Best place to dine with a big group. Everyone orders at the counter and pays for themselves. That's also the reason why this place should not be for any formal dinners. It's a nice place for a casual dinner. I was surprised at how quick the food ready. There are free refills but there are no waiters to refill your cups for you.You have to go refill them yourself at the fountains -which is no big deal anyway if you're at a casual dinner.

-BBQ Chicken sandwich. It was unquestionably the best entree of my group.

-BBQ chicken pizza. Thin pizza that got soggy from the sauce. Tasted good, but the thin crust pizza wasn't crispy at all.

-Garlic Chicken Alfredo. The dish for you if you like soupy alfredo sauce.

-Lime Grilled Chicken. Dry Chicken. Mashed potatoes -nothing better than something I can whip up at a home.

The BBQ chicken sandwich left a great impression though, and I'd definitely come back.

What better way to reward myself for running 13.1 miles??? Stuff my face with food, of course!  This has been our go-to place after running the San Jose Rock n' Roll Half Marathon.  Its conveniently located near the finish line, so you don't have to hobble to far to get your grub on.

I ordered the Chicken Coop Marsala( http://static.px.yelp.... ).  It came with 2 big pieces of chicken.  The first few bites were really good because I was starving!  But after a while, it just seemed a tad bit too salty.  The herb seasoned rice and mixed veggies were good, though.  I finished those up in no time.  Nom nom nom!

There's a nice outdoor seating area, so you can take in the warm sunshine.  There are plenty of tables, so its very accommodating for large parties.  Usually, the food comes out pretty fast, but it was a bit backed up this time.  There were a lot of runners lined up to feed their hungry bellies.

I'll be back again next year after another half marathon!

This used to be one of my favorite places in San Jose, with quality food, quick ordering, and a really easy place to dine with of large groups.  You go up to the counter, immediately pay, so no more hassle when it comes to splitting checks.

My rating dropped from a three to two stars, since the quality can vary with what dish you order.  My last few visits have been disappointing, not because of the $1-2 increases but my portions were noticeably smaller! (HULK want more food!)

These first three dishes I've ordered several times, and the other three were ones I've had just once.  They are all filling, but might not leave you with any leftovers if you have a big stomach like mine. Each dish comes with a slice of yummy warm, crispy, soft foccacia covered in tomato sauce and cheese.

1) Grilled Salmon Risotto
Salmon consistency is OK, not dry, but not rich and moist either.  I like to mix in the fish with the risotto to make it a little tastier.  I'm not sure if the restaurant just happened to be low on risotto that day, but they gave me half as much as they once gave me! Super big disappointment :(.  But sigh, still one of my favs here.

2) Skillet Chicken Carbonara
Rice and sting beans are very tasty, probably because of all the butter they use to cook it! The little tomato flower is cute, and the chicken can be a little dry sometimes.  I usually chop it up into little cubes press it into the rice.  Very tasty, and also worth a try!

3) Chicken Parmagiana
This offers a lot of different tastes, with two chicken breasts covered in melted cheese and tomato sauce, served with pesto noodles.  Yummy, and lots of taste and textures for the palate.

4) Garlic Chicken and Pesto Pizza
Decent considering this place isn't really known for making this.  Cute, filling, although so much more pricey, I may not order this again from here.  Was slightly dry, and hard from being baked a little too long.

5) Jalapeno Foccacia
Not as spicy as I had hoped, but foccacia is one of my favorite breads.  OK, and won't order ever again from here.

5) Tri-Tip Steak
I really REGRET this order.  Just a slab of meat and some soggy fries.  The description always sounds so much better!  Meat was ok, I couldn't really even tell it was tri-tip, and meat was seasoned horribly.  I basically chewed and chewed, and then I would have to swallow that bolus entirely or spit it out since it was the toughest thing either. There were so many tendons in that thing, I had to pick them out like rubber bands.  BLEGHH!

This place is good, nothing to really go wild for. A nice change up to "faster dining" and the portions are good. Calamari is pretty darn tasty here. The Chicken Caesar, was pretty standard. The Focaccia Bread that comes with every meal though is totally awesome and i would come back for a whole basket of that if they served it.

I once had the chicken with the green pesto pasta noodles. BLAHH!! never again.

