Perhaps the best Tofu Soup EVER!

I order the Pork & Beef Spicy Soup.  TO DIE FOR!!! haha..

    --------
They accept take out "order by phone = save time"
    Or Eat In.
    ---------
I have never ate inside the restaurant, however it does appear that wait times for tables can be a  bit hectic, and portions tend to be smaller, but presented nicer.
I've always ordered take out, I call and order. They have different varieties of soups i.e beef, pork, chicken, mushroom, clam and at different spicy levels - not spicy, mild, spicy, very spicy. The order comes in a Quart container, with Kimchi, Rice, pickles, and a pickled cucumber. The food tastes great, the tofu is firm - there is a good amount of meat.

    The staff is very nice.

Price is pretty good - $9 for a soup.

SBD was above average. I things BCG is at least as good, if not a little better.

Kalbi was good, but I've had better quality meat.

Service is extremely fast and efficient, albeit not friendly.

I like the attitude of the place though. Prices are very reasonable. Will come back.

    Can you say hot damn?

I love this place. Despite the limited menu (Tofu soup and ribs ONLY) I always leave this place happy and full of fatty meat and with kickin' kim chi breath.

Sometimes as a white person I get horrible service, but I don't care because as long as I get the little bowls of kimchi before the meal and the ribs come out piping hot and the shrimp in my soup have little faces, I am happy.

Go with some friends, get a couple order of ribs, a bowl of the seafood tofu soup (not if you have shellfish allergies though) and gorge on the delicious spicy assortment of Korean kimchi things and rice that they bring you.

It's also really fun cracking a raw egg into a boiling hot cast iron bowl of soup.
And it's also fun to cut the ribs with the scissors they bring you. The ribs are vvvery fatty, but damn good.

The parking lot is a P.O.S though, park across the street at the municipal parking to avoid serious frustration.
Also, go on a weeknight because the weekends are INSANE.

Mmmmmm ... seafood tofu! The best Korean Tofu House in my book!

OMG! OMG! Why does this place have to be in New Jersey?

My friend was driving back to NYC after coming home to MD, so my brother and I tagged along as her driving buddies before we headed up to Boston (IE we hitched a ride). Along the way, we got hungry (imagine that), so we decided to get Korean in Fort Lee and boy, did we get the best!

We stopped by So Kong Dong (found it on her Garmin GPS as closest restaurant) and found out the whole menu only offered tofu. Even though we wanted a full-fledge Korean meal, we didn't really mind since we love Seafood Tofu Soup. Though there weren't many entrée options, we were inundated with the bowl size options and level of spiciness. After going back and forth with our server, my brother and I chickened out and got it mild-medium spicy, my friend got the full spicy. Though I ordered a small bowl (my friend and brother ordered the large), I had too much food because the bowl look like a two-quart claypot, and the large looks like a twenty-quart pot (ok, not quite, but it was huge). So, we ended up spending 40 minutes eating linner at 3:30 because the portions were generous and we were busy sweating from the spiciness.

Overall, I thought the flavors were well balanced, I tasted the fishy, fresh seafood broth mixed with the fresh, spicy peppers - hence, it didn't taste very spicy at first, but the spiciness built up. Best of all, the bill for the three of us came out under $20!

Simply the best soondubu (korean tofu stew)..

So Kong Dong never seems to fail me. After not going for 1+ year the soondubu and kalbi are still excellent. They better be because those are the only items you'll find on their menu.

What sets SKD apart from the others is their silky smooth cubed tofu within their soondubu. Most are mushed or crushed and you can barely tell its tofu. In addition, their kalbi is always grilled to perfection without it being dried or charred.

Two complaints that I do have are that their waiters/waitresses seem to always be in a rush and not very attentive and also they dont have many appetizers.

If you are looking for a full korean cuisine then SKD isnt your place but if your looking for great soondubu and kalbi then head to SKD. Be prepared to wait during peak hours since the place is pretty popular but rather small.

After visiting here a couple or so more times and trying other Korean tofu houses, SKD deserves an upgrading to 5 stars. The renovation has given the dining room a clean, bright, modern feel and it is a pleasure to sit here and savor the Soondubu. I like the new crisp red and black uniforms, too. My only wish is that they would offer those Incredible savory Korean pancakes. They would pair so nicely with my Mushroom and Tofu cauldron. But then again, why mess with a great thing? Now So Dong Kong is my favorite soft tofu house. Very nice service, swell digs and great prices. Love it!

