This hotel is one of the sexiest hotels I've ever been to. Even the lighting at the entrance is crazy beautiful.

You can only access the elevator with your room key, which I think all hotels should do...so you don't get crazies like the CL killer.

The bathroom doors (or walls) are matte translucent. Incredibly sexy: especially if the room is dark and just the lights in the bathroom are lit...you're able to see a sexy silhouette. Makes me want to get into interior design even more.

Oh, and the shower products they provide are by Kiehl's! Hotttttt. Love the grapefruit scented lotion. You know damn well, I took all of them home. Don't judge me.

I stayed here on business.  My company handles all of our travel arrangements.  I usually stay at the Soho Grand, but it was booked.  I wish it wasn't.

While the Smyth is lovely, clean and modern - it's lacking in the details.  My room faced the airway between buildings - which wasn't that big of a deal and I could get over that.

I immediately cranked the AC and went out for dinner and walk.

When I came back almost 3 hours later, the temp showed it was only one degree cooler.  It's still unbearably hot as I write this right now.

I agree with the other reviewers that while the shower/bathroom looks amazing, water gets everywhere and there is no fan for the steam to escape other than into the room...which is already boiling.

There is one hook in the bathroom for a towel or robe, but what if you want to hang your wet robe and towel in the bathroom at the same time???

Comfy bed, but no top sheet so you're either too cold or too hot under the heavy duvet.

I called the front desk about the AC situation and they said they would send someone up....no one has appeared yet.

Decor is nice, but I want to be able to sleep and function while I'm away and working.  Wouldn't come back and will recommend to our travel dept not to book anyone here again.

When I told my NYers friends I was staying here, everyone got really excited and told me about the Kardashians and gushed about how nice the hotel had to be.

Well, the décor is great. And the location is swell, too, gotta love TriBeCa. Love the Kiehl's body products too.

Otherwise, I was underwhelmed, to say the least. I got a room on the 7th floor. The room was an OK size, but there was no view/sunlight at all, except of the building shaft. Worse, they shut off the A/C after a certain date, and the room was broiling hot (could not get it below 78° using the HVAC alone) unless I opened the windows--but that meant the people across the shaft could totally see into my room and the street noise came in while trying to sleep. The pillows were lumpy and uncomfortable and there was no top sheet, so it was sleeping under the duvet in the oppressive heat or kicking it all off. The bathroom had only two tiny "nubbins" to hang towels on, no robe at all. No iron in the room--had to call the front desk. They got my name wrong on the reservation which meant it took 30 minutes to get connected to the WiFi (for $15/day, natch.) And the elevator doesn't read the keycards very well, making it a mad dash to swipe your card and select your floor.

Housekeeping and guest services were overbearing yet cold and unfriendly at the same time. I've never had people knock on my door so many times during my stay. If I need something, I'll call, K?

Upon arriving, the front desk staff gave an icy welcome.  Throughout the stay, they never said "hello", "good morning" or "good evening".  Housekeeping provided turn down 2 out of 5 nights and changed our dirty glasses as often.  I think the Smyth rides the Fame Train and doesn't feel that authentic serivce is requried.

    Lovely bedding and Kiehls, however.

I usually stay at the London and will go back there next time.  Their service is tops for the price and the front desk is always welcoming.

This review has me waffling a bit.  I am usually a fan, or I am not.  I am going to give them three stars because in all my experience here for a week was better than it was bad.  I will break it down here:

To begin, everyone warned me that this was the place that the Kardashians stayed during their filming in NYC.  Since I was staying for over 8 days I figured this is good- the rooms they had on the show were phenominal!

I waited for the single elevator to bring me slowly to the sixth floor where I opened the door to a palacial.. box.  Yes, I know TV makes everything bigger but this was kind of laughable (but standard NYC small I suppose).  Usually when there is a lack of size this is made up with efficiency, not so here.  There are no hooks beyond the one stub on the shower glass for a robe, and no place to even hang a hand towel.  This may seem petty but believe me, these little things go a long way if the trip is longer than two days.  The shower was pretty but the ultra modern shower without a door is annoying because of wet floors.  The lack of ventilation is also not prudent unless you are completely alone and can leave the bathroom door open during shower-business time.

