When people compliment me on my jewelry and I tell them it's from So-Good (as it usually is), they always ask, "What is that?" And I tell them it's like Claire's for adults. There are 2 So-Good Jewelry stores in Boston, where I moved from recently. When I moved to New York I lamented a little that I would no longer have ready access to cheapish, but decently made costume jewelry. I nearly squealed with delight when I saw this place on Broadway. I immediately entered the store and was greeted by the usual overwhelming sight of every color and shape of earring, necklace, bracelet, hair clip, etc. adorning the shelves and walls. It's best to come here with a mission, such as, "I need a chunky red beaded bracelet to go with x outfit." You will find what you need. If you come in just browsing- you will either a) walk out with nothing, or b) walk out with everything.
Cons: Rachel in the review below is right- it's really hot in there- including the ones in Boston. And they watch you like a hawk, so much so that you feel like you are stealing even when you're just trying on a ring.
Walking into So Good is setting foot into the ballroom at Chateau Versailles in France, or maybe the scene in Return To Oz where Fairuza Balk finally reaches the Emerald City and it's a scintillating spectacle of diamonds, glitter and other jewels.
So Good is SO bright. And so sparkly. Like, you've never seen so much bling. The entire place is teeming with faux-diamond encrusted tiaras, necklaces, earrings and bangles. Pretty much any piece of flashy jewellery you hope to find is somewhere along these walls. It's almost damaging to the retina - that's how bright the place is. Completely overwhelming and it takes a while for your eyes to adjust.
I imagine if you took the time to really browse and dig through the thousands of items you could find something worthwhile here!
It's funny to find a store that is pretty interesting and fairly affordable North of Canal Street. Really the place is only two blocks away. Upon first glance it seemed like the place would be expensive and not worth going into. There were so many people in the store that you had to see what the fuss was about. The walls are covered in pink ruffles and the floor is faux zebra print carpet. They try to make the place look classy and somewhat succeed. The decor matches the ambiance. Ladies if you are looking for that one piece to tie your outfit together then this is the place to go! They have a plethora(Yea) of jewelry that is really affordable. For instance I purchased bangle sets that were 7 dollars. Not no cheap glitter is falling off kind of sets but really beautiful pieces for 7 dollars! I couldn't stop there I bought too many bangles sets to count that set me back about 50 dollars. I live in DC and these items would cost way more here! They have all necklaces to fit whatever style you desire even belts and hats. The sales associates were really nice and they give you a jewelery box to place your selections in. The place is well maintained and it is clean and not cluttered. Easy to find what you are looking for. There are some pieces that are rather pricey and a bit gaudy for my tastes. It is a very good deal and the quality is much better than trying to haggle for the same stuff on Canal Street.
If you're addicted to cheap, adorable bling, this is the place for you. I will be back for that rhinestone kitty brooch with the swinging tail. They also have an okay selection of hair accessories, and a small selection of "higher end" costume jewelry. Just make sure you don't get blinded by the mass of sparkles on your shopping tray, those little trinkets really start to add up after about 30 minutes of perusing the aisles. Thank God they accept credit card.
I confess that this is a stop on every trip to New York. I plan at least an hour because they have so much inventory. It's a fine place for the budget minded, and a place to find items that get noticed by others. An expensive look can be created by shopping here. Just be aware that the quality is hit and miss. Sometimes it's better than the department stores and sometimes it's on the same level as a dime store. I've had both. I suggest attention to this. Only one item of mine broke after repeat wear so I think this is a great place for low cost accessories.
This place is very overwhelming when you first walk in. Tons of cheap, costume jewelry. But...I came here on a mission, I was looking for a banana barrette. What, you ask is a banana barrette? I really can't describe it, so please google it. LOL. In any case, I looked at many places and couldn't find it, that is, until I visited here. Although they only had one style of the banana barrette, I wasn't complaining since I couldn't find it anywhere else. I was a happy camper, since this place ended my month long search. Thank you So Good, I am forever indebted to you ;-)
This is the reason why I intend on getting my ears pierced this summer! This store was introduced to me by my cousins who have a huge assortment of jewelry (earrings, necklaces, hair clips) from this store. When I was in search of a necklace that matched a dress I had to wear as a bridesmaid (and matched my neck~), this was where I went to find it, and I did! Along with another sterling silver ring to wear on a daily basis.
If you intend on shopping here, set time aside for browsing. It'll take a while as it's kind of overwhelming to see all these shiny things catching your eye. It took a while to find the bridesmaid necklace because there's such a large assortment.
