Anything you could ever want for outrageously cheap prices.

I've found furniture, I've found amazing vintage clothing, I've found various house decor, dishware, used cars etc, etc, ETC.
There is lots to dig through so plan on spending a bit of time there sifting through junk, but you'll be happy you did. No where else can I spend twenty bucks and walk out with a huge bag of great vintage finds.
There are no dressing rooms, so no room to be a prude if you're concerned about the way things fit.
They've got hella parking so no need to worry about that.

For those who complain about not finding amazing furniture, run across the street to REVIVAL and snap up theirs. It's pricier, but it's beautiful furniture. What do you expect from a $20 couch from St Vincents?

For those of us who get thrills out of discovering jewels in the middle of trash, this is definitely a place worthy of a weekly visit.

I have been to this place twice in the hopes of finding some cheap furniture.  Most of the stuff looked like rejected yard sale items.

Couldn't you just get most of this stuff by driving through various neighborhoods of L.A. and buying from a yard sale or picking it from the giveaways on the front lawn?  I put out a 5 drawer file cabinet  yesterday and it was gone by morning.  I put out a desk with 2 drawer file cabinet today and it was gone in a few hours.  And it was nicer than the stuff at this store.

And someone educate me about the fervor displayed by shoppers for used clothing?  you would think they were digging for dollar bills they jumped on boxes of old skanky clothing.  At least I was able to assess the dollar value of the file cabinet I put out yesterday: $25.

Sure, it's filthy, the staff is sometimes rude, and there's a lot of crap to sift through, but it's also full exciting and diverse treasures and the cheapest couches and coffee tables you'll find anywhere! We got a giant light blue/light lime green striped nubby couch for $25 and they helped us load it into our truck. I also got a really nice solid wood mid-century coffee table for $20. The clothing is hit-or-miss but there are decent housewares and nice looking cabinets. I don't know who prices this stuff but they're probably stoned because it's super random and usually benefits the shoppers.

Once you search through the junk to find the gems, then take the furniture home and give it a good cleaning, it's usually great quality and totally worth the effort!

I think this is the mega thrift store of all thrift stores. They have tons of furniture more of some than others. Tons of side tables, coffee tables, chairs, and head boards. Not gonna lie--It was a little overwhelming at first.

Negatives:
Some of the furniture where just Dirty...I know..I know..it's a thrifty store, but this one the stuff was especially filthy. For instance, I found one dresser that I wanted and luckily I opened the drawers to see what it looked like inside and...it had the yuckiest gooey brownish blackish stain on the inside of the drawer. Barf. I can't put my clothes in there. But here's why I still like this place,

Positives:
I had just bought a vintage chair for my boring Ikea table and found something very similar for $8 here, while I paid $10 at Out of the Closet. Then I found an old school bright blue petite type writer, made in England for $4.99 (it's for display folks. I have a computer).

I came here in an attempt to find furnishings to adorn my admittedly less-than-swanky bachelor pad.  The prices on everything were reasonable, but I could not find a single thing worth buying.  All the furniture looks like someone has died in it (which they may have), with the exception of some desks - unfortunately I had no need of one.  I can see some potential on some of the things they have here, if you are willing to invest some time and effort into it (ie., they had a few bed headboards that were quite lovely). However, given that the location of the place isn't really near anything resembling civilization, I would rather go to a place that wasn't so hit and miss and save myself the drive. I've had more luck at my local Goodwill.

Just bought three pieces (seems to be the lucky number for that place) one silp leopard dress shirt, a kimono style lightweight jkt, and a oversized jcrew sweater - all for just $9....and accidently threw away in the trash?!?!?!??!!? tried diving the dumpster - ok skimmed the surface...but, for those of you who sympathize - you know what its like to find the perfect vintage, one of a kind of pieces - and then lose them...they are forever gone peeps...so sad, soooooo sad!! but love this place, im sure ill find more great things. this is a good place for people with an eye for vintage- who knows how to take a great vintage piece and make them your own! if you need an AWESOME cheap alter - let me know. most pieces people would oversee - are treasures for me to keep!!

