Review Highlights
So this is a good wine store. Fine. But what makes it five-stars worthy is that it's reasonably priced and we had this lovely exchange with the guy who owns it:
Wine guy (in Irish accent): What kind of wine to you like?
Me: Anything dry?
Boyfriend: That's not even true, you liked that Reisling the other day.
Me: Okay, it depends on my mood. But I hate oak.
Boyfriend: It totally depends on the day and the food and her mood.
Wine guy: Right. One time somebody asked me that, and this is no reference to you or anything, but he asked me that, he said "what's your favorite wine you've ever had?" and I said "I can't remember her name." You know?
Me and Boyfriend: Exactly!
Adorable and friendly little wine shop in Roslindale Village. The staff obviously know and care a lot about their wines, as seen through the little handwritten placards all over the shop. There's tons of affordable bottles in the $8 to $20 range as well as higher end stuff. A bonus is that they carry my husband's favorite beer, Hoegaarden.
Great service and great selection of wines in every price range. They also have a small but awesome selection of beers. Came in here with my bf last night, and they didn't have the exact beer he wanted (Three Philosophers), but they looked it up and found him two beers they did have that were extremely similar AND told him they would have his preferred beer next time we were there. Very sweet and helpful staff.
A Shrine to Wine is the perfect way to describe this place. Packed to the gills with wine of all types and locales, this place is great for perusing and getting recommendations. Check out the tastings Saturday 5-7pm.
So after a tasty meal at Sophia's Grotto, we strolled on past Solera. Paul jokingly goes, "Hey look they have lambic." Since me and Jessika have become addicted to Lambic like Amy Winehouse is addicted to crack, we ran inside.
And you know what...?
THEY HAD IT! WHAT?! We cleaned house on that. Jess got the raspberry and apple, I got the peach and black current. What made it hilarious is that Paul was genuinely kidding.
I was also eyeing some concord grape wine, when the owner caught my eye and said, "No you will not like that. It's not good." I immediately liked him. We all started talking about wine and Ireland? I don't know, I was too busy starting at all the wine. The owners were really nice. I love love that this place just looks like you are walking into a real wine cellar.
If I lived in Roslindale, I would definitely come here for my wining needs.
Oh man. A little Lamic will make me do almost anything. We walked past here after dinner in Roslindale and went in to search for my precious Lambic. And they had it!! Our group bought 4 bottles.
Now, aside from that this little wine shop rocks. it is organized, very cute decor wise, and has a great selection. The staff (owners?) are awesome. They chatted with us and showed us some rare beer they have that is only delivered to them twice a year. They owner is from Ireland and since I had been there before we chatted a little about Ireland.
I wish I lived closer! The BF's parents live in Roslindale, so I am pretty sure I will be back here. At least for that Lambic!! This is a great, and wonderful little shop.
I am trying hard to understand why people like this place. For me, the service is seriously overbearing. The management seems to find it impossible to let you look around without pouncing on you and offering advice even when you've said you prefer to look at what they have first.
I once bought a bottle of champagne here--they didn't have the bottle I requested on ice, so they then produced a much more expensive bottle that was chilled. Fine, these things happen, but the classy thing to do is to offer me the more expensive bottle at the price of the one I originally requested.
A great compliment to the Boston Cheese Cellar (next door).
In addition to the diverse wine selection (and frequent tasting opportunities and recommendations), the fridge in the back has a diverse selection of beers, including many Belgian varieties.
Wonderful selection of wines from $7 to $107. The owners are fun and knowledgable. They will only steer you toward what you are looking for in a wine.. no wasteful upselling like most wine shops around Boston.
If I remember correctly, during the First weekend of every month, you can pick and choose any 12 wines under $20 (totalling a case) and get %10 off.
Great spot!!
Yes, this place is fantastic. The very best thing is the level of care, knowledge and enthusiasm that the staff have for the particular wines they carry. The impeccable taste of their collection and personal unfussy service make this store a real joy.
They have a respectable selection of organic wines, they keep at least one bottle of every white wine in the store chilled, they have a small but very nice beer selection and great regional variety in their inventory. With a great cheese shop (Boston Cheese Cellar) and bread bakery (Fornax) just feet away, Solera is at the heart of a seriously tasty trifecta.
As far as selection and know-how, this place cannot be beat. However, I have to agree with the unfavorable review of the customer service. I have found one person who works there to be very condescending. I went in with a gift certificate one day and selected two bottles of wine. The price did not add up to the amount on the gift certificate, and she gave me a little trouble about writing me another gift certificate for the remainder. Fine. I selected another bottle and handed over my credit card to pay for the extra. She said, "A credit card for under $10. Now you are REALLY killing me." It was pretty obnoxious, I have to say. I thought I was patronizing her business, not killing her.
What a fantastic wine store. Everyone is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. I just tell them what I'm cooking, or what the occasion is and I get several EXCELLENT recommendations. Plus, they have a small selection of great beer.
Love it, love it, love it. Great selection crammed into a small and inviting space. And very knowledgeable and friendly staff. We have been known to dig waaaaay back in the cooler for that one remaining 6 pack of Hoegaarden or whatever we're in the mood for. Nice selection of reasonably priced and tasty wine too. Love the tastings too.
Excellent wine selection -- most wines are in the $10 - $20 range, perfect for a weekday meal or to bring as a host gift for a dinner party. I am not a wine afficiando and never know which type of wine to pick. Several times, I've gone in, telling them what I'm having for dinner and they recommend a great accompaniment. Great find!
