Loved it! Why aren't there more Sonics in the bay area? I love their menu, they have so much to offer. I'm not really a huge fan of fast food, but this is a nice change to the typical fast food chains you see popping up everywhere. I like In N Out, but wish they had more stuff on their menu. The food itself at Sonic's is nothing spectacular, but great to see some thing outside of the norm. Personally I thought the hamburgers were horrible.
Here's a few things I would like to see more often:
1) Tater Tots. Why aren't there more restaurants out there that offer these delicious potato treats? I'm getting pretty damn tired of french fries. Chili cheese tater tots... Double win!
2) Drive In Fast Food. Not a huge fan of eating in my car, but I think being able to pull into a parking spot and order your food is better than your typical drive thru. You don't have to keep your car on thus emitting less pollution into our atmosphere.
3) Chicks on roller skates delivering your food. Great concept, they did it in the 50's, how come we don't see this more often? Liability?
4) Frozen Drinks. Sonic's has a great selection of drinks, from slushes, to milk shakes, to soda. Why don't more fast food joints sell these beverages that go so well with alcohol?
BTW, to the girl who wrote a review complaining about not knowing how to order... did the big red button on the menu not stand out enough for you? Sorry, if I was an employee, I would have sat there and laughed at you too. Is this not obvious enough for you? http://static.px.yelp....
What, American Canyon is too good for an everyday value menu? Really? The .99 chicken strip sandwich is one of the main reasons I love Sonic. I had to settle for a regular over-priced, bland chicken sandwich...on a wheat bun, yak!
I'll give you 2 stars for decent service and amazing onion rings but c'mon....

How do you spell Sonic's: G-L-U-T-T-O-N-Y.
I eat fast food because my child is anti-healthy. I know, why should I encourage it? Yet, I was on my way to Napkintown and we were both hungry. I never been to Sonic's.
I disagree that the ordering process was as easy. How the hell was I suppose to know to push the red button? I stood there for too long and yes, I had no idea how it all worked at Sonic's. And why were the employees having lunch not kind enough to say what to do? Don't look at me with your condensing looks and smirks like I'm suppose to know what to do. Must just be me who actually helps people even when I'm on break. THANKS CUSTOMER SERVICE!
I ordered for my daughter the Chicken Strips kid meal with fries and a cherry slush. For me, the Chicken Club Toaster Sandwich with Tots (742 calories, 1742 mg sodium, 410 fat calories). This was the first place where, although the food went down fine and the taste was tasty, that I actually felt like regurgitating the food (TMI).
This is not a place for someone who just keeps it semi-simple when it comes to fast food. I don't know if I can stomach the food again because of how unbelievably bad I felt after. My poor daughter had to hear me groan for almost a half an hour because I felt that sick.
Don't know if I'll be back. My thighs are saying no, but my head saying maybe.

I would give this place a -5 stars if I could.
DON'T COME HERE UNLESS YOU WANT TO LOSE A FEW POUNDS. I had a few bites of my chili cheese tots yesterday and now I am still regreting on it. I've been suffering from FOOD POISONING since 2 hours after the 3 tots that I had. So glad I didn't eat the rest, I probably wouldn't be alive to write this right now.
STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!

I'm gonna have to give Sonics a 2.5, and I'm gonna bump it up to a 3 for this review.
Sonics is one of those things a person from the Bay Area sees on TV and is like ZOMGLETSGOTOSONICS! It ain't that great, but it's definitely worth it to see a girl on skates giving your order.
FOOD
---Extra Long Coney Island Dog
This chili cheese dog was good, but not anything out of the ordinary. The hotdog bun was flimsy, but the chili cheese was super good. My boyfriend had trouble trying to figure out how to eat the thing, so TAKE NOTE: look for the perforated tabs. For the hotdog itself: I'm all about girth & length rather than just... length. Nawmean?
---Chili Cheese Taters
THEY RAN OUT OF ONION RINGS. AT 6PM. WHYYY?? The taters reminded me of something I would eat in a school cafeteria. Is that bad? I salvaged what I could from the chili cheese by tossing my fries in. WIN! I'd rather get hash browns at McD. 'Nuff said.
---Corndog
YESSSSS. I've been craving corndogs for a while. The breading wasn't overwhelming, and for $1, how could you go wrong? I wish the corndog itself were bigger though... *sigh*
---Popcorn Chicken
Why I ordered this? I have no idea. They were slightly dry, but the honey mustard saved them.
---Breakfast Sausage Dipper...things...
Eat them without the dipping sauce / gravy thing. They're better that way.
---Ocean Water & Strawberry Limeade
I tried OW because my cousins told me to. It is basically SPRITE W/ COCONUT FLAVOR. Not that great... It wasn't as epic as I wish it were :( I'd rather get a strawberry lemonade at Red Robin.
Overall, the food wasn't as epic as I wished it to be. It's a great experience, eating in a car and ordering from a window... asking the roller skating girl if she's ever fallen before. But I wouldn't go bananas over coming here again. I'll only drop by if it's on my way home...

