The Sofitel hotel was the best part of the WORST day of my trip to Miami -missed a flight, got my luggage stolen & had a now former "friend" act like he didn't know me in my time of need. From the great service of the desk staff - who felt my pain, to security - who saw me lost as I looked for my room and came upstairs to show me to my room, to the SUPER PLUSH bed (best bed I slept on of the three hotels - Savoy & Shelborne - I stayed at while on that trip), to the airport shuttle service that runs every 30min, I know that the next time I come to Miami for work I am staying here.
I would upload the pics I took of the hotel... but alas the AV connector for my camera was in one of the stolen luggage bags...

Colorful hotel right next to the airport. I stayed here with my mom the day before our cruise. The room was nice but had nothing to look at outside the window. Nice free fitness room and nice concierge that gave us great dining recommendations. The hotel also offers a shuttle to the port for a cheaper rate then a taxi. I got a superduper low rate via priceline and was very satisfied.

I would have liked it more if 1) I wasn't there for a work training that involved me being cooped up in a conference room for 12-14 hours a day. At least it afforded a view of the "lake," a sad, man-made affair that barely gave the illusion of beach nearby. 2) The food. I am a pain-in-the-ass traveler when it comes to food and I know I should always pack my own provisions, but people, marshmallows and hot fudge sauce as an afternoon snack?! Just b/c it's the south, does that mean everyone wants to eat like a diabetic 10-year old?
The actual hotel restaurant dinners and such were fine (great roasted half-chicken, decent veggie omelet), but if you're planning a work event there catered by the hotel, throw a Californian a bone and put some fruit or cheese out there or somp'in!!
The beds, though I was only in mine for 4 hours/night, were RAD! Pillow top mattress and down comforter (funny for a town with 100% humidity, but don't worry, you can't open the windows and AC is as integral to FL life as mountain air is to Californians).
The porn was a little more than I'm used to at $16 a flick. I bet that's something I had in common with my southern, male, marshmallow-eating, Bush-loving engineer co-workers!

It was tough to choose a rating. Going strictly on my needs as a business traveler with a client site five minutes away, it would rank as a 4. Guest services, including room service and restaurant servers definitely rated a solid 5. When I ask myself if I would be happy here on vacation, I'd go with a 3 rating.
Call it 3.5
Located about ten minutes due-south of the Miami Airport, the Miami Sofitel is conveniently adjacent to the 701 and 703 Waterford Way office complex where I was working. If you're going to spend 10 to 12 hours a day working at a client or project site and a couple more hours working in your hotel room, this is an excellent location and a good business-traveler oriented hotel. I don't think it's inexpensive, but when I'm not paying and the client is, I don't really pay attention to cost.
This hotel, among others and several other pods of corporate campuses are on a string of lakes -- I can't figure out if they're man-made lakes. There are no planes that fly over on direct approach or take-off, but at night you occasionally hear a definite 'rumble' -- not loud enough to startle or wake you up (unless you are a very light sleeper) and the windows are well insulated. There is a pool area outside as well as an outside lounge and restaurant seating area.
Location - For business, if your work destination is in the vicinity, this is perfect, but it's too far, in my opinion, to the 'fun' spots if you have limited time to get out after work unless you have a car.
Room amenities - Spacious, excellent beds, good work areas that, unfortunately, don't face the television. When I'm working in my hotel, I want to watch TV, too. The desk chair was at least upholstered and minimally comfortable, but the ergonomic Aeron knock-off in my Peoria hotel was divine. The temperatures were moderate during my stay (mid-March) so I didn't have to test the limits of the A/C.
Note to self: when you're on the road for a month and your travel includes more humid climes, make sure your hairspray doesn't run out. I like my wavy-verging on curly hair but it needs a wee spritz of spray to keep it from looking like "Little Orphan Annie" in more humid weather.
Overall decor and maintenance - Very clean. I'd call the overall decor "Excessively Spare Deco". It is well-executed in the rooms, but the public spaces, while very well kept, just didn't work for me. The two-plus storey lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows is really lovely but I don't like the harsh lines and excessive use of white in the hotel restaurant.
Water Pressure/Hot Water - Water pressure -- not great, but the hot water was excellent. Nice, comfortable bathtub for the post-work therapeutic soak.
Fast Internet - as long as you shell out 9.95 per 24 hours. Again, it's not on my dime so I don't care too much.
Room service/food - the room service servers were great and service was fast, but the menu was limited and a large pot of coffee at breakfast was egregiously expensive. The hotel restaurant menu is also limited, but the execution was good. A 15% gratuity is automatically added to your bill on any service in the restaurant. The room service adds a 19% gratuity with, I think, a $2.00 ($4.00?) delivery fee. If I were staying here on my own dime, I would expect more from the menus for the prices, even at a hotel.
Guest Services - all the service personnel were excellent, very friendly and helpful.
Jeez, talk about a long review!

I love the pillows, bed and artworks! If anything they should improve, it's the view. I got the crummy view of what's west of Miami (pretty much nothing). If you're going to stay here, get the view of Downtown (east side). Another bummer is the fact that there's no balconies. And yet another bummer... the entrance isn't really wheelchair friendly. All of these asides, it's a very comfy hotel in a business area of Miami (Blue Lagoon) just south of the airport.

I'm giving this place three stars simply because I was there for a conference and didn't have to pay for room or meals. However, I would not elect to stay here if I was traveling to Miami for a vacation. The location of the hotel is very close to the airport and at a distance from the other attractions/points of interest around Miami and South Beach. The cab fare in Miami is astronomical ($25 + tip one way to travel seven miles!?) and while the Sofitel will rent you a car, they'll also charge you to park it in their lot. True the beds are very comfortable, the lobby and bar/lounge area beautifully appointed, and there's plenty of interesting art - but my room smelled moldy, two out of three mornings I didn't have hot water, and with only three elevators you are always stuck waiting. Not a place I want to spend my hard earned, personal dollars at.

normally i don't stay in fancy pants hotels b/c of the price, but on expedia i was able to book a nonsmoking kingsize bed here at this extremely fancy pants hotel because the expedia rate for sofitel was only $16 more than the days inn-calibre motels, so i figured, hey why not?
when i saw my room, i wanted to live there forever. true, the view isn't much. true, it's far from downtown miami. true, there's no hot tub. but who needs these things when the bed is so damn comfortable? fabulous firm mattress w/smooshy mattress cover and a glorious comforter- none of the multiple layers of flannel sheet+cotton sheet+ plus polyester comforter that you get at motels. the shower is just as nice as the bed- water from cold (which my partner likes) to scalding (which i like), with various pressure settings.
food: you can get a sandwich and fries at the bar for $13 or go to the restaurant like me and split a filet mignon w/your partner ($28). or skip dinner and order a pint of ben and jerry's thru room service (19% gratuity AND $2 service charge!?!).
in other words, this was paradise for a motel rat like me.