Bought 3 jackets for under $16.00. Took one to the tailors to have the shoulders taken in, and the sleeves taken in to be more fitted. GREAT BUYS!!!

I love thrift shops. This one you definitely have to look, but i looove the prices, and the long isles to sift through. you could find so many things here!!

The reason for 4 stars and not 5....well, not a big shoe or bag selection. :(

There's a LOT of junk here...and not always the good kind. True, you'll have to sift through a mountain of dross to find the occasional jewel. And it's definitely not for the dirt-phobic (it's basically a warehouse and the "merchandise" doesn't got through any sorting or cleaning because it gets put up for sale). And this place is BIG so allow a couple of hours at least.

I found one of my most prized pieces of furniture here, a beautiful art deco waterfall-slope dark red writing desk (I'm guess 1930's). Instead of getting snapped up by an antiques vulture, cleaned and sold for $100+ in some pretentious Melrose "vintage" shop, it's now proudly displayed in my home. The best $35 bucks I'd ever spent on a piece of furniture.  And SVDP's has an AMAZING assortment of old schoolroom/office desks and old file cabinets that would look jaw-dropping in someone's home (with a bit of love and cleaning).

A word of warning for furniture hounds: they only hold purchases up to twenty-four hours, so bring a truck, or bring a truck-driving friend if you think you'll in the market for something bigger than a breadbox.

You know what? I'm glad some people are too lazy to walk past the front door, or  once they're inside dig through the mountains of trash for treasure, or stop by once a week like true thrifters do instead of getting discouraged and writing a bad review and never coming back. Go back to your vintage hand picked refurbished overpriced trendy stores in Los Feliz and West Hollywood and leave the real deals for the rest of us.

If you're not bitter, jaded, lazy, dust-phobic, or lacking in DIY skills, stop by St. V's for furniture, lamps, and other housewares that need a little TLC but generally have great structure- I fall in love with a side chair almost every visit! Clothing is def. a digging game- there are no dressing rooms so plan ahead with your outfits for trying on. Different colored tags= better discounts, so keep an eye on what you're grabbing as you go. Haggling is not impossible (like it is at Goodwill-ugh), especially when buying large quantities or if you notice flaws in what you're attempting to purchase.

And I'm sorry Steph, but I'm pretty sure you won't find dozens of pairs of J Brand Jeans, FIDM student project dresses, or other artsy designer samples like Literature Noir at Talbots or Kohl's... just saying. (p.s. a lot of the cuter clothes for women do seem to be on the smaller side- this may be a reason for complaints, but don't be deterred if you are a wee lass.)

And they get 4 stars because the employees are very nice, even if they tend to be non-existent, and to help negate all those "one star wonder" reviewers who have only walked in once or twice and are afraid of a little dirt.

Broke-down, bad taste, soiled particle board graveyard. Crapload of mugs and kitchenware previously molested by hundreds of mouths. Shoddy museum of obsolete technology and fashion mistakes. Decent book section perfumed by potential perverts. Why do I keep coming back to you? I've never even bought one item, but as in life, I always hope for more. I see possibility hidden between the dented file cabinets and bad Christmas records. At least my bf has made away with a $7 newish pair of Converse Chucks. A glimmer of hope.

At risk of sounding insane, I believe I spotted a time-traveller there. You heard me. A gentleman in a jaunty fedora with a feather and fitted grey suit, bouncing along with his perfect posture and a half smile on his old-world kind of face. He asked the cashier about some vintage ice cream glasses behind the counter. Headed to a little ice cream social, are we? Pre-1904 World's Fair invention of the cone, hmm? Really, St. Vincent is probably the perfect place to find substitute parts for a time machine, research evolution of technology, and grab most excellent clothing from eras gone by in case one needed to fit in at the next destination (especially if it were the 70s-80s). Party on, dudes.

