    Holy Delicious..and cheap!

Ghetto on the outside, but amazing on the inside.

I had the chicken burrito (big) $5

Great ratio of chicken to beans to rice. Shredded chicken is really tender. Flour tortilla tasted fresh made. Pico de Gallo fresh.
    Mild Sauce is really yummy.

Bf had the carne asada tacos...delicious also.
His corn tortillas appeared fresh made also. Tacos $1.75 ea. I wouldn't change a thing.

I am a lifelong supporter of Somis Market but last time I was really disappointed. My carne asada burrito had green reflective film all over it. Normally everything is fresh, with nice fresh pico de gallo and famous Somis Salsa to dump all over it but nothing could save this burrito from that green film. It looked like motor oil. The next day i didn't feel too hot.

I love you Somis Market. Please go back to having higher standards when making a burrito, especially for your regulars who KNOW you can do better.

Ah. Somis Market you lil devil, how you taunt me with your deliciousness.
There's really not much praise I could possibly give that has not already been given. But I will tell you this...

Myself & a co-worker have been eating at this establishment staple since our employers moved a department division from Woodland Hills to Camarillo in 1998. We've kept it a secret so that it would not be overrun by fellow co-workers during the lunch hour.

Approximately just under a 10-minute drive from Santa Rosa Rd & the 101, (where our company building takes up residence) we've been once a week regulars for either breakfast or lunch...Ever hear the expression, "You have to go through a bit of Hell to make it to Heaven..."? It's exactly that! The not-so-inviting street side visual of the market is a bit "hell-ish", but once the doors open, it's as if the gates of Heaven have given way [cue chorus: "Aaahhhhhhhhhhh"] & Saint Peter himself ushered you in.

As you make your way towards the "order here" counter, you'll immediately notice seating is limited as most tables are taken up by their daily regulars, then it hits you. The divine aroma of succulent meats & soups & sauces that linger within the café, make you want to order everything off the menu.

My "go-to" dishes include: Chorizo/egg breakfast burrito (huge) & Huevos rancheros (eggs over easy). Chile Verde or Carne Azada burritos & their pollo or carnitas (cooked to perfection) soft tacos. All are delicious to my palate & the corners of my mouth water slightly as I write this...even now, I have visions of my buddy shoveling what's left of his "Burrito Boat", he swears by them. It's a deep-fried burrito that's topped with cheese & their chile sauce. He also orders his Christmas tamales here. If you plan on ordering your holiday tamales here, place it early!

So whenever you hanker for a south of the border meal, head for Somis Market & find out what your fave dish may be.

Eat well my friends...another deez® review. Enjoy.

A true dive but the BEST Mexican food I have had and I have a pretty high bar for Mexican food I get from my Mom's home cooking and especially my Abuelita and my Tia's in Guanajuato, Mexico.

Somis has the best menudo I have had outside of my Abuelita's.   Awesome!  And you can grab a Mexican Coke in the Somis market next door as well as other great drinks like Sangria Senorial, Jarritos, Penafiel, Ciel, Fanta.

Probably my favorite time to go is Sunday morning early to get a big hot bowl of menuda, some home made corn (or flour) tortillas, coffee and that is a perfect sunday breakfast.

Wow I heard a lot off positive reviews form this cafe.. so I took a drive to see what was it all about ... and I was truly impressive small but good. One of the items you must try is the sope...  or anything else u will be astonished  of the great flavors that  will be waiteing for you when you get here

I would have given it 5 out of 5 but they got my order mixed up with another customer by accident so I docked them one star... but next time I come I will gladly give it back

Their breakfast burritos are AMAZING...wow. I used to work at City Hall and all of the public works guys used to praise the somis market for their delicious burritos and one day they brought some in. Outstanding! If you judge this book buy their cover you wouldn't step foot in the joint...it's worth it.

Just be careful on that road where you have to park...there have been a lot of accidents there...some have been fatal.

I know people rave about this place, since it's been here forever, but I finally went last Saturday before it closed and... I wasn't thrilled.  And I'm usually pretty gracious with stars, but for a place that's in the middle of burrito country, they should have this figured out by now.

I go in there and talk to the lady in the window and tell her this is my first time.  She says burritos are $5.40, or + .50 if you want LARGE.  Well, I want large, so she suggests the carne asada and I pick the chile verde, which is one of my benchmarks for burritos.  Plus, this will be large, so I'm excited.

I get it home over 15 minutes later, and it's still hot.
Then I bite into it, and OUCH those refried beans are hot.  Luckily there's no lettuce in it.  But then I'm eating and eating and... not tasting any... well, flavor.  Plenty of bean flavor, and once in a while some chicken.  It was just a big, tasteless burrito.  Which really sucks when you're hungry too.