The best part about this place is that if you are having your bday here and you got a large group of friends, it makes splitting the bill super easy cause everyone pays for their food before sit down. =) The Giant out door seating area makes this place great for parties with a lot of people. Id come back but i'd probably order something else.

I've been here numerous times for so many different occasions.  But it I think it has some decent food if you know and like what you're ordering.  I actually have one of these pretty close to where I live, and I want to note that this is location is better than the one near me.

I usually prefer one of the sandwiches, pasta, or maybe even roast chicken.  Don't remember be overly disappointed with the food or really amazed by it.  I think the reason I give them 4/5 is because a fill a niche that isn't too common in downtown San Jose.  I think they call it inexpensive excellence?  I don't know if it can really be deemed excellence...  but you save money here by ordering your own food and for the most part busing your own table.  Haven't been back to this specific location in quite sometime, but I do have one that so much closer to home.:)

Ol' Reliable

I work downtown, about a block from the N. Market location, and typically come here at least once a week.  There are not too many options for quick, delicious food downtown so I throw The Coop a good deal of business.

My fallback meal is the Jalapeno Chicken Focaccia, it never fails to satisfy.  Have tried the BBQ pizza and roasted chicken and was impressed with both.  Very efficient order and pickup process, lots of outdoor and indoor seating.  The line to order tends to get long around 12:30pm or so but moves quickly due to their efficient processes and multiple stations.

Came here with the sorority for a sisterhood dinner (yeh yeh..)... I ordered the side Caesar salad and it was just awful. They smothered the lettuce in a thick dressing and piled on all this cheese.. But I guess thats what I get for ordering a salad...

I just don't think this place is that great.. sorry..

I've been here a bazillion times with the hubby!! You can't go wrong here!! We've tried much of their menu including the Apple Harvest Salad, Penne Pomodoro, Chicken Marsala and their plain ol' signature CHICKEN!! The side dishes are just grand --not too salty, not too oily, nada, just right!! The hefes and merlots are excellent with their meals. The desserts are OK, and you probably wouldn't be missing anything if you skipped out.

If this is your first time going here, you must get the CHICKEN CARBONARA!! It's the best dish here!!

Sonoma Chicken Coop is a good place to go out to eat if you are with alot of friends. That way, you don't have to deal with being short on the bill or tip. On top of that, the food is really good here and it comes out pretty fast. I actually ate here on Monday, and ordered a Kid's meal because I wasn't too hungry (Yes, they let me order a Kid's meal even if I'm 22 haha). The meal was only $4.99, and I got big plate of alfredo pasta, mash potatoes, and bread. To me, it was still alot for such a small price. So at least you know, the food portions at this place is very generous and not stingy.

Another cool thing about this place is that you can sit inside or out. It's starting to get a little chilly now that Fall has hit, but they have heaters. The heaters actually do no justice in my opinion. But I'm a skinny little girl, and I get cold easily so maybe it's just me.

chicken coop never disappoints! i've been here over a dozen times and enjoyed each as if it were the very first. there is something here for just about everyone. in addition to their usual menu, there is also the daily specials. the only downside to that is if you absolutely love a dish from the specials, it's not always available when you're in the mood for it.

a good example would be the beef stew i had a few months ago. unfortunately the staff doesn't know when it'll be back, so i just check in from time to time. however, the standard menu has a lot to choose from and there are some pretty good selections on there as well. the lime grilled chicken is one of favorites, one of those meals that just can't go wrong! they also offer a good selection on desserts too.

deliciously well portioned food along with an easy going atmosphere and price tag. sounds like deal to me! now if only they could do something about the water that tastes like cleaning solution, but that's besides the point...

I've been here multiple times.  The first few times I came because I heard it was awesome.  I didn't know what to order -- I was left feeling like this place didn't live up to the hype.  But then I tried the Skillet Chicken Carbonara.

Before you 3-star givers give it 3 stars or less, you need you try the Chicken Carbonara.  It is about THE ONLY thing that's good there and its HELLA good. Everything else is A-OK.

You can go there for the salad or for the pasta but I doubt it will turn you into a return customer.

I notice the same trend with most of the other yelpers that review Sonoma.  Those that have tried the carbonara will rave, those who haven't need to try it first.

