Manhattan, NY
I would agree this place is hipstery. But i'm kinda hipster, so it worked.
At first I thought it was just a small dark bar with tables and that was okay.
I prepared to pick a table and get something at the bar. Then I saw another room on the side...A large room with couches couches couches and people sitting on them.
The tables had small candles fighting for attention with the few overhead lights that were still on. People spoke in quiet tones with smiles. The waitress assured me she would bring me all I needed. I found something at the back, removing the layers I had erected against the harsh weather we were having. I splayed on a velvet looking red couch , making myself as alluring as possible for my date and ordered a "dark and stormy" and a pizza W veggies
I don't know what else to say, except the service was good, the food was middling (too many olives & I had ordered all 3 veggies but only 2 arrived via pizza top-no explanation given)
The bathroom i used was nice and cleanenoughforaprettyintensemakeoutsession
aaaaannnd there are curtains.
Not in the bathroom, though. In the couches room. Well one curtain. Great for a date, or a group of friends. -

Why why whyyyy do we always end up herrrrre? I wish it weren't such a central, easy location. But that is also why it deserves at least a star or two.
There are things that are good: decent bev prices. Couches for sitting in groups.
That is it, I think. Sometimes the music is decent. Most of the time it is sneaky and starts off chill... then 10 minutes into your hangtime it turns into thumpingbassdancymusic. Stop that!
The servers are all really cool, too. I just can't get into it that much. It's always a stop along the way, though. -

soda bar is the classic three star bar.
its the kind of place you go to with a friend if you want to chat over a beer with no frills or fuss. soda bar's predictability and lack of distinctness is it's main attraction.
i've been to this place several times yet find it difficult to think of things that make it stand apart from other bars. its a little dimmer than most i guess? slightly more dive'y maybe?.. i dont know, its a bar with the usual bar stuff. nothing to write home about really.
i guess soda bar is the kind of place that is what you make of it. no it wont wow on its own, but it also wont let you down should you chose to lead a party through its doors.
places like this are needed. -
Review from Chey H.
I decided to invite my friends out for birthday drinks at Soda Bar. I had never been before but heard good things about the place and wanted to go somewhere other than Franklin Park. It definitely has a dive feel--but a classy dive feel. The front room was packed but the back room had a feel couches and chairs open. One thing I feel like no one has mentioned that if you sit in the back there you order from a waitress. I ordered a drink from the bar not knowing but the bartender was nice about it. The crowd was good for a Saturday night--a bit on the older side. I enjoyed the female dj who started playing after 12. We didn't stay to see anyone start dancing, but I'm sure it happened. I got a pretty good feeling from Soda Bar so I'll be back for more.

This is an excellent bar where friends can gather and have a good time either indoors or outdoors when the weather permits. The service is excellent, the drinks are delicious and the onion rings are da bomb! I definitiely will be visiting again in the future!

Really good pierogi. I came for the pierogi and they were worth it.
Good happy hour til 7pm. Great burgers with amazing buns. Seriously I would have any sandwich on that bun! -

Price: Okay
Highlight: The plush mismatched couches
If this were in my neighbourhood I'd be here all the time. One night it can be a chill place to sit by the bar, another night to sink into a plush couch and another night to go when it is crowded and dancing to some music with friends. Each time I have been I have had a good time and it is near to the train and the Brooklyn Museum. -

Throw your picklebacks in the air,
And wave 'em like you just don't care
Wanna have a good time at Soda Bar,
Somebody say oh yeah!!
Saturday nights at Soda are all that! S/O to Rich at Soda Bar, big ups to you for putting me on to the pickleback shot. Jameson followed by pickle juice.....weirdly good! The female DJ (I didn't get her name) was spinning the hot tunes and I was breaking it down like I had an alter ego. The layout is cool with vintage chairs and couches with a laidback cool feel. There's also an outside area to chill and smoke or just shoot the breeze.
I was definitely feeling the night as well as the spot.Listed in: 10pm-6am...The Real Party…

