I would've reviewed this place a few years back but I was unaware of Yelp at the time. Or maybe not... Had I looked in on all the 5 star reviews of this salon and then compared it to my experience I probably would've cried. Harder.

Yes, the experience I had here made me cry. I had recently moved to NYC and was looking for a good salon. A friend had recommended it so off I went. On the whole, my experience was okay, which is why it at least got 2 stars; everyone was pleasant and the salon bright and cheerful. Since what I was getting done was really just a trim and color, we (I can't remember the stylist's name) decided to look through a book of color. I pointed out the red-violet color I was sporting back then and she understood and got to work.

Well, I thought she understood. But when she was done my hair was orange. No, I mean Little Orphan Annie orange (I thank all deities that I also didn't have an afro). It was terrifying. She tried to correct it, but there was no undoing what she did. (I do give her credit for trying to fix her error.) And I was guilted into paying for their mistake too. (Which was probably my own mistake. I should've just walked right out, refusing to pay.) I cried. Seriously, I was sitting in a chair in Filene's Basement sobbing because I had orange hair. Even one of the clerks there tried to comfort me. Later, I bought a hat that I wore for the two weeks I waited to cover it with super dark Natural Instincts (wanted to let some of the chemicals leave my hair).

I hope they're a better salon now. I hope they pay attention and know the difference between red-orange and red-violet. Not that I'll ever find out.

Going to Soon was my second try at fixing a horrific haircut that I recieved at Whistle (I told him shoulder length and he cut it to my chin with shaggy dog layers). After 9 months of growing it out and one failed attempt at fixing the cut at a very chi chi place in the west village I went to Shannon at Soon to try once again - the idea being make it so that I didnt HATE my hair so much as it slowly grew out.

Shannon listened to exactly what I wanted, really took time to understand my hair type (a lot of people dont realize how curly my hair really is and thus cut it too short) gave me suggestions but never pushed them on me (a few of them which worked really well!) and worked with what I had to give me a fabulous hair cut that works perfectly with my hair texture. Now Im wondering if I should actually grow my hair out again, I love the cute short cut so much. Not to mention the ambiance of the place is creative, fun and not stuck up. You cant beat their prices for such high quality work. I will absolutely be back!
Thank you Soon!!

Mariana was great! Loved my cut and blow out! I am so happy to have found this place (well thanks to a fellow Yelper who recommended it to me). It is super affordable and the staff is very friendly. Great salon, I will definitely be back!

This is a great salon. They manage to get it right. The atmosphere is comfortable and relaxing. The staff and service is excellent, laid back and puts everyone at ease. The quality of cut and color for such a great price make it a fantastic choice for anyone. The stylists are very up-to-date and with in in terms of skills.

A bonus is that they do inexpensive bang trims for clients, which most salons will not even bother with.

So as a newbie to NYC I figured if I was gonna start my new life here I better know where to get a good haircut.

This isnt usually a hard task for most people but when you have crazy hair like I do (really curly and really thick) finding someone who knows what to do with your hair at a reasonable price is a challenge.

I walked in here and was initially surprised.  The space is big, and airy, with a sheek design of pink and orange everywhere.  Its the type of place you think is going to be pretentious and ISNT!!

Then I got my haircut with Scarlett who first off is super nice and bubbly so I was already at ease.  On top of that, she herself has cute shorter curlyish hair so she really knows what to do with hair like mine.  She totally fixed my hair and made it AMAZING. My hair is way easier to manage and still soft!! Another perk for a curly haired girl like me - she didnt automatically straighten it at the end but did it in a way I could replicate and made my hair curly for me!

So to sum it up in case my review got too long.

1. REALLY cute place
2. Good cut and awesome stylist

*NOTE: I went to the West Side location*

Soon is the greatest.  I used to come here on the regular until I switched to Panyc because I was on a budget.  All of the stylists here are very talented, not just in hair styling but other areas as well.  Several of the girls at Soon have a very creative eye, which certainly benefits in hair design.  The salon is adorable; It's pink candy-striped and very relaxed.  I'm offered a cup of tea everytime I go.  I especially reccomend this salon for you if you like an edgy cut or color.

