Yep, it's just as good as everyone is saying it is. Had the veg combo plate with sweet plantains and black beans - simple, flavorful, not greasy like most Latin food around Marin. The place is super cute and the exterior is a loud, bright green - and the owners posted a couple complaint letters they received from snooty Marinites about the color scheme not complementing the rest of the area. LOL.
Anyway - the food is really good, filling, but healthy tasting. Another huge plus for me is that most of it can be made wheat-free, which is awesome because I have to eat gluten-free and most items on the menu are to begin with... also very vegan/veg friendly. Now, if only they had some booze...
Delicious!
After taking a bite of the chicken, my boyfriend declared that it was some of the best chicken he had ever tasted.
We ordered the vegetarian stew plate and a steak sandwich.
The sandwich was perfectly proportioned ... steak, onions, avocado with a special sauce that was the color of Thousand Island dressing. The bread was perfectly toasted and held up well with the fixings.
The vegetarian stew had tons of veggies. We mixed in the side of black beans and added some of the delicious chili sauce (very good but not hot enough for me). The plantains were uber-yum-- we tried both the garlic and regular sweet. Didn't think I'd like the garlic one, but it was awesome ... crunchy. The salad was spinach and baby greens with a perfect light vinegary dressing.
A bit loud but it's like a cafe ... that serves restaurant quality food. Simple ingredients with incredible taste.
My wife and I spent a warm, damp, and delicious week in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. The cobblestone streets, chirping coqui, and maduros captured our hearts. Until we discovered Sol Food, we had no way to savor those memorable fried plantains, that wonderful marinated chicken, or slowly simmered beans without a plane trip.
A quick drive over the bridge into downtown San Rafael feels like a quick trip to savor some of the island's best fresh cuisine at a reasonable price. Sol Food puts Marin's unique twist on Puerto Rican food through sourcing organic foods and free range chicken. The plantains, whether savory or sweet, have a nice texture and excellent flavor. Having cooked plantains a hundred times myself, I know that getting plantains just right every time is more difficult than it sounds.
Unlike other foods from the Caribbean, la comida puerto ricana doesn't come in two flavors: spicy and spicier. The dishes won't push you to suck down the Limonada Fresca (a limeade reminsicient of a thirst quenching mojito) to cool off your tongue. If you do want a little more heat, douse your dish in a little of the vinegary sauce in bottles on tables around the room.
Sol Food arranges the dining space as one large communal room. During my first visit, I had a headache and felt a little awkward. Luckily, we found a table with our group of four that we didn't have to share. The communal experience offers a more festive atmosphere and camaraderie with fellow diners, but it may take some off guard. I wouldn't recommend Sol Food for a nice quiet romantic dinner but I would recommend it for quick lunch or festive dinner.
What is it with me? Am I glutton for punishment? Seriously, I stay on my side of the bay for the most part, just venturing out for special occasions. A trip to the city is taken about as seriously as a vacation.
So the Bay Bridge is closed, traffic that is always snarled is now an nightmare beyond compare, and I feel the need to go back across (I had dinner on Wednesday at the Buckeye Roadhouse http://www.yelp.com/bi...) on Thursday at the Sol Food Restaurant.
I have to admit, this isn't my first visit. I actually was drooling the first time I saw them on TV, way before that hottie Guy Fieri showed them off on triple D (Diners, Drive-in's and Dives). It's kinda funny, they have 2 letters in the window box by the front door where the menu is usually posted in most restaurants. One is an email about their "less than traditional" food, based on the writers understanding of their menu. This was a laugh. Their food (which I've now experienced on 3 occasions) is not only authentic but pretty darn traditional. OK, you've got me, I'm not Puerto Rican, no, I'm a Hapa who has been to Puerto Rico and enjoyed eating at the homes of several Puerto Rican families, both abroad and stateside.
The second letter was from a gentleman who took the time to handwrite a note letting the owners know that while he loved their food, he couldn't palate eating at a lime green establishment. He suggested that they take a lesson from the restaurant on the block which he felt was "tastefully" decorated. Let's not mention that they were empty sans the staff.
OK, so we have a screaming lime green building with the name painted on the top. It sits on the corner of 3rd and Lincoln. It's so easy to get to off the freeway, I could find it (now that's saying something). There is ample public parking on 3rd, behind the building at the public parking lot.