Delicious! Fast Service! and great value everytime i visit.   One of my fav go to spot for tofu stew in the NJ/NYC area.  Best had on a cold winter day, or after a ball so hard day snowboarding and coming back in town with your friends.  Over the past year the service (waiter/waitress staff) went from a 2/5 to now a 4/5 to 5/5.  They are pleasantly friendly now and actually listen to what you want, whether its another side dish, or a cup of water.

They are currently undergoing exterior renovation and still open for business which is great.  One thing that they could improve on is their parking lot although, 1. its physically impossible to expand the inlet type parking lot they currently own sandwiched in between 2 buildings and 2. there is a huge parking lot right across the street.  I usually tend to go in the wee hours of 230pm-500pm during the weekends to avoid utter chaos.

Will be back again and hope this place stays around for years to come!

A local classic, and the best soondooboo I've had in the US (as a hemi-Korean, I consider myself a reasonable critic).  Every time I return to the area I make sure to come here for my soondooboo fix.  As I imagine most people reading this review already know, soondooboo is a hot soup with chunks of the softest, silkiest, falling-apart tofu in a red chili pepper spiced broth, which comes to you bubbling in a stone bowl.  It can be made with mushrooms, meat, chicken, or seafood.  You'll get a raw egg, which you can crack to drop the contents into the soup to cook before the soup cools down.  You can add rice to it, or my preferred method is to start by hollowing out a hole in my rice bowl, then spoon some of the soup into it and eat it along with the rice (the small amount of tofu soup cools down more quickly this way) and then eat from directly from the soup bowl after it's cooled down more.  My favorite soondooboo is the seafood version which comes with oysters, clams, and a couple shrimp (heads on, unshelled).  There are varying levels for spice strength (listed at the bottom of the paper menu), but I recommend going for broke and ordering the "very hot" version if you're not a wimp.  I just tried the simply "hot" version today and it was just mildly spicy to my tongue, not nearly enough for me...then again, my tongue nerve endings may be perpetually numb from my never-ending assault of super spicy food on them.

As always with Korean food, you'll also get a series of side dishes including kimchi (spicy pickled cabbage), pickled turnip bits with squid (my favorite), spiced cucumber slices, and bean sprouts.  You're supposed to pick from these side dishes directly with your chopsticks to put in your mouth, or you can add them to your rice.  You can also order bbq shortribs (kalbi) which have the sweet marinade that makes korean bbq so tasty and amazing.  You'll get big chunks of the rib meat along with a pair of scissors, and you can cut the bbq meat into pieces--usually between rib bones--and eat them along with the side dishes (or soup).

After the server scoops rice from a big bowl to put into little bowls, he'll pour barley tea into the remaining rice.  This is actually one of the best parts of the meal.  Use one of your remaining bowls to scoop some of the browned rice bits and barley liquid into your bowl, and then eat it like a soup.  It's indescribably satisfying and nourishing, with a subtle but earthy flavor.

I've visited this place so many times, and the quality of both the soondooboo and kalbi can vary.  The kalbi I tried today was mediocre compared to the spectacular kalbi I've had in the past.  However the soondooboo is always fantastic, and a great representation of Korean cuisine (which I passionately love, as my mother's food).

Piping hot bowl of soft tofu soup, how did you become so popular?

Yep believe the hype. The secret is out. Who would have thought that a soft tofu place can have a line out the door. Not to worry, place your order while your're waiting and once you sit down food comes out right away. Talk about efficiency! My only complaint is that I had to sit there staring at my tofu for 10 min waiting for it to cool down.

Everything was good here. Yes. Everything.

So Tubs and I started our morning here today.  So disappointed yet again!?  Why do i keep on going back here when the service is so horrible?  I told Tubs today that i will not go back ever again, regardless of how the SDB was.

Yes they have great SDB, and the Kalbi is great.  But i refuse to patronize a place where they do not service the customer properly.

They apparently are renovating, the place is brighter and uniforms are red, and there is some change of staff.  Does it have to do with BCD opening up nearby?  Probably.  We did notice smiles for once, and apologies for screwing up our order, which would have never happened before.