Review from Jia J.
Soda Bar is one of the places on the growing Vanderbilt Strip where you can get a good classic hard drink without being bothered. Counterintuitively, balmy nights are good for a date or total solitude because everyone rushes towards the outdoor seating and leaves the fantastically creepy, ceiling-fan-cooled parlor completely and totally empty. Don't worry, the server will find you.
Some of the seating is stained and crummy, as if right out of some perv's sketchy '70s van. Other chairs, though, look like forgotten relics from French palaces. When their backs are facing you, their spirits permeate the air - you get the feeling that a ghost will whirl around to face you, or that you'd see a dessicated corpse in eternal recline if you peered around the front. But in a cool way. There aren't any cobwebs of neglect in the room.
Picked up a gin gimlet here with a friend. The drink arrived watered down on top from the melting ice, but this was forgiveable because the cup was at the perfect level of cold and condensation for a hot night - truly an adult's lemonade (or limeade, shall we say) to usher in the hot season.
The music was heavily Motown, set at just the right volume from mounted speakers in the corners. An acoustic, almost gritty soul recording of Dusty Springfield almost brought tears of joy.
This is an easy go-to bar that's probably a favorite for some locals, but it's not going to be mine. Why this is is as vague as the wind from the blades of the whirring fan. It was just nice to stop by for a single drink, but I didn't feel like having ten more drinks and sleeping over, if you know what I mean.
All and all, I'd say this is a proper starting out spot or one-drink date place early on in the eve. -

This is one of my favorite spot to hang with either friends or that 'special" someone.
I mean this place can either be for a romantic night then have a walk in the Prospect Park, or it can be a nght with friends hanging out.
This place welcomes every background, cultures, race, gender, they have it all.
It's a very friendly environment where you come across it all.
I suggest you get there early about 5ish or so that way you can find a great spot to sit down.....
..BEWARE: at the end of the night it turns into somewhat a club-it gets very crowded. -
Review from Kelsey T.
I don't spend a lot of time in Prospect Heights, but if I did, I would be a frequent patron of Soda Bar. The seating, while not new and upscale, has a worn-in comfortable feel. It was difficult to find a table on a Saturday night, but with a little persistence we succeeded.
Soda Bar has a bit of a divey feel to it, but that goes nicely with the cheap beer and overall laid-back vibe. The bill was so cheap, I initially thought there was an error - until checking the bill and finding every item accounted for. -
Review from cait l.
Yeah, this was a disaster. I love dive bars, but after waiting 20 minutes at the bar and being repeatedly ignored for other incoming patrons, I left. What a shame. Oh, and the place was filthy. Not in a good dive way. Went to woodwork down the street and enjoyed a nice pint.

Waited for 15 minutes at the bar on a quite Sunday afternoon. The bartender walked past twice but never took our order. We tried to get her attention. No luck. In the entire time we were there, the bartender served two drinks. Maybe she didn't like the look of us. Maybe she was having a very off day. Either way, we never got served. This was the first time I have ever had to walk out of an establishment because of service. I was very confused and offended.

I like you, Soda Bar. Big range of people who come here, and the music selections are pretty much ripped off of my iPod (this is a good thing, people).
Huge, too, lots of seating inside and out. It gets kind of dead on weeknights, but is pretty hopping on Thursdays and Fridays.
AND, good Happy Hour specials from 4-7. -

Hipster hangout -- cool vibe and great outdoor seating in the back.
Prices for drinks are pretty cheap but there's also nothing too fancy here. If you want something to munch on, their fries are pretty decent. -

The first time I came here I was thrilled to step into a thriving dance party in the back room. I was just as happy to come back another evening (a Saturday, I think) with a couple of friends and sit out back on the patio to catch up. I love how easily Soda bar switches back and forth between raging and chilling.

I've been here a few times now, and every time I leave feeling great. It's a fairly mellow lounge that sports great space and cozy seating. I always meet my friend 'g' who stays around the corner from it, making it an ideal spot for the both of us.
Friendly, attractive service and an awesome outdoor patio in the back. -

Patio out back so you can eat outside. Staff is usually very friendly and helpful and accommodating to our little toddler. Food is pretty good. Watch out for the mustard because they only have one kind and it is SPICY.
Great beer selection and a good happy hour too. -

Cool place. Very eclectic crowd and the drinks are good. The music is always good, too. I would visit more often but my partner-in-crime abandoned me for milder Southern temps and my trips to Brooklyn are far and few between.

Hipster Heaven.
That's said with love. This place is not your regular crowd. Eclectic folks, all walks of life, and everybody's friendly.
Try the Pickle Back. Whiskey chased with pickle juice. Kind of an acquired taste, but once you get it... it's love.
One of the things which really makes this bar stand out is the crowd. The people who show up here are fantastic! I've made friends with total strangers, film makers, freelance web designers, actors, programmers, engineers from Minnesota, city employees, bartenders FROM OTHER BARS. The bartenders know the place to be, and the fact that they choose to be here says volumes.
The bartenders for Soda Bar themselves are wonderful. Friendly, fast, and happy to be serving up the joy. And my good lord they do a heavy pour. =D What's served up as a single here would qualify as a triple in other bars up and down Vanderbilt.
The kitchen does pretty good food as well. I had a salmon pizza. First of all... where else will you find that? I shared a plate of fries which were DIVINE. Crispy, salty, thin cut goodness.
The patio space out back is spacious and allows smoking.
Looking for a good Friday or Saturday night in Prospect Heights? Go here. -