I get excited about Sonic because I've seen millions of their commercials yet there were never locations close enough to me to even try out their food...in fact, the last time I was at Sonic was 4 years ago en route to Vegas and since my parents live about 2 miles away from this location, I made it a fact to check it out.
Drive-in ordering is really easy (especially with the credit card swiper) but deciding on what to get can be hard, especially with all these drink options. First of all, what is Ocean Water? I'm intrigued! I first tried their Banana Cream Pie shake which really does taste like the real thing and when I found they have happy hour on drinks from 2-4pm (1/2 price), I came back and tried their strawberry cream slush which was better but not as refreshing as their cherry limeade. I really want to go back again before I go back to Portland.

OMG c'mon you guys, it's fast food, it has unique menu offerings, and its a fun and different experience! Just had a plain old cheeseburger and it was definitley tasty! You can't get too picky when you are paying 5 or 6 $ for a fast food meal. Maybe not quite up there with In n Out but definitely superior to Mickey D's. I was so excited to stumble upon this place when driving back to SF area, like others wonder why we see the ads but no Sonics to be found.
YUM! Sonic commercials work.
++ | Strawberry Limeade |
Sparking limeade w/fresh strawberry bits. It's so perfect for a hot day. Reminds me of aqua fresca, but w/the convenience of a drive-thru!
++ | Push to order buttons & girls on roller skates |
Novelty, check!
-- Sonic Burger
Reminds me of a sad McD happy meal assemblage.. looks like it would do better as a plastic kid's toy rather than food.
-- Onion Rings
Got quite a bit of sweetness to the breading and is 10x greasier than its equivalent at Carl's or BK.
This may be TMI, but the Ocean Water in a Rte. 44 size turned my poop blue. There. Just had to get that out there.
Despite changing the color of my innards and whatever comes out, Ocean Water is one of my favorite things about Sonic; how can you go wrong with blue coconut-flavored Sprite?
The food is ho-hum. It's like a bad Wendy's in my opinion, but I think everyone already knows that already, because everyone comes here for the drinks. They come in gargantuan sizes and are very cheap. Favorites of everyone I talk to include the cherry limeade, and their fruit smoothies.
I really wish there was one closer to San Francisco. The lack of artificially-colored beverages is really killing me here.
I was drawn in by the commercials, I'll admit. So when the boy suggested stopping here on our way back from Pope Valley, I conceded, because i was burning with curiosity about the idea of driving into a parking spot where they bring you food.
Don't let the commercials fool you. Don't let curiosity get the best of you. Sonic is nothing more than a fast food chain with a good advertising department. I got very dry popcorn chicken, and my Sonic blast was virtually unfinishable (which is a FEAT considering how much I love ice cream). I had it with Butterfingers, and the whole thing was so sickly sweet I didn't know what to do with myself. I've had the Butterfinger McFlurry's at McDonald's and they weren't this bad. I do like how they offer tater tots instead of french fries, but that didn't compensate for how godawful everything tasted. I also tried the chili tater tots, and one of the burgers, and they were totally goopy with sauce and just overall pretty disgusting. A waste of a meal.
Don't be fooled! Trust your instincts! It's not as good as it looks in commercials, and just because there isn't one near you (for most of the population) that doesn't mean you should stop if you see one while on your way somewhere!
I think SONIC is my official trailer park trash fast food restaurant. People are fat, disgusting, licking their fingers, unshaven, unshowering in their cheap shitty dented American cars. I feel like I want to BARF.
Two stars for the friendly yet incompetent staff..
In a moment of weakness and a childhood flashback I wanted my slushy and a snack. The drive thru gal was cool and repeated our order back several times. In our haste to get out of the land of trailer park trash and get back onto 680, we discovered the order was totally wrong. Out the window at 80. I hope one of the varmints had a nice meal that night.
YELPERS Please learn some basic manners. DONT LICK YOUR FINGERS IN PUBLIC. IT IS TRULY DISGUSTING AND REPULSIVE TO THE FELLOW PATRONS AROUND YOU.