I would much rather support a local place like this, but the Qdobas/Baja Fresh/Chipotles of the world really have this place beat on taste for the same price.

Maybe 2 *s is harsh, but compared to the other places, I really don't see myself ever going back, especially when the Establos Market on the corner of Lewis & Ventura Blvd is cheaper, bigger and much, much better.

Note: This review compliments of my wife:

    I LOVE SOMIS MARKET!!!

We moved to Seattle a while back and they have no idea what good, authentic Mexican food is like. I have been going to the Somis Market since before they had the cafe open next door (i.e. a very, very long time). Their food is consistant, SO tasty and unhealthy like the food should be (no Baja Fresh fan's here!). Give this hole in the wall a chance. I love the Huevos Rancheros-YUM-MEEEEEEEE for breakfast or lunch.

Why does this place have such great reviews?? I decided to go here today (a Saturday morning around 11am) and found the place packed. There were a lot of Hispanic people, so I took that as a good sign...There was a long line of people waiting to order to-go.

The actual store is split in half-- half market (chips, soda, that sort of stuff) and the other half is the restaurant. Everyone seemed to be there for the food however. I ordered the Breakfast burrito, #2 (eggs and bacon). No beans, yes rice. That's all. The lady behind me in line warned me about the large size of burrito's, and raved about this place. Once I got home, I found a moderately sized burrito..They included two sides, some salsa and also some hot sauce.

The burrito was plain, at best. Nothing but egg, some large pieces of bacon, and rice. Did I order the wrong thing? The saving grace here was the hot sauce. I was expecting great things...the Breakfast burrito seemed the cool thing to order this morning...However, after eating ths breakfast burrito, it  left me in wonder of why there is such a following of this place.

    Great Mexican food!
We moved to Somis in '82 and I moved away in '94 (I still make sure I stop in when I'm in the area), so I was practically raised on Somis Market burritos.
My favorite is the chimichanga ranchero (I like it spicy!).  Make sure you ask for a bottle of the red sauce and add it to whatever you're eating.
A little pricey for tacos and burritos, but well worth the cost!
Quite possible the largest variety of drinks I've seen anywhere!

Been there on my trips back on the West Coast and this is my go-to place to hit up as soon as I land. This place and In N Out. This place is very easy to overlook but serves, hands down, the best Mexican food I've had. Their tacos are out of this world (and crunchy!) and I love this place.

The entire establishment is modest, divided in two, the first part being a mini-mart and the second part where you can order food and eat. They have a few tables, about 10 or 15 and the atmosphere has no frills, which is fine by me. Just let me enjoy my tacos.

Prices are low, and the food comes out quickly. I'm actually headed back to Los Angeles in just over ten days and my mouth is watering at the tought of hitting up this place again a couple of times on my trip. I could easily have breakfast, lunch and dinner there. It's awesome!

The Somis Market Cafe is simply one of the best down home Mexican food places you can go!  It's not fancy, but it's good!

I grew up in Camarillo, and this was the place to go to for authentic mexican food.  Everything here is fantastic!  The tacos, burritos, chimichangas (tops!), steak picado, chile verde...everything!  Also,  the homemade hot sauce and salsa are outstanding!   It's family run, the love of food shows!

Don't be fooled.  If you drive up and see a little tiny old mini market.  This it it!  Within the market, the cafe is right to the side.  You can't miss it!  You can order for pick up or dine in.

This is a little off the beaten path from Camarillo in the heart of an agricultural area.  But, it's so well worth the trek!

Locals have been going to this place for eons!

Let Guy Fieri know!  This is well suited for his "Drive-In's, Diners & Dives" show!

PS - I believe their hours during the week at 6am-6pm.  I'm not sure about the weekends.  I believe they are closed Sundays.  Call to be sure.

I came here on one occasion to try out what the deal was with this food.  It's located within the Somis Market.  You walk through the store and order towards the back, on the right.  Finding the Somis Market is somewhat hard to find if you're not familiar with the area (it's located on Lewis Road).  You can either take Lewis Road if you're coming from Camarillo or LA Avenue if you're coming from either Moorpark or Oxnard / El Rio.

I ordered one of the burritos.  Bland.  I've had better.  Salsa, eh okay.  For what it's worth, the food was okay but nothing to brag about.  I'd rather hit up El Taco de Mexico in Oxnard and get myself a real good and tasty burrito.  Parking-wise, you park on the street.  Interior-wise, nothing special.  Would I come back?  Probably not, unless I was on Lewis Road and didn't feel like driving further to get something better.

Ok, this place borders on re-cock-u-las...

Machaca burrito is the real deal...not greasy, ready to rock. Eggs are fluffy, and the tortilla is fresh and ready to rock.