This place is truly awesome! Everything about it: location, drinks, prices, and atmosphere are right on! They have plenty of comfy seating indoors and a really big outdoor area too. This has been my go-to bar for years!
I had my birthday party there and the waitress handled 35 people (all paying separately) beautifully! I didn't have to worry about a thing, and I didn't get stuck with the bill at the end. I was impressed.
The only reason I withheld the last star is because the music used to be AMAZING!!!!! And now it's not. It definitely ruins the experience for me, but again, everything else is still awesome and each time I go, I say a little prayer that they bring back their awesome DJ. -

Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY
Ever walk into a dimly lit bar bathroom completely stone sober and the smell is so noxious, and the walls, floor and mirror so coated with grime (wtf is that?), that you feel like you've downed 10 shots and are ready for a pukathon? No? I hadn't either... Until I walked into Soda Bars bathroom. I could feel it seep into my pores. Even as I held my breath, I could remember the stench like it was a hundred 8 month old urinal cakes piled into a room. (I'm about to vomit just thinking about it)
Dear Soda Bar, CLEAN THAT SHIT UP. Literally. Have some respect for yourself (and your customers) as a place that serves food. Are your employees using that bathroom? Why bother making them wash their hands, just being in that room makes them not qualified to go within 20 ft of any ones dinner or drink.
The Experience:
We sat, we waited for a few and then decided "hey let's checkout what they have on tap for their seasonal beers." We tip toed to the counter only to be met with a booming woman startling us with "I'll be serving you, have a seat."
OK, That's cool. We sit/ run to our seats and apologize and ask what they have on tap that's seasonal. She names 2 of the X amount of beers. That's it. We're left to wonder what the other 4 or 5 taps she didn't name are.
The check didn't come, so we went up to get change for a 20 and just drop the money on the table and go. The bartender.... didn't have change.....
The drinks are so- so. I asked if it was strong, she confirmed it was. It wasn't. The atmosphere is great so 5 stars for that. Minus four for the bathroom. -

My friends rave about this place and are regulars here. I thought it was alright...I mean, all I really needed was some alcohol after a long work week. I would have been happy with a Four Loko in an alley. There's a nice outdoor area, where you can drink to your heart's content during temperate weather. Beer & drink specials were good. The food was surprisingly decent.
So why only three stars? Here's where I go on my rant. Beware of the hoards of Park Slope mommies out with their kids at the bar. I mean there were a lot of them, at the bar and outside on the patio area. We had to sit in the furthest corner of the patio area, in the shade of a building, because two mommies had FIVE kids with them. Maybe Chancellor Black was right, can we get some birth control?!
Note to Park Slope Bar Mommies: The last thing I need after a difficult work week is to watch my language and level of inebriatedness because you decided to take your children to the bar. Next time, you're out at the bar and see someone with a scowl sitting as far away from you as possible, know it's me! -

So finally a woman bought me a drink* during a recent evening visit to Soda Bar. Unfortunately she was decidedly not a hottie in a snug leather minidress, but a free drink is a free drink. That $6 remaining in my pocket can go towards two happy hour beers the next time I'm at Soda Bar earlier in the day.
A recent shift in the beer selection is disappointing, as Greenport Harbor Ale and Lagunitas IPA were replaced by less preferred brews. There's still Stone Arrogant Bastard, Six Point Sweet Action, Old Speckled Hen and Bluepoint Toasted Lager, though. Respectable enough for $3 pints, but not the murderer's row of beers it previously was with Bluepoint now batting cleanup.
The blackboard list of wines has been updated too, now for Chardonnay it simply states "Chard". Apparently the updater of the wine list was not much appreciative of the sense of humor of the Soda Bar blackboard vandalist.
----------
* our approximate conversation, if perhaps a bit paraphrased/truncated:
"What's that beer you're drinking?"
"Old Speckled Hen."
"That's not a good name, I don't want to drink that beer."
"Yeah, lots of beers have bad names, it's good though."
"I want to buy you a beer."
"Oh, that's kind of you, but not necessary, you don't have to do that."
"Excuse me, bartender!" (woman orders drinks for herself and her friends) "What was that beer? Heck...heckled old wren?"
"Old Speckled Hen."
"And a Whole heck...Spectacled Hen."
"You mean Old Speckled Hen?"
"Yeah. That one."
(bartender brings over a few cocktails and an Old Speckled Hen, the woman looks at the beer, confused)
"Hey what's that? I didn't order that!"
"That's your Old Speckled Hen."
"Huh???"
(our hero takes a sip of his fresh beer)
"Hey thanks, that was very kind of you."
(our hero goes on to charm the woman, taking care not to literally charm the pants off her. our hero is quite debonair that way.)Listed in: Central Brooklyn

