If the City would throw a bit of $ their way, maybe they could have an Herb Garden that actually has Italian Parsley growing where the sign reads Italian Parsley instead of Gigantic Flourishing Swarms of Mint overtaking everything.

If you haven't check out Snug Harbor because you live in Williamsburg and the thought of walking and busing around Staten Island makes your V-neck  form a scoop neck, STOP IT NOW!

This is a great place to spend a few hours.  There are many botanical gardens and passive open spaces and it's not crowded.

My reduced star is due to my initial beef...lack of funding creates lack of upkeep...creates unusable gardens.  The herb garden is just the start.  There's another garden that has a converted old house as a 9/11 museum.  It's never open.  The garden around it is overgrown and under-maintained...the trickling natural stream and fountain is drained.

These things are sad.

The Chinese Scholars Garden is worth the 5 dollar admission.

Just don't get discouraged when you walk through the magical door and see nothing but boring paths and trees....you have to walk a bit more to arrive at the actual structure and facility.  Once you arrive, it's a very intricate garden.

Wu-Tang used to frequent the Scholars garden...didn't know that did ya?

Another lovely day trip! The gardens are beautiful and fun to leisurely stroll in. I especially enjoyed the Chinese scholars garden. It's very tranquil and conducive to relaxing. The galleries are also worth checking out. The history of snug harbor is fascinating (it used to be a retirement home for sailors.) Snug harbor combined with riding the Staten Island ferry makes for a fun and cheap day.

My friend got married at snug harbor.  Her ceremony was in the Chinese Garden and had the reception in the Great hall.  This is Staten Islands little secret.  The place is beautiful.  They gardens are impressive and so are the historic buildings.  She was really happy about everything.  She raves about the food and service.  Her photographer featured the wedding on their blog  http://funicostudios.c...

You know that scene where Dave Chappelle attempted to take a girl out with $10 in his pocket in Half Baked? Well, he should have taken her here because this romantic journey costs you nothing.

Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Park is home to many picturesque landmarks, including the New York Chinese Scholar's Garden. There are mini castles, rose gardens, ponds, walking trails, and a ton of benches. Perfect for a summer late afternoon stroll or photo session for you shutterbugs.

It's totally easy to get to. Just take one of those ORANGE GIANTS, aka Staten Island Ferry (Free) Then hope on the s40 bus (well, free if you already have an unlimited metrocard). You'll get there after that 10 minute bus ride.

A great reason to go to take the Staten Island ferry AND actually go to Staten Island.

The Snug Harbor Cultural Center is truly a gem in the borough of Staten Island.

Faffy L. did a great job explaining the extensive grounds.  The original buildings which comprise the cultural center are mostly under much needed renovation.  The main visitor's center is really a fantastic building, and usually has some small exhibits on show.

There are also two restaurants on the grounds: Melville's and Cafe Botanica.  The first is open M-F and the latter Tu-Su.  The cafe seems to be a great place to take in brunch, which I hope to do sometime in the near future..

As a side note, there are fees for entry to the Chinese Scholar's Garden as well as the maze to find the Secret Garden.  However, there's plenty to enjoy on the rest of the grounds, with or without the family!

One of the most gorgeous spots in Staten Island. I always try to come a few times a year when the weather is warm. When you walk in you see beautiful flowers, a greenhouse full of exotic plants and flowers, a cobblestone path, mini gardens on the side and this really neat pond where the ducks swim around all day. Walk further down past the art school and children museum and you'll see the maze (which you have to pay $5 to get in, although sometimes it's free) and walk toward the Healing Gardens, created after 9/11. Seriously stand still when you're there and you will feel an incredible buzz go through your body. Lots of events happenings during the summer and a great place to take your kids during the summer or to walk around when on a date.

didn't expect to find this on staten island.  really cool green house, labyrinth and historic buildings.  great stuff inside and it's free/cheap.  if you come here from manhattan on the ferry, take a cab instead of bussing.

This place was utopia heaven for me. It was surreal coming from Manhattan just to wander around and have a field trip during college. Its like its own little village: there's a school-ish building with kids running around learning whatever they're learning. There's the cute restaurant. there's the chinese garden. There's grass. And places to sit and have a picnic. And stuff. Its just a wonderful place to spend the day. Although it was somewhat nice, I was heckled by some ghetto guys walking back to the ferry. There were some windows that were broken in the buildings. They kept yelling obscenities at me and told me to get out of their neighborhood. I, uh, walked a little faster.
