11 reviews for Sol Y Lago
After hearing that the former chef and owner of Alma partnered with another former San Francisco Restaurateur, we decided this was going to be the place that our group of eleven would dine after a day at the slopes of Northstar.
I found it interesting that people were expecting typical Spanish cuisine from reading the other reviews. I was expecting something different, as it's billed as Sierra Latino Cuisine.
I thought many of the dishes were creative and flavorful. Unfortunately, most people don't seem to find this place in the winter since most people stay on resort grounds. This is, in my humble Tahoe area opinion, a hidden treasure lost in a strip mall.
I can't speak very much to the views, we dined at night, but I have no doubt that they are spectacular during the daylight hours.
We had the ahi tuna appetizer which had a wonderful hearty, smokey herb flavor which was paired with a balancing jicama ginger.
It was followed by a delightful and new experience of eating a live butter lettuce with a tangy, creamy vinaigrette and sprinkled with cranberries.
The crab gratin was delish - cheesy and yummy!
We then shared the enormous grill platter, with a chunk of well seasoned beef on the medium rare side, chicken sausage and a pork tenderloin all moist and bursting with flavor.
The biggest disappointment was the Sangria - it was flavorless and bland and not potent at all.
The desserts were simple - the great Spanish rice pudding and the Dulce de leche and Spanish chocolate gelato were on point!
The lunch menu is limited and the staff is to quick to turn a table. We didn't finish our first course befor the second course was served and the first course was removed. After our server returned 10 minutes later I informed the server that our first course was removed before we could finish and the reaction was "Sorry".
The food was good and the view is great. I recommend sitting on the deck and ordering drinks just one course.
August "Sunset" magazine issue , had an article on Lake Tahoe titled "Time for Tahoe"......In that article the Magazine recommends:
the most talked-about restaurant Tahoe City has seen in years... talked about because is that good or that bad ? In my humble opinion - the latter.
The co-owner of this restaurant is a former SF chef Johnny Alamilla (?)- hm ................
This restaurant wants to be Spanish....There are tapas on
the menu - we had sweet English pea & queso fresco ampanaditas ( sweet peas were sweet and fresh but combintion was blant ) , the wild
striped bass ceviche, the Yucca fries etc.etc.
The menu LOOKS interesting but limited. The only good thing about this restaurant is the view, hibiscus tea and a nice Polish student - waiter.......................
I tried to eat there this week. The restaurant is closed, out of business. Too bad. Welcome to Recessionstan.
Went here with a large group of friends after a day out on the slopes. This place reminds me a lot of Hacienda de la Sierra out in Incline Village. Perhaps they're related? Unfortunately on the North Shore the sitdown Mexican style places are generally only ok but if you can get tanked on Margaritas what does it matter? The one bonus over Hacienda? There's no "smoking section" here since it's not in Nevada. The thing I like from both is the Tortilla soup, which is decently tasty. 3.5 stars.
Got quadruple hammer twisted on Cinco de Mayo over here. They rolled out a special holiday drink menu and we (me. plural) over indulged. The food is aight.
Really a 3 star restaurant, but it gets an extra star for being on the lake. Last night I had some decent carne asada tacos - my husband had the carnitas tacos which he thought were pretty good, but I liked mine better. I've been to Sol y Lago a couple of times, and it has never been super busy.
Came here expecting to find Hacienda, but unfortunately it was gone, and replaced by the ultra yuppie Sol. Despite that stayed for dinner and we were amazed with the Spanish cuisine and tapas. Starters included brussel sprouts with bacon, and a queso fundido. My entree was a a mouth watering cornmeal crusted red trout. Dessert was a comped creme brulee. A bit expensive though even for Tahoe. Great wine list and after dinner drinks like an unusual white port, and amontillado. Like the rest of the restaurants in the area has the ubiquitous dj for the after dinner crowd, but have yet to experience that scene yet.
This place has absolutely authentic carne asada tacos. Just like the ones I used to get in law school at the taco truck in Los Angeles. Small, on two corn tortillas, served with lime and that crumbly mexican cheese and a dollop of guacamole. I've had them twice and loved them both times. The fried asparagus was good but not over the top, the mahi mahi tacos were not as great as the carne asada ones. The caesar was odd - whole leaves of romaine, and like two croutons. It was okay, but really, I don't want to cut up my own lettuce at a restaurant. Both times the service was fine. I had an odd top shelf and expensive margarita but it was not sweet at all, which is a little out of character for a margarita, almost like they forgot the lime juice. It was supposed to have cointreau which is sweet, also, so maybe that was not in it? Not sure what happened with that. I will go back for those tacos, though. The view is great as well as it is right on the lake.
I had my rehearsal dinner here for my wedding, and it was fantastic! brian the manager was really helpful, they were able to help with whatever requests I had, except that they wanted to pour (and charge for) each drink individually - ie, no pitchers of margaritas, no bottles of wine.. overall tho, they were great to work with, and the food was good! delicious tres leches cake for dessert!
The restaurant has a great view of the lake and great outside dining and an interesting and eclectic menu but, I would say they're one of those hit and miss restaurants. Some items we ordered were good, some were just okay. Overall not bad but, not great either.