The other item of interest I heard was that this was one of the newer hotels in the city.  There was a certain shabbyness that accompanied the flooring- it lacked the new feeling I was hoping for but its hard to put my finger on exactly why.  For the price, it was not expected.

The no top-sheet thing freaks me out a little.  If you get too hot there are no choices other than to kick up the AC, which kind of sucks for a girl.  Unless they are washing the comforter covers all the time, this just seems like a basic no-no.

The bar and restaurant:  Plein Sud is the bar, and if you are smart you will just keep walking to the right and seat yourself in the second side-bar where its much quieter and the bartender is delightful.  Its less of a scene, but the atmosphere is a bit Vegas-private-lounge-ish.  You can sit on comfy couches behind heavy satin drapes and actually have a conversation in comfort.  The wine selection and food is amazing-- they have a burger with truffle AND bacon if you want it.  I do not even need to mention any other item on the menu because this did it for me.  Everything else is good too.  The bartender that is usually there reminds me of that curly headed brown haired kid from The OC; I highly recommend him too.  He does his best to annunciate the French wines with the correct accent, which is a delight.

Back to the room situation:  Since the box I had was getting smaller, or I was getting larger, I decided to upgrade.  For just $40 more I got the same size room, smaller clothing storage, but a better view of a side street, a king size bed (still no top sheet), and a bit of hallway.  They do give you a bigger console to put clothes in, but half of it was taken up by the mini-fridge.

In my last two days here I had bug bites all down my legs.  I am not going to cause a frenzy here and say they were bedbugs, but it was suspicious none the less.  It is New York and I should have ripped up the single sheet and checked closely the first day I arrived.  I think you can see those buggers, but by this time I just wanted out and to know for sure would have put me in a tailspin.

Less points for the ladies at the front desk- they do not seem thrilled to help and I usually just expect them to fake it.  I just needed a UPS pick up and after staying a week it would have been nice for them to offer to just call it in for me.  Other than this, all the doormen and staff were great.  I wanted to bring home some Keihls for my husband so I left a note for the maid and she left me a few bottles (for this I tipped, of course).  Points back for that.

Lastly- the gym is great.  Its not huge but it has everything including mats and Pilates circles.  If its not crowded you can get in a decent work out.  There are weights and newer treadmills.  I appreciate not sounding like a hamster on a wheel.

Advice:  If you are not dead set on a trendy hotel that must be in the center of Tribeca, I recommend Club Quarters World Trade Center.  For my next trip I had to stay two weeks and this was kind of a breath of fresh air after staying at the Smyth.  It was super new, efficient when it came to space, offered free water (they have dispensers and bottles everywhere), a great gym, and you can grab a free coffee or cappuccino every morning.  Free wi-fi also goes a long way, which is another complaint I had about the Smyth.

Is it "Smyth" like the English would say, or "Smith" like us Americans say it? No one knows-- all my NYC friends said it the English way and the staff seemed to waffle.  I just say it fast so no one notices.

Need trendy and central to Tribeca? Go here but don't stay too long.

I couldn't give 5 stars because they didn't give me the Kim Kardasian Suite...but this spot is what I call very SWANKY.  Right in Tribeca, great access to. Midtown and Lower Manhattan.  Lobby area and restaurant are cool hang out spots too if you're with some friends or whatever.

I love the Thompson Hotel Group in NYC.  They're a family of boutique hotels that offer you more for less.

I have seen hotel rooms for $500.00 a night in NYC that look like shoe box roach motel!.  Thompsons always give you a reasonably low rate and offers you a little more than you expected.  Thank you.

I would recommend Smyth for your budget minded business traveler, or couple, who doesn't mind being away from Midtown.  Why compromise space, amenities, and service because you are in NYC?

I loved the floor to ceiling windows overlooking Tribeca!  If this is your first time to NYC, you may want to stay in Midtown near time square, but the REAL NYC is downtown.  Short walk to Soho for all you fashionistas andd just a short stroll to Battery Park along the waterfront!

