't wanna spend that much money on dessert, i would say just order the black sesame gelato alone (one scoop = $3.50, two scoops $4.50) or just get an ice cream crepe ($4). hehe

$5.50 for that.  I saw many people in line, and I was a bit hungry after the Giants game.  For a snack, I ordered a strawberry crepe with vanilla ice and chocolate syrup.  It was very good.  It hit that sweet tooth spot that I was looking for.  Sitting here nearly 3 weeks later, I could still taste it.  Maybe I don't really taste it, but my thinks it does.  Come on, don't take things so literal.  SILLY!

If you're in the neighborhood, try it, I would go again.

Even though this place does not really compare to my Ticouz on Mission...any crepes that could be eaten like Ice Cream style is always a plus in my book! I got just a plain crepe with green tea ice cream and it was the perfect dessert after all that meat I consumed at Juban. hahhahhahah....always try to remember to leave a little room for dessert :) I like the fact that its thin and crispy. I guess I have to come back here at least once a week to try out all the combos that they have on the menu. now, I just have to figure out how to alternate between my cupcakes, cream puffs, and crepes....thankgoodness there's 7 days out of a week!

This crepe shop gets really busy. It's probably because it's one of the few places in Japan Center that stays open relatively late. It's a no frills crepe and gelato place. We split a nutella and banana crepe. Even though it was packed to the gills, we managed to make it to our movie with a few minutes to spare. That's quite a feat considering we only got there fifteen minutes before it was about to start. I'll have to try the gelato next time.