Where the hell else can you get tator tots as a side?!
LOL, the grilled chicken bacon sandwich was good, but the Cherry Limeade was off the hook! I would definantly come here on a regular basis if I lived closer.

People keep talking about Sonic so since I was in the area (and unlike some friends willing to make the 35 mile drive from Oakland just for Sonic) I decided to brave the long drive through line for a snack. Also - I thought of all the commercials with the cold refreshing drinks and since the AC in the car wasn't working it seemed like the perfect solution.
The drive through line took forever!! Apparently a lot of people had the same idea at 4:00 in the afternoon. Since I couldn't decide what to drink (or eat), I ordered a lot:
- a corndog (tasty. It's been a while since I've had a corndog and this one was thoroughly cooked so full rating on that. There isn't anything worse than a corndog where the meat is still frozen)
- popcorn chicken - dry and bland. KFC's is so much better.
- watermelon slushy - this was delicious and refreshing
- diet cherry limeade - blech.
- lemon berry slushy - too sweet.
I don't get the hype ... but the food delivery on roller skates is cool.

OK ... now one thing you should know about it is I DON'T drink soda. I haven't had a drop in 3 years. I've heard so much of the Cherry Limeade that I had to get it. It was very nice and refreshing ..... but MADE WITH SODA!!! I couldn't believe I drank it ... and drank it, and finished the whole thing. All that time without soda down the drain. Now I have to start over again. But if it was made with soda water, versus Sprite, I think I'll get it more often.
Still the food is not bad ... I like the Chili Cheese Tater Tots, but the Frito Chili Wrap could be better with a hefty dose of salsa.
I again avoided a near death brain freeze experience.

Alright so it wasn't bad, but really I didn't think it was that great. Same ol' fast food feel where you have your choice of burgers, breakfast sandwiches and fried sides. I guess what's appealing is the whole "drive-in" experience. It's different but if you ask me, different in this case doesn't mean it's better.
Take it from a Mom. EAT OUTSIDE OF YOUR CAR so you don't have to worry about the grease stains and soda spills. Eugh.. the smell of whatever your ordered just kinda sits there. No amount of febreeze will help mask it.

Lol.... some might think that your crazy to to drive from oakland to american canyon for a burger but i guess it depends on your acquired taste for a specific food. Me and my girlfriend was on our way back from the vacaville outlets when the sonics commercial popped in our heads and and thought why not we're already out this way so lets go. When we pulled up we were like to kids at toys r us lol..... no lie we were estatic by the whole orders on rollerskates thing they have a huge food selection too. I can say it was worth the drive oh yeah you have the option to pull into your own drive thru section. Its like a portable drive thru pretty cool. The burgers are delicious. So if your willing to take the drive and until they bring a location closer to oakland im still a sonics fan, plus they have a huge soft drink selection also.

Ok, Sonic was the stop on the way back from the North Bay event. Well, it was for Mrs N, Mary Ann, and me. Found out it was also for Crystal, Trey, Jamie, Maya. Trey gave a thumbs up, but I think that was only for the camera. Got the wobble hand for the eats. Andrew and Catherine also stopped by, but that was before the event. The word was Sonic does not mix well with wine.
I gotta say, Sonic is good in a bad way. All the Limeaids and slushes and blends, and wicked indulgent sugar coma drinks are totally what this place is about! I will check the haters here now. I love the tots. I love the Chicken Club TOASTER Sandwich! Love affair good! I shouldn't enjoy it like I do. I can't tell you what the other foods taste like. They don't matter to me.
I've been to a half dozen locations, but this was the first where they used roller skates for delivery. My wife begs to differ, but I'm right as per usual. ;-)

Listen to me when I say this: IT IS NOT ABOUT THE FOOD. Actually, those tots are pretty good. But seriously, it is about the limeades, slushes, and deserts.
I gorged myself on chili cheese fries, a vanilla cone, some helpings of my boyfriends reese's blast (even the whipped cream was delicious), and a grape slush. The cheese fries ranked the lowest; I've definitely had better. Everything else though?
My tastebuds were in heaven. Especially because of that grape slush. Everyone is just hating because they didn't know the correct items to order.
For real.