For haircuts, I reccomend Ruby, Connie, Sage, and Christy.
For color, Gerard, Jenna, Sage, and Stacy.
I haven't been there in a while so I'm not sure if all of these stylists are still here.

As far as I know, if you sign up for the hair model's beauty class you can free cut and $20 highlights, too.

Lastly, bring a picture of the cut/color you want, because the stylists here can duplicate it... It's magic.

Janessa!! Come back to Austin.

Go see her. She is awesome. Janessa did my hair for years when she lived in Austin and I still haven't found anyone who does as good of a blow out as she does and I have complicated hair. Hair you have to work at if you know what I mean.

She is sweet and fun and will make you all pretty.
So go.

If you are a downtown girl on a budget, who has no need for the super-chic "make me a supermodel" designer hair salons, loves rock-n-roll, and has a preference for pink decor- Soon is for you. Of course, if you enjoy only paying $15 for a great trim from a well-trained professional, that is grounds alone for loving this place. The deal is that you pay for the moderately priced (for New York) haircut, and your "in between" trims are $15. If you are anything like me, and you are going for the long, somewhat unkempt look that does not require multiple cuts, this is a real deal.

However, it is tempting to make appointments and show up just for pure enjoyment of the atmosphere. The tulip filled flowerbeds of the storefronts' windows, the pink sherbet striped walls, the kitschy ornate, white-framed mirrors and a dainty chandelier in the middle of the salon are the super-girly contrasts to the rock music that is perpetually playing throughout. The impressive playlists are always hit after unexpected hit, so enjoyable that you will not mind the hour in tinfoil you have to spend while getting your highlights.

The stylists, themselves, are all hipster chic and extremely down-to-earth. As you chat about going out, music, your 5 other freelance jobs that you have, etc. with the stylists, you may get a nostalgic feeling for adolescence. Perhaps it is the 70s music blaring, or the little girl's bedroom dcor, but I always feel like I am getting a makeover by the cool, rebellious girl in school, who dropped out to become an awesome hair stylist in the east village.

Friend recommended I come here to get a great cut for a price that's a lot lower than most NYC salons.

I went and saw Emily my first time here. She's no longer at the salon, but I really liked the cuts and color I got when I went to see her. My hair styles are typically on the more traditional side. Emily trended up my traditional style and color, which was fun.

Recently saw Mona (who is usually at the West side location). She gave me a great cut and color and I was happy as usual when leaving the salon. I also liked that she was really gentle when she was combing, highlighting and washing my hair.

I love the interior too.. completely cute pink and white striped walls and vintage ceiling, tiny and warm, great music (this most recent time was classic rock) and nice green tea while I was getting the cut.

After waiting way too long to cut the mop off my head I was compelled to actively search out a place in the EV that not only fit my budget, but didn't make me feel like I was being rushed through like a product on a conveyor belt. Luckily my girlfriend had already had a few very good cuts from Soon, and after a few hours spent online I decided to give them a shot as well. I was not disappointed.

While the decor is absolutely directed to make a female client feel at home, I in no way felt like I was out of place at all. They play great music, spend enough time washing your hair with a little massage, and Shannon did a great job cutting my thick hair down to a very modern professional look.

You have a choice of stylist from a beginner like Shannon, though I don't really know how she is considered a newbie, for the price of $50 all the way to the more experienced stylist for around $80. So overall I was very happy with me experience at Soon, and when I need another trim Ill certainly go back for their $15 between cuts trip to stay looking sharp.

bring tip in cash if you plan on paying with card.

I love this place.  The decoration is adorable (previous reviewer said it right, "white with splashes of pink and orange"), especially the randomly placed chemistry equipment and the plaster molding on the ceiling.  All the stylists I've met have been very friendly, offbeat, and interesting; they know their stuff, too.  You can choose from a variety of levels of experience depending on how much you want to pay.  I find the $70 range to be great.

This is the kind of place you can go if you're looking for a haircut or color fix that's left-of-center but not necessarily a complete whack job (no pun intended).  There's also a larger location in Chelsea, where I've been once or twice when I couldn't book the stylist I wanted at the East location.

I love this salon.  Anne isn't there anymore but she was the greatest stylist I've ever had!  The place is awesome... the shampoo guys and girls give the greatest head/neck massages... and I've always been able to get a time that I needed... they have also been quite forgiving when i've been late (it's a disease!)