    Enjoy your stay!

This was the first time I've ever stayed at one of the Thompson Group's hotels, and I was VERY impressed with the entire experience...

We had been staying at the Waldorf Towers, but wanted to stay a few extra nights in Manhattan (which the hotel couldn't accommodate). After briefly checking online, I stumbled across the Smyth and decided to give it a shot because of the reviews, pictures and the value. The neighborhood is also phenomenal, much different than the sleepy Midtown East area...

Check-in couldn't have been any more efficient, and the room was a decent size for two people (which I would call max capacity). The Tribeca area is great for everyone, close to tons of restaurants and bars. Subway is about 1/2 block away, same with a Starbucks and a convenience store.

The only thing that I wasn't crazy about was the privacy in the bathroom. The shower shares a frosted glass wall with the bedroom, which could be awkward depending on who was with you (probably not good for families, etc).

I'd stay here again, and suggest you do too...

When my friends told me that we're staying at Smyth, I asked, "Smyth as in S-M-I-T-H?" "No, with a 'Y'". Now, immediately Smyth with a "y" sounds cool. First time at Smyth but hopefully not the last time. My friend got the Hotel Tonight app on her iPod touch so we were able to get a sweet deal for the night.

Definitely a fan of its very modern, trendy, chic decor... cool and solid colors was the theme of this place. The room came with all the normal hotel commodities, but was lacking a full-length mirror (unless it was just our room that was missing the mirror). However, it did have Kiehl's shampoo, conditioner, and soap, which I appreciated. Another plus of this place is that it's conveniently located right next to the subway.. you literally walk out the door and can walk down into the subway!

Will have to come back and try Plein Sud for breakfast.

The bed had  the roughest sheets I ever slept in.  I thought  I was going to wake up with splinters.  The location is good - Tribeca and near the subway.    The walls seemed very flimsy.    It was clean, but creepy.

The restaurant, Plein Sud, has good food.

You get a lot of bang for your buck here. Booked on hotwire and was pleasantly surprised to end up in a boutique. Location is good and the hotel is clean and modern. I think it tries just a little too hard to be hip, but whatever.

I upgraded my room for $40 and got a king bed and a little more space. Marble bathrooms are nice. My only complaint is that there's no door on the toilet...a little awkie. The frosted shower wall was a nice touch, but not if I was sharing a room with, say, my mom.

People are also right about the thin walls.

Overall, great value for the price, and I'll definitely be back for my next visit.

    The Good:
      Cool decor
Let us check in early and check out late--held our luggage
      Great bartender
Groovy toy robots and cars on display
      Near subway
      Great restaurants nearby
      Kiels shampoo and conditioner
      Helpful staff
Comfortable, cozy bed (but no top sheet!)
      Good honor bar selection

    The Bad
Where is the FAN in the bathroom?
The only grooming products they had were shampoo, conditioner      and soap
A towel bar or a hook would be nice--took the minimalism too far...to  the point of impracticability. Never sacrifice function for form
I agree with other reviewers--too noisy
Housekeeping WAY too slow to bring towels--they only put one towel and one robe in the room, so I called for more. We waited, and waited...and waited to take a shower. Finally I called again and got some service.
      They never restocked the bar
Twice in three days our room keys stopped working
A little too dark, almost creepy in the hallways
NO TOP SHEET. Is this some cool new trend? It was hot, so we turned on the A/C. We were too hot with the comforter, but when we folded it back the air from the A/C blew directly on us and it was too breezy and too cold. Isn't that why they invented top-sheets?
The temperature issue kept me from getting a good night's sleep
No coffee--had to go to Starbucks across the street--they were slow and got just about everyone's order wrong.

This is a Really Wonderful place to stay. The staff was very nice some of the most attentive folks in the city! The bathroom is  very well appointment with one exception - there are NO hooks or towel bars making it difficult to manage wet towels, etc.
We opted for a room with a balcony - so much of our "room" was an amazing step up balcony looking down West Broadstreet. Since this is your living space it could use a small table or something to set your stuff on. The room decor is clean and sleek, very attractive. But there is no place to put your bags. If the weather is not good it's pretty tight.
My whole family stayed here, they did not have a balconies and had much larger rooms, one had an absolutely amazing suite with plenty of space - like you could live there!!  The management could easily create a few fixes for the storage issues in our balcony room just by having two of their staff stay in those rooms, each with a reasonable sized suitcase.
I'd for sure stay here again.  The restaurant was yummy. Downstairs bar seemed to have better drinks then the upstairs one.

