Damn those Sonic commercials! Too bad everything isn't as good as they look.

The watermelon slushy is the BOMB! I haven't gotten any other flavor cause you shouldn't mess with a good thing. I also like the Reese's Sonic blast, its similar to Mickey D's McFlurry but with whip cream and lots of Reese's, yum! But the sandwiches and burgers are pretty standard, dull and don't impress. If you're hungry try the chili cheese coney, its huge! Another note, skip the yucky fries and get tots instead or the extreme tots, yum yum yum :)

Car hop service takes FOREVER! We waited almost twenty minutes and the place wasn't even half packed. The area is busy cause its a big trucker and food stop for the roadies. And ewww, Ripon smells like cows and the bathroom is dirty!

Son had baseball tournament at Mistlin Fields (very nice by the way, except for the old bag who was in such a hurry to get into my bathroom stall that she not only pushed me out, but ended up closing the stall door on my fingers - but judging by the sound and air quality control shortly thereafter, she needed that stall more than me!)

Okay, I was stoked about going to Sonic - especially after the carload of 16 year-old baseball players I had with me talked about it almost the whole hour-plus drive up.  (Note to self:  It's okay to drive them up, but wear nose plugs on the way back because those boys aren't going to smell too good:)

Okay, okay, onto the review:  Son ordered the chicken sandwich and liked it.  Two boys ordered slushies.  They seemed to like them (we lost track of one boy at the Sonic).  Another boy ordered the double cheeseburger and fries.  I ordered the Island Fire burger (a double burger with pepper jack cheese and habanero island sauce), along with an order of onion rings.

The batter on the onion rings was sweet - almost as if the onion rings had been dusted with powdered sugar - although they weren't.  One of the boys described them as 'onion funnel cakes'.  Too sweet and weird for me.  The burger could have been really really good, except that their 'habanero' sauce was sickly sweet, with very little 'island fire'.  (For the record:  I'm not a terriyaki pineapple burger person - I don't care for a lot of sweet stuff on my burgers unless it's sweet mayo).  In hindsight, I should have stuck with a regular cheeseburger - I know I would have enjoyed that.

Would I go back to Sonic?  Sure - for a regular cheeseburger and fries.  I could tell that I would like their regular cheeseburgers.  (I can now watch the Sonic commercials without being tortured for lack of one near me.)

Sonic wasn't bad, I just wasn't expecting my items to be overly sweet.  Oh, but wait - the iced tea was really really good (with no trace of sweetness), and hit the spot after a double header in humid, smokey conditions.

Oh, and yeah:  Pay attention to those 'No U-Turn" signs - the cops have great vantage points and will nail you!  (Actually, I wasn't nailed, but the team manager was - po thang.)

I keep wanting to like Sonic.  Their commercial make everything look sooooo good.  Unfortunately, I am left disappointed.  Service is great -- a bit of a wait if you use the car hop service and the food is lack luster.  I think my last visit will be the last.

Maybe it's because I've been sitting in the car or eaten road-crap earlier in the day, but seemingly every time I pop into this Sonic, I can guarantee that my body will be flushing itself out within the hour. It's not a bad thing, once you come to expect it and prepare yourself for access to a bathroom. The food is nice. It's what you expect at a place like this. But when I grow up and start getting constipated on a more frequent basis, I'll just move closer to this place so I can clear out on a regular basis. ..ha ha. Get it? Regular!!

Why Ripon?  Because I'm on my way to Vegas for a friend's bachelor party.  I hope this will be one of many entries on this road trip.  First stop was here.  A little trucker town before Modesto.  It was everything I hoped it would be.  Smell like cows.  Dirty bathroom.  The food, standard fastfood.  I don't to Sonics much so this was a once in a lifetime opportunity.   I ended up ordering a corn dog.  It was quite tasty.  To frink a peach iced tea.  Too much ice.  It wasn't a slushy.  But hits the spot nonetheless.  Next stop Rally's in Fresno.