Having the worst day ever when I decided I needed to do something to change my mood.  Called my regular haircutter and found out he was booked all week.  Took a look at Yelp and decided to call Soon...

Two hours later I was getting an aromatherapy head massage/shampoo that completely changed my outlook on the world.  And then the haircut - Liz was terrific, figured out how to cut my hair to make it look better than it's looked in ages.  She was also interesting to chat with, which was a pleasant change from the Japanese speaker who'd been doing my hair recently.

It's been about three weeks and I am getting regular compliments on my hair.  I'll be back for sure.

For the love of Annie!  She is why 5 stars were invented.  For the first time in my life, I love my hair.  I started going to Soon about 2 years ago.  The cashier at Anthropologie had the best hair cut I had ever seen on a curly haired girl like me.  I asked her who she saw and the next day I was at Soon Beauty Lab with Shelly Rose.  She was amazing and the cut was everything I wanted- retro, feminine, easy and fun!  I saw Shelly 2 more times and then she moved back to Massachusetts.  Oh no!  She recommended I start seeing Annie at Soon.  Let me just tell you, ladies, Annie has taken my hair to the next level.  I have sent people off the street to her after getting compliments on my hair from strangers.  Many of my friends and co-workers have become Annie regulars.  Even my elegant friend, Gretchen Fenston, who is regularly featured in the Sunday Styles section of The New York Times, now sees Annie like clockwork!  I love Soon Beauty Lab.  Their prices are very reasonable.  They have 2 convenient locations and Annie works at both!  I give Soon Beauty Lab and my girl Annie my highest recommendation.

I must have started going here towards the end of my NYU undergrad career, so that's probably 99 or 00.  I'm always looking out for new places to get my hair cut and colored, and the color scheme caught my eye--white with splashes of pink and orange.  I fell in love at first sight, and after my first cut, I loved it for sure.

This place, along with Hair Mates, is one of my constants.  Prices are reasonable, and I've always been happy with the results. Love love love.

I am new to the neighborhood and have been looking for a regular salon, and after a few false starts I tried Soon on 11th Street. I got a wonderful cut with a newer stylist for $50. Even though she is 'new' to Soon, she has a fair amount of experience from other salons and did a great job. I will be back.

This was the only time I've ever payed someone to dye my hair.  I aspired to something fancier than the box-dyed red that I've done myself.   For 90 bucks I got a big fancy smelly double application of goop...  And presto it looked just like I dyed it myself.   The stylist sheepishly acknowleged that it was about 6 shades darker than what i had asked for.  And she did offer to fix it if i came back in a few days.   I didnt go back.  I did get compliments on the cut, which i liked , but still.  It was a let down because i was really excited to see what kind of transformation money could buy.    not much here.

I wish I were still close to this salon.  It's comfortable and cute with reasonably priced cuts and attentive stylists.

My stylist washed my hair with a great scalp massage, and talked to me at length about the cut I wanted.  She could tell I had done a bit of damage with color and hot irons, and advised me on how to make it healthier.  She was really friendly, communicative, and careful while cutting.

Touch up trims are only $10 after your full cut.

UPDATE: Soon is awesome, and its lower east side location is tops, with its cool vibe! But sadly, Janessa moved to Arte Salon, I just got my hair colored with her last week, so FYI.  I know this because she is a friend of mine and keeps me in the loop of where she is working.

Janessa does my hair when she is in New York. We became friends a few years ago, and I started going to her. I'm glad I did, because I was skipping around looking for a good hair dresser!  She is really good at coloring, as well as cutting. When she left NYC for a few years, I was at a loss, trying to find someone that can BOTH cut and color, which has been a difficult task. But now she is back, and I can keep my hair a nice shade of red all the time, since she somehow makes red hair not fade on me *ok its not magic, i think she puts color, and gloss, but regardless, she knows what she is doing...Go to her, but don't steal her away to another town, because I now have nice hair again!

When I moved to New York City I realized it was time to upgrade my Supercuts 'do. I spotted this place in my neighborhood and decided to give it a whirl.

I've seen both Anne and Jenn and been really happy my haircuts. They listened to my concerns and gave me what I wanted, while taking into consideration what my hair could handle. I have extra-fine pencil-straight hair so I take precision cutting pretty seriously. The one time I wasn't completely satisfied with my cut I went back to Soon and they seemed happy to fix it, no charge.