We stopped in here last night for a burger fix.
The Good:
Great Burger/fries/drinks - will come back
The Bad:
the waitress seemed to have a chip on her shoulder, nice and attentive, but after reading other reviews I see that this is common
The Ugly:
JEEZ PLEASE clean up the restroom and a basic Bleach down would be good for this place

In my attempt to review all my neighborhood staples, oh Soda Bar, I love outdoor seating option in the back but, this bar gets weird sometimes. The crowd it attracts at different times is really odd. Part dance bar at times, part local yocal dive, part beer garden in the back, this place has an identity crisis. I come when I'm in the mood to be left alone in teh dark, I agree the comfy mismatched couches are cool. But it's not my go-to bar for the hood. I rather walk down to washington commons or hang at woodwork.

I love this place!!! The food is Great & reasonably priced. So are the drinks. Not a place to go dancing but they play various types of music. A very nice lounge area in the back. There's an outside lounge area as well but I haven't visited there yet. Only con I'd say is the music can get Very loud at times, can't really carry a decent convo

Soda is evil, but Soda Bar is good. Seating is ample, whether you chose to sit at the bar, in the lounge, or in the popular patio in the back. The lounge reminds me of a cross between the furniture section of the Salvation Army and the basement of a frat house. The bartender was very friendly, and the drink specials suited my fancy perfectly. I stuck with the Wild Tea Lemonade with fresh mint, which was divine. The wine list was a little small, but they had plenty of beers on tap. One person in my group got the mozzarella sandwich, which looked good. I can't speak to the rest of the food menu. The waitress allowed our large group to commandeer the bulk of the lounge and pay separately, without the slightest eye roll/grimace.

Soda Bar is a great neighborhood bar. Solid beer selection (I love me some Sixpoint Sweet Action). It's one of my favorite places to go on a weeknight to lounge on the couches and enjoy some bar food....
... And their food is really good. Especially the veggie burger. For the non-veggies, order it with bacon. And blue cheese. Mmmm. Also, my boyfriend is obsessed with their mustard - it's standard Chinese hot mustard, but it gives an amazing kick to your french fries. I have also heard good things about their pizza and pierogies.
Often, I just don't have the patience for weekend nights here - too crowded and not enough seating space (despite the fact that the space itself is huge). But if you are lucky enough to score a patio table on a hot summer night, go for it.
I've also been there on multiple occasions when space is reserved for parties. Sure it sucks when there's an open couch but I can't sit down because it's saved for a group ends up never even shows up, but on the other hand, I'm not too sure many bars even reserve space for people anymore. Therefore, it's a nice gesture on their part and something to keep in mind for those of you who want to plan a birthday party or some other event. Just make sure to show up to your dang event, on time, because my feet get sore, yo. Other people could be sitting during the hour or two that you're just putzing around.
Service can be painfully slow at times. Especially on those summer nights when there is only one server covering all of the tables, indoor AND outdoor. -

We walked into this place and immediately gave it no chance of surviving. It was trying too hard to be hip, and failing. Fake old in the retro-category, and not done that well. Turn the lights down, get them tipsy, and no one will notice how cynical the design of this whole place is.
That was the month it opened in 2002 or so. I still think this place is totally lame, but I give it 1 star for existing and 1 star for pulling one over on the post-collegiate white people of Prospect Heights. Well done! -
Review from Jim U.
As a bar, this place is very nice. They have a spacious outdoor area, and multiple rooms inside creating a mixed ambience. It's heavy with Brooklynites and definitely has a neighborhood bar feel to it. Drafts were unbelievably cheap at $3 each, and I was pleased with the selection. Lagunitas IPA? Alright!
As a place to eat, the story is dismal by comparison. I was very pleased with the offering of Polish specialties like kielbasa and pierogies -- I very well could have been at a hometown bar! Ah, but when my kielbasa sandwich arrived, I soon realized the difference. Kielbasa served without sauerkraut on focaccia bread with mayonnaise?? What the hell kind of fusion, avant-garde, reinterpretation of a classic sandwich was this? If it sounds terrible, I guarantee that it tasted worse. The sausage was chain supermarket grade and had little taste to it. Everything else about the sandwich was wrong traditionally and taste-wise as well. A regrettable flavor profile that even a good beer could not fully have me forget. The service was fairly good though.
So, in short, come for the beer, hang out, and enjoy the space. When you get hungry, be sure to go elsewhere. -