As I've said, I've been 3 times and enjoyed 3 different meals:
Visit 1 - Fried talapia with rice and beans - Five Star Meal! The whole talapia was marinated and fried and had a light crispy coating that matched perfectly with the sweet juicy tenderness of the meat. The rice was prepared perfectly and was served with pink beans. I had 1 tostone (green plantain fried, smashed and fried again) and 1 maduros (sweet fried yellow plantain) all meals include a large serving of mixed greens lightly tossed in their house vinaigrette and a wedge of avocado.
Visit 2 - Camarones Criollos - Large succulent prawns that are sauteed with fresh garlic and onions in a rich tomato sauce. They are served over rice with your choice of plantains and the salad.
Visit 3 - Chuletas Fritas - Fried Pork Chops served with rice, pink or black beans, salad, plantains and pickled pink onions. And for desert we ordered one of each!
The Flan de Queso is your basic flan. Really nothing fantastic - average
The Tembleque Con Canela was extraordinary! Creamy coconut pudding with your choice of cinnamon or Mango sauce. We chose Mango Sauce and hands down, this was our favorite!
NOTES -
1/ Do not come here planning on a romantic quiet dinner. This is open seating. You come in, order your meal, get a placard with your number and look around for a table to share (get it?)
2/ Don't plan to linger over coffee. When you are done eating, your plate will disappear faster than your kids on chore day and you will be scooted on your way
3/Don't mix this up with the other location on 4th and Lincoln, they only have 1 table and do mostly take-out
4/Do come here if you enjoy super fresh food, using local organic ingredients, with simple flavors that make you feel like you are at home.
Oh... the ride from Vallejo? It was just great. I missed all the traffic! LOL
Delicious. We had the pork chop and bistek, the flavors popped and the meats were cooked perfectly. Loved the chili infused vinegar and the pickled onions.
The lemonade and Arnoldo palmero drinks were also tasty and very refreshing.
Ambiance is lively and entertaining. Definitely recommended for puerto rican cuisine.
It's like transporting yourself to Puerto Rico.
The food is really really really really really really really GOOD!
Step 1:
Order at the counter or the server will approach you.
Step 2:
Order the combination; chicken, half sweet and half salty plantains, black/pinto beans, rice, and salad.
Step 3:
Order the limeade
Step 4:
Grab a seat and place your number on the table and have the food come to you. Once you get it be sure to use their house made hot sauce which isn't too spicy.
Step 5:
Feel satisfied and stuffed.
Step 6:
Go back to Step 1 and repeat, but of course on a different day.
Solid place with a great Caribbean feel. A favorite restaurant on the recommendation list.
I LOVE SOL FOOD! But... has anyone noticed that the portions have gotten smaller and the prices increased A LOT? Don't get me wrong, it's still a cheap and delicious place that I can't resist. I also think it's a smart business decision, especially since Sol Food was featured on Diners Dives & Drive Ins on the Food Network. I'm not sure I'd like quality sacrified, though.
I love that they deliver, yet my order is ALWAYS wrong when delivered. I've also had a few worms in my salads. Pre washed doesn't mean you don't have to wash the lettuce, peeps. A quick rinse will get rid of any worms. kthanks.
I still love both locations and I will continue to eat there. I recommend it to everyone!
Wowsers! what a week! The flu, breaking a boys heart and getting my heart broken as well. Yes, this all happened in 7 days. I also decided to go on a diet influenced by my fabulous trainer (casey at bodyworks sf). So after throwing up then crying I thought it was a good idea to starve myself off of carbs.... you know... for fun! ;)
So needing a major LIFE boost I headed to my home turf of Marin. I called every Gal Pal I have within the county lines and made it clear we were going to gab about all the top gossip (did fergies husband really cheat on her?). We all decided to meet here at Sol Food. The best decision of the week!
Sol food is great! Not only do they deliver, they have an amazing menu. A south beach diet friendly menu too i might add ;) I got the steak with black beans and a side salad. It was AMAZINGNESS!!! Each piece of the steak was so tender. The onions on top gave it that little bit of extra TING that i like. The flavors were full and robust. Its not a lot of places i can eat on this diet and fill completely satisfies. Sol Food did the trick. Everything was on point!
So needless to say after ordering at the counter my ladies and I sat down and chowed down! Enjoying our great meals as we gabbed about life.

I spent this early afternoon in marin. I met some friends i hadn't seen in a while and also took… Read more »
Being half-Colombian and having eaten home-cooked Colombian food since the day I could eat solid food, if there's one thing I know, it's Latin American food--and Sol has got her recipes down. Not only is the attention-to-detail on the "homey Puerto Rican" aesthetics right on mark (the old school Coca-Cola bins; the upturned crates; even the bright lime green color that you would be crazy to miss from blocks away), but the attention to what matters most is perfecto: the flavors.