Dr. Pepper with soft, perfect Sonic ice is worth 5 stars alone. But that + an excellent server + a delicious burger + reliving memories of hot summer days at Sonics while growing up in Texas is MORE than worth 5 stars.
To those of you questioning the quality of the food, by all means PLEASE continue on as you have to McDonald's.

This is the second time I have been to a Sonic one being in Bakersfield and the second time being at American Canyon(just call it Napa) and I thought it was good to satisfy late night hunger which I had at the moment. I'd say the meal that I got was good but not great. I had a double cheeseburger with a cherry limeade(very good), with tots and my friend had a chicken sandwich with fries. The only thing I didn't like is having to go through drive through. So I didn't get to push the button and have some lonely sonic worker walk out with our food with their pretend smile.
Anyway it satisfied a late night hunger and maybe one day or night I'll go back to maybe just get a cherry limeade but we'll see if crossing the bridge will be worth it next time.
Never been to a Sonic's prior.. but once i heard it was in Vallejo, I decided to check it out.
I do love the concept, but the service was a bit long. alot of people, so understand that. 3/4 of the food I ordered was good. I think the cheese fries were kinda garbage...
but some of the food was decent.
This is my SECOND Sonic review.
Why are Sonic locations always in random locations away from major cities? What is up with that? My friends & I have this horrible Sonic streak. We always crave the "late night" Sonic fix & would go hella out of the way to get some dessert or fast food just because it's Sonic. Don't get me wrong, in the day time, it's chill, but I guess we're not cut out for night runs.
Well anyway, tonight, we thought we got there before it closed because there was the lot was packed. We parked & sat at the eating section stoked to be finally in the presence of "late night." We pushed the buttom & after waiting about a minute, an automated voice recording told us, "Sorry, we are having some technical difficulties, please press the button again in 10 minutes," or something along those lines. We waited 10 minutes, then pressed it again, & got the same automated message. It started to get super chilly, so I went back to the car with my friend & clicked the button there.
This one said something along, "Sorry, we are closed at 8pm, but our drive thru is open." Something like that.
Okay? Why hadn't any of the employees on skates come up to us & warn us that they had closed? Why did the center take out not provide the same damn automated response as the one at the cars? Are you serious? So we waited in the drive thru line for an extra half hour to an hour, & all I wanted personally was a root beer float. We ordered 3, & they punched in the first two into our order, but when we ordered the third, they said, "Sorry, we're out of root beer." WTF. Can you not be incompetent?! So I got stuck with a nasty banana milkshake, thank you for failing.
My other friends were waiting in the center takeout, & supposedly a woman had come to the door to angrily complain about the dissatisfying service & mentioned everything I had previously mentioned about the automated responses & half hour long drive-thru. "Sorry, we're short staffed."
Worst Sonic experience ever. The only one I could tolerate would be the one in Tracy.
There's only one reason why Sonic is so great...drinks!
I'm especially a fan when it comes to their Happy Hour when most of their drinks (and I emphasize most) are at half price. For a twenty-something year old, this is awesome. I usually get the strawberry slush, but all the slushes are good. There was only one time out of the many times when they didn't mix the slush well enough so some of the powdery mix was in my drink, but I believe in second chances.
The food is just ordinary burgers and fries fast food. I rarely get the food. However, it's okay. I really like their dollar menu (You must try the chicken fingers sandwich!). Service is just like any other chain restaurant of this sort. I really like the car-park concept where you order and eat from your car in designated stalls, even though I've done it only once. Otherwise, it's all about drinks, drinks, drinks at this place.
I'm told that this is a bastardized Sonic because it has both an indoor area for patrons and a drive-thru. Apparently, Sonic purists expect only carhop service.
I'd never been to a Sonic before and was excited for the experience. We'd just eaten a ginormous meal, so I ordered a Sonic Blast, which was okay, save for the redi-whip on top.
I did enjoy the whole carhop experience and I imagine I would go back for a burger or something in the future.
We were driving around Napa in route to some wineries when we decided to take Grandmother here for a quick lunch. We ordered mainly from the value menu, with the exception being my double patty melt with pepper jack cheese. I wish I would have ordered 2 burgers from the value menu, as my grandmother's $1 burger looked great. She even liked it more than McDonald's.
It's hard to believe McDonald's charges the same for a burger far less in quality. I washed my burger down with a tasty cherry limeade, my first in a while. I enjoy the favored teas here, but I wanted to revisit my youth and love for the sweet drink.
My wife also got a child's meal-- chicken tenders-- and it was tasty as well.