It's also a great place for large groups, they have indoor and outdoor seating.  During the cold season, they have a tent for most of the outdoor seating too.

I give it 4 stars because this restaurant has 1 excellent dish.

Seems that almost everyone in the South Bay has a raging hard-on for this place, so I thought that collective turgidity warranted a visit.

Unfortunately this place is overwhelmingly blah.  I ordered the Lime Grilled Chicken, which had dry chicken and and inedible green beans.  The green beans, were mushy, and had no seasoning whatsoever.  The rice had to be soaked with hot sauce and other condiments for it to be palatable.

Their menu is pretty diverse with pastas, rotisserie chicken, and so forth - and I'm willing to concede that maybe I just ordered the wrong thing.  Or it was just an off-dish for the chef.  But if you can't do a dish right, take it off the menu.

I'm giving it one extra star because the place is reasonably clean inside and not too nasty compared to a lot of downtown SJ places in the vicinity.

I wish I could have experienced the awesomeness that everyone else speaks of, but unfortunately this visit fell woefully flat.

Meh. For the prices you pay, I wish this were a sit down and they take your order kind of place. My bf and I got the chicken marsala and the chicken cannelloni, both about $11. He seemed the enjoy the chicken marsala. I thought the cannelloni wasn't very good though. Flat pasta noodle wrapped around a ricotta-chicken filling, sitting in a thin tomato sauce. I wish there has been actual bite-sized pieces of chicken with some texture, instead of some chicken which had been chopped up to about the size of peas. The flatbread that comes with the meal wasn't anything to rave about. It wasn't crispy and had gotten mushy where it had been resting on the plate (and I tried a bite as soon as I got my meal).

You must order only the Chicken Carbonara!  My absolute favorite dish and i order this religiously everytime i'm here- which is at least once a month!  It's tender chicken breast, with bacon, green onions and cream over rice!  One bite and you'll be hooked for life!

Sometimes, my BF will run next door to La Vic and get a bottle of their orange sauce and we'll drizzle it on our meal for even more goodness!   He really loves the rotisserie chicken here with all their sauces as well!  I guess we're both coop lovers here!

All my friends and family know I'm a die-hard chicken lover. Okay, maybe not that extreme but I've pretty much been in love since I was a kid so I knew this would be the place for me.  I've had lunch and late dinners at this place a few times already and I've been pretty content with each visit. I normally order a quarter of the 'roost-tisserie chicken with rooster booster BBQ sauce'. For sides, I've tried the rice and basil pesto pasta. The chicken is succulent and with a squeeze of lemon, it's just pure bliss. It hits the spot every time. My friend ordered the 'skillet chicken carbonara'. I'd definitely pass on that one. It was a bit too salty.

I love places that has both indoor and outdoor seating. It's really nice to just sit outside on those summer nights, eat and watch the cars drive by. I'm not surprised that it's crowded here, I mean, why wouldn't it be?

I don't know what it is, but this place is lacking the "oomph" that it used to have.

A bunch of co-workers and I used to come here on a regular basis because it was right across the street from our office building. But the nice manager who used to greet us doesn't seem to be there anymore, so there must be new management or something going on. Anyway, the food presentation isn't as nice anymore and the quality of the food is depreciating too.

I used to be a big fan of their pizza bread that USED TO come with every meal. But that bread doesn't seem to make its entrance anymore! And with their prices steadily increasing, I hope some changes will be made soon!

Pesto pasta...yummmmm!  I have been craving it, so when I was here the other day with a couple friends, I got it & a side house salad w/raspberry vinaigrette & it still came with a slice of "focaccia" (more like pizza) bread.  I was so stuffed..and after tax it was only a little over $7.

Tasty food that you receive fairly fast, big portions, and okay prices..no wonder you're packed for lunch!  Oh, and join The Coop Newsletter for e-mail coupons for this location.  I miss you Coop...bring a location a little more north (*cough cough* SM-SF area)!

The Sonoma Chicken Coop is a rather interesting experience, and the food is good... but for a restaurant that has chicken in the name, you'd think their chicken would be of better quality.

In the most basic sense, pretty much everything here at the Sonoma Chicken Coop is tasty.  Everything.  But at that, their chicken dishes aren't really the highlight of any entree that's served here.  I had one of their specials of the day, it was a grilled chicken basted in their special barbecue sauce along with some crisp fries and pork ribs.  The chicken was a bit on the dry side and the only thing that gave the chicken its delicious taste was the sauce.

