3 reviews for Sonny Newman's Dance Hall
Shockingly, we ran out of time for dance classes before our wedding, so Kyle S. promised that he'd take me afterward. While flipping through the Entertainment Book we found a 2-for-1 coupon for the 8 class tango series at Sonny Newman's Dance Hall. Viola! A week later we were in the dance studio, out of our element, in the wrong shoes, ready to learn.
Classes are taught by Sonny and his wife, Nancy, and they are dolls. So kind, and funny, patient, and CUTE! Not that this is a cakewalk, people - even though it's a recreational class they love the tango, and Sonny especially wants you to learn the technique and learn it properly. But they're not task masters about it; they'll help you learn, and they want you to do well! If they notice you're struggling they'll come rescue you; usually all it took was one "deer-in-the-headlights" look in Nancy's direction and over she'd come. And ladies, if you can't dance well with Sonny, you can't dance, period.
I absolutely loved it. They teach two beginners classes and two intermediate classes a week, and if you're uncertain about your schedule you can get a punch card and go whichever day works for you. My husband and I have differing levels of competency on the dance floor, but we both learned a lot, grasped some things easily, and struggled with others. I feel amazingly proficient for a beginner who only took eight classes; you learn some fancy steps in only eight weeks!
It was a great date night, though you don't need a partner to go - the majority of the students come alone, and generally you rotate partners. (Though if you want to stay with your significant other, that's fine, too.) As Sonny is fond of saying, the Argentinian tango, when done properly, is a "delicious" dance. So it is.
IMO, the best dance floor in Seattle, hands down. Sonny and Nancy, the owners and teachers of Tango dance classes there, really take great care of their floor and really care for the dance hall in general. I've been dancing at their hall for probably about 5 years now. I even run a dance there twice a month, and the space is sooo great. Great for classes, dance practice, live music, etc.
And I guarantee you, you won't meet two nicer people than Sonny and Nancy Newman.
THE place to go lindy hop swing dancing in Seattle. At least on Mondays nights. 9:30pm to midnight, as I recall. They may have a class beforehand. People were friendly and I had some fun dances there after a full, non-stop, weekend dancing with the Seattle Lindy Exchange. Sonny's is a great stop for swing dancing after spending time dancing earlier at Waltz etcetera about 100 blocks north of Sonny's (7:30pm-9:30pm on Mondays). http://www.waltzetc.com/
The Savoy Swing Club should have more info on the Monday night dance at Sonny's.

Jodi Fleischman hosts the 3rd Saturday night Salsa which should be fun, knowing Jodi. I've only been to the Monday night lindy hop once, though.
