Good NYC style place in a neighborhood that needs it.
Weirdly enough, the further east you go, the harder it is to find a slice. Avenue B really had nothing, then that liquor store at 4th added a pizza oven, but there was always something not-right about what came out of it. Hooray for Solo for filling the gap with the kind of slice that's taken for granted every few blocks just a bit to the west. Since it's newish it's bigger and cleaner and more modern in its design than your average pizzeria. We need it and I'm glad it's there.
I've wanted to try Solo Pizza for some time now. I always see it whenever I'm in the area. I'm in the area quite a lot now with credit given to the girlfriend. Their clean glass windows and simple neon signs always catch my attention and stands apart from the rest of the block. In fact it's probably the most colorful facade on the entire street.
My girlfriend picked me up tonight from class so for dinner I wanted to go to Katz since I was craving some pastrami. To my disappointment, when we got there they were closed. So the next place on my crave list was Croxley's. But when we got there they told me I'd probably have to wait an hour. An hour!? By then my stomach would eat itself! Well we walked out and what did I see looking right at me? The bright, inviting windows of Solo Pizza of course!
My girlfriend and I quickly ran across the street and grabbed a menu. We ordered the Ground Sweet Italian Sausage and Beef Ragu Over Spaghetti and a Barbecue Chicken Slice. Also order a can of Pepsi and the total was $14.50. Wow. The gentlemen behind the counter asked if I wanted the slice first while I waited for the pasta. I couldn't say yes fast enough and my stomach growled in agreement.
The slice looked great but I felt that it lacked a bit in flavor. There was chicken, onions, BBQ sauce and two kinds of cheeses but somehow it was a bit bland. The crust was nicely made. It was a deep dish crust but it wasn't too doughy like most places have them. It was crispy and not too burned. Even my girlfriend ate the crust instead of making me eat it like usual. That's a star right there.
The pasta was the same story. It looked really good. As I was walking it to the table this lady eating with her boyfriend even looked up and I heard her whisper "mmmm..." Unfortunately the taste didn't quite live up to the appearance. It too was a bit on the bland side. The spaghetti was cooked a little bit past al dente which is just how I like my pasta. So that was a plus. There really wasn't anything all too amazing about the pasta. I guess I had too high of an expectation before it arrived.
I'm really unsure as to whether I should rate this place a 3 or a 4. I think my expectations were just too inflated with my want to try it so often. The food itself warranted either a 2 or a 3. That extra star is because the people working here were very very nice and the decor was very different from any normal pizza place. The place was clean and brightly lit. The tables and chairs looked like they've been polished. The problem is that nice people and inviting furniture doesn't make up for bad food. Let's just put 3 stars and call it a 3.5. I prefer to round down rather than rounding up to a star it hasn't earned. It also cost more than I would liked to pay.
I would put Solo Pizza in the "Well Above Average Pizza Place" category, which I just created, right now.
They have a lot more on the menu than just pizza, but the pizza I thoroughly enjoy. The by the slice option is great for deliver, but I find when you order an entire pie, the quality is just a whole new lever of yum. I personally enjoy it so much because they don't add all those random spices that serve no purpose and completely overpower anything about the pizza. It's good crust, good sauce, good cheese and a good ratio of all of the above. good good good good.
The pasta is also a personal favorite of mine. It shows up piping hot (I also practically live next door) and at first I was concerned that the sauce was too runny. But as it starts to cool to an edible temperature, the sauce thickens and is perfect. I've only had the 2 alfredo's but will soon be branching out, as soon as my boyfriend with the tomato allergy isn't around.
I am writing this because I feel like I should write about my "go to" delivery pizza. It's pretty standard, but done well.
Since that didn't take too long, I'd just like to say on behalf of myself and my pregnant wife: if you're sitting on the train, eyeing a standing woman up and down, trying to decide if she's pregnant or just fat, do me a favor and JUST OFFER HER YOUR SEAT!!! You make life so much easier for poor schmucks like me when you do.
Summing up: Solo is good, offer your seat.
I posted earlier about how bad my first experience was with these guys, but everyone should know that a week later I received a hand mailed letter from them apologizing about the long wait with a gift certificate!!! Never in my 10 years in NY have I ever had that response from a pizza place.
Well done Solo Pizza! Class act. I will certainly give you guys another shot. Thanks.

The first time I ordered pizza from these guys the delivery took over an hour. When I called to… Read more »
This pizza is awesome. The pizza has a crispy, thin crust, but there is the option of getting the thick crust pizza that is usually a veggie or meat special. There are so many types of pizzas with various toppings. You don't feel gross after eating the pizza here, they don't have a ton of grease covering it. It is DELICIOUS!!
I like Solo because:
1. They always have the Met game on (during the season).
2. They don't care if I come in, holding my dry-cleaning, just to watch the game while I wait for my takeout from another restaurant.
3. The lasagna slice. It is now impossible for me to get drunk, and not want a lasagna slice. It's Pavlovian.
Seriously, if you're out late on Ave B, do yourself a favor and come eat this slice of pizza. It's basically a Sicilian slice with ground beef and ricotta, but it's DAMN good.
Good "standard" pizza. It's the pizza you want when you want tasty pizza, not a unique dining experience. Perfect for lunch to drop by and grab a slice without any frills or wait time.
Good price too, though I don't like that they don't have a slice and drink special.
i got the solo thin crust and a soda delivered for lunch.
i think i was expecting too much. the pizza was okay - not great.
a little too crusty for my liking and the sauce seemed bland.
i have not been inspired to try again with so many other solid pizza choices in the area.