Carnitas burrito has a bit more oil in it (it IS roasted pork)  and the flavors build up nicely as you plow through... I dont eat rice, so its all the better! Smother it in tapitio and sour cream. Just bitchin

The chicken soft taco has to be the best I have ever had.. Truely, anywhere in the world, I have yet to find better.  Greasy, melted cheesy, succulent chickeny, and rolled into a couple of corn tortillas, this lil bite of heaven makes a perfect addition to any carb and lipid loaded meal you get here... Be sure to eat the taco first, there most likely wont be room after eating the burrito for more.

    Ok here it is...

I lived in oxnard for about 18yrs of my life. Out of that 18yrs, 14 of it was devoted to somis cafe food.

I'm not a greedy person, but when it comes to delicious food, i'm glad!! Not a lot of people know about this place.

The chimichanga and rice and chicken burrito, are crack!

If i was sentenced to death row, this would be for sure my last meal. Guaranteed!

All their food is fresh. I currently reside in cerritos, ca now and every couple of months i would drive to somis just for those two things. A damn burrito and a chimichanga.

Even the cafe, when i used to go their religiously, my family and i would eat at the cafe after church or shopping. Very, Very, Very nice people. Place's like this is worth tipping a lot, cause the service and the delicious mexican food.

No other cafe compares to this, sorry!

I grew up 5 minutes away from here so the taste of Somis Market conjures up many many memories of home, of savoring fresh homestyle burritos, where the meat broth is so flavorful that each bite floods your mouth with joy...of the satisfying crunch of a fresh chimichanga, slathered with fresh lettuce, cheese and sour cream.  The food is authentic and not flashy, not covered in cheap picante sauce or served up with weird unnecessary garnish -- no Mariachi band in the corner or faux adobe wall facades or nasty salsa bar offering vats of pureed nonsense -- just simple, wholesome, delicious Mexican food that is so tasty it draws the patronage of all types: from blue collar to white collar to young kids first discovering Mexican food to high school baseball teams, college preppies, total yuppies and retirees.  Each bite is a taste of love.

Specific foods I recommend (rice & beans are optional):
*Chicken & rice burritos (I like mine all-meat Chicken, so damn good but the juice will drip all over your hands and plate so you'll reek of it afterwards)
*Any of the chimichangas (deep fried burritos)
    *Taquitos (beef are the best)
    *Carnitas burritos
    *Chile verde burritos
*Chile relleno burritos (you can add a chile relleno to any other dish you order, go for it, I dare you)

Get a squirt, diet coke or whatever drink you fancy -- along with your very own Somis MKT visor -- in the attached convenience store.  Be prepared to tip the waiter.

I just found out Somis Market has been around for 30 years as of Labor Day 2008.  In honor of its three decades of deliciousness, started this facebook group: http://www.new.faceboo....  Join and tell your friends!

I'm going to give 3 stars only because there are other markets in Ventura County that are better. You can check out my other review for the better one. Bottom line, this one is good, but I really didn't find it outstanding. The staff is nice and the service is great. The food is average for an authentic Mexican joint. With that said, I would rate the food above a place like the Alamo in NP. However, they miss the small accents that I like such as the grilled veggies and great salsa that you will find in other markets.

Chicken chimichangas, breakfast burritos, and homemade salsa that you can buy in the store as well. I think this is more Americanized Mexican Food that lets say Establos Meat Market in Camarillo but it's still great

I've been going here since I was in highschool, waaaay back in the day. I think for what it is, it's good, but also, pricey for the amount of food you get. The burritos are ok in size, but don't have much inside. I still perfer it over the other Mexican restaurants in the city of Camarillo.

One of my favorite places to eat when I'm feeling nostalgic (and I'm in the area, which is rare since I now live in northern CA). Many an afterschool snack came from Somis Market, whether it was an ice cream sandwich from the Market or a combo burrito while at a baseball game at the school. Aaah, those were the days... The combo burrito isn't something I'd consider "traditional" Mexican food (I could be wrong). It's been a while but mostly I remember that it has ground beef and lettuce. I've also had the chicken and rice burrito - quite tasty. And I've had their tamales too. It has a great atmosphere - in part due to the locals and regulars that fill the place.

I came here yesterday while visiting relatives for Christmas. I practically grew up on their carne asada tacos while living in Camarillo. Eight years after my first taco, they still got it going on!

I kid you not, I have only tasted their tacos, but only because they are so good I have never even thought about what else they have to offer. I think it is around $2 per taco, but they are served in large-ish yellow corn tortillas. The actual meat has a special taste to it (I'm almost sure they season it with a bit of brown sugar), but the crowning jewel is their salsa.

You can to have your tacos with "no salsa". You can then add as little or as much sauce as you want (if you take your food to go, they will give you small cups... if you eat in, you'll get a bottle) when you get them.

Their tacos *are* greasy, so dieters beware.

The only thing I don't like is their hours. I wish they were open 24/7!
