Wow! I can't believe I am the first person to review this place!
This has to be one of my favorite eateries in N. Georgia. Located under the Historic Smith House Inn and right off of the square, the family-style restaurant will bring you southern comfort foods a-plenty! Green beans, country ham, creamed corn, fried chicken, etc. You will think that you won't be able to get enough. But after your second plate, it will all catch up with you. The best part is getting to know everyone at your table as you pass the food around. And ain't nobody a stranger in good ole' Dahlonega.
Oh and check out the newly discovered mine shaft, which is displayed in an neat-o exhibit near the restaurant's entrance.
Clogged arteries come to mind when I think of this place. If down home country cooking is your thing, then you might want to take a drive to Dahlonega and check this place out. If not, I would suggest staying home.
Down home country cooking basically explains this place. They sit you at a big table with lots of other people and you get to eat all the fried chicken, creamed corn, and green beans you can think of!
I wouldn't go here again if someone paid me to. I've been trying to make healthier food choices, and this is definitely not the place to do that.
!963. Sophomore in high school. Rode with my best friend & his parents WAY up in the mountains to The Smith House for "dinner" one Saturday. Weighed 130 lbs at the time. Ran cross country, played tennis, tried out for B team football. Sat at the table in wide eyed amazement as platters of fried chicken, ham, pot roast, ham, veggies, cornbread and biscuits made rounds. Little pitchers with honey and sorghum on the table, with bowls of apple butter and lemon slices. Ate 10 pieces of chicken, 2 ham slices, three helpings of pot roast, mounds of mashed potatoes and creamed corn, wolfed down yams, green beans, blackeyed peas, cabbage, and fried okra. Have been back there at least once a year since. Yes, if you're a "healthy eater", by all means, stay away. Don't go to Mary Mac's, either. If you want to be presented with a vast variety of Southern dishes cooked reasonably well, you'll enjoy this. 2009: Senior citizen, weigh 224 lbs. Had gastric bypass surgery in 9/08, have lost 68 lbs since. Can only hold a very small amount of food. New paradigm is enjoy what I eat, even if it's one spoon of this, one fork of that, and leave the leftovers behind without worrying about it. I still enjoy Smith House because of the abundant memories this place and wellcooked Southern food evoke. I get to sit with a table full of strangers from all over the country, and enjoy their company and life stories over a good meal. That alone is worth an extra star!