Is everyone blind?!  This has got to be the WORST thrift store I've ever been to.  The clothes are all overpriced pieces of crap.

I guess if you're into that late 90s-early-2000s K-Mart/Kohl's stuff you'll love it.  Talbot's and Sonoma Classics galore.  American Apparel isn't even THAT ironic.

Yuck, yuck, yuck.

If you're expecting to walk into a cutely decorated overpriced hipster  candy shop, then you might as well not come here at all.

Set aside some time and really search through everything. You'll surface with something really awesome, or something that has the potential to be awesome. The Goodwill is a stone's throw away so if you don't find anything here, you can try your luck a few blocks away.

Man!  I really want to write a good review of this place.  I mean...it's huge, the departments are big, parking out front...but, it sucks!

Sorry guys!

Although it is big, the selection is all of the same, each bookcase looks like they came out of the 80's...actually all the furniture does.  Oh and the clothes, and housewares....and ummm yeah everything.

I love thrift stores, but this one just isn't cool.  Never found anything vintage and worth buying.  The cost is expensive as well.

If you guys know of any REAL Thrift stores, let me know...

For the people who have reviewed that this place is "dirty" and that you should bring gloves, etc, I ask them: "Have you ever been to a thrift shop before?" 99.9% of them are dirty because they acquired their products for FREE!

That said, I want to make it clear that no one should avoid this thrift store because it may be "yuckier" than the rest -- it's a downtown Thrift Store! What do you expect?!

The only thing that sets this place apart from other thrift stores is its size - it's HUGE! Honestly as big as a large grocery store. Lots of clothes and shoes (on the left side/back of the building, go through the furniture dept to find them!); lots of furniture (bed frames, headboards, desks, drawers, furniture pieces, table and chair units, etc); lots of books (as in bigger than a library sale!); lots of choch-kas (including some old wedding dresses!); electronics, dvds, records, cd's, even a large assortment of  used Skis and Golf clubs.

Also, for those of you who were wondering, this IS the thrift store from the Top Design season 2 premier. Of course the designers didn't like it - you had to SEARCH for "cool" items and even use a little creativity, rather than point and pick like at the Pacific Design Center!

If you like thrift stores and the thrill of finding a good deal (literal on the finding part) - than this is the place for you! You can even get a hot dog the local cart outside of the store when you are done for the road ;)

Waste transfer station or thrift store? You decide! You'll find here splintered and damaged particle board furniture, rows of used mattresses, broken and irregular chairs, all sorts of soiled and damaged sundry bric-a-brac that look like they were Goodwill discards. I recommend donning a Tyvek body suit to avoid picking up any bed-bugs on your clothes. Be sure to check out the awesome collection of post apocalyptic Katrina Cars and derelict boats in the back parking lot!

That being said the clothing section fares a little better. The selection was priced a bit high but at least it was well lit an organized.

Over the past ten years this place has changed a lot, like frog town itself. This place used to be the best place to get great clothing and furniture for low prices. However since the hipsters and movie junkies have discovered it the prices are now too high and the low income families that used this place to furnish their homes and buy clothing for kids no longer can afford the prices.
Yay gentrification!!!

Get over it this place is dirty! Because its a real thrift store not some overpriced hipster joint with crap!

Granted this place does have a lot of junk BUT there is some treasures. I found the most incredible vintage chair that was in mint condition that only cost $20 dollars. Anywhere else they would have marked it up to $100/$200.

I go here once or twice a month to see what kind of finds there are. I recommend checking it out and getting over the "dirty" and see what kind of treasures you can find!

I have to admit -- my expectations were high.  I actually read the reviews on yelp before going so I knew what to expect -- a dirty experience in a very trashy part of our beloved city.

Unfortunately, I didn't find any gems in the trash.  Admittedly, tons of people are hitting Thrift stores these days as jobs continue to be lost.  Donations are dropping as people are now trying to sell their stuff in lieu of giving it away.