The prices are reasonable especially if it's for something you can't find anywhere else. The only thing I don't like about the store is that there are men standing all around the aisles watching you like hawks. They require you to hold a wooden box while shopping so that you don't actually hold the jewelry in your hand. I guess they've had many shoplifters or attempted shoplifters there and they're just taking precaution.
Yes, the blaring opera music and the glittery racks of trashy-looking pieces can be off-putting and overwhelming. HOWEVER, if you are patient, you can find many great pieces of jewelry here for can't-be-beat prices. With everything from earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, and headbands in every color, style, and shape imaginable, you're pretty much guaranteed to walk out of here with SOMETHING. A great place to purchase some last-minute jewelry or to buy gifts!
I remember my first trip to So Good as being really overwhelming: "so many shiny things to look at! can't decide where to look first! the music is so loud! gee, what's that over there?!"
I've since been back a few times but was sorely disappointed- the first trips were rewarded with some cute and funky/classic finds, but subsequent trips have been kind of a let down- the place just seemed crowded, loud, and most of the jewelry really really cheap.
I still make a point to swing by when I'm in the 'hood shopping, but the trips are generally just a spin around...though I have to bring visitors here when they're in town (it's always cool to see their initial reactions), and it's close to awesome shopping and the always-requested-by-visiting-friends mecca of knockoff bags known as canal.
so i thought to myself, "maybe i could window shop for 15 minutes in Soho until i go into work..." (does that EVER happen? NO!!!!)
i walked into So Good thinking i wouldn't find anything interesting that day- but i was wrong.... so wrong. everything i saw, i had to touch, examine, try on, and contemplate putting it back. i was torn between the skulls with rhinestones necklaces, the big gem-rings, jade colored bracelets, etc. i immediately called my work and told them i might be late. (i'm horrible, i know.)
there's everything from cheesy plastic jewelry to a classy austrian crystal necklaces that are tasteful enough for a cocktail party.
I love this place! Don't let the noise and the cheap jewelry put you off, chances are you'll find something you like here, if you are a fan of costume jewelry, and I certain am! Check out their rings in particular: there are these pavé set ones in different jewel tones that are such dazzlers they are sure to turn heads. Serious bling! Alongside a lot of dreck there are lovely and delicate earrings and necklaces with Swarovski crystals. Prices are sharply higher than in the past, but this is still a GREAT place for Christmas shopping and browsing. Go and have fun!
i really like this place, and my girlfriends always ask me to take them there. it has its drawbacks, but overall its a great place.
its located amidst some of my favorite shopping in the city (bloomies soho, anthropologie, scoop, ricky's, pearl river mart... i could go on and on) which makes it convenient, but also pretty crowded. the place is huge, it has every color and style of every earring, bracelet, ring, necklace and anything else you can think of. if you're looking for a specific color for a matchymatchy kind of outfit, its definitely the right place. you can walk around the store multiple times and see something new every lap. it's great for varieties sake, but thats why i subtracted a star - it also makes it really hard to find stuff. it also gets really really hot in there, and after a while the music always starts to piss me off.
definitely head there first when you're looking for inexpensive jewelry, you'll always leave with something.
Mass produced jewelry for as cheap as you'll find it without going to a flea market. I am a huge fan of cheap jewelry, and I love a lot of So Good's stuff, but I have to say that 80% of what they have just turns me off. Maybe it just seems too mass-produced, or maybe I just feel like it looks cheap because there's so much fake pewter and gold. The store is pretty big for an all-jewelry place, and the price is certainly right, but I tend to go here only to buy plastic jewelry. Not that this is bad - my plastics are some of my favorite pieces. But for earrings and necklaces, I find fairs, festivals, sample sales, and street vendors (bargain hard!) have stuff that's either of much higher quality or prettier for about the same price as So Good. It may not be as convenient, but a hunter's gotta do her best to stalk her own prey, no?
The first time I went to So Good - 5 years ago - I was overwhelmed. They have tons of cheap jewelry, $20 or so, that was cute/fun/trendy. But the past couple of years I have been disappointed. Their selection has gone down and it's not as fun as it used to be. Plus the store is really hot!
This place is a dangerous place...so many varieties of dangling earrings, necklaces, clips, and braclets at reasonable prices...It's not cheap when you buy like 15 items!
BLAH. This store looks kind of tacky because everything is PINK, but the fake jewelry is actually very affordable and tasteful. And they have A HUGE variety of bracelets, rings, earrings, anklets, etc. It's just the store can be blinding and dizzying. Wish they'd cut down on the bling factor.