I've had pizza at Solo several times because it's across the street from my apartment, thus making it SO convenient for those late night pizza cravings. And that's about the ONLY time I eat at solo.
It earns major points for a friendly staff and an always clean interior. But the pizza is a little "meh." It's just average. The crust is a real problem, lacking any sort of texture or flavor.
I would only recommend Solo if you're walking by it and have a unstoppable craving for pizza. Other than that, head up to 11B (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) and get pizza from them.
Their delivery was incredibly fast. This was late on a Sunday night when most of the other options in the neighborhood were closed. They were even willing to deliver a block outside their normal delivery area. The guy who delivered the pie was incredibly polite, and obviously proud of how quickly he got the pie to my door. He got a good tip. I'm giving them an extra star for their delivery service, because they sure have that down.
Unfortunately the margherita pizza they delivered was uneven. The crust was a good example of slice joint thin crust, which was fine; I don't expect a brick oven style crust from a place that doesn't have one. They weren't too stingy with the basil or olive oil on top. The fresh cheese was OK, and plentiful enough. What went wrong? The sauce. It was insipid, without a hint of garlic or freshness. Very much like tomato paste. It tasted like someone boiled down a giant can of foodservice pizza sauce. This was unfortunate, because it undermined what should have been a good pie.
Hey Solo! Fix the sauce and you'll be onto something! You're doing everything else right. You almost picked up a satisfied customer last night. Pizza shouldn't improve by sitting out all night then being reheated in my oven at home. Yours did. That's just strange. I'm blaming your sauce.
Two stars for your pizza, plus one for stunningly fast delivery at an odd time to a place outside your normal area.
This place is REALLY good.
Try the slice with ricotta and ground beef/sausage on it.
People who don't like this pizza are probably not used to what actual Italian food should taste like.
Very good.
It's late night on Ave B. It's raining. You see this brightly lit pizzeria. You think to yourself "I'm drunk, yes pizza!" Try to get a hold of yourself. Keep it together and keep walking.
Solo's open late that's why I don't give them a 1 star. I appreciate late night options. But man, this pizza was not good. It honestly tasted like spaghetti-o's sauce was on it. My friend thought the same thing. Like bad ragu! We were both drunk so that will tell you one of two things:
1. We were impaired, so by all means we couldn't formulate a rational opinion on their food.
2. Or the other option, which is the one I tend to favor. Solo's pizza is nasty, so nasty that you can't even pass it off on two wasted guys.
Sunday evening and just ordered a basil / tomato pie from here - half with cheese, half without. Absolutely delicious. Focaccia is incredibly fluffy and sauce is finger licking good. Service is also super quick. Dont order a full pie for three people - the focaccia is filling!
We live in the LES and have been searching everywhere for good NY pizza in the neighborhood that might please our spoiled tastes (Johns, Joe's, Bleeker...are all too far across town from us, sadly).
Solo had a delicious margherita. Amazing crust. We had ours fresh from the oven and it was frickin yummy. For ppl, who are picky about pizza, I recommend Solo.
Plain, plain, plain. Cheese, cheese, cheese. Just do it. I'm a vegetarian, so don't mess with the meat-lovers slices. The plain is a superb slice. The photo I posted didn't do it justice.
Solo is the best pizza place in the area. The focaccia slices are the fluffiest ever and the sauce is delicious. I haven't had a slice I didn't like from this place...
This is the best pizza in the vicinity. Avoid that pizza on 4th and B and the two Ray's on Houston nearby. And I'm not a Two Boots girl, unlike many others. I'm telling you, this is the one. Solo is not a full on restaurant, just a regular pizza joint with consistently delicious pizza. Really nice guys work there, too. And they're open super late. Love it.
Pleasantly surprised. I was on my way home from my run and needed to get my carb fix. I'm usually a thin crust pizza slice kinda girl, but decided to get the focaccia with black olives. Very tasty. Roasted tomato sauce, fresh mozarella, olives and basil. Really hit the spot. Will be back to try the other stuff!
i love this place and am fortunate to be a block from it. lately i took some friends from out of town here and forever elevated their expectations for tasty slice experiences, woops.
lately i get the tomato/basil focaccia to go. the sauce is delicious, the crust is gooey but crispy (how the f do you even do that?), it's just fantastic. one time i had the garlic/broccoli pasta and that was decent, but i don't really eat pasta often.
the guys that run this place are friendly and fast, it's cleaner/brighter than your typical pizza joint, and it's always open except at 9am or whatever, although i'd be tempted to have a slice for breakfast too. if you're feeling sodaish they have some of those real brewed or cane sugar whatever sodas which finish off a slice well.
definitely try it out.
Pretty good pizza but hopefully not the best that the city has to offer. It was thin, crisp and melty but it didn't have that special zing that makes a memorable slice of pizza. Even now I'm having trouble thinking of how it tasted. I know it wasn't bad but it wasn't great either
Solo Pizza is great if you're in the mood for *that* kind of pizza - cheesy, greasy, and oh-so-not-healthy. Which would warrant four stars, except that this is only the case when you order a whole pie. Individual slices, on the other hand, are sub-par and extremely disappointing when you've had a couple drinks and are in dire need of a slice that fits my original description. At least the place is clean and they have a big flat screen TV.
Also, the magnet slices they give you when you order a whole pie (collect eight to get a free pizza) are cool.