Unlike many other Bay Area "fusion" restaurants, Sol's food is flavorful, consistent and simple--what you would find in any lucky Latin American casa that has an outstanding cook. For anyone that's never tried Latin American food, I would strongly recommend the plátanos--both the ripe, sweet ones and the hard, salty ones. I only hope that the per-plate prices are kept consistent as they are nearing the high level already.
On a side note: their revamped website with it's colorful photography and "soulful" music is muy bueno; gives you an idea of what you'll be experiencing.
Seriously, am I missing something? I had the Cuban, which basically tasted like a mayo sandwich with old pork. By the way, $10 for a sando ONLY seems a little steep. Friend had the chicken dish came with beans and plantains. The beans were alright, and the plantains were good, but not good enough for me to go back.
If you are looking for the most delicious food in san rafael, you must go to sol food. We used to get the chicken combination with pink beans and rice ( our son loves the beans and rice). It comes with a green salad with the most heavenly garlicky dressing. Then we tried the shrimp, so good, and the steak, oh my god! Everything is amazing. Once we tried the steak sandwich, with caramelized onions, avocado, garlic aioli and melted cheese, dipped in their amazing spicy sauce, that's what we get every time now.
We usually get it to go, but it is fun to stay and eat it there too. great people watching.
One word: AMAZING. While going to college in Marin County, trying to find a late night eatery was near impossible, however the light at the end of my tunnel from all-night studying was Sol Food. Luckily for you, if you are not a fan of a small hip shack on the corner, you can always eat at the sit-down full service Sol Food restaurant down the street (literally). You can's miss it because the building is lime green! But back to the hip shack...
On Fridays and Saturdays this place is buzzing with college folk, young families, and those interested on a modern twist on Puerto Rican favorites such as fried plantains. Late night service is key, but more so on Fridays and Saturdays when they are open until 2am! (and of course college students, they deliver)
If it is your first time to Sol Food I suggest you definitely try either a platter or a sandwich. Either way rice and beans are definitely a plus. Also, if you are feeling adventurous then try their plantains (bananas) either garlic friend or sweet yellow. Yummy!
My favorite part? You can purchase their delicious spicy sauce in a "message in a bottle" type of bottle AND they take debit and credit card. YES!
My friends and I were originally planning to have soul food for my friend's birthday lunch, but changed our minds and decided to go for "sol" food. I'm so glad we changed our minds!
The lime green building at the corner of Lincoln and 5th was impossible to miss and perfectly reflected the lively atmosphere inside. We lined up to order and then received a number that we took to the first available table. We went on a Sunday at 12:30pm and the restaurant was packed, but we were still able to find seats at the end of a long communal table. There appeared to be some regular tables and also some seating along the window, but we had plenty of room at the family-style table and didn't feel crowded at all.
The menu had quite a few items on it and everything looked delicious. We went at a busy time and were a little overwhelmed, but the hostess was friendly and helpful and explained some of the more popular dishes. We finally decided that we'd each try a different combination plate. All the combinations came with beans and rice, plantains (sweet or garlic), and a generous side salad. I enjoyed all of the sides, including my sweet plantains. We thought the fried garlic plantains had a nice mixture of chewy mixed with crunchy, but not as much flavor as we would have expected. No matter...I was digging those sweet ones!
For my main dish I had the Pollo Al Horno, which was two pieces of perfectly marinated and baked boneless chicken thigh. (They also had the option of one or three pieces.) The chicken was so full of flavor and moist! I also sampled my friends' dishes, the Bistec Encebollado (thinly-sliced beef with onions) and Camarones (large prawns in a tomato sauce) and would have been happy as a clam if I'd ordered either of those dishes. The prawns were especially tasty...the sauce was just killer!
The prices were totally righteous. We added a soft drink, a mango iced tea, and an iced coffee (served in Mason jars) to our order and the total bill was just under $42. I was amazed considering how good the food was and how large the portions were!
I'm so glad to have another great dining find in Marin and plan to go back and try breakfast or one of those sandwiches! We saw a sandwich delivered to one of the ladies in the party next to me and all three of us stopped eating just to look at it oozing with yummy goodness.
Oh my...just writing this is making me want to go back. I think posting the picture I took is going to make me even hungrier!
This place is amazing!!
Fresh, local ingredients.
Great recipes.