The new waiter somehow forgot to put out order in.  We alerted the staff and still had to wait an additional 30 mins for SDB!  Couldn't they have rushed it, while we saw 3 other tables get theirs?  We did get a couple of apologies, but i expected some sort of compensation on our bill, or some more side dishes and water without me asking for it?  Am i asking for too much?

The table right next to us had to order their coke 5 times before they received it as well.

I guess the "renovation" has not reached their service portion yet, or will it ever?

Goodbye So Kong Dong, you have forced me to patronize your competitor.

TOFU SOUP...BOMB.  You could tell a lot of effort was put into the soup.  Unlike BCD tofu, this soup itself is tastier.  Props to the chef.  Ordered a Spicy Tofu soup w/ Seafood.  The right level of spiciness.

Ordered the LA Kalbi.  Very good.  Plus the portions were a lot.  Banchan was great.  The cucumber kimchi was great.  Wish i could have more, but wasn't able to ask for any.

For a Korean restaurant, this place is pretty decently priced.

I'll probably come here more often when i get the chance.

I came here with my dad around 10-15 years ago, before it became so well known.  He visited the golf range in Edgewater often, and would stop by on cold winter days.

We took a friend here once and he seems to be hooked since we saw him there again not soon after. :D and this place is far from home hehe so he must have been! Haha

This is THE BEST SOFT TOFU place I've ever had, and the RIBS are also stellar.  It always hits my spot!!!

My only lament is the fact that it is so crowded nowadays with no place to park, wait line for seats, and that it is cash only ( at least years ago, cc's might be accepted now?) ok that was more than one complaint, but go here!  You won't be sorry.

Anthony Bourdaine went here! So it must be good right? But seriously, it is good. I think the way the place is decorated inside with all the wood furnishings and asian architecture makes this location unique. The food is great also, people sometimes complain about the service, but to me these people just look tired, and I cant blame people for being tired, as long as they're still prompt, and the food is hot the place deserves five stars. The kim chi and all the condiments are really fresh and taste really good.

In terms of the menu, I like the simplicity, its like going to an asian in-and-out, except its with asian food :D. You have your choice of korean bbq short ribs that are 15$ which is a little bit on the pricey side because they are actually easy to cook at home on a bbq grill ( really easy trust me ) , and a choice of several tofu dishes. I personally prefer the kim-chi tofu soup.

Simplicity & Efficiency taken to the next level.  There are literally two things on the menu.. Soup & Kalbi.  Order is taken while you wait.  Once you're seated, the food is here.  Boom & boom and you're done.

Customer service is obviously not a focal point as it's next to non-existent, which is rather rare for a Korean establishment.  The food is good and the price is reasonable, so it's their way of telling you to F'ing take it or leave it.  Damn it, you win.

I was extremely upset after I visited this place. I really wanted great Korean food and this place does have it. What p'ed me off were the nasty, dirty, perverted staff in the restaurant. They were the busboys. They were already staring at me while I was eating but afterwards, while waiting in line for the restroom, there were three of them and they were talking about my behind and what they wanted to do to me in Spanish. Unbeknowst to them since I'm Asian, I happen to speak Spanish. Yea, I cursed them out lovely right back in their language.

Service and smiles are definitely not main points here from the rest of the staff.  Spicy soup and kalbi are fantastic and moderately priced.  I'll never come back though.

Sad too because the food is really good here but this is what happened when you hire tacky, disgusting labor like that.  Either way, I'm not coming back!

REALLY YUMMYYYYY! Tofu Soup that is.

I haven't had this good of tofu soup in a REALLY long time. The only one that comes close are ones in Southern California, but even a lot of them, don't have the savory flavors that exist in the broth from this place. The broth is key here, and So Kong Dong really does a GREAT job at it.

I came here along with Husband and 3 of his work colleagues for the recent Labor Day weekend. We arrived at around 6:15pm on a Friday evening, and it was already pretty busy. We had to wait or about 15 minutes, so it wasn't too bad. I appreciated the fact that you are able to place your order while you wait, so once you get your table, your food is ready to go. They are very efficient with time, and at a small place like this, it's the way to go. If you're looking for a place to shoot the breeze and just lounge around, chat, and eat, then I wouldn't recommend this place for that atmosphere. This place is just simple tofu soup and ribs. Get in and get out type of mindset. Just keep that in mind when you go.