I only come here to have a nice beer and get their amazing chicken wings...
If they ever got rid of that.... I'll probably never come back... honest but true.
I don't know when they started to play some hiphop/ techno /rap blend music instead of just rock music... but I love it... Too much of a certain kind of rock music hurts my ears..
service was not bad in the times I went. I hope they keep it up next time i come.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Brooklyn, NY
Alrighty, it's more of a 3.5 star. Went there around 9:45pm on a weeknight. There are people but not crowded at all. Weather was nice so almost all patrons sat outside.
The place is pretty big with tons of worn (but not broken) looking couches. The outside patio was huge and nice. The venue isn't very dive-y as some previous reviews stated. I have obvious gone to hardcore dive bars that make this place alright?
Our waitress seemed to be slightly overwhelmed since she was the only one running around for all the tables in the patio. She was a good sport and humorous, which always helps. I was in good company so perhaps I didn't mind too much that she didn't pick up our food trays right away after we consumed the burgers and appreciated that she apologized for not doing it so promptly.
The Lamb burger was tasty, although if the meat were more marinated it would have been awesome. M.'s bacon cheese burger... wow the bacon was delicious and it made the burger very yummy.
The beers were cheapass for sure.
I'm totally fine with coming here again to hang out with friends. I would however have a problem if it were after the First Saturdays or when it is packed. -
Review from Matt L.
Brooklyn, NY
The waitress was SUPER nice, but they have a ridiculous system where you pay with the server, not the barkeep. So it takes an extra 30 minutes to get a burger, an extra ten minutes to get a beer, an extra 15 to get a check, etc.
Why can't places make it easy to get what you want? Asking the bartender for a beer and a burger shouldn't become some sort of weird stand off about their policies.
I'd say there would probably be better bars in Prospect Heights, but I don't plan on being around enough to sniff them out. If you're feeling adventurous though, you might as well find something else because you aren't missing much here.
1.5 stars rounded up to two.
Ah, the burger was ok but it seemed like it had been sitting out for awhile before it got to me, probably because of the one ridiculously overworked server. -

I have had mixed experiences here.
For parties: meh.
Late afternoon drinks: sure.
Bartenders know their stuff. Outdoor seating is nice. The inside is kind of dark and creepy, even at night. Not a date spot. Good hang out spot for friends. Not a party spot. -

So I wanted to give this place atleast a 4...I mean, at the VERY least, a 3. I came over here because it was where the Yelpers ran off to after the event at Franklin Park was all done. I was at the Park watching the Jets game, and decided to shoot over there and continue watching the game and have a drink or two with Matteo and others. My plan, was foiled.
I walk up to the bar and the sign outside says "12-7pm happy hr, $3 drafts". Ok sweeeet! Then below that it says, Big Screen TV. Double SWEEET! I walk in and see one not so big flat panel in the bar, that isn't even on! So i'm like, nah this ain't the big screen they were yappin about outside. I walk around, go outside, no other TVs! SAY WHAT! How am I supposed to watch this game?!
I go up to the bartender and order a cider ($3, not bad) and I'm like, "Hey can you turn on the JETS game?" She says, "no I can't, my manager is weird." SAY WHATTTTT?! So I can't watch the Jets play the stupid patriots?! Are you kidding me?! Honestly this place woulda gotten 1 star if it wasn't for that delicious cider being only $3. They're LUKKY the Jets won too, or I woulda been REALLY pissed! My point is, don't come in here if you're a sports fan...go somewhere else... -

What I like about Soda is it doesn't do too much to be a good bar. They have great food (the burgers are awesome. and so are the onion rings!) plenty of room for people who want to eat, who want to sit at the bar, or who want to go and relax on a sofa in the other room. There's also an OK sized patio in the back that closes fairly early.
They always have decent beers on tap, the bartenders are pretty friendly, even though the waitress service can tend to be a bit slow.
In the end, it was the first bar and one of the only good bars around here that I went to once I moved here. I'm glad it's still there and people continue to go thereListed in: Best Happy Hour

I am a fan of this place, the dance party was awesome. BUT the female DJ asked 50 dollars for a request- WHAT?! That is ridiculous. She was stuck in a rut playing the same genre over and over- come on take a recommendation.. geez.