When coming back to NY to visit friends, of course I love being able to crash at their place, but occasionally, I like staying in a hotel. So when Es and I were coming up, I looked for a reasonably priced, trendy hotel in a good location and came across the Smyth. For $135 during the week, I got a room with a king bed. This room is SUPER NICE.

The best part about the room is the bathroom. I love how the frosted glass wall separates the bedroom from the shower.

    *Note to those staying here*

If you don't want your friend to see you take a shower, because you can definitely see the silhouette of anyone in the shower, the lights in the bathroom dim. So turn off the light in the shower room and the toilet room and just dim the lights in the middle.

The room was well worth the money and the hotel is right in front of the 1,2,3 train. I'd definitely stay here again. And when I'm rich, I'm going to buy one of the condos at the top of the hotel. Oh yes I am...

I stay at the Smyth every time I am in NY. The hotel is nice, the rooms are great (for NY) relative to price, and the staff is friendly and courteous. I love the Tribeca neighborhood, which is short cab ride away from most places in the city. The restaurant in the hotel is delicious with the head chef (Ed) being a recent finalist on Bravo's Top Chef. And it also seems to be a popular choice for celebrities, as I have seen a new one staying in the hotel each visit.

The only knock I have on the hotel is that their in-room entertainment is lacking (no movies, and the channels are on a very confusing number system), although the tv's are a great size. I may just be picky. Speaking of being picky, I would love it if they started using Tempur-Pedic beds in some of the rooms. I know my L-4, L-5 would appreciate it.

Overall, I highly recommend the Smyth.

I hesitate to review hotels because so much of the experience can be determined by the consistency of the maid and hotel service, the location and quality of your room, and other randomness. That said, I have been staying in the newest addition to the Thompson hotels in most of my NYC stays for the past 4 months. Having stayed at the Smyth now close for a dozen or so nights, I can honestly say that each and every stay there was a great experience.

I am usually upgraded to a larger room or studio, even though the rate is seldom over $180. Second, everything from the soft, crisp linens to the shower setup with high rain head and even pressure pleases me. I am a very picky hotel guest, particularly since I spend about half of my working days in them. Other Thompson hotels have been somewhat inconsistent with cleanliness and service at times, but the Smyth has yet to falter.

I give this hotel 5 stars in the sense not that it is a 5-star hotel (In that sense, though, it probably comes close to a 4-star hotel), but rather because it is an incredible deal for what you get. For drivers, it is also great because on weekends and evenings, there is plenty of free on-street parking (usually steps from the door).

For a more trendy, party crowd, I would recommend 60 Thompson. The Smyth, however, is just the place for a business traveler who isn't looking to stay at another Marriott, Doubletree, or Westin.

Loved the Smyth when I stayed here a year ago and they had just opened.  The location was great - it was a quick walk over to the financial district and blocks from great places in Tribeca.

Service was fantastic and we got a great deal as they were just opening.  Unlike many reviews I noted how quiet the hotel was!  You couldn't even hear the elevators opening if you were in the lobby.  Maybe it was my room or the fact they weren't fully occupied, but the _lack_ of noise was noteworthy and I commented on it to the manager.

Only downstroke was that AT&T reception sucked in the west and north facing rooms.  Also, charging for Internet these days seems odd.

I tried staying here again, but ended up at a sister hotel - the Gild Hall.
I'm a solid 2 for 2 with Thompson Hotels.  Booked on http://quickbook.com, btw.

Having been to NYC many times over the years for business and pleasure, I'd become accustomed to shoebox sized rooms with barely enough space to breathe!  Compadres, I'm not a little guy (I stand 6'1" tall).  The Smyth was a breath of fresh air.  I didn't feel cramped for space at all.  FYI - it's part of the Thompson group of hotels.

