5 reviews for Solvang Royal Scandinavian Inn
We stayed for one night at the discounted rate of $113. We chose this hotel because they offered free wi-fi. They were doing some construction the night we came so aesthetically I couldn't say much. The lobby though was very elegant, like an alpine lodge (or something like it). Staff was helpful. Room is nicely sized for a family with 2 children. There is enough room to move around. I am not giving it 5 stars because there is something wrong with the a/c in our room so they gave us a fan instead.
It was a pleasant stay.
Pretty dated motel in the heart o' Solvang.
The worst:
The rooms are small and decorated in tacky Danish garb - the bathrooms are tiny and have chipped tiles. The shower head is trickly and embarrassing and the pillows are awful (too overstuffed and hard.) No concierge, no bell hop, no room service.
The best:
Nice pool and jacuzzi - great location - next door to a pub that is very fun and lively.
Overall, it is a fun place to getaway as long as you're not spending too much time in your room! Avg. $170 a night, which is kinda pricey for what you get, but acceptable for the location.

The hotel itself is fine. It is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, hotels in Solvang. It seems clean, and the rooms are just fine. It is not really supposed to be a luxury hotel, but at $200 a night, it should be a pretty nice place. And it is nice.
But the air conditioning in our hotel room was equipped with a motion sensor that actually turns off the A/C if it does not detect motion within about 60 seconds. Apparently, the idea is to conserve electricity. Sounds like a good idea, right? Well, the effect of it is that when you are SLEEPING, the A/C shuts off completely, regardless of the thermostat temperature. We woke up about 10 times during the night to realize that the room temperature had gotten to about 80 degrees, totally stuffy, and the air was off. When we got up to check the thermostat the first time it happened, the air went back on because it detected we were moving. A little sign above the thermostat confirmed that this was the case.
OK, I think this is a good idea. But seriously, make the sensor more sensitive, or set the time to something like 30 minutes. People don't really move while they are sleeping!
The hotel gave us a little discount for our trouble, but the A/C issue was enough to make our night less than enjoyable.

Solvang is a small city in Santa Barbara County, California, with a population of less than 6,000 people, which was originally founded in 1911 by Danish settlers. The city's name, Solvang, means "Sunny Field" in Danish.
Thus, the city is visited by millions of people annually, attracted by its Danish provincial architecture and for a taste of little Denmark right here in Southern California.
However, my visit wasn't exactly touristic, but just incidental to a job I got to do at Chumash Casino, in the adjacent town of Santa Ynez.
Since the concentration of hotels in the area is in Solvang, thru our corporate website, I booked myself online at Royal Scandinavian, sight unseen and without much expectation other than a room at the inn.
Royal Scandinavian is an elegant country inn, with the luxuries of a regular full-service hotel. The room had a private balcony overlooking the inner garden courtyard with a heated pool and spa.
For dining or cocktails, they have Meadows Restaurant & Bar, which looked nice, but haven't tried it because with little time to spare, I went out to drive around and had dinner elsewhere.
The discounted corporate rate I got was $150 for a relaxing night and I've got no complaint.