While it's true that here in the United States, the sauce always makes the barbecue, the other dishes that include chicken still aren't that great.  Again, the pasta dishes have tremendous alfredo sauce, marinara sauce, and other great sauces, but the dryness of the chicken doesn't compliment the dishes that well.

All that aside, if you can get over the fact that everything here is good, with the chicken being the worst part of the restaurant, Sonoma Chicken Coop is A-Okay.  They also validate parking, and their desserts are of extremely high quality as well.

Excellent chicken place. But of course it is not only chicken they sell. The pasta is great as well. I went there today to get out of the house and had the half chicken with pasta and pesto. I loved it. I ordered the sandwiches breat to go with it, wow. Great stuff.

BTW if you park on the street on Sunday it is free. The meters don't tell you that and they have the words Except Sundays in very small writing so you can't read it and pay. What a stupid city San Jose is. I don't mean the people that live there, just the ones that charge for parking.

I went here this past Sunday to watch some football with friends and had a great time. We got there a little late, but since they had a table we were seated immediatly.  They have a good amount of tv's around though the best spot is in the corner by the door to get a view of all the games. Some cool things about Sunday morning in the bar is they have raffles during the morning for free beer, food or the unltimate prize which is the following Sunday on their couch for you and a few friends. It includes all you can eat appetizers and all you can drink beer during the entire game!   If you become a brew crew member you also get discounts on drinks. (it's free to join)

This place offers quality food for so-so prices.  I need to try more of the typical chicken dishes.  I've had the Sonoma Cobb salad, and the Chicken Caesar wrap.  Both good, although the wrap was a little too... healthy.

But my officemates like the pasta and the chicken; I must try it sometime.  It's just a tad expensive for lunch.  I do like the cheesy bread/pizza they give you though.

I was a little dissappointed by the almaden  location  a couple  times, but I still had some hope for the downtown and campbell ones. The tropical chicken salad(I am not 100% sure this is what it's called) was very refreshing- great for a nice summer lunch. I'm appreciating the use of fruit in salads a lot more lately, and the  oranges and mango slices were a nice touch here. The salad was HUGE and very filling. They've raised prices a little in the past year, but not enough for me to hold it against them yet since you can still eat here for  around $10/person. This is going back on my list of downtown san jose lunch spots....like reconnecting with an old friend. It's casual, but clean- a verye comfortable place to sit back, eat, and chat.

Also, don't order the pizza- never been great here.   I If I actually like any of the sandwiches here, I'll upgrade them to 4 stars...like I said I've been dissappointed in the past, they need to regain that extra star!

**FOR FIRST TIMERS**: No waiters. Don't walk in and sit down and expect to get any service. Go order at the front. It's like a up scale fast food restaurant.

This is my first time eating here with my girlfriend (her third time I believe). I enjoy the way to order things. I came here to meet up with a group of friends and there were some eating and some who were done. I enjoy the ordering system because you can go get more if you want without having to feel the guilt of calling the waiter over and asking for a new menu and alerting your whole table that you decided to pig out and order something else ahaha. Anyways, down to the food.

Me: 1/4 Rotisserie Chicken with Mashed Potatoes. The chicken was great and the mashed potatoes were fine.

Girlfriend: She had the Garlic Chicken Alfredo Pasta. I took a bite of it and it was a little bit too creamy for my taste. I asked her and she felt the same.

Overall: The whole meal cost us $20 altogether. I enjoyed going there for the first time (even if parking is a pain). The menu had over 30+ types of appetizers, entrees, dessert, and drinks. I really recommend this place for a change of scenery from the usual waiter serviced restaurants. The trays and the way the food is placed really reminds me of a cafeteria. Happy Eating Guys.

Ate here before checking out a comedy show at the Improv.
This place is great for large groups since you order your own food at the counter and they have plenty of seating both indoor and outdoor.
The food is also quick! I ordered the double cheeseburger, which was fine. Not the greatest hamburger ever, but not the worst. The price is fair too. I would go back, but this isn't a fine dining experience and I don't think it's the best option in downtown San Jose. Go here if you are looking for a quick, easy meal that doesn't brake the bank. Especially go here if you are heading out with a large group of people. If I go again, I will try the chicken, because, obviously that's there speciality so perhaps I can bump them up to 4 stars if I have that.