I was here a few weeks ago.  Located in the heart of TriBeCa, it's perfectly situated with many options (food, shopping, subway, etc.) within walking distance of the hotel.

I was stoked to get upgraded to a King Deluxe Sweet.  The bed was gi-normous and SUPER comfortable (oh, I am a HUGE fan of the firm mattress, thanks).  My room faced West Broadway.  Unlike other reviews I've read, I didn't experience loud neighbors or extraneous noise (from inside or outside).  The bathroom was plenty spacious (relatively speaking) and the toiletries provided (Kiehl's) were a nice touch.

The service was fantastic.  Everyone was really friendly and helpful.

I would DEFINITELY stay at this place again.  The price was reasonable.  The space was clean, comfortable and I liked the decor.

Big fan - look forward to getting back to the city soon to check this spot out again.

    Safe travels to you!

I spent a week here, and their best asset is definitely the service.  From the very second I arrived the service was incredible.  Someone met me as I opened the door of my cab, helped me with my bags the second I got out.  Their were absolutely no problems with any of the requests I had, though honestly I was a pretty low-key customer (I really only requested wake-up calls).

Their gym is really cool.  Brand new equipment, plenty of space but doesn't feel huge; and best of all, it has an individual television for each treadmill.  Awesome!

Ok, now onto the problems.  The biggest of course is the price.  It shouldn't cost a large fraction of my monthly rent to stay in a hotel for a single night.  That's just crazy.  What's worse, is that on top of the price, they charge for internet.  $10 for every single day, without even a weekly discount if you're staying longer.  Now, they do this because they know lots of people doing business stay there, and that they'll just expense the extra $10, but some of us aren't their on business and some businesses are starting to tighten their belts.  Also, I think it simply looks tacky to charge for something that most motels provide for free...

The room is a very unique and modern look.  The bathroom is a cool design, but since the shower doesn't have a door, it gets pretty cold in their when you shower.

In planning for my most recent trip, I needed to find a hotel that would fit the following criterion:

    - Easy access to public transport and PATH trains
    - Affordability

I narrowed my choices to Lower Manhattan to give me easy access to both Brooklyn and Jersey.  After a spin of the http://yelp.com wheel I landed upon Smyth.  It met both of my requirements, and looked a LONG ways better than the Holiday Inn and Comfort Inn on the East Side.  And in terms of affordability, you're getting way more for your money here than you would at either of those fine establishments.

Smyth served as a great home base for me.  There was a stop for the 1, 2 and 3 train right outside the hotel, and all other subway trains and the PATH were a quick 5 minute jaunt away.  I did not have to deal with any of the touristy nonsense when I stepped out the door as I would have at some tourist hotel in Midtown and the staff kept to the background appearing whenever you needed them.

The room itself was way more than I expected.  I didn't have a view and if you happen to have T-Mobile you will probably not have reception if you get a Queen room, but if you're traveling to New York and you're spending all your time in the hotel room, you're obviously there for the wrong reasons.

Cute decor - the paintings hang all over the lounge reminds me of my friend's artwork.

The walls are padded with brown striped fabric - the whole area has a loungy - chill vibe.  I would come back here if I was looking for a chill night.

I don't remember any music playing but overall a great place to drink.

I got the Marie Rose - very yummy!

Noise.  Crazy amounts of noise due to poor construction of this hotel, which I believe is unacceptable in 2009, and for the price bracket the Smyth aims for.

Neighbors gettin' it on woke me up, and it sounded like an earthquake (was a headboard).  Hallway walkers are heard as if you have no door.  Your bathroom fan cannot be turned off, so you'll be hearing the loud drone of it every moment you are in the room.

I stayed at the Thompson Lower East Side and it was much better than this.  Hallway noise was a bit better, and there were solid walls (concrete?) between the rooms.  Bathrooms were much nicer.

I don't know what to say about the Smyth, other than I fear its too late for this hotel to fix the noise problems caused by thin walls all around.

The room had a nice design (for typical small footprint of NYC hotel) and it had a sizeable veranda.  I would gladly trade that feature for concrete walls between rooms.