Its been 6 years since I last visited a Sonic. That was in Phoenix Arizona. With all of the advertising that Sonic does you would think there was one on every corner.
I had to go look at a job in Napa today and knew that there was a Sonic near Napa. My husband, being out of work, came along for the ride with the wiener dog. He had never been to Sonic.
First of all, always get the Cherry Limeade. Its the best. I ordered the Super Sonic Burger. Just a good ole' American diner burger with all the fixn's. So good and everything I wanted, grease and all.
My husband ordered Onion Rings and Popcorn Chicken. The Onion Rings had a weird sweet tasting batter and weren't that good. His chicken was slightly cold too.
He also had a Sonic Blast with Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. He thought it was more shake like but it was more ice cream like and had to be eaten with a spoon.
Their fries are nothing special and kind of disappointing.
The burger was everything I remembered and I'm glad I could have shared it with my husband. Definitely coming back to try other stuff off the menu.

Burgers meh, coney dogs meh, fries blah, so why the three stars?
One star for the drive-in diner experience
two stars for the tater-tots
the third star is for the star of the show, their jr chili cheese frito tortilla wrap!
If you are unfamiliar with the last item, get to know it. No one has to know how much of a cheap fatty you are (did I mention dollar menu?) because they stay open late!

But you make up some points for having a good cranberry limeade.

finally i got to try sonic! after years of seeing commercial after commrecial of espn and various other channels, i was finally able to check it out. this is the only one anywhee near the bay, but it was conveniently on the way to napa. you have 3 choices on how to eat your food. drive through, drive-in, and sit-down(outdoor). there were so many cars, that i decided to just park at starbizucks and eat out. plus it was a beautiful day.
we were a little confused on how to order. inside is for employees only. you have to order through a drive-through like device. then, when the food is ready, they skate to your table/car.
i ordered the watermelon slushee. it was delicious and half-price during "happy hour". they have a ton of drink choices, but i think i made a good choice. i got a small order of popcorn chicken. it was just meh, and was truly a "small" order. the chili-cheese tots were the bomb. i liked em so much, i decided to order another large order of chili cheese "fries" this time. the tots were better, but this was good too.
my first trip to sonic = a success. here's hoping they bring one or more closer to the bay. it would be a hit..

For years, I've been watching the commercials without be able to try Sonic. Tempting me with a frozen drink that I can't get - is just mean.
The girls on rollerskates are cute. I wanted to tip her, but she skated away. My mom and I stopped here on our trip up to the Gaia (hotel- see my review). We ordered a hamburger, a salad, onion rings and jalepeno poppers.
The food was ok, but the slushy drinks were awesome. I had a watermelon slushi and my mom the strawberry. I forgot what it felt like to have a "brain freeze", not so good. We came back the next day for Peach Ice Tea Slushis. Yummy. You would think I would slow down on drinking it after the first brain freeze, but no...couldn't wait and did it again.

