4 reviews for Sol De Espana
This is a small place that has an Old World feel that is quite authentic. It is a small family run joint with OUTSTANDING service. JUST FYI_ IT IS NOT CHEAP. I love the decor of Spanish tiles and iron. It is all quite romantic
The app's are a must - get the OCTOPUS. I promise you will love it. Also the the artichoke is quite good.
My main menu favorites are the suckling pig (which is as good as the pig I had in Madrid) , and also the (it takes about 45/50 minutes to cook) whole snapper baked in rock salt is beyond great.
Spanish wines are primary on the the wine but also try the Spanish beer.
They have a heavily laden dessert cart that won't disappoint. Some items include manchego with Membrillo jelly, orange bread pudding, flan, and cakes I cannot even begin to describe.
Great dinner of authentic Spanish food. The exterior is slightly misleading - you wouldn;t think it was a high-ish end restaurant from looking at the outside and strip mall location, but once you get in it is warm and welcoming.
In terms of food, we started with the grilled calamari which were very good, and the snails which were absolutley delicious, tomatoey/garlickey deliciousness. Then for mains we split a paella, which was just as a Paella should be, the stew weith seafood and white beans (can't remember the name) which was outstanding and then a poached fish dish which didn;t quite live up to the other two for me. By that stage we were too stuffed for dessert, so didn;t sample them. So the food overall was fantastic and exceeded expectations. Certainly prefer the food here to Jaleo which is the other Spanish restaurant I have been to recently.
Service was on the slow side, but we were there on a busy saturday night so I don't know if that is the norm, and frankly the food was worth the wait! Also fairly expensive (mains ran around $20-25, tapas at $7 or $8) but not prohibitively so.
I have to admit - it has been a LONG time since I've been to this restaurant. On the outside - it's not flashy - in a little strip mall area of rockville pike - right next to Ba le. Still, I went on a date with another foodie.
I don't remember the price, but I can tell you the halibut we had with the tomatoes and olives was OUTSTANDING! to the point that I still remember it years later. I also ordered a Paella which was authentic and tasty.
This is a mom and pop shop - but the quality and the pride is reflected in their food. Give it a whirl - I think you'll like it!
My wife and I like to visit Sol de Espana for lunch dates. The owner is usually around, either tending bar or running the kitchen. He usually says hello and is happy to make suggestions. They serve this fantastic peppery olive oil with their bread. I think I could eat a whole loaf of bread in that olive oil. We have had paella as well as a variety of other dishes. We are always very pleased with the quality, the service and the ambience is charming - not franchised mall decor. I always leave thinking this is the way grandma would have cooked (if I had a Spanish grandma).
Try it, you will like it!