Put my Mom up here for the weekend because I'm a bad child & can't stand anyone staying in my shoebox.  Ended up spending the night myself & was really pleasantly surprised.  Got a great deal a few days in advance- weekend rates were about $80 cheaper than weeknight.

Was upgraded to a king room upon arrival & it was really decently sized.  Having seen many NY mini hotel rooms, this was palatial by comparison.  Reminds me of a lot of the other Thompson hotels.  There is definitely a focus on service & an attention to detail.

Unfortunately this is such a crap block on Chambers Street.  I tried to not let that impact the experience because location wise it is great & if you just turn a few corners, atmosphere becomes infinitely more pleasant.

Bed was super comfy, service was friendly, free cookies greeted us upon arrival, I got the Sunday Times for free, so all in all I was happy.  Thank you Smyth for lessening my Mom-induced-guilt.

Great location and a really cool hotel.   I chose the Smyth because its close to my office and has easy access to the Brooklyn Bridge for LGA.   I really liked the modern styling of the new rooms.  Staying here made me feel like I was living in a  TriBeCa condo for a few days.   Its a pretty quiet location for NY and the windows are well-insulated from street noise.

The bathroom walls are made entirely of frosted glass, so don't stay here with someone who you don't want to see in the shower!

The upper floors are condos and my guess is that this whole building was going to be residential at one time (its a few blocks from Ground Zero - another reason to support the local economy in TriBeCa.)

Note:  The street-cart just around the corner makes a great bagel/egg breakfast and has good coffee (all for under $3.)

Every hotel has problems, but how you handle them distinguishes the best from the average.

My sister is staying there while visiting NYC and we thought she had really scored with the $150/night rate and spacious room. Super close to 2,3 Chambers stop, cute little bar, friendly staff, and I specifically liked the room lamps.

Problem is the room has a door that allows it to adjoin to the neighboring room. For whatever reason, that door is paper thin. First night, we heard the neighboring guest gabbing quite loudly but no biggie. That and rando construction noises all this AM. Tonight, obscene noises of a "personal nature" for a pretty long time starting at 9:40!

My sis and I escaped to the hotel bar for a bit. Note to bar, rhubarb doesn't make for a great signature ingredient.

Back up to the room and the noisiness ensues. Theatrical stuff I tell you. I had theorized that there was some escort business going on, based on the nervous laughter followed by transactional statements I was hearing (remember, PAPER thin door, you can't escape the clarity of the conversation if you can call this conversation). By this time I am believing my wild theory.

Management tried to call the room. I actually don't know if that's the right approach. People are entitled to use their rooms the way they like although this was pretty ridiculously obnoxious; they should have offered to move/upgrade my sister. My nephew is 5 and hopefully did not understand the situation at hand. Eventually they found her a new room at our request, but a smaller one with just 1 King (from a larger one with two Queens).

Minus two stars for the poorly insulated door and for not expediting a solution that a) eliminated the issue and b) left the customer (my sister) happy. And boo on the rhubarb.

I got here and they'd put me in a smoking room, but I called down to the front desk and Edwin saved the day. Great service. I really had the impression he cared, which is different from the blank stares and fake smiles you get at most places. My current room is nice and big with great views of Broadway. I recommend staying here, just avoid the "smoking optional" second floor! (unless you smoke, in which case you have bigger problems than finding a nice hotel).

Spent two nights here with my wife last weekend in room 303. We were kindly upgraded to a suite as it was our 13th wedding anniversary. Rate was $245, but pretty affordable compared to most of the other Tablet Hotels where I usually stay in Manhattan. I've stayed at Thomposon properties before so came expecting good service, and was not disappointed.

Front desk staff was efficient, sharply dressed and great looking. Room is modern but comfortable. Everything you'd expect in a hotel at this level. Keihl's bath accessories were a nice touch. Linens were comfortable. Shower was excellent. Two flat screen TVs - better than my house!