Out of this world sauce.
I could eat here everyday.
+/- signs represent intensity of positive/negative sentiment
++ menu offers choices both familiar & novel, with quite a few curveball combos you probably haven't tried out before. plates are a solid value, hovering in the $9-$14 range.
+++ engaging, comfortable interior walks a fine line between cute & kitsch--sepia-tone photographs, all kinds of plants & low benches.
++ servers patrol the line, grabbing your order while you wait--food arrives in a few minutes. questions were answered in straightforward, capable fashion.
+ tasty juice options are one of the few $3 drinking options i'm ever likely to endorse.
+ immaculate, citrus-smelling restroom.
---- precisely the opposite of healthy: everything is fried, refried & dripping w/ oil--not the semi-healthy kinds, but the transfattiest of all transfats in all the land.
- place gets super-busy, especially on weekends. although food arrives in a typically prompt fashion, if you're looking to sit down & eat, you might be disappointed.
- downtown san rafael location means hardly any parking.
summary: it's a surprisingly appealing spot w/ tasty but dreadfully unhealthy food. engaging enough for a more formal outing but also low-key enough for a late-night destination, it's well-worth a drive as long as you don't mind a short stint in a line & potentially having to eat on the go.
I love this place. One of my favorite eateries ANYWHERE.
Fresh, simple, delicious food, well-prepared, tasty. Plenty of vegetarian options, which is unusual for a Caribbean eatery (where I come from). Interesting and refreshing selection of beverages. Great creative décor that doesn't overdo it so you can really appreciate the details. Incredibly fast service. Friendly, cheerful staff AND patrons. And TWO locations within two blocks (the other is smaller but has live music).
My faves: the tostones, arroz con gandules, the veggie sandwich, the fresh squeezed quart of limeade in a jar, the homemade hot sauce!!
Well worth a trip across the bridge (or the continent) for some Sol Food!!!
p.s. the posted letters by the entrance are hilarious.
You have to try Sol Food. The food is fresh and Tasty. Large portions and small prices are also the norm at Sol food. We make this a must stop every time we head back from the city. The pork chops are tender and delicious and come with a side salad, rice and beans and plantanes ( try the garlic plantanes). It is well worth the trip!!
Yes, yes, please know...Sol Food is not to be missed.
The atmosphere is energetic, fun, and welcoming with mostly communal seating of heavy, wooden tables and bright colored walls of turquoise and lime.
I went while visiting my sister and brother-in-law and my husband and I were immediately rapt with the eatery, asking if there was a reason for us to head back to San Rafael for another go. We stooped to begging; it was really that good.
Both of us being vegetarian, we started with the vegetariano combinaciones with black beans and the plain, sweet plantains. Servings are hearty, so you can either eat until you would like to call for a cot or split the meal with someone, as we did. The homemade hot salsa, pique, is divine! It makes the plantains, the beans, and the rice all absolutely perfect. Finished off with a face-sized canning jar filled with their fresh te helado (mango iced tea), great company and conversation, the evening could not have been better.
I cannot wait for the next chance to eat at Sol Food and I hope you find yourself there soon enjoying it too.
::SATURDAY::
Sure, any place can have the ON days and OFF days... I've only been here once, it was lunch Saturday, and it was boom'n!
::FOOD::
Sweet mother of G-Zus! This food is f#cking fantastic!! Been a long time since I got my Puerto-on, and I'm glad I did it here. Had the steak sandwich on the funky bread and the wife had the fried shrimp. Dame it was good. And that sauce on the tables? I'd eat my own baby if some of this sauce fell on it (I don't have kids, didn't eat them, I'm just say'n). :)
::STAFF::
Fantastic. Chef's were just back there going for it like it was the last day they could cook on Earth, and they aimed to go out swingin. I love to see that, and so rarely do! Wait staff was friendly and helpful (though the main whip-cracker at the register was a bit rough... but not a put off really... seemed necessary... like the Mom with the kids).
::DRINKS::
Fresh squeezed and awesome combos... or you could get some coconut soda. Okay! I'm a sucker for fresh squeeze... :)
::ATMO::
Love the obnoxious green! Love the doors on the walls! Love the colors, the open space, and that they put the "I hate your green building" letter behind glass at the doorway when you enter... awesome! That's the Johnny Cash Middle Finger! LOVE IT!