Very okay.  Reminds me too much of a cafeteria.  The idea is great in theory, but sometimes the execution is questionable.  For example, I ordered veggie risotto and got rice swimming in milk with a few veggies mixed in.  The free cheese bread/pizza is pretty good.

I love Chicken Coop! Whenever I'm in the SJ area (aka my bf dragging me to a Sharks game) I have to stop by for a meal. Sometimes I feel like I'm missing out on other new and exciting restaurants in the Silicon Valley but once I get my hands and mouth on the Coop's delicious food, it's all gravy! Some of my favs:

Skillet Chicken Carbonara - I always get this. This dish has chicken breasts with green beans, green onions, bacon and creamy sauce over herb rice. The chicken is boneless and skinless but there's still plenty of fatty goodness with the sauce. Everything is pretty basic. There are no crazy exotic ingredients in this but it's still damn good. Comfort food at its best! I'd say this kicks meatloaf's booty any day of the week.

BBQ Tri Tip Steak - Yummy charbroiled and basted steak with tangy BBQ sauce, fries and cole slaw. You can switch out the fries for mashed potatoes. So sometimes you just want a steak and Chicken Coop has plenty to choose from. A nice fancy piece of meat hits the spot most of the time but other days you just want one rubbed with BBQ sauce all over!

Dark Chocolate Fondue - The menu says "for two or more" but I could eat this all by myself! Comes with strawberries, banana, pound cake, rice krispie treats, marshmallows, ice cream, cookies. It's just a really fun dessert to eat and so much cheaper than Melting Pot.

Banana Phyllo Sundae - I could imagine this dessert being served in the fanciest restaurant with a much bigger price tag... and you know what? I would still get it everytime! It's phyllo pastry shell filled with vanilla ice cream and served with banana rum sauce. The phyllo is so amazingly fresh, crispy and hot. Combining it with the cool ice cream and sweet rum sauce creates a perfect texture of crispy, smooth, sweetness of a dessert. I think I could die happy!

Again, there are no special ingredients but the Chicken Coop knows how to work with anything and make it comforting and satisfying. Try it!

This is my favorite Sonoma Chicken Coop location, but that still does not merit more than 3 stars.  The service here is friendlier than the Campbell location.  However, the food is still about the same, which is only decent at best.  I had the bbq chicken pizza and did not really care for it.  There was just nothing special about the crust.  The good thing about this location is that there is lots of outdoor patio seating, so you can enjoy a pitcher of their beer while lounging in the sun.

The 3 of us grabbed a quick bite here last night before heading over to the GREEN DAY CONCERT! It's been a while since I've been back and I usually order the salmon risotto. Wanting to try another menu item, I ordered the spaghetti with meatballs and sausage. Big mistake - the dish was dry and tasteless. Then again, I should have known better. This place is known for it's chicken, hence the name, and not it's Italian fare. My friends had the 3 cheese and pepperoni pizzas. Both looked pretty greasy and not too appetizing. Service is always served with a smile and I love the outdoor seating area. I'd probably give it another chance when I'm in the neighborhood but I'm hoping their quality of food takes a step up. ::sigh::

My then Fiance and now husband introduced me to this place, and I went to pick up dinner last night.

I ordered the Salmon Risotto - lightly baked salmon served over a mixed vegetable risotto which was very tasty.
And for the hubby, I ordered the all white meat half chicken with green beans and a cesar salad.
For Dessert I opted for the butterscotch bread pudding.
I ordered all of this fare to go. And when they pack the food up, they really hook you up with slices of cheesy onion foccacia which is absolutely divine, soft and melts-in-your mouth. The half chicken all white meat was two large whole breasts of chicken and a massive amount of green beans. That meal is covering my hubbys lunch for today. The dessert was delicious. The bread pudding is soft, tender and is fabulous with the butterscotch cream that it is lathered around it.  And they also give you a serving of vanilla bean ice cream. They pack everything meticulously and with care, which is why I'm rating them a 5.

Great Place to have lunch if you're broke, in a rush, starving, having lunch with a picky eater & looking for some delicious tasting food!