Alas, I wasn't impressed with their selection.  But, that may not be their fault at this point.  But the prices on Speakers and Electronics are WAY overpriced.  3x the amount of other Thrift Stores.

I will say that the staff were very nice and helpful.

The parking was better than most Thrift stores I've been to.

The most interesting phenomenon here is the "as-is yard," which, when it opens, hosts a mad rush of people like a herd of mad cows pushing and shoving to find the hidden "gems" to pay their rent.  It puts Black Friday to shame (and I'm not kidding!).

At any rate, it certainly is leaps and bounds better than the Goodwill Clearance Center right around the corner.

To each his own.  :)

I never knew the meaning of disorganization until I came to Vincent's.

Since I suffer from LOF (Lack of Furniture) I came here hoping to score some cool buys for my apartment. While I did see some "maybes", nothing really stole my heart. And believe me, they have quite a few entertainment centers - I was just looking for a bookcase... maybe even a small table for my compact kitchen. I ended up going to IKEA afterwards... but I give this place four stars not for it's lackadaisical format, or even it's unhelpful staff who seem to glare or roll their eyes at you even without you approaching them - or even the competitive patrons, but because it's got more selection than a lot of other thrift places. And you can't expect to hit gold the first time you come here (you can though) so you have to come here a lot, which is what I might do - next month... when I get more money.

Honestly, a lot of the stuff today was a bit on the cheesy "why do they expect I'll pay that much for a stinkin _____" end. If you want some quality vintage furniture items/home stuff, hit up Revival across the street.

This place is also great for finding used electronics, VCRs, sound systems, type writers, books, old game systems (we're talking SEGA cartridge-days people...), toasters - and even though I didn't check it out, a major amount of clothing.

STRAIGHT UP THIRFT STORE SHOPPING HEAVEN!!!!! and if you are a vintage/thrift shopper you know you gotta hunt, the stores are usually not plush or well-organized, and if you find something you like - jump on it like hyenas attacking a wounded wildebeest.

the customer service here is poop (hope you didn't want that suit on the mannequin). But the clothes are organized pretty well into sections and there are lots of dresses. there's a sale section (SWEET BUDDHA!!!! can it get any cheaper!?!?!?!?), look for the colored tags of the week and get half off. the book area is its own small library, and the furniture selection spans most of the main building (though some of it has really been around the block). you know how most thrift stores kinda dump linens into a bin and you have to sift through - NOT HERE- it was a rainbow of bed sheets that were neatly hung up, easily peruse -able.

there's a parking lot in the front. they accept credit cards but pay attention to which register you go to - the one in the front doesn't ring up clothing and i had to hoof it back through the store. if you willing to do some digging you can score big - if i told you how much i paid for my BCBG prom dress you'd want to beat me senseless with quarter-filled socks out of jealousy. i also picked up a handmade Telavera plate from Mexico for three bones. FYI: No fitting rooms, thats right, just mirrors so wear a tank top and slip stuff over your clothes. ghetto-style!  Don't be a consumer whore - re-use instead of buying new (when possible)!!!!

The biggest thrift store in the US, I was told by an employee.  They even sell CARS!  I think that production wardrobe and fashion district folks donate here.  I've found designer clothing for under $5!  Go during the week, while they are unloading the most recent donations that haven't been picked through.  Good furniture deals.  You can haggle, too.

Beware the as-is yard.  While you can find amazing deals (vintage wool coats for 50 cents), you might want to bring gloves for sifting through the bins.  And watch your kids--this area is one big safety hazard for the little ones.  On three occasions I've found old canisters of prescription pills in the pockets of clothing there--WITH pills still in them!