My kingdom for a SOL FOOD in SF!!!!!!!!
love it best Indian place in the bay
I SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT THE VINEGAR AND SALAD DRESSING
I'm giving it 3 stars since I had grilled chicken and salad, which is hard to screw up. The flavor of the chicken is good ( it had a balanced flavor and a hint of fennel ) and it was moist. I bought a bistec sandwich to-go and ate it much later, it was still good. I'm basing my review on the chicken and salad.
If you're going to eat ANYWHERE in Marin County, this is the place to go. Actually if you're going to Napa or Sonoma, and are going up through Marin - eat here.
This place is awesome. My wife and I usually make an effort to sample a variety of local establishments on our trips. This place is so good that we decided to go back twice.
Highly suggested are the pork chops, and shrimp. They are awesome. Personally I like the sweet over savory plantains. Don't forget to use their home made hot sauce.
Note that there are two locations in the San Rafael, one caters to the take out crowd, and the other has more family style seating. Choose appropriately - food is the same quality at both locations.
Its beans and rice people! for $10! I don't get it. and I've given it about 6 chances....
the one star is for the limeade
I'll let all you gringos in on a secret...GO ON SUNDAY AND GET THE SUNDAY DISH...if you don't, I feel sorry for ya!
The plate is served only on Sunday, and it comes with the tradional meal that is served in Puerto Rico....arroz con gandules (rice with gandules beans), pernil (pulled garlic pork), and pastellas (PR tamale)...I really enjoyed their tostones (they called them "garlic fries"), and I don't even really care for tostones, but thats how good they were.
Anthony had the 3 chicken piece plate, and it was screamin....Marcus had the sandwich, and no complaints their either...Abby had the shrimp, she loved it. And the madurus were so good, we ordered 2 more extra plates!
I would go back here anytime...but whenever I get the chance, I'll go on Sundays...I'll be a regular there after football season ends! LOL
Came here for my hubby's bday to try something new. He's NY Puerto Rican and you don't find much Puerto Rican food on the west coast. My first impression of the place...small but super cute...very homey cozy feeling. I loved the letter and email post at the front of the building regarding the color of the bldg...freakin hilarious! (you gotta read the whole thing if you go). Anyway, we came specifically on a Sunday for the special of the day because it was everything my husband wanted to try: arros con gandules, pernil, and pasteles. Although it didn't taste exactly like mom's cooking, he still enjoyed it and ate the whole plate. I tried it too of course, and I thought it was very tasty. I order the pork chops which I really liked too. My beans and rice were good...and the maduros plantains...I'm never disappointed with. The tostones was just alright..I think I'm just used to bananas being sweet.
We were definitely not disapointed with anything. We will definitely come again to try other stuff on the menu.
Oh the one thing that I would probably say that kinda bothered me....is the family style seating. It's kinda awkward to sit with strangers and trying to enjoy your meal with them listening to your conversation. Lucky for us, we got bar seats facing the outside window.
Best food in San Rafael.
Super tasty. Being adverse to chicken and beef, I always go with the vegetarian options and am never disappointed.
The Veggie Sandwich is the greatest! I always get it with a side of rice and beans with one of each plantain. The garlic ones tend to be on the dry side, but that's what the orange sauce is for!
I could probably eat here every day of the week. We order delivery a while back and got some of those giant sauce bottles free, which after a few days I proceeded to swipe from work and now have sitting in my fridge. I went through a period of trying it on everything salty I ate. It's AWESOME on scrambled eggs.
I can't say from personal experience, but I've heard the Cuban and chicken is to die for. Note - They don't accept AMEX.
I never get sick of this place! I've even recruited my friends, now fellow addicts, who'll drive over the bridge for it (and THAT says a lot). The list of things I love about it goes on and on: the drinks in the mason jars, that's it's always poppin (it's popular for a reason), it stays open late, the plethora of plants amidst the eclectic decor, the sweet plantains done oh so right, the rice and beans, omg, the rice and beans! Thank you for those blessed green olives in the rice!
Sol Food IS MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN MARIN!
So so so so so delicious...I love the vegetariano! The only drawback for me is that it can be hard to find a seat when it's busy. Other than that, I often dream about the comida delicioso!
I came here with four other friends on Saturday night to try the Puerto Rican food and I am impress. We ordered the plantain chips for appetizer, the Pollo Al Horno 3 piece combo with the wet plantain, Polo sandwich, Bistec sandwich and the Camarones Criollos. The plantain chips were very tasty and crispy with the special dipping sauce that sort of taste like zesty sauce. The Pollo Al Horno (chicken) is very tasty and tender but the salad that came along with it was very salty. The polo sandwich came with chicken, ham, onion, tomato and too much swiss cheese that it totally override the taste of the other ingredients. The Bistec sandwich was delicious with onion, garlic mayo, avocado and swiss cheese. I cannot comment on the Camarones since I am allergic to shrimp. We washed all this food down with a refreshing and very tasty Limeade.