They have weekly specials and desserts to literally die for. You have to try the Chocolate Fondue, it comes with all kinds of fruits, cookies, marsh mellows, etc. to dip in melted chocolate. It is definitely enough to share. The only down side is (especially at lunch ) it can be a bit crowded.

I love chicken. I love pasta. This place is a winner for anyone who likes either. It seems like everything here is delicious.

For what I paid I got so much food. (Look at the picture I uploaded and you'll be amazed too.) They give you so much food for what you pay for that you're almost compelled to give extra tip. This Sonoma Chicken Coop is pretty smoothly operated, with the workers always doing something and ensuring fast table clean up and even faster lines for placing orders.

A good place for those who want to have a nice night out with friends without spending too much or dressing up too nicely.

Not sure if it's my pregnancy food aversions or not, but this place grosses me out. Some of their salads are ok--BBQ chicken especially.

Avoid the hamburger at all costs. I live very local and am lazy to venture out of a 1 mile radius for food (and Peggy Sue's had 3 strikes, they are out)..so I saw they had a hamburger on the menu and was happy to try it.

A hamburger here is Foccacia bread, two beef patties, and some cheese. And it's HUGE with no flavor and mine was delivered cold.

Everything here is around $10 which is way too expensive for the quality and taste. All my co-workers love this place and pass around the two for one coupons frequently. I send mine to the Deleted Items Folder in Outlook.

Next to th Market parking structure.

Ordered the walnut and chicken salad and the Sharks chocolate hockey puck with chocolate sauce, mousse, anglaise and vanilla ice cream.  $17. Salad was great, there is extra dressing at the condiment area.  The choco puck cake is too hard and dense, when you cut through it, the mousse squeezes out, the whip cream and ice cream isn't too sweet combined with all the chocolate.  Order at the counter, given a buzzer and you go up to the counter to pick it up when you are buzzed. Plenty of seating inside and out on the back patio.

The food is good and reasonably priced. Decent selection of items to choose from. Portions have always been plentiful. Free refills.

Last time I went here, I got a pretty big chicken parmasean, noodles and a piece of bread for $11.

The line to order goes pretty quick, even if your 20-30 people deep. The one drawback is finding a place to sit sometimes. The place is really crowded before a Sharks game or event at the HP Pavilion..

I think their head chef, or the sou chef, or even their cooks should try their dishes before handling it out!

If you're looking for a fun, casual place to eat out with a bunch of friends, you should consider this place.  The portions are genearl, they have outdoor patio seating, there is usually a live band playing upstairs, and it won't break the bank.  The location in downtown Campbell is really convenient for strolling around afterwards.  It's not the best food I've ever had, but for the price, it's not bad.

No good.

I went to the Campbell location but only had dessert.  Now I can finally comment on the chicken.

I shared a half chicken ($9.99) with my friend it was really dry.  This is the case with a lot of American chains but come on, even Boston Market does it better!  They basically compensate by drenching a lot of BBQ sauce on top but once you run out, it becomes a sad time.  I also had a pizza flatbread type appetizer which tasted like it came from the freezer and prepared in a microwave.

It's pretty much a self-serve after you order type thing.  Everything you need (utensils, take out boxes, soda, condiments) are all left for you to grab.  The only thing going for this place is that there's a small patio on on one side and a big patio on the other for sunny days.

Over the years I have tried different dishes here, some better than others. This location is very nice, it has a nice out door seating area and plenty of parking. The staff for the most part is really nice. Everything is clean.
I have eaten the sandwiches, they are pretty big in size and they are generous with the portions. Last time I went to the SCC in Campbell I discovered the BBQ pizza, it is really that I am addicted. So of course when I went to this location I ordered the same thing.... oh what a disappointment! The pizza was small, the bbq sauce was dry, the crust was very very thin. So in other words for future references I will stick to sandwiches and pastas. Other than that, fun place to celebrate b-days or any type of get-togethers!

Some people say that this place is soooo good..... Some people also say that this place is sooo overrated.

I went ahead and tried this place out and I thought to myself.....
Not too bad...

I recall just chillen on a sunday afternoon eating in the back outdoor seating... soaking in the atmosphere with some decent food. :)

I would definitely come back.