Easy access to subway was also a plus. And we enjoyed wandering around Tribeca. A great part of town to stay in if you don't mind taking the train around. Taking a cab all the way uptown is a pain. Took us an hour and $20 to get to the Guggenheim, we should have ridden the sub for $4.50 and probably 20 minutes less time.

Our room did lack a view, which was kind of a drag, as it looks like there are lots of rooms facing the street. But it was quiet and I wasn't going to complain about a suite upgrade.

I also loved the charming concierge Ela, who worked hard to get us set up for dinner and nightlife plans. Points off however for recommending us to Shang at Thompson LES. I should have known that her opinion of the restaurant was clouded by the fact the hotels (and restaurant) shared a parent company. Shang was a huge disappointment in a city full of great dining options and was the only blemish on an otherwise excellent stay. That said Ela did make up for it by getting us into a nightclub with a tough door policy later that night, and redeemed herself the next day by suggesting a perfect pizza place for a late lunch in Tribeca.

My only other complaint was the $14 g&t from the hotel bar. I know I'm in Manhattan and I realize drinks are expensive here. I'd expect to pay $10-$12, but at this small boutique hotel (with an average lobby bar at best) that felt like a bit much.

Overall we loved Smyth and would recommend to everyone.

Our trips to New York lately have been double-duty work for my boyfriend and play for me, and we've stayed at a number of hotels around town before finding this one that suits us both. Understated on the outside, classy and luxurious on the inside. Great location, walkable to amazing restaurants and easy subway lines, and really a good value. We had a decent sized suite the last time, but it was unnecessarily big, honestly. The decor was really fun, bathroom was huge and awesome, the lounge and common areas were cool, the folks checking us in late at night were helpful and friendly. And the windows in the room opened!! Wah!!

Loved the location - in TriBeCa literally right above the Chambers St stop for the 1/9 subway
Loved the friendly first rate service. From the bellman to the front desk - the Smyth's staff is on point. And Sara, the manager, has a special place in our hearts.  She rescued the wife's coat from the lost & found after we'd left it behind and arranged its return. That's service.
Loved the vibe and the decor which were respectively low key and mellow and understated and stylish.
My only -altho significant complaint - I did not love the thin walls.  I especially did not love the thin walls that we shared with our neighbors in room 604 at 3am and 4am and 5 am:  a fumbling couple who talked and talked and could not ever quite locate the chemistry needed to stop talking all gdamn night and do the deed and go to sleep! But even here - the staff deserves kudos - they promptly moved us to another room with a terrace (room 814) - problem solved.

To be fair, the hotel interior is really nice, but I need to agree with a previous review - the construction was not done well so basically you can hear your neighbors far more than you might want to.

However, the service is disturbing. I'm not expecting the reception people to be too friendly in NYC, but I at least expect decent service in a 4-star hotel. First, their housekeeping person kept knocking on our door before 9AM - even though we didn't put out "do not disturb" sign, it's still a bit too early for a Sunday morning. Also, I accidentally left my dress in the hotel, and when I called the next day, the staff simply told me nothing was found. As I was so sure where it was, I asked her if she could double check with the housekeeper of our room, but she replied, "Our housekeepers log everything they find." I said, "Then do you mean someone took it away?" She said, "I cannot answer this question."

I did think of the chance of not getting my beloved dress back, but if I spent 300 bucks staying in a 4-star hotel, I would like to see the staff at least shows their effort to help, or they just assume their service stops the moment customers check out.

Nothing much to add to what has already been said.  I stayed at the Smyth last week for 3 nights and had a fabulous experience.  The rooms are very sleek and modern and yes, the walls are quite thin.  But what makes this hotel 4-star-worthy is the incredibly delightful staff.  So helpful.  So friendly.  So, 4 stars.

My husband and I got a room for the night for his birthday. We had an over night sitter and just needed a place to flop after a long day and dinner in the city. We were so pleased with our experience! The staff was so friendly and when we told them at check in our reason for staying, they upgraded us to a suite with a view!! The room was modern and clean and the bed was super comfy! We had a couple of drinks with the great bartender in the cute lounge on our way out and loved the little couches tucked away in private little nooks! Thanks guys, for a great stay. We've decided to try to do it monthly when the budget allows!