I'm not reviewing St. Vincent's for what it is, but more for what it isn't. To be sure, it has all the goodies that other writers have mentioned, namely, larger items, books, furniture, and clothing. What I find absent from this thrift are the tiny treasures. All the small items are out on bookshelves  where countless others have passed them many times. You don't really get to be the first one to discover something amazing. Still, St. Vincent's is good at what it does. If you enjoy thrift stores, then you'll love this enormous place.

I've moved away from thrift stores and I'm now on several email lists for estate sales. There, I can still find amazing old photos, slides, letters, fabric, scrap books and other small items to use in an art piece. Send me a message if you want the address. It's easier than searching through all the rubbish sales on Craigslist for a descent estate sale.

Hey you, I'm all for buying a dead woman's treasures especially if she saved all her cute outfits that she wore back when she was doing the shimmy and drinking Sloe Gin with her beau in NY. But you won't be able to do that here without paying triple dripple (?) price for that hot little handbag from the late 20s and it's not even dusted off!

Come here if you feel like getting a hot case of scabies, but hey....
it's for a GOOD CAUSE!

Frankly, I'd rather just give my money directly to the homeless than go there and be afraid to touch things.

I will gladly let all these five stars people keep going there and I will not reveal where all the REAL deals are - hello Grandma!  Delete that shyte!

Yeah, this place is huge and rather hard to find.

A friend of mine purchased a steelcase desk there for like 15dollars then had it sand-blasted for probably 30more and had a desk that you can find on Melrose or Beverly for like 700bucks.

Just like any true thrift store, you really need to hunt and peck, but if you're patient it may be worth it.

Me, i'm sorta out of the thrift store phase. The Modernica Wherehouse sale is more my speed now.

This is indeed a great place for super SUPER cheap goods.  Lots of thrift vintage selection and everything is easy to find.  I will agree that the place is pretty dingy, definitely more so than the average Goodwill or Out of the Closet.

They had some really fantastic deals on outdoor furniture if you're willing to put in some work to refinish, but we passed as there are so many deals on craigslist that are at about the same price point and, you know, not filthy.

I will also say that, even though I know it's Winter, this place was freaking FREEZING - felt like they had the A/C on in the middle of January, so we definitely rushed out as fast as we could.

I freaking love this place.  It's the greatest thrift store ever.  They sell everything, I mean everything...

The vintage furniture area is always a great place to mosey around even if you are not looking for furniture...you'll never know what treasures you'll find for dirt cheap.

Go during the weekdays because parking can fill-up sometimes on the weekends.

Good luck treasure hunting!
-------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------
I was hoping I didn't have to do this, but I guess I have to drop the rating on this place from a 5 to 4.  My last experience here was by far the strangest thing in the world.

Here's my story...

My boyfriend and I went to St. Vincent's in search of a cabinet.  Well, we came across a vintage clothes cabinet with no tags on it.  We asked the first person we saw about the cabinet and here's how it went:

ME:  Excuse me!

THE WOMAN: Yes...

ME:  Do you know the status of this cabinet?  It doesn't have a tag on it.

THE WOMAN (screaming):  No!  You go ask the salesman!  He knows the price!  I'm not sure!

So after that rude conversation I found another person.  He was a lot better.  However, for some odd reason he directed me to the security guard.  So this is how it went with the security guard:

ME:  Hi...do you know if that cabinet over there is available?

SG:  Which one?  Show me...

(We walk over to the cabinet)

SG:  Oh this one!  It's available for purchase.

ME:  Who can give me a price?

SG:  I can...it's $210.

ME:  Sweeett!  I'll take it!

So, I go to the register and pay for the cabinet.  The person that rang me up happened to be the same lady I spoke with first.  She wrote out the sold tag for me and we walked over to the cabinet to put the "sold" tag on it.

And all of a sudden...

THE WOMEN:  (As she is putting the tag on)  Wait, you can't buy this.  You see that woman over there she's been waiting for it all morning.

MY BF:  Uh, we already bought it.

THE WOMEN:  Ok, lets go talk to the boss.