Soon has a really fun vibe, good music, stylish but unpretentious employees, and there's always a cute dog running around. You'll get a scalp massage when your hair's washed, and cuts range from about $50-$90 depending on what level stylist you use. Mine were in the $70 range so I can't report back on the entry-level. If I ever take the leap and get bangs, I'd go here for the $10 between-haircut touch-ups.

There's a location in the West Village too, they've got you covered on both sides of town.

I had an absolutely terrible experience here.  I came in with a great cut that had grown out and asked the haircutter who had been assigned to me to follow that cut.  She did a terrible job, thinned my hair in the wrong places and left heavy pieces without any styling at all. I left hoping I could blow it into some kind of shape.  The next day I was so unhappy that I called for a fix -- a manager called me back promptly and was nice about setting up another appointment, although I was surprised to hear it was with the same haircutter but she said "That's how they learn".
So when I returned for my fix, I was APPALLED by how full of attitude this same haircutter was.  She plunked me down in the chair, told me my hair 'couldn't go the way I wanted it to" (although I HAD the cut when I came in!) and then she quickly ran a razor through my hair, thereby ruining any chance of it growing out correctly.
She was nasty and confrontational about whole thing and the  WORST part was that they charged me $40 for a blow dry at the end of the session.  I would NEVER recommend this place.  There are many great hair places in New York, and Soon would have to be much, much better to have this kind of attitude!

my first non-restaurant review!!  not that you care.  but on with the review...

for all you guys out there who refuse to pay more than $15 for a hair cut...i don't blame you.  i used to be one of you.  that was until i realized my hair was an f-ing trainwreck.

cue the spectacular stacie.  i made my first appointment with her over two years ago, and have never let anyone else so much as touch my hair since.  stacie not available?  i'll wait.  stacie passed away?  i'll never get a haircut again.

you have to realize that my hair can be really messed up.  it's thick...sort of curly in some areas...but not really...the back of my hair grows exponentially faster than the sides and top...and areas seem to jut out if cut too short (yes, i'm available, ladies).

now that i think about it...she pretty much has me by the balls considering she's the only person who knows exactly how to tackle my hair.  whether i want it shaggy or short, she's been dead on everytime.  well played, stacie.

it can get a little pricey.  when i first started going there i think she was a junior stylist and it cost maybe about $50.  now she's a head-honcho stylist (my designation, not theirs) and it costs about $75 a cut.  i guess you can't put a price on awesomeness.

like i mentioned before, i've never had anyone else there cut my hair but they all seem to know their ish.  rest of the staff are always very nice and give a killer little scalp massage.

oh and they take credit cards, but you can only tip in cash.  get bent tax man!

I used to schlep all the way to Queens for a decent non-expensive haircut (even after moving to Jersey City!) but no more. My co-worker recommended Ruthie here and I am hooked and have a bit of a girl crush on Ruthie! Don't judge me, she is just that great! So go see her, and enjoy a resonably priced haircut with lots of attention to detail and what you actually want from your hair. She cuts my wavy Jew hair really well if that helps!

I love this place. I've been getting my hair dyed there for years. Everyone has been extremely nice. It's definitely a little costly, but I think it's worth it because going there is always a pleasant experience, and unlike some places if you're not happy with your hair they are more than willing to fix it without making you feel like a jerk.

I'm the first to admit it.  I have a problem.  I am a bit of a salon "ho".  I've been fighting off a case of the bad-haircut for the past 3 years or so (oddly the same amount of time I've lived in NYC... correlation?) and I've been pretty picky about the salons that I go to.  I always end up finding faults with my cuts after I get them and that may be a personal thing but I've hardly had a negative word to say after my recent trip to Soon.  I went on a friend-advised whim right before my 10-year high school reunion (I sure am ballsy) and I got so many compliments I thought people were joking me.  I explained to my stylist the reasons I didn't like my current cut and she addressed each of my concerns with her solution.  My stylist was super hip looking but not in the "holy-crap-are-you-going-to-do-that-to-my-hair" way.  I'll definitely also take advantage of the $10 in-between haircut -- what a super deal!