Now, with all the hustle and bustle of the place and quick service set aside, the food is great. The banchan, in my opinion, were lackluster to a lot of other Korean places I've visited. The only one that i enjoyed was the bean sprouts. The kim chi wasn't aged enough, and didn't have enough pickle sour flavor. All the other dishes were bland and boring to me. The galbi had a decent flavor, but they were on the thin side and slightly overcooked. I'd pass on those next time.

Overall, a great evening of cheap, comfort food. The place isn't the cleanest, so make sure you keep your belongings close with you and watch where you sit and step.

With the tofu soups priced at $9 a bowl, and $15 for the galbi ribs, it's definitely an affordable place to have dinner or a late evening snack. Come here for the tofu soup, and leave everything else behind!

I'll definitely be returning to this place next time I'm in the area.

First time here for dinner on Saturday night with my friends while in NYC.  Soooo good we came back Sunday night as well!!!  Their soft tofu chigae was to die for.  We all had different flavors but personally I thought mine (Seafood and Beef) was the best.  It has the best of both worlds, the clams and oysters to add the briny dimension to the broth as well as the beef to give it the meat flavor.  We also had their beef Kalbi, it very tender but was a bit thin and bland in my opinion.  The sides dishes were fantastic.  I love the radish one with thinly sliced squid.

The only reason why this restaurant got a 4 is because the service was lacking.  I get it that they were extremely busy but we had to asked 3 times for our coke and got sour faces all 3 times.

Having said all that... The food is worth all the faces.  I would def. come back whenever I'm in the area.

As much as I love tofu, I've never been a fan of soodubu (maybe it's because I'm not a jjigae type of gal. It seems like this is the go to place for anyone who like soondubu. The fact that this restaurant is still here after many years says a lot as well.

I ordered the mushroom soodubu (mild), and I actually enjoyed my meal. I wish they put more mushrooms but overall was a good meal. They food comes out pretty fast. I'm interested to see what BCD tastes like as they are supposedly So Kong Dong's closest competitor.

The food is okay, ordered their seafood, beef tofu stew last weekend for lunch. Nothing really special. They offered limited selection of kimchi compared to their peers in Ktown. Although customers can choose from "No hot at all" to "Very hot", their "hot" was like nothing.

We were ignored by the staff the whole time and they never thought of refilling our empty cups. This is called BAD SERVICE.

Soup and Ribs.  It is a fine meal.

Make sure you or someone you go with knows how to crack an egg, they give you a egg and mix it in the soup when it comes out.  Mix it well and the soup become creamy looking.  I am sure the abundant Tofu helps with the creamy look as well.  The soup comes in heated clay pot so it is still boiling when you they drop it right in front of you.

I tried both Mushroom Tofu and Kimchee Beef Tofu soups at Medium Hot spice level.  Loaded with flavor.  The soup would not be the same without the egg.  And no reason to make it spicier.

They give you scissors to trim the ribs.  It works well until you accidentally come across a rib bone.  I broke the scissors into two by doing this.

Expect to be rushed a bit when they are busy.  Eat and be on your way.

This place provides the worst service. If you want to be forced to pay when you are not ready, i really recommend this place.
It was one of my favorite restaurants, specially in cold, rainy or snowy days.
There were always a lot of customers and they were always busy.
Waiters ask you to order as soon as you seat and they never come back except when they bring food or check. You will sometimes get a check when you are still eating.
I still tried few times after that but it was always same. I never come back to this place. I went to the one in palisade park instead.
Today i went to BCD in fort lee. The STF was good and side dishes were great compared to sogongdong but LA galbi is better at sogongdong.

I've been here a couple times and the place is always packed...they have a guy standing by their parking lot directing traffic.  We've been lucky enough to find parking in there every time, but some people have to park at the metered lot across the street.

They take your order as you're waiting for your table, so the food gets out pretty quickly.  Last time I went, I've learned I can make my own tofu soup combination, so I ended up getting the beef, oyster, and mushroom tofu soup.  The lady gave me a  "you sure you want that?" look...anywho, the soup came out bubbling hot, with a small (like half a size of jumbo) egg you crack into the soup and let it cook to perfection.   The rice is cooked in individual stone bowls, which leaves a nice crispy layer on the bottom we like to eat.

After we paid, they told us they need to clean the table for the next party...which is understandable since they want faster turnover, but it wasn't like we were sitting there for a long time.  I don't like to be rushed!