We walk over to the "boss."  Guess what kids...the boss was the security guard...I was totally confused at this point.

The women explains to the security guard that another women was supposed to buy it, but was waiting for a lower price.  She apparently didn't have enough money to pay for it.  The person that quoted her was the actual salesman and he quoted $250, and said he would hold it for her for 30 minutes.  They kept telling us that they would have to give us a refund.  Somehow, we got the real boss lady to come out.  Well, she cleared it up and basically said, "St. Vincent' de Paul doesn't have a hold policy."

Ha...in your face lady I got the cabinet and I got it for $40 cheaper.  Even after this incident this thrift store is awesome as long a you don't have to deal with the staff.

Back in high school when I believed I was a hippie, I used to visit thrift stores and vintage stores of all sorts. I thought I had seen it all... until...

years later (meaning last week), I found this place through my sister's friend who bought a $25 couch there.

I went to buy some children's books.
I didn't do much browsing due to being hung over like a frat boy.

However, I was able to see that they had a huge amount of stuff. Furniture, books, clothes, fabric, all kinds of crap that you don't need, but all of a sudden want because it's so dirt cheap.

My fellow yelpers don't lie when they give this place all reds! I say check it out when you have nothing to do and feel like buying a dresser you imagine yourself sanding down, priming, and painting.

I am in love with this place! Its like someone opened up the skies and heaven crapped out a wonderful thrift store mall. You can get anything there...clothes, shoes, purses, kitchen appliances, electronics, coffee tables, etc...

I have gotten so many clothes here! I also have gotten little things for my apartment. If you like to cruise and dig through for some cheap deals-this is the spot for you!

great place to drop in every once in a while, just to see what they have

sometimes you find a real piece of furniture that you can actually re-finish and it won't fall apart into little bits of particle board.

well that's good.

(good for washer/dryers, bookshelves, desks, tables, side tables)

If you can get past the inch layer of dust on everything there are some priceless items in this place.  I love military style double breasted jackets and navy wool pants and this place has a huge array of them.
Old fashioned picture frames can be found here as well and for half the price an Aaron Bros. would ask.
I also have a tendency to grab up cool bedside dressers, old tables, strange indescribable pieces of furniture and revamp them.
This place has all of that.
It's a little out of the way for me but I'd rather have a large selection then slim pickins right here in my neighborhood.

I'd have to say this thrift store is the best in Los Angeles.  And trust me, I've done my research.

As with any palace of junk, it's hit and miss.  Sometimes you catch St. Vinny on a good day, sometimes on a bad one.  But, it's a great place to go for anything you might need - clothing, shoes, kitchen stuff, furniture, records, books, etc...

If you are looking for furniture, it's best to go during the week or right when it opens on Saturday.  It has been my experience that most of the good things get snatched up early on Saturdays.

Almost everything here is super cheap and the workers will sometimes give you even more of a deal if they like you.

Always my first stop when I need to go "thrifting."

It's one of those places that's impossible to find, but worth the trip.  The parking lot is always crowded, but the selection is huge.  I've bought a lot of furniture there, and just the other day I found a vintage metal steelcase bookcase for the low low price of 20 bucks.  Can't beat that.

oh the once holy grail of thrift stores, why is it that the reason i once loved you is now the reason i have to hate you?

love is a fickle bitch.

so i hesitate to say, for now upon further reflection this makes me kind of sad, but over the summer i frequented this place about once a week. what drew me to keep coming back? the enormous book selection. every time i came home my bookshelves would become fuller and more ripe with literate possibilities then the day before. alas, the good times came to an end my last visit when i found the bookshelves at st vincent, barren. WHERE ARE ALL MY BOOKS!? Where are the Chandlers, the Greens, the Tolstoys and the Julys?

sigh, paying 26 bucks for a no label stained coat is just not going to cut it. sorry St. Vincent De Paul, i think i'm going to have to break up with you.

we had a good run though. thanks for the memories.
