The place is small, dirty and greasy, but the food is AMAZING. Phone your orders of baby backs in and pick them up. My favorite is to get a few orders of ribs, pull out the bones (super tender) and put the meat on bread with their spicy sauce and maybe some pickles (I'm a KC boy after all). I can eat a whole slab easy that way.
The chopped bakers are also awesome and much more affordable if you want something that's good but not so pricey.
Every barbeque staple was present and moderately tasty, especially the brisket. The sausage was a bit "Salt Lick"-ish, but was definately edible and pleasing. I just gotta say, growing up in the BBQ Capital of Texas has really set the bar high for me. The BBQ sauce was pretty lovely, silky, smooth and sweet. I will say this, the meat was good enough that it did not require sauce.
The staff were wonderful! Talkative. Answered all of my questions promptly. And made excellent suggestions regarding which plate to choose.
This place is amazing. I've tried many different bbq places and Smokey Mo's is by far the best. AMAZING breakfast tacos for breakfast, chopped beef sandwich by noon. Plus their sweet tea is to die for! The staff is very friendly and attentive.
As a lover of chopped beef sandwiches, I had to try this place because it's close to work. The chopped beef here is good. Not quite as tasty as Rudy's but still quite good. The sliced brisket is also nice and tender!
My favorite is the Chop Baker, which is a big baked potato, done up with all the fixins and a big scoop of chopped beef. Filling? Damn straight. Healthy? Probably not. I get mine without sour cream and skip dessert to feel better about myself.
Speaking of desserts, I got their peach cobbler once. Not good. It had some weird-tasting pudding substance between the crumbles on top and the peach filling below. No thanks.
The beef is worth a return visit though. Customer service is usually friendly and fast also. Good for lunch breaks.
Best BBQ in Cedar Park. The baby back ribs are amazing! Also love thier gigantic potatoes. Great service and reasonable prices.
This was the first BBQ joint I visited when I moved to the Austin area. I had noticed it several time on my way home to Lago V. Then I saw his commercials on TV and decided I'd try them.
When I arrived, I tried to maintain an open mind considering I'm can be a bit picky and over critical when it comes to good Que, especially spare ribs. The place is small and elongated. Customers are asked to line up, double back style to the right of the order counter toward the back. But this allows for adequate table seating toward the front. As I walked in, I scanned the plates on the tables to see what the offerings looked like. I do this in lots of places though.
On my first visit, I ordered a chopped beef sandwich, mainly because as I stood there at the counter, I had a clear view of food prep. The guy wielding the big knife, sure made that brisket look good as he chopped, chopped, chopped it into a fine mince. Reminded me of a BBQ sloppy-jo when i drenched it Mo's hot sauce, Very good.
On subsequent visits, I've tried the chicken, the brisket plate once and the ribs about 4 times. Here's the toss up.
4 Stars - Chopped Brisket Sandwich.
3 Stars - Chicken Plate - Was moist and tender but lacked smokey taste.
3 Stars - Brisket Plate - Not tender, just typical brisket.
3 Stars - Sides - Very disappointed in the "buttered potatoes", tasted more like boiled with little salt. Potato salad, cole slaw and pinto beans are okay, but this is their only location not offering okra. Boo! Y The corn on the cob is good.
3 Stars - Mo's Sauces - All tomato based, the sweet one is SWEET and the hot one is HOT. I think I detected liquid smoke being used thought, not good in the big scheme of things. A little deceptive.
1 Star - No beer
3 Stars - The bakers with chopped beef and the turkey looked good but never sampled them.
Now the ribs.
3 Stars for tenderness, but they are inconsistent. Like a box of chocolates. Sometimes FOTB delicious, sometime you have to chew on them.
2 Stars - Smokey Taste - I'm not convinced Mo really open pit, wood smokes them, a little more smokey taste would yield a better product.
2 Stars - Fat Content - They are fatty
4 Stars - Moistness - Never had any burned, dried out or charred ones.
2.75 Stars Average - pretty middle of the road in my BBQ travels.
Overview, it's strip mall BBQ. It will do as food bulk but doesn't satisfy my BBQ palate.
Good BBQ sauce, and service with a smile. Great Chopped Beef sandwich though, and their butter drenched potatoes.... ooooh I just gave myself goosebumps.
Yummy!
Great place to get take out.
It was on the road home, and I just wanted something to tide me over til I got home, so I pulled in for a sandwich to go.
The place is clean, smells good, has friendly people, but I ain't gonna stop again.
Prices were fair, but I just didn't care for the sandwich.
Best BBQ in the Cedar Park area. In fact, I make the drive from Lakeway there as often as I can now that we've moved - it's that good. Don't waste your time eating in the restaurant because the place doesn't offer much of an appetizing ambiance, but the food is great!
we just really like this place. it is not the biggest place and is kinda cramped but the food is very good. The brisket is always moist and smokey flavored. A real surprise was the chicken. It was very moist and again had a great smoked flavor. It is the best bbq in cedar park hands down !!
This family-run small barbecue chain knows how to smoke meat. The brisket and sausage are tender and flavorful, but I think that their crowning achievement is smoked turkey that surpasses Rudy's for flavor. They also have a very nice sauce, but I always get the spicy version. Their sides are also quite nice.
I have eaten Smokey Mo's in a catering scenario as well, where they served to 500+ people and the flavor and service were outstanding.
Of course, barbecue opinions vary widely, so you may not agree with mine, but I couldn't let a 2-star review sit here uncontested. I will continue to enjoy Mr. Melchor's wonderful barbecue.