The price came out to be $18.00 per person with appetizer, entree and a drink. I really like the tropical feel when I entered the restaurant with its greenish paint and bench table setup to accommodate large numbers of people. I will definitely come back for more of the Puerto Rican food.
Simply amazing! I love this place.
Saw this place originally featured on the Food Network (Diners, Drive-ins and Dives) and knew from that moment that I needed to visit when in Cali.
Please get the bistec sandwich when you go and call me to tell me all about it! Absolutely delicious.
The seating is a little different than normal. You come in the door, order at the register, get a number and then share a table wherever one is opened. Could be tough to find seating during lunch but when you do, you have that many more people to share this absolutely great experience with.
Go to this place hands down! Although I've only had the bistec sandwich, I am confident everything else is delicious! Go now!
I had the most satisfying meal of camarones criollos (prawns sauteed in a tomato-based sauce, service with rice, plantains and salad), had a piece of the bistec sandwich (goes really well with their homemade "pique" hot sauce), a side of fried plantain chips, flan, and a generously-sized glass of mango ice tea.
Being a very popular place especially during the weekends, one should expect lines, but the wait was not too bad. Very casual-style dining... seating is a bit haphazard; expect to share a large table with strangers, but the staff are helpful in getting you seated. Very cute Caribbean-style decor inside.
Why can't they open up one in LA???? I know there are only about 20 Puerto Ricans in the State of California (I'm married to one), but you've got to love this food. And Sol does it right!
Thank goodness our Cuban friend and his wife told us about Sol so that we could stop there on our way to SF from Sonoma.
I had the cuban sandwich and it was delicious and HUGE! I could only eat half. I had one of Steve's Tostones (ok maybe 2...) and they brought out some ajo on request - scrumptious.
Please, Please come to LA (but not any further than the county line or I will eat this waaaay to often and then I'll never finish losing this weight!!!!)
The BEST Puerto Rican food in the entire Bay Area!!!
They should serve more plantains with their food but other than that the food is authentic!
For some strange reason they don't serve arroz con gandules and the mofongo is not the traditional type but everything is amazing.
I recommend the bistec encebollado, the garlic prawn dish and try the chicken sandwich BUT instead of bread ask to replace it with PLATANOS! OMG! Amazing!!!
They have 2 locations: a small place which you can pick up and go. Then the main restaurant down the street. The only weird thing is the community seating. If you want a private convo it won't happen because you're sitting with strangers.
One word the Hot sauce is awesome. Pollo Horno or whatever it is called is delicious other than that the sandwiches are Meh!~
This place is amazing! Honestly, it is all in the sauces. The salad dressing is amazing and addicting yet very simple and the orange spicy sauce is a must on all main dishes....eventually you become obsessed with the sauce and use way too much of it. The food at this restaurant has a home cooked feelings and it keeps you coming back for more. I can eat here everyday and I honestly dont know why they dont branch out. Driving there from the east bay every week is such a hastle!
Yum. The food here was very good, and reasonably priced. I had the bistec meal - the small was about $9, and wasn't a huge amount of food, but was enough to recharge me for my journey back to SF.
The service is pretty bare bones - you stand in line to order, and then scavenge for a table. We had a large party, and were lucky to get to sit together.
I thought that the fried plantains were pretty much the best part of the meal. The steak was very good, and the rice was standard fare. Too bad that this place isn't in SF, or I would come here more. A great meal on the way back from wine tasting in Sonoma.
Make that 5-top-chef-stars for the Thursday special, carne guisada (gee-sa-da) a stew/pot roast of deliciousness.
The base is something with a lot of aromatics like bay leaf and bell peppers, slightly spicy but mild enough for a wimp like me.
The beef is so tender and juicy it makes me melt, the carrots are good and my favorite, green plantains.
These are green plantains, not the yellow ones you get as sides, they have the consistency of potatoes and it is just amazing and tasty.
Go now! (next Thursday)

I love this restaurant, there isn't a single piece of food that hasn't been excellent. My favorite are sweet plantains and their delicious salads. If only there was one in San Francisco too. Very reasonable priced and very filling. Free Delivery in the area.
Amazing...Good Price....Get the plantains and a limeade...yummy