Starving and desperate and running late for a party I'm hosting. We just raced over here in 35 minutes, looking for something like Quizno's but my bf saw Sonic and was excited to just eat there. I pulled in to the carport, reviewed the menu in a hurry and decided on the cheesy hot dog meal. My bf ordered the same. We paid with the swipe of the card and the order came out pretty quick. Unfortunately, it wasn't tasty at all. I did choose tator tots over the French fries and that was a lot better than my weenie foot-long wiener. I also ordered a Powerade. My bf ordered an orange slushie thingy. Mine came as a slushie too even though I didn't request it like that. Ugh, whatever. Not like I'm going to come back here.
The very first time I had Sonic was on a road trip for a set of concerts. We stopped off in Redding. I had a burger in the heat. Again, disappointing. However, I'll give an extra star for the different layout (like old Mel's Drive-In) and for their commercials.
$1 menu items sandwiches are larger then McD's, Jack-in-The box, etc.
The burgers tastes more like 'In-N-Out' then Mc'Ds.
All the fruit slushes, limeades, drinks are excellent.
2-4pm is all 1/2 off.
I would also recommend the ice creams, floats, creamslushes, and blasts.
Texas toast sandwiches, tater tots, onion rings....
If that is up your alley, you probably want to come here. Not a Diet place but they have low-cal drinks.

Found myself here at 11pm last night to feed my addiction, as I drove back from the Bay Area (and it is only slightly) out of the the way for me.
Grilled cheese stuffed with bacon and pickle with a side of the country gravy for moi, topped with both a strawberry limeade AND a strawberry real fruit slushee.
A country chicken sandwhich on texas toast with a side of fries, and a cherry limeade for my dining companion who by the by had never been to a sonic before and had this to say...
(tastes my gravy with one of the fries) holy cow - that is amazing - I bet that would be good on my sandwhich too.
(takes a bite of his sammy) wow - this is good. It's almost too good to want to try with the gravy.
(tries it with the gravy) just kill me now, I've found heaven.
yes people - it's good. It's fast food, but it's good and by good, I mean down home good.

Run-o'-the-mill fastfood if you ask me. The waitresses on roller-skates are a nostalgic throwback to the days when people of color (like myself) could not patron such establishments. They serve tater tots. Their locations all seem to be frustratingly located in the middle of nowhere, which is surprising given their nation-wide television ad campaigns.
Their appeal seems to lie largely in their scarcity. Good for a novelty trip to see what Sonic is all about, but at the end of the day, it is, alas, no more return-worthy than Wendy's, Carl's, Del Taco, et al. In n' out and Chik-fil-a are still on a whole 'nother level . . . and I will be the first to report when I find something that comes close in the fast food genre.
Still, it wouldn't hurt to see more of these sprout up around town . . . a "Sonic boom" if you will.
Happy eating!

For years and years I suffered through Sonic commercials on our Vallejo cable tv. And for years and years I wondered why the hell they advertised in our area since the nearest Sonic was in Tracy or some other far off city. Finally, out of the blue, a Sonic sprouted up in American Canyon.
For months I avoided the place, worried that it's deliciousness would be too much of a temptation once I par-took (is that a word). I also imagined that there would be freakishly long waits because I thought everyone in the vicinity had also been teased by the out-of-area commercials and would flock to it!
I just didn't have it in me to wait hours for a hot dog or fight with other patrons to get a parking stall with a designated menu, roller person and drive-up speaker.
Well I guess I built this place up in my head and it just didn't meet my expectations at all. Burger sucked, hot dog lame, fries gross... only the cheesesticks seemed- just "alright".
I will say one thing though. On a hot day I love a slush! Any flavor of sweet syrup over their special ice. So yummy.
My hubby likes the cream slush which seemed weird to me but tasted good.
My son got the caramel milkshake once and it was out of this world! Thick Vanilla ice cream with a ribbon of caramel throughout.
Stick to the drinks!

Since we don't have a Sonic in the south bay, I really wanted to try Sonic Burger. This one was the closest one coming from a trip to sacramento. Well, the most frustrating thing I encountered was trying to order food. I pushed the button and was told they'd take my order in 5 minutes because they are busy. 5 minutes later I pressed the button again, and they still couldn't take my order. Several of our party gave up and went and grabbed food elsewhere. 15 minutes later, they took the order of someone who came after us. I just walked over and ordered with them.
As far as the food...not bad. Nothing special, but it was nice to try a cherry limeade and have chili tater tots. They forgot the bacon on our bacon cheeseburger too, but I didn't care at that time cause I was so hungry.
Overall, decent fast food, but the service makes it not worth your time.