My family and I used to come to So Kong Dong after our weekly summer camping trips on the way back home. Occasionally, there would be a wait, but it was never an unbearable amount (15 minutes tops). When there was a line, they would take our order while we waited, which ensured we got our food pretty quickly. We'd usually get seated at one of the spacious booth tables. We also ordered the spiciest (ahjoo maepgae) version of seafood soondooboo and sometimes a serving of kalbi. Each soondooboo comes with a raw egg, which you drop into the soup and let the heat cook the egg. Also, the rice is cooked in a stone pot and then removed. The leftover rice on the bottom is then left in the stone pot and at the end of the meal, the waitress pours hot water into the pot to make "nooroongjee" rice, which you can also eat with the side dishes provided.

Overall, this place always leaves me full and content. The soondooboo is good here. You can order varying degrees of spiciness, which is really nice. Their kalbi is okay (nothing compared to bbq restaurants, but you can't really go that wrong with kalbi).

I'd definitely recommend this place for some good soondooboo.

I finally visited this place with my friends. Pretty disappointed. Not sure why so many people recommend it. Tofu is good, but others stuff from rice to services are just so so. We never go again.

There are literally two things in the menu: soft tofu soup, which of course comes in different variations and kalbi bbq (short ribs)

I really love the setup it looks like an old school korean home. I love this place, because not only they serve good authentic korean food but it has a real homey feel to it--korean way!

I am so glad my friends took me here especially when the place was told to me about 5 years ago! Phew, I cannot imagine my NY Trip without it!

I dunno.  I was expecting more- especially after reading all the reviews about this place.

The Soon Tofu was OK.  I wished we had gotten it spicier.  The short ribs were a little greasy for me.

Excellent LA galbi, excellent sundubujjigae.  Quaint atmosphere, polite staff.  Close to the GW bridge.  Not the best in the area, but very very good.

I was first introduced to sundubu here many years ago. and it is still the best.  They fast but dont rush you.  And there soup just taste better then other places.  There is often a wait but its well worth it.
Right when you sit down at the table, they bring you a big bowl of hot rice and scoop it out into individual cups and then pour barley tea into the rice bowl with leftover rice, for you to eat as you please.
The prices are good.  9 dollars for an order.  seafood... beef.. seafood and beef.  hot, extra hot.. no spice.. pork.. all the combinations are 9 dollars.
The kimchi is good and the pickled kimchi cucumbers are awesome.

I have yet to NOT burn my mouth on sudubu but i try so dam hard not to every time.

While driving back to NYC from a weekend of camping my friends and I decided to check out some Korean food in Fort Lee. I am so disappointed in yelp for having so many great reviews of this place. Save your time and money and go to BCD.

I should have known not to stay when most of the customers were speaking Chinese and the servers clearly were Chinese and not Korean. But I stayed because of the great reviews and the good prices.

There was a long line but we were seated fairly quickly--Mainly because food was taken away from a table before they finished their meal. The table was wiped, cups of water taken away, and they were still sitting there as new place mats & utensils were put at each setting.

The "medium spicy" tofu soup was not spicy and just salty without much flavor. If you are Korean or accustomed to spicy foods, be sure to order yours "very spicy."

They bring rice out in stone pots making you think its been cooked in the pot and you will have "Nooroongee bahp" after your meal. (A palate cleansing tea created from rice that has become crispy and brown against a stone pot) Unfortunately they scoop pre-cooked rice into a semi-hot stone pot which doesn't allow the rice to brown around the edges properly. They pour hot tea into the bowl faking the whole experience. And you end up with rice that is sitting in water.

The BBQ ribs were very good. They don't have anything on the menu except tofu soup and BBQ ribs so why go to a tofu house to eat the BBQ ribs?

All I can say is.. don't waste your time.

Even though my friend said it used to be much better, I still think they make good tofu soup and delish BBQ ribs. I will definitely go back.

The food here was decent and decently priced, but it was literally the rudest service I've ever experienced. Maybe it is better if you are Korean, because we were the only white people in there. We called ahead days ago for a reservation, but they said they could not seat our party all together. My water glass was empty before the main course was even brought out, but they never filled it again. My friend had to ask 3 times for a Coca Cola, and by the time they brought it, he had finished his meal.

Go for the food if you are Korean and don't mind bringing your own beverage. And don't bother making a reservation, because they won't save you a table.
